Eels move in ways that seem to ignore the rules most vertebrates live by. They swim with flowing body waves, they can scoot across wet ground, and they often keep going even when the spinal cord is cut. 



According to a new paper, two simple body signals, stretch and pressure, help explain how that is possible.



Those signals are not fancy. Stretch tells the body how much each segment bends, and pressure reports forces on the skin from water or from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-a-new-eel-species-with-fang-like-teeth/">objects</a>. 



When these signals are fed into the spinal circuits that set a basic rhythm for movement, the eel’s whole body keeps time without micromanagement from the brain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secrets-of-eel-movement">Secrets of eel movement</h2>



Kotaro Yasui is an assistant professor at Tohoku University’s Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Science (<a href="https://www.fris.tohoku.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FRIS</a>) and lead author of the study



“Our findings will help design highly adaptive robots capable of navigating complex and unpredictable environments,” noted Professor Yasui.



Most vertebrates walk or swim thanks to networks in the spinal cord called central pattern generator <a href="https://openbooks.lib.msu.edu/introneuroscience1/chapter/central-pattern-generators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">circuits</a>. 



These circuits can produce rhythmic muscle commands on their own, then shape that rhythm using feedback from the body. That is why the same overall plan can show up in animals as different as fish, salamanders, and mice.



Eels add a twist by leaning hard on two kinds of sensory input. Proprioception is internal sensing of stretch that tells a segment where it is in the cycle. Exteroception is sensing from outside the body, including water pressure on the sides of the fish or contact with a surface. 



Stretch sensitive neurons like the classic lamprey edge cells have long shown how such bending <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-2025-our-power-our-planet/">signals</a> can tune the spinal rhythm.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flexible-robot-mimics-eel-movement">Flexible robot mimics eel movement </h2>



Yasui’s team built a mathematical model in which each body segment has a small local oscillator that produces a timing signal. They wired in two feedback loops, one for stretch and one for pressure, so the oscillators would be tugged into step by what the body feels.



The researchers tested the controller in two settings. First, they used computer simulations that generated body movements and force patterns. Then, they tried it on a physical eel-like robot made of flexible segments and equipped with skin-level sensors.



The same controller worked in both settings, and it produced stable swimming quickly, without central commands to lock the segments together.



The stretch loop had a special job. It sped up the time it took for a smooth traveling wave to appear from random starting positions. It also helped the body hold a strong stride once the pattern settled, even though that gain could cost a little <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-2025-what-were-really-fighting-for/">energy</a> because the joints work harder during sharper turns.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spinal-rhythm-and-sensory-feedback">Spinal rhythm and sensory feedback</h2>



The team asked a simple question. If the controller swims well, can it also crawl on land when the ground is dotted with obstacles? They ran the robot through a peg field where pushing and bracing matter more than glide.



Stretch feedback made the difference. With stretch only, the robot found traction on the pegs and made steady headway. 



Pressure alone did not help in that setting, which fits earlier <a href="https://jan.ucc.nau.edu/acg/publications/Pace_%26_Gibb_2011.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> showing that elongated fishes such as ropefish change their kinematics across water and land in specific ways, with long, slow, high amplitude body waves on land.



The results suggest continuity rather than a clean break between swimming and crawling in these fishes. 



The same spinal rhythm and sensory feedback can drive both swimming and crawling, as long as the environment provides the right reaction forces. The fish doesn’t need a separate land-based neural controller to move



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-spinal-injuries-teach-us">What spinal injuries teach us</h2>



The most striking tests involved spinal cord transection. The group measured swimming in live American eels before and after a complete cut around the middle of the body, then matched those tests with simulation and robot runs using the same controller.&nbsp;



The movement behind the injury kept a similar frequency and phase as the movement in front of it, which echoes decades old <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11744256/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> that eels can recover coordinated swimming after transection as regrowth advances.



In the model, that coordination did not need signals from the brain. It emerged when the local oscillators had some built-in tendency to tick on their own, and when stretch and pressure loops were strong enough. 



The body above the cut tugged the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-secretly-reshape-landscapes-in-powerful-ways/">body</a> below the cut into the same rhythm through passive motion and local sensing.



That simple recipe explains why eels can move immediately after injury while many amphibians and mammals cannot. If the posterior spinal cord cannot oscillate on its own, or if the feedback pathways are too weak, the two halves fall out of step and the body stalls.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eel-movement-robots-and-evolution">Eel movement, robots, and evolution</h2>



Robots that move without legs need to live with uncertainty. Water currents change, floors are cluttered, and obstacles shift. Prior <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/scirobotics.abf6354" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> has shown that proprioceptive feedback can entrain undulatory robots into reliable patterns despite turbulence and noise.



This study adds pressure sensing on the skin to that recipe and shows how a simple stretch rule helps robots use clutter for propulsion. That means eel-like machines could search pipes, navigate earthquake rubble, or inspect tanks without complex top down control.



There is also a story about evolution here. If a swimming controller can produce useful crawling when the environment offers something to push against, early vertebrates may have needed adjustments more than a full rewrite to move onto land. Flexible circuits and strong local feedback could have carried a lot of that load.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



Biologists can now test specific predictions in the lab. For example, they can look for descending stretch pathways that echo the model’s anterior to posterior copy rule, and they can probe how pressure sensors along the skin tune rhythm in moving fish.



Engineers can search for energy savings by blending stretch rules that boost stride with rules that prevent excessive bending. They can also explore how to route around damaged links in a robot by letting neighboring segments pull each other back into rhythm.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2422248122" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

Spinal secrets: What eels reveal about the origins of movement

Scientists are working to gain a better understanding of the genetic makeup of wolves that are isolated on Isle Royale, which is one of the most remote national parks in the United States located in Lake Superior. 

Researchers led by <a href="https://www.mtu.edu/">Michigan Technological University</a> studied the genes of one particular pair of wolves and discovered they were father and daughter, yet shared the same mother. According to the experts, this type of close inbreeding causes abnormalities that likely contributed to the crash of the Isle Royale wolf population over the last decade. 

In the absence of wolves, the moose population has become detrimental to many other species by wiping out much of the island's vegetation. To address the issue, the National Park Service has been restocking wolves on the island. Last fall and winter, 13 new wolves were introduced from the mainland.

The researchers are describing how homozygosity, or the possession of two identical strains of the same gene, could have caused the inbreeding depression among the Isle Royale wolves. When a gene is homozygous, uncommon traits that are usually recessive often become dominant. In this case, inbreeding led to deleterious recessive mutations causing spinal deformities and other health problems.

"This new study, including whole-genome analysis of wolves from Isle Royale, directly links specific candidate genes with spinal abnormalities, which became more prevalent as decades progressed and inbreeding became more severe," explained study co-author and research scientist Rolf Peterson.

The wolves on Isle Royale may be an extreme example, but an understanding of population genetics is needed to inform future conservation efforts elsewhere. The genetic makeup of the wolves can be used to investigate how their reintroduction affects the overall population. The research will also help conservationists meet the increasing challenges of fragmented habitats and genetic pools around the world.

The study will be published next week in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Isle Royale wolves illustrate the harmful effects of inbreeding

Crowdsourcing has become an incredibly popular tool. Books, movies, medical procedures have all been paid for by people donating small amounts online combined into a ‘crowd’ of people donating a large amount. It isn’t just direct monetary donations either, as data is harvested by millions of people worldwide to benefit businesses and political campaigns. Increasingly, little bits of money, data or time from large groups of people are being funneled through the internet to create real world results. This is now true even in conservation biology. 

<a href="https://www.zooniverse.org">Zooniverse</a> is a research platform that utilizes volunteers on the internet to collect data for scientific projects. The types of projects vary and are created by a number of different researchers. For instance, <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/sandiegozooglobal/wildwatch-burrowing-owl/about/research">Wildwatch Burrowing Owl</a> asks on its homepage, ‘Will you help us save burrowing owls?’ The question refers to the iconic burrowing owl that takes over <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prairie-dogs-true-underdog/">prairie dog</a> and other burrowing mammal dens as its home, an increasingly rare icon of the western deserts and prairie. It’s estimated that there are only 10,000 breeding pairs of the special owl left, according to <a href="https://defenders.org/burrowing-owl/basic-facts">Defenders of Wildlife</a>. 

Western burrowing owls (Athene cunciularia hypugaea) in California are especially in decline. To stop this decline, <a href="https://www.sandiegozooglobal.org/">San Diego Zoo Global</a> has set up artificial dens for the owls as well as reintroduction of ground squirrels. The ground squirrels dig their own burrows that are eventually taken over by burrowing owls.

The burrowing owl project has motion cameras set up at the borrows to monitor who is coming and going from the burrows. Cameras like these collect hundreds if not thousands of photos in a short amount of time. Many photos from cameras like these inevitably aren’t even of the animals being studied, and sometimes a camera takes a shot of another animal, a person or even grass moving in the wind. Because of the amount of photos to sort through, the platform on Zooniverse allows untrained volunteers working at home on their computer to donate whatever time they’d like to sorting through the owl photos. The goal is to note how many owls are in each photo, allowing researchers to sort through the data faster than if they did the work themselves. 

Other projects on zooniverse include similar projects with large mammals in <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/pangorilla/wild-gabon">Gabon</a>, Africa, <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/penguintom79/penguin-watch/about/research">penguins</a> in Antarctica and even <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/lawildlife/wildlife-of-los-angeles/about/research">urban wildlife</a> in Los Angeles. The penguin project once was even gave away a free trip to Antarctica to a lucky volunteer. Some of these projects like Wildwatch Burrowing Owl are directly related to conservation, others less so, but they all potentially contribute data that can be used by wildlife managers. Zooniverse isn’t the only way you can contribute to science or conservation from home, though.

Of course if you have specific skill sets, you can be more valuable to organizations or causes as a volunteer, and this is as true with volunteering time online as it is volunteering in person. If you have knowledge of law, computer programming or writing skills for example, you may be able to contribute real assistance to non-profits without ever leaving home. 

Like Zooniverse, <a href="https://taprootfoundation.org/nonprofits/?utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=">Taproot Foundation</a> is an online platform allowing non-profit organizations to seek volunteers. Unlike Zooniverse, most of these organizations are seeking one or two skilled volunteers to help on a limited time project. The focus is also much broader than Zooniverse and virtually any sort of non-profit can be involved in Taproot. You can do work such as consulting, writing, web design or even phone work for a non-profit from home.

Because of the nature of the volunteer positions listed on Taproot, projects you can become involved with are always changing. A nice feature is that you can sign up for an account with Taproot, listing your skills and interests and when a project that seems like a good match comes up, you get emailed a link to see if you’re interested. Of course, if you’re interested in a serious internship in conservation to build your skills or want to be involved in a long term project, most of these shorter projects might be less satisfying. 

Occasionally, online jobs in wildlife biology or conservation come along that actually pay. For example, <a href="https://wfscjobs.tamu.edu/jobs/acoustic-recording-bird-song-identifier-various-locations/">some academic institutions</a> seek out a person with exceptional birding skills to identify birds by the sound of their calls from home for a short contract period. Others may be lucky enough to find longer term employment in the same vein. There are also plenty of nature and science publications that might take you on as a writer or intern if you have writing abilities and a story to tell. Other online volunteer positions are to help people access natural history interpretive material.

The <a href="https://www.amnh.org/">American Museum of Natural History</a> is taking on volunteers for <a href="https://projectdescribe.amnh.org/#/">Project Describe</a>. The project involves describing items in the museum’s collection of images on their website so that these images are more accessible to those with disabilities. The Smithsonian Institute also takes <a href="https://transcription.si.edu">online volunteers</a> for many of its museums. The work for the Smithsonian involves transcribing photos of labels in an attempt to make more material available online. For those interested in biodiversity, volunteer positions are available in entomology, invertebrate zoology, botany at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (which includes a famous research station in Panama). 

Projects that still need assistance can be found in the <a href="https://transcription.si.edu/browse?filter=collection%3A2&amp;sort=">Biodiverse Planet</a> category. Helping museum work may or may not contribute directly to the environment, but it least is helping to educate the public about the environments we live in and the wildlife we share them with. 

In the end, volunteering online can help you learn a bit about animals or science and help organization or researchers out, but it can also feel a bit isolating. For some experiences, there’s no substitute for getting outside into the actual environment and interacting with it. After all, there is no wildlife living online, there are no outdoor places in your computer. Often there is no mystery or surprise in sorting through images or labels on a home computer. Much like reading a book, volunteering online can be a part of learning about the world... but it shouldn’t be the only part.

Conservation projects you can participate in from home

Wolf-dog <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extinct-red-wolf-dna-texas/">hybrids</a> have become so numerous in Europe that there are now concerns that the hybrid animals could drive wolf populations to extinction. 

In a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, researchers from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a> warn that wolf-dog “swarms” are overtaking purebred wolves. 

Both wolves and dogs are members of the genus Canis which means that the two species can interbreed and produce offspring. 

Habitat loss due to urban expansion and other human activities are making wolf and free-roaming dog encounters more frequent. 

More than 40 scientists with a range of backgrounds and expertise weighed in on the issue, and although the majority consensus is that hybridization is a problem, no one can agree on a solution. 

“We need to address this issue before wolf-dog hybrids backcross with wolves to the extent that wolf populations will be lost to hybrid swarms, and the conservation of wild populations will become unfeasible,” said Valerio Donfrancesco, the lead author of the study. “In this paper, we argue that scientific agreement is crucial to encourage decision-makers to act, and to raise awareness about this conservation issue in society at large.

For the study, scientists were given the opportunity to share their views on the issue anonymously. 

It was agreed that free-roaming dogs are a big part of the problem and that wolf-dog hybrids should be kept away from wolf populations. 

However, when it came to suggestions for how to prevent wolf-dog hybrid encounters, the results were mixed. Some scientists supported the idea of keeping hybrids and dogs captive, or sterilizing free-roaming dogs to prevent reproduction, while others even recommended killing hybrids. 

The lack of research dedicated to wolf-dog hybrids further emphasizes the complex issue, but this should not dissuade action, the study authors say. 

“We hope that by highlighting areas of disagreement and why they occur, we will be able to build a more unified scientific opinion, and aid an effective management of this urgent issue,” said Dr. Nibedita Mukherjee, a co-author of the study.

Wolf-dog hybrids threaten wolf populations in Europe

Wolf-dog hybrids have become so numerous in Europe that there...

When a fight occurs between two <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/competing-mate-sperm-quality/">competing animals</a>, the loser of the battle often avoids violent altercations for some time. This is called the “loser effect,” and a new study shows that fighting ability does not affect how soon an animal returns to fight off others. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, <a href="http://www.okayama-u.ac.jp/index_e.html">Okayama University</a> and <a href="https://www.tmu.ac.jp/english/index.html">Tokyo Metropolitan University</a> studied and selectively bred captive beetles to understand how the loser effect evolves in a species. 

The findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. 

Broad-horned beetles fight over females, and once a beetle lost a battle, most would not start another fight for about four days. 

However, after selectively breeding the beetles to lose the “loser effect,” the beetles started fights sooner even though their fighting ability had stayed the same. 

In other words, the loser effect is not determined by fighting ability, and the two evolve independently. 

“By selecting males who experienced the loser effect for the shortest time, we were able to breed beetles willing to fight again sooner,” said David Hosken, a member of the research team. “It is fascinating that these males were no better at fighting. In other words, there is a complete disconnect between actual fighting ability and the duration of the loser effect.”

For the study, the researchers paired males together to see how they interacted for an hour. A winner was determined if the beetle had pushed or chased away his opponent. 

Next, the researchers took the beetles that were less impacted by the loser effect, and after ten generations, loser beetles returned to fight other males after three days rather than four despite having the same fighting abilities. 

The study shows that past experiences and losses determine future decisions for some species rather than actual fighting ability. 

“It makes sense for animals to use past experience to decide whether to engage in a behaviour,” said Kensuke Okada, an associate professor at Okayama University. “Losing a fight is a useful clue of the likely benefits of further fighting for a particular individual. Some species also show a ‘winner effect’ - being more willing to fight after a victory - but that is not the case among broad-horned flour beetles.”

Fighting ability does not impact how soon a beetle gets back in the ring

Most people are well aware of the impressively long distances covered by some butterflies. Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) migrate up 2,500 miles each year between cold and warm habitats. How the migration started is hard to know but it gives obvious benefits to the butterfly and allows wonderful spectacles for humans to enjoy. 

According to the <a href="https://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/Monarch_Butterfly/migration/index.shtml">United States Department of Agriculture</a> (USDA), eastern populations of monarch butterflies overwinter in oyamel forests in the eastern Sierra Madre range of Mexico. Mainly these butterflies are known for their wintering grounds in the <a href="https://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/Monarch_Butterfly/conservation/index.shtml#monarca">Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve</a>, founded in 1986 in the Mexican state of Michoacan. The western population of monarch butterflies overwinters in California. As we’ve reported, there has been some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/monarch-butterflies-winter-locations/">recent evidence</a> that monarch butterflies have been finding other places to overwinter as well. What is surprising is how far afield monarch butterflies have made it. 

Monarch butterflies were potentially caught in a storm and blown far out to sea where the tired and battered insects found a small island to make home. No one knows for sure if this is how it happened. It’s possible that a person carried a monarch knowingly or on accident with them to a Pacific island. What is known is that at some point in the not too distant past, monarch butterflies colonized islands in the Pacific Ocean. 

From the islands in the Pacific, it was less of a jump to colonize other parts of the world. According to <a href="http://cookislands.bishopmuseum.org/showarticle.asp?id=21">Cook Island Biodiversity &amp; Natural Heritage</a>, the monarch butterfly is the largest of the native species of butterfly in the Cook Islands. Despite its recent arrival, the monarch is called native in this context because it probably arrived under its own power. 

Animals, plants and other organisms have always moved from one place to another, colonizing or invading new lands, depending on perspective. Interestingly though, the monarch butterfly migration isn’t so simple. For the butterflies to move, so did their host plants, the milkweeds. Milkweed plants are full of toxic alkaloid compounds that mother monarch butterflies taste the plants for before depositing eggs on a host. 

The monarch caterpillars ingest the alkaloid compounds when feeding on the plant for a very important purpose. Birds often eat butterflies. A brightly colored butterfly such as a monarch, slowly flapping through a sunlit meadow seems like an easy target for a hungry robin or blue jay. However, the bright colors of the monarch wings are a warning that they’re not too tasty. In fact, the monarchs secrete the alkaloids they ingest into their skin, making them bitter and poisonous. The poison is a potent protection for monarchs. 

Birds were fed monarch butterflies in a <a href="http://images.peabody.yale.edu/lepsoc/jls/1960s/1964/1964-18(3)165-Petetersen.pdf">famous experiment</a> carried out by researchers at <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/">UC Boulder</a>. The birds vomited violently after eating them and refused to try the butterfly again. Even butterflies that look similar to monarchs but don’t dine on toxic plants are avoided by hungry birds. Without the presence of the milkweed, it’s unlikely that birds in new places would ever learn the meaning of the monarch’s bright wings, making them an easy meal. So before monarchs could spread to Pacific islands, milkweed had to spread. This is why the first record for monarch butterflies in Hawaii is in 1840 or Tonga in 1863. Slowly, the monarch butterfly colonized much of the Pacific following in the wake of transplanted milkweed.

Eventually, monarchs arrived on the largest landmass in the South Pacific – Australia. The first record of monarch sightings in Australia come from the summer of 1870-71, according to <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/offtrack/flying-weeds:-how-the-monarch-butterfly-colonised-australia/6768228">ABC</a>, when several sightings were recorded. 

The fact that there were several sightings all at once indicates that the butterfly was probably already established in Australia. It’s impossible to know when the first monarch actually alighted on the Australian continent but it’s possible that the butterfly blew in from New Caledonia, where today monarchs still live with two other butterfly species in the same genus. Interestingly, monarch butterflies in their expanded range have shown themselves to be quite adaptable. In Australia, the species is rightly called the ‘<a href="https://australianmuseum.net.au/learn/animals/insects/wanderer-butterfly/">wanderer butterfly</a>’ due to the roaming nature that allows it to migrate such long distances and that originally brought it to Australia in the first place.

In the more northern parts of eastern Australia where monarchs live, they migrate to the warmer coastal areas during the winter and move more inland during the summer, according to <a href="https://australianmuseum.net.au/learn/animals/insects/wanderer-butterfly/">Australian Museum</a>. In warmer areas of Australia, the monarchs breed nearly continuously throughout the year, with a large overlap between generations occurring which is unusual in North America. In the southern part of Australia where temperatures are cooler, monarchs don’t mate immediately when they mature in the fall. Instead southern Australia monarch butterflies overwinter, sometimes in large groups as in North America and mate in the warmer months. 

After mating the monarchs fly northward, and after several generations arrive in the northern part of their range, a similar life history to the butterflies in North America. Interestingly in Australia, there appear to be a few birds immune to the monarch butterfly poisons Pied Currawongs (Strepera graculina) and Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes (Coracina novaehollandiae) have been seen eating monarchs without apparent illness. Monarchs even on occasion have been found wandering in Tasmania, although they’re a rare visitor. Monarchs in other parts of their new homes also migrate.

In New Zealand, large groups of monarch butterflies overwinter. Enough butterflies have been overwintering in large groups at Tauranga Bay that the <a href="https://www.monarch.org.nz">New Zealand Monarch Butterfly Trust</a> was originally formed to protect the site. Like in parts of Australia, New Zealand monarch butterflies generally overwinter in coastal areas where temperatures are mild and move inland to mate and lay eggs in the summer. Unfortunately, troubles have followed the wandering butterfly.

Pesticides, deforestation, pesticide use and disappearance of milkweed have lowered the monarch butterfly populations in North America. Unfortunately, the same things as well as climate change and perhaps an occasional random storm have hurt the monarch populations in Australia, according to <a href="https://theconversation.com/iconic-monarch-butterflies-under-threat-from-rising-herbicide-use-27596">The Conversation</a>. Humans are partially responsible for the global success of monarch butterflies, but tragically we may be the ones to put an abrupt end to it as well.

How monarch butterflies gradually spread vast distances across the globe

Most people are well aware of the impressively long distances...

Gray whales have been <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/whales-washed-ashore-san-francisco/">turning up dead</a> in alarming numbers along the western coast of the United States from California up to Washington. Scientists believe they are starving to death as they make their annual journey from Mexico to Alaska, but the conditions driving the lack of food remain unknown.

So far this season, 61 dead gray whales have washed up along the shoreline. According to the experts, most of the animals showed signs of malnutrition, and autopsies revealed that some had starved to death. 

"Clearly something is going on with the forage, as these animals’ tanks of gas are either empty or very low," said Justin Viezbicke of the <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/">National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration</a> (NOAA).

This is not the first time that there was an unusual number of gray whales found stranded on the west coast. In 1999 and 2000, the bodies of more than 600 whales were recovered. Experts at NOAA considered many possible causes including starvation, chemical contaminants, biotoxins, infectious diseases, parasites, fisheries interactions, and ship strikes.

"While the emaciated condition of many of the stranded whales supports the idea that starvation could be a significant contributing factor in these mortalities, the underlying cause of starvation during this event is unknown," <a href="https://www.afsc.noaa.gov/techmemos/nmfs-afsc-150.htm">stated</a> NOAA.

This year, the actual number of whales affected is likely much higher than what is realized because only about 10 percent of the bodies make it to the shore.

The gray whales are in the middle of their migratory season, during which they travel thousands of miles to the nutrient-rich waters of the North Pacific and the Arctic where they feed in the summer months. 

Scientists are investigating whether there is simply not enough food available for the whales and if this mortality event may be tied to climate change. The Arctic is extremely susceptible to climate change, and the changing conditions may be impacting the food chain. 

"Climbing temperatures have begun melting ice that used to be impassable," states the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. "In the Arctic, this increases competition for food as more fish migrate through areas where gray whales historically feed upon crustaceans, plankton, and mollusks that they dredge from the ocean floor."

Gray whales may be starving to death during their annual migration

Gray whales have been turning up dead in alarming numbers...

An international team of scientists has determined that the rate of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/ivory-poaching-elephants-tusks/">elephant poaching</a> in Africa is now declining after reaching its peak in 2011. The researchers said that the world's elephants will remain threatened, however, until more action is taken to address poverty and corruption and there is a drop in the demand for ivory. 

"We need to reduce demand in Asia and improve the livelihoods of people who are living with elephants in Africa; these are the two biggest targets to ensure the long-term survival of elephants," said Dr. Beale. "While we can't forget about anti-poaching and law enforcement, improving this alone will not solve the poaching problem."

The study, which was led by the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/">University of York</a>, has revealed that the annual mortality rate from poaching dropped from 10 percent in 2011 to four percent in 2017. There are an estimated 350,000 elephants left in Africa, but as many as 15,000 are killed by poachers every year. At the current rate of poaching, elephants could almost completely vanish, with the few survivors living in small, protected populations. 

"We are seeing a downturn in poaching, which is obviously positive news, but it is still above what we think is sustainable so the elephant populations are declining," said study co-author Dr. Colin Beale. "The poaching rates seem to respond primarily to ivory prices in Southeast Asia and we can't hope to succeed without tackling demand in that region."

According to the study authors, it is impossible to know the impact of the ivory trade ban that China introduced in 2017. They pointed out that ivory prices started to fall before the ban and may reflect a broader downward trend in the Chinese economy.

"Ensuring a future with wild elephants, and myriad other species, will require stronger laws and enforcement efforts and genuine community engagement; however, as long as demand exists supply will find a way to quench it," explained study co-author Lisa Rolls Hagelberg. "Only about 6% of the current funding going towards tackling illegal trade in wildlife is directed to communication."

"For long-term success, governments need to prioritize comprehensive social and behavioural change interventions to both prevent and reduce demand. We have the know how, now we need to invest to truly influence environmental consciousness."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

The last male Sumatran rhino in Malaysia has died of liver and kidney damage, the <a href="http://www.borneorhinoalliance.org/">Borneo Rhino Alliance</a> (BORA) confirmed. The rhino’s name was Tam and he was believed to have been in his 30s.

Sumatran Rhinos were declared extinct in the wild in 2015 in Malaysia, with only three small populations remaining in Indonesia. The small rhinos population has declined by 70% in the last twenty years. 

Tam was captured in a palm oil plantation at approximately 20 years old in 2008 and relocated to Tabin Nature Reserve where he has lived since, according to <a href="http://www.heraldmalaysia.com/news/malaysia-holds-vigil-the-last-male-sumatra-rhino-is-dying/48003/5">Herald Malaysia</a>. Tam was part of an unrealized breeding program plan in Malaysia. There is only one other Sumatran Rhino in Malaysia, a female, Iman who was captured for captive breeding in 2014 but is now past her reproductive prime, and she has never successfully bred in captivity. 

Iman showed signs of a ruptured tumor in her uterus in 2017. Another female rhino in Malaysia was euthanized in 2011 after suffering from skin cancer. These illnesses seem to be the result of poor genetics from a dwindling population of animals, the death throes of if not a species, a population. The decline of the Sumatran Rhino in Malaysia has been exasperated by neglect from conservationists in Indonesia. 

In modern times, where data is collected on wild animals and they are often kept in cages, it’s much easier to notice the passing of a species. Sometimes it comes down to the death of one, iconic individual animal. Martha was the name of the last known passenger pigeon, who was kept in the Cincinnati Zoo until she <a href="https://abcbirds.org/martha-the-last-of-her-kind/">died in 1914</a>. In <a href="https://www.historychannel.com.au/this-day-in-history/the-last-tasmanian-tiger-dies/">1936</a>, a Tasmanian Tiger or thylacine died in the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania. A mechanism designed to allow the animal inside to stay warm failed and apparently the Tasmanian Tiger died from the cold.

Sometimes extinctions like these haunt us. Whether real or not, several sightings have been reported of thylacines after the animal was officially written off as extinct. The more common pigeons easily bring to mind what must have been awe inspiring flocks of passenger pigeons moving like clouds across the sun for entire days. Museums hold the remains of these dead species. Preserved in life-like poses, they become relict for the faithful, but I wonder if these extinctions mean more to us than when a hunter went out and simply no longer found a certain prey. 

Despite the lingering ghosts of the human slaughtered dead, species continue to die. Individuals pass away in undignified cages, prisoners of the same that killed their kin or alone under the sky of their eerily quieted homes. With individuals, so go species. With blood on our hands, we swear to learn from our mistakes and yet, on it goes. The <a href="https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/biodiversity/elements_of_biodiversity/extinction_crisis/">Center for Biological Diversity</a> reports that the rate of extinction is 1,000 times greater than a natural background of extinction. 99% of endangered species are threatened by human activities. The rhinoceroses of Malaysia are no different. 

In 2018, the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/northern-white-rhino-died/">last male northern white rhino</a> died, signaling the end of a subspecies. The last of his kind, the northern white rhino was named Sudan, he died at the age of 45 in captivity in Kenya, according to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-43468066">BBC</a>. The <a href="https://rhinos.org/2018-state-of-the-rhino/">International Rhino Foundation</a> reported that as a species, white rhinos are doing better than many others, with an estimated population of approximately 20,000 animals. Greater One-Horned Rhino populations are on the rise as well, with more than 3,500 animals. Unfortunately, Black rhino populations have dropped drastically but with about 5,000 individuals, there’s still a lot of hope.

Poaching is a huge factor in the decline of rhinoceroses, whose horns are valuable on the black market for traditional Chinese medicine. Despite this, the rhinos in Africa have in some cases grown in population, proof of some successful conservation measures. 

Rhinoceros species in Asia haven’t fared nearly as well as these in Africa. There are perhaps only 67 Javan Rhinos left alive in the world, found only in Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia, where they are fiercely protected. Unfortunately, the park is near an active volcano, an eruption could quickly push the Javan Rhino into extinction. The last Javan rhino known to live in Vietnam was found dead with its horn hacked off.  

In 2012, the Indonesian government and several conservation organizations signed an agreement committing themselves to a program of collaboration with Malaysian groups on the conservation of the Sumatran Rhino. Despite efforts on the part of Malaysia, the agreement apparently came to nothing. Now, it seems that the last of Malaysia’s rhinoceroses will soon be gone. 

The <a href="http://www.heraldmalaysia.com/news/malaysia-holds-vigil-the-last-male-sumatra-rhino-is-dying/48003/5">Herald Malaysia</a> reported that Tam stopped eating in April. The passing of Tam represents the end of a slender hope to successfully breed rhinos in Malaysia and save a population there. 

In Indonesia, conservation efforts are still under way. <a href="https://news.mongabay.com/2019/04/to-rescue-sumatran-rhinos-indonesia-starts-by-counting-them-first/">Mongabay</a> reported in February that the Indonesian government aims to officially tally the rhino population within three years, which currently stands at estimates of 30-100 wild animals with several in captivity. The <a href="https://rhinos.org/where-we-work/sumatran-rhino-conservation-program/">International Rhino Foundation</a> reports that it has been involved in creating a Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary as well as sponsoring rhino protection units. The result of the efforts is the prevention of poaching in areas where these units operate for nine years. Along with captive breeding programs in Indonesia as well as collaboration with organizations in the US, there is some hope.

A recent study led by the <a href="https://www.utas.edu.au/">University of Tasmania</a> has revealed that the global fishing fleet grew from 1.7 million vessels in 1950 to 3.7 million in 2015. However, the total catch dropped by more than 80 percent in the same time frame.

According to study lead author Yannick Rousseau, the findings reflect growing pressure on marine resources and a fall in the abundance of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/tiny-fish-coral-reefs-thrive/">fish</a>.

"What we have seen over the last 65 years is more and more fishing vessels chasing fewer fish," said Rousseau. "Since 1950, a dramatic increase in the size of the fishing fleet in Asia has more than offset small declines in North America and Western Europe."

"Most of the increase in vessel numbers has been in motorized fishing boats, a change from the unpowered 'artisanal' fishing vessels that once characterized Asian and African fishing fleets. But, despite its advanced technology and increased numbers, the modern motorized fleet is having to work much harder to catch fewer fish."

Rousseau explained that scientists use a measure of catch per unit of effort (CPUE) to evaluate fisheries management and the well-being of fish stocks.

"CPUE reflects how many fish are caught for the amount of effort expended, such as during a day's fishing, and this measure paints a dark picture of the state of the ocean's resources," said Rousseau.

"In recent years, a sharp drop in CPUE in Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Southern Mediterranean indicates their fisheries expanded at a much faster rate than fish stocks could support."

In developed countries such as Australia, the researchers found that CPUE has recently stabilized due to more effective fisheries management and a sharp fall in the size of the fishing fleet over the last decade.

"However, on current worldwide trends we can expect to see a further one-million vessels on the water by mid-century and the average engine power of the global fleet continues to increase," said Rousseau. "These changes will further challenge the sustainable use of fisheries resources in coming years."

"This is a particular concern for populations in regions such as Southeast Asia, where a high proportion of people rely on fish for sustenance. Our findings suggest that additional management measures are urgently warranted to ensure the future sustainability of global marine resources."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

Investigation reveals new clues to the evolution of language and communication. In an effort to better understand how <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/brain-storage-learn-language/">human language</a> and communication developed, a team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de/en/institutes-museums/einrichtungen/dpz/">Leibniz Institute for Primate Research</a> has analyzed the vocalizations of vervet monkeys. It is known that East African vervets have specific alarm calls to warn for a leopard, eagle, or a snake, and the researchers wanted to investigate the call system used by the closely-related <a href="http://www.earth.com/image/the-gambia-river-in-west-africa/">West African</a> vervets.

To examine how the West African vervets would react to unknown sounds, the researchers flew a drone over a group of monkeys and later played them a sound recording of the drone noise. The reactions of the monkeys indicated that they learned very quickly what the sound of the drone meant. 

However, instead of creating a new vocalization, the animals used the alarm call that East African vervets use to warn of eagles or other aerial predators. According to the study authors, this suggests that the call structure was determined long ago in the course of evolution and has been conserved.

Leopards, eagles, and snakes are the three main predators faced by East African vervet monkeys, and the animals use alarm calls that are followed by a specific strategy. When they hear the call for leopard, for example, they climb a tree. The call for eagle means to search the sky and hide, while the call for snake means to freeze like a statue on two legs.

The West African green monkeys were found to use alarm calls for leopards and snakes, but had not developed a call for aerial predators. When the research team carried out the drone experiment, the animals reacted to the drone sound with alarm calls, searched the sky, and hid. 

"The animals quickly learned what the previously unknown sounds mean and remembered this information," said study lead author Julia Fischer. "This shows their ability for auditory learning."

The calls used by West African vervets closely resembled those used by East African vervets as an eagle approaches. "The structure of the alarm calls seems to be deeply rooted in the evolution of vervet monkeys," explained Fischer. Investigation reveals new clues to the evolution of language and communication

One of the best ways to live with wildlife is to leave as much of the natural habitat around your home as undisturbed as possible. Unfortunately for many of us, we live in an already very disturbed environment with little of the complex ecological interactions found in undisturbed areas left intact. Because of this, it often falls on people to restore or reconstruct what they can of a habitat if they want to have the pleasure of wildlife encounters or simply wish to help non-humans. 

Water is often an incredibly important resource for animals. Living in the desert as I do, it’s easy to see birds bathing in any small puddle of water. I recently watched a hummingbird cleaning herself and splashing in a thin stream of water coming from the top of a small fountain in my neighborhood. It’s also important to realize that using large amounts of water for pools, artificial streams, or fountains can also fly in the face of common sense water conservation methods. 

One option is to collect rainwater, using some of it in pools for wildlife and perhaps even watering a garden, trees or other plants with it. Of course, water collection can go too far. Theoretically someone with hundreds of acres could create a massive personal reservoir that would in turn disrupt the local ecology. Because of this, there are some states with restrictions on how you can collect rainwater. In other areas, the government gives subsidies, encouraging the harvest of precious rainwater. <a href="https://www.newsdeeply.com/water/community/2018/01/09/in-tucson-subsidies-for-rainwater-harvesting-produce-big-payoff">NewsDeeply</a> reported that the city of Tucson, Arizona had given out more than $2 million in rebates to those collecting rain water.

Of course, water isn’t the only resource useful for wildlife or the only factor that creates a habitat. Plants are also very important to most animals. Flowers attract pollinators from bees and butterflies to hummingbirds and even bats. Plants with fruits or tasty leaves also attract a new suite of animals that want to munch in your yard. If you’re not willing to share plants or their fruit with animals, it’s important to protect them in a way that doesn’t hurt wildlife. 

Nets over fruit trees or fences around gardens can often accomplish the task. If you’re ok with rabbits, birds, deer or other wildlife eating plants in your garden, it’s helpful to plant native plants that will attract native wildlife. In a <a href="https://zachofjungle.com/2019/05/11/plant-rescue/">recent interview</a>, Denise Gehring of Wild Ones, a non-profit that promotes natural gardening, highlighted the importance of native plants. Native trees support native insects, which in turn can support native birds and other wildlife. This is why it’s also important to not use pesticides in areas you want to attractive wildlife to – it’s not just about birds and larger animals but also about the insects they eat. Besides eating and drinking, animals also find shelter in their natural habitats. 

Leaving some sticks fallen from trees and rocks in an area is a start, which provide habitat for invertebrates and other small animals like lizards and snakes. Depending on where you live and your attitude, snakes may be a bigger problem than the benefit of providing habitat to other animals. Small amounts of grass, sticks and other debris may also be used by nesting birds besides being used as habitat in situ. According to <a href="https://extension.psu.edu/wildlife-habitat-relationships">Penn State Extension</a>, live trees such as pines provide nesting sites in summer as well as thermal cover in winter. 

It’s also possible to directly build homes for many animals. Nest boxes and bird houses are probably the most obvious examples of building homes for animals and that’s a good start. <a href="https://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/downloads/w66343824">Oregon State University</a> offers instructions on how to do so. It’s surprising how many other animals are willing to live near humans, bats sometimes live in caves but certain species or populations prefer other habitats in which to roost. You can even provide bat houses in your yard, and <a href="https://www.nwf.org/Garden-for-Wildlife/Cover/Build-a-Bat-House">The National Wildlife Federation</a> has detailed instructions on how to build them. 

If you’re concerned about native pollinators such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/save-native-bees/">bees</a>, you can also provide space for them to live. Many native bees are not colonial in the same way that honey bees are, so instead living alone in small holes, they sometimes live in holes inside of human structures. Because of this, you can provide places for mainly harmless native bees to live without attracting something that will swarm and harm humans. Attracting native pollinators has the added benefit of helping plants in your garden and perhaps providing more food for birds or other animals. <a href="https://modernfarmer.com/2017/02/build-native-bee-hotel/">Modern Farmer</a> has instructions for building a native ‘bee hotel’. Besides the needs for shelter, food and water, <a href="https://extension.psu.edu/wildlife-habitat-relationships">Penn State Extension</a> points out that wildlife needs one more thing to thrive – space.

It would be very easy to fill a yard with a clutter of bird houses and man-made ponds surrounded by dense thickets of trees. In the wild though, different animals require different landscapes and the same animal may rely on more than one environment for different things. A forest landscape isn’t simply a collection of old trees and shrubs or bushes that live beneath them combined with animals. Instead, a forest is a patchwork of old trees, barren areas that may have recently been burned turning slowly into meadows. Fallen trees rot and the sunny areas they leave open are filled in with an eruption of different plant life. Newer patches of forest are full of dense clumps of young trees, while older patches are more widely spaced. 

The conversion of one eco type to another and another until reaching a mature forest is called ecological succession. Instead of everything in a large forest reaching the mature stage, everything is constantly changing. It is the patchwork of different forest types that provides for an abundance of biodiversity in a healthy forest. Because of this, it’s important to space things out a bit, leave open space and see what happens to It, what grows in the bare patch of dirt will probably be better than anything you could plant. Remember, you’re trying to leave space for other things to come close, the rest is up to the animals themselves.

How to turn your backyard into a healthy habitat for animals

Anyone interested in creepy, crawly creatures may have already known that mites and ticks are both arthropods – an incredibly diverse grouping that also includes spiders, scorpions, bees, locusts, crabs, cockroaches and mosquitoes, among others. New genetic data, though, points to a closer relationship.

A genetic study of 10 species of mites and 11 species of ticks found that they’re much more closely related than anyone expected. 

Mites and ticks are both, along with spiders and scorpions, members of the group Chelicerata under the larger arthropod umbrella. The new research, however, shows that they are not two separate groups of species, but rather a single evolutionary lineage.

The discovery could change how scientists think of the chelicerates.

"Spiders, with more than 48,000 described species, have long been considered the most biodiverse chelicerate lineage, but 42,000 mite and 12,000 tick species have been described. So, if mites and ticks are a single evolutionary entity rather than two distantly related ones, they are more diverse than the spiders,” co-author Dr. Davide Pisani of the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> said in a press release.

Arthropods make up about a million of the estimated 9 million animal species on Earth. Not only that, but fossils show that they have been around for about 500 million years. Scientists are still trying to work out how all of the species relate to one another.

"Because of their anatomical similarities it has long been suspected that mites and ticks form a natural evolutionary group, which has been named Acari,” Dr. Greg Edgecombe of the <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/">Natural History Museum London</a> said. “However, not all anatomists agreed, and genomic data never found any support for this idea before."

Because of the roles that many arthropods play in the food chain – from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-bees-crops-humans/">bees that pollinate crops</a> to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-virus-dangerous-mite/">mites that endanger them</a>, from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tick-mosquito-borne-disease-spreading/">ticks and mosquitoes carrying disease</a> to <a href="https://www.earth.com/animals/edible-crab-cancer-pagurus/">crabs beloved by foodies</a> – determining how they are all related is a chore. Figuring it out, however, could lead to advances in agriculture or against diseases like malaria and Lyme disease. 

The discovery that mites and ticks are close cousins can help researchers piece together other relationships between chelicerates.

"Regardless of the methods we used, our results converge on the same answer – mites and ticks really do form a natural group. Evolutionary trees like the one we've reconstructed provide us with the background information we need to interpret processes of genomic change,”  lead author Dr. Jesus Lozano Fernandez of the University of Bristol said. "Our genealogical tree can now be used as the foundation for studies using comparative genomics to address problems of potential biomedical and agricultural relevance, like the identification of the genomic changes that underpinned the evolution of blood-feeding parasitic ticks from ancestors that weren't blood-feeders."

The study has been published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-10244-7">Nature Communications</a>.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles.

Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.



The full study was published in the <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
