More than half a billion years ago, a tiny ancestor of today’s arthropods scuttled along the floor of a shallow sea in what’s now Yunnan, China. It had large grasping arms, stalked eyes, and a surprisingly modern-looking brain tucked into a head barely wider than the tip of a pencil.



Now, a new look at this ancient fossil - Jianfengia multisegmentalis - is reshaping what scientists thought they knew about how these animals first branched into two major evolutionary paths.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arthropods-rule-the-world">Arthropods rule the world</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-think-insects-will-become-a-sustainable-food-source/">Insects</a>, spiders, crabs, centipedes - all of them are arthropods. This massive group includes more than a million known species. 



Arthropods live everywhere: in the ocean, on land, in the air, and even inside of other animals. Their tough exoskeletons, segmented bodies, and jointed legs have helped them survive and thrive for over 500 million years.



But one big puzzle has remained: where exactly did the two main branches of arthropods come from?



On one side, you have mandibulates - creatures like insects, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-invasive-crustacean-species-discovered-in-the-mediterranean/">crustaceans</a>, and millipedes, which have antennae and use jaws (or mandibles) to eat. On the other hand, chelicerates - spiders, scorpions, and horseshoe crabs - have fangs or pincers instead of jaws.



Until now, scientists weren’t sure when or how these two groups split. That’s where Jianfengia comes in.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-fossil-that-tells-a-different-story">A fossil that tells a different story</h2>



At first, Jianfengia was thought to belong to a group called megacheirans, meaning “large hands” in Greek. 



These extinct animals had long, claw-like limbs sticking out from their heads - similar to the claws of modern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/horseshoe-crabs-view-the-world-through-compound-eyes/">horseshoe crabs</a>. Because of that, scientists had placed them in the chelicerate group.



But when researchers took a closer look at the fossilized brain of Jianfengia, they noticed something didn’t add up.



The research team, led by the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a>, reconstructed the nervous system from four well-preserved specimens. 



What they found was unexpected: a brain that looked a lot like that of a modern shrimp or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bright-coloration-in-crayfish-does-not-serve-an-evolutionary-purpose/">crayfish</a>. It even had features seen in simple freshwater crustaceans, like brine shrimp - the kind sold as “sea monkeys.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ancestors-of-antennae">The ancestors of antennae </h2>



“These megacheirans didn't have antennules, which are antenna-like appendages that are common to crustaceans, insects and centipedes,” said lead researcher Nicholas Strausfeld, a professor in the U of A Department of Neuroscience. 



“Instead we see these strange, quite sturdy head appendages that were specialized for reaching and clasping things.”



Turns out, those big “claws” weren’t early versions of spider fangs after all. Instead, they were likely the ancestors of antennae - the kind found in today’s insects and crustaceans.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seeing-with-ancient-eyes">Seeing with ancient eyes</h2>



Jianfengia’s head was only about 0.08 inches wide, but it packed in a lot of sensory power. It had stalked compound eyes, like those of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/do-crabs-and-lobsters-have-emotions-and-feelings/">crabs</a>, plus at least three single-lens eyes - the simple kind also seen in many modern arthropods.



In one fossil, the researchers even looked inside the compound eyes and saw fossilized cone cells that once supported light-sensitive parts of the eye. 



“What we saw was unexpected: the brain looks really modern, comparable to that of a living crustacean,” Strausfeld said.



This level of detail is almost never seen in fossils this old. Soft tissues like brains usually break down long before they can fossilize. But thanks to the fine-grained rock and lucky conditions in this ancient seabed, a few rare specimens kept their delicate neural features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-cousins-go-separate-ways">Ancient cousins go separate ways</h2>



Another fossil - Alalcomenaeus - also belonged to the megacheiran group and had similar body parts. However, it turned out to be quite different on the inside. Its brain looked more like that of Limulus, the horseshoe crab, which is a chelicerate.



So even though these two creatures looked similar on the outside, their brains revealed that they were actually early members of different arthropod groups. One led to modern crustaceans and insects. The other led to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-species-joro-spiders-has-invaded-the-united-states-heres-what-to-look-for/">spiders</a> and scorpions.



“Many repeats of these comparisons revealed that in the arthropod tree of life, Jianfengia sat at or near the root of all mandibulates, whereas its putative cousin, Alalcomenaeus, has the same status, but within the chelicerate branch of the tree of life,” said co-author David Andrew of Lycoming College.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-same-tools-different-outcomes">Same tools, different outcomes</h2>



The key body part in all of this are the large claws sticking out of the head. Over hundreds of millions of years, evolution shaped them into very different things.



“In chelicerates, these ‘great appendages’ shrunk, so they eventually became the spider fangs,” said Strausfeld. “In mandibulates, evolution modified them into segmented antennules.”



Some tiny marine crustaceans alive today - called ostracods - still have antennules tipped with claspers, offering living proof of this evolutionary transition.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arthropods-from-the-inside-out">Arthropods from the inside out</h2>



Looking at a creature’s shell or limbs can tell scientists part of the story. But to really understand where an animal fits in the family tree, the brain may offer better clues.



“Our results demonstrate that close examination of fossilized neural remains can provide powerful data indicating evolutionary relationships impossible to obtain just from features of the exoskeleton,” Strausfeld said. 



“One needs to know what to look for in the fossil brain because it tells us a lot about a fossil’s identity.”



Frank Hirth, a co-author from King’s College London, noted that the organization of their fossilized brains perfectly aligns with that of living arthropods, suggesting that their ancient constituents are extraordinarily robust, yet diverse.



This may explain why arthropods are the most successful inhabitants of this planet, said Hirth.



Ultimately, the tiny brain of a long-dead sea creature has helped scientists solve one of the oldest mysteries in animal evolution - where the arthropod family tree began to branch.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-62849-w">Nature Communications</a>.

570 million years ago, at the beginning of the Cambrian period, life on Earth began rapidly diversifying and changing. 

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-diversify-earth/">Cambrian Explosion</a> is often used to describe the rapid burst of biodiversity that occurred during the Cambrian Period, and it’s the first time that many major animal groups pop up in the fossil record. 

Very little is understood about how so many new species evolved when for millions of years prior during the Ediacaran Period, life on Earth consisted of single-celled and later complex organisms that only lived deep below the ocean's surface. 

During the Ediacaran, there was less oxygen in the atmosphere which would have resulted in less oxygen and food in the deep ocean where biodiversity got its start. 

Now, researchers from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> may have uncovered an important piece of the Ediacaran-Cambrian puzzle which could help piece together the missing links of the evolution of all life on Earth. 

The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and the researchers say that even though oxygen, light, and food were scarce in the deep ocean, it was a much more stable environment compared to water at the surface. The stable temperatures provided the right conditions for life to evolve. 

The researchers used what they knew of sea life and water temperatures today to help explain how life evolved in the harsh, cold, environment of the deep ocean millions of years ago. 

“Bringing in this data from physiology, treating the organisms as living, breathing things and trying to explain how they can make it through a day or a reproductive cycle is not a way that most paleontologists and geochemists have generally approached these questions,” said Erik Sperling, the senior author of the study. 

First, the researchers used sea anemones to test if there was an optimal temperature for animals to survive with low levels of oxygen similar to oxygen levels in the ocean during the Ediacaran Period. 

The researchers were looking for a “Goldilocks temperature” that would still support life even if oxygen levels were low. 

The reason the researchers choose sea anemones was that their biology closely resembles that of fossils dating back to the Ediacaran oceans.

“We assumed that their ability to tolerate low oxygen would get worse as the temperatures increased,” said Tom Boag, lead author on the paper. “That had been observed in more complex animals like fish and lobsters and crabs.” 

The anemones needed more oxygen the lower the temperature of the water which indicated to the researchers that sea life during Ediacaran would have needed a stable environment with constant temperatures. 

The researchers say stability is the answer as there would be major changes in temperature and oxygen levels at shallower depths. 

Although the Ediacaran oceans had less oxygen and any animals that inhabited the deep ocean would have had to expend more energy to breathe, if temperatures were constant, it would have put less strain on the animals. 

“The only place where temperatures were consistent was in the deep ocean,” said Sperling. “That's why animals appeared there.”

<a href="https://swara.co.ke/mountain-gorillas-reclassified-from-critically-endangered-to-endangered/">Swara</a>, an East African conservation news site, reported from Nairobi Kenya last month that mountain gorillas have passed a small but important benchmark.  The iconic great ape is no longer considered critically endangered, its status being reclassified as merely endangered. 

This small step is due partially to intense conservation efforts, field conservation staff for the mountain gorilla number more than 20 times the global average of staff per kilometer.  <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/african-mountain-gorillas-friendships/">Mountain gorillas</a> are the only great apes with a growing population. Despite the improvement for mountain gorillas, all other gorilla populations remain critically endangered. The decline of all eastern gorilla populations (including lowland gorillas) is at 5% per year, according to <a href="https://www.awf.org/wildlife-conservation/mountain-gorilla">African Wildlife Foundation</a>.

Mountain gorillas inhabit the volcanic ranges in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).  The gorillas are found at high elevations of 2,500 to 4,000 meters above sea level in montane and bamboo forests.  

<a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/m/mountain-gorilla/">National Geographic</a> reports that the mountain gorilla has longer hair and shorter arms than lowland gorillas.  Despite the raw power embodied by gorillas, they’re all relatively gentle animals, subsisting on a mostly vegetarian diet, supplemented sometimes with insects.  According to <a href="https://www.awf.org/wildlife-conservation/mountain-gorilla">African Wildlife Foundation</a>, the exact numbers aren’t certain but mountain gorillas have a lifespan of about 40 to 50 years.  <a href="http://wwf.panda.org/knowledge_hub/endangered_species/great_apes/gorillas/mountain_gorilla/">WWF</a> reports that mountain gorillas were only first ‘discovered’ by science in 1902.

In the little over 100 years that mountain gorillas have been widely known of outside Africa, their population has suffered.  <a href="https://news.mongabay.com/2018/11/mountain-gorillas-recovery-prompts-downlisting-to-endangered-status/">Mongabay</a> reports that there are now an estimated 1,000 individual mountain gorillas, up from a low point of a few hundred animals in the 1980’s.  Civil unrest and violence contributed to the decline of mountain gorillas as well as direct poaching. Gorilla hands were even sold as souvenir ashtrays.  Mountain gorillas were sold illegally as pets. Encroachment on gorilla habitat by farmland played a role. Diseases can be spread from human to gorillas as more and more people fill the area around the animal’s habitat.  

The plight of few wild animals captured the public’s attention like that of mountain gorillas.  Dian Fossey, the famous researcher heroically worked for the protection of mountain gorillas and promoted their popularity.  The 1988 movie <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095243/">Gorillas in the Mist</a> where she was portrayed by Sigourney Weaver was nominated for 5 Oscars.  It may also help mountain gorillas that they’re so human-like; it’s not hard to see a relative looking at a gorilla.  Still, despite hard work and the undeniable charisma of the mountain gorilla, much needs to be done. 

If mountain gorillas are going to continue on their recovery, conservation must continue without letting up.  A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25859046">paper</a> published in Science in April, 2015 drives the point home; mountain gorillas after declining to such small numbers are inbred.  Inbreeding in gorillas leaves the animals especially prone to disease and vulnerable. The original genetic diversity of mountain gorillas can’t be rebuilt on normal time tables, there just aren’t enough individuals left and so the situation remains perilous.  Gorillas also reproduce slowly compared to many animals, producing only one infant after nine months of gestation, like humans. Two wild mountain gorilla populations currently exist in the whole world.

The Virunga population in Virunga National Park DRC and Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda has 604 individuals, according to <a href="http://wwf.panda.org/knowledge_hub/endangered_species/great_apes/gorillas/mountain_gorilla/">WWF</a>.  In the DRC, war and instability has cost more than four million people their lives over the last 14 years.  Violence like this not only puts gorilla conservation on the back burner, it endangers them directly as well.  Desperate people sometimes turn to poaching as a way to simply survive. Currently the gorillas in DRC live in rebel occupied land, making conservation work there especially dangerous.  

Another threat to the gorillas in Virunga is partly what makes it a good home for them to begin with: the fertility of the soil.  The good agricultural soil of Virunga has made it one of the more densely populated areas of Africa. Another population in Uganda, the Bwindi population has a recorded census of 400 individuals in 2011.  Four orphaned gorillas also live in a sanctuary in Uganda. 

Much of what the future holds for mountain gorillas and their lowland relatives will depend on continued conservation efforts.  Another huge factor for wildlife in the area is political instability and the spread of human disease. Some places, like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, try to balance the dangers of tourism to gorillas with financial gains for locals and conservation efforts.

<a href="https://www.gorilla-tracking-uganda.com/advantages-of-gorilla-tourism-bwindi.html">Uganda Travel News</a> reports that mountain gorillas in Bwindi have been tracked by tourists since 1993.  The main advantage to the park and conservation efforts comes in the form of money. Currently the tourism fee in Bwindi to see gorillas is at US $600 per person, with over 100 permits available per day.  This type of money shows significant potential to benefit communities of the area. 

Park staff, porters, even businesses like restaurants and of course guides taking tourists to see gorillas all benefit.  Clearly tourism depends on some level of political stability and a minimum of violence in an area. The <a href="https://gorillafund.org/mountain-gorilla-tourism-costs-and-benefits/">Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International</a> says that in Rwanda, gorillas made tourism the third highest foreign currency earner after coffee and tea at almost a million per year in the 1980’s.  In Rwanda the fee for viewing gorillas is only $250, still high but it’s argued that the high cost minimizes the impact on gorillas by limiting the number of visitors.  The fees also benefit local people and incentivize gorilla protection. 

Of course, there are risks from tourism to the gorillas.  Tourists could transmit disease to the great apes, even killing them with a common bacteria or virus they have no immunity for.  Important gorilla behaviors might also be changed by tourism and tourism visits increase stress on the animals. The greatest benefits perhaps is that gorilla tourism can in the best case scenarios empower local people to provide for themselves while also encouraging protection of the environment.  Political instability, violence, poaching and heavy handed foreign involvement undermine these benefits. 

If Africans in the area can find a way to build a stable future for themselves without taking too much from the gorillas, both could prosper together.  For now, there’s a small hope for the future of mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorillas are no longer ‘critically’ endangered

Can you imagine a movement faster than the blink of an eye or the snap of your finger? Now imagine you’re the unlucky prey on the receiving end of a bite so powerful and fast that it’s now considered the fastest animal movement on record. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://illinois.edu/">University of Illinois</a> discovered that the Dracula ant, Mystrium camillae, has the fastest bite on record and can snap its mandibles at speeds up to 200 miles per hour. 

“These ants are fascinating as their mandibles are very unusual,” said Andrew Suarez, a leader of the research. “Even among ants that power-amplify their jaws, the Dracula ants are unique: Instead of using three different parts for the spring, latch and lever arm, all three are combined in the mandible.”

The goal of the study, published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, was to examine the snap jaw movements and jaw shape of the Dracula ant, which is native to Australia and the Southeast Asian Tropics. 


Previously, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/florida-skull-collecting-ants/">trap-jaw ants</a> were considered to possess some of the fastest moving mandibles in the ant kingdom. 

Trap-jaw ants are known for snapping their jaws closed from an open position, but Dracula ants use spring-loaded, sliding movements to achieve their powerful snap. 

The researchers filmed the ants while they snapped their mandibles at 480,00 frames per second which allowed the researchers to analyze the movements. 

“Scientists have described many different spring-loading mechanisms in ants, but no one knew the relative speed of each of these mechanisms,” said Fredrick J. Larabee, who also helped lead the study. “We had to use incredibly fast cameras to see the whole movement. We also used X-ray imaging technology to be able to see their anatomy in three dimensions, to better understand how the movement works.”

The researchers noticed that the Dracula ants “power up” their mandibles as they press the tips together. The snap occurs when one mandible slides across the other as it’s released.  

“The ants use this motion to smack other arthropods, likely stunning them, smashing them against a tunnel wall or pushing them away,” said Suarez. “The prey is then transported back to the nest, where it is fed to the ants' larvae.” 

The researchers used computer simulations of the Dracula ant’s jaw snaps to see if different roles or castes in the nest impacts jaw strength or snap abilities. 

“Our main findings are that snap-jaws are the fastest of the spring-loaded ant mouthparts, and the fastest currently known animal movement,” said Larabee. “By comparing the jaw shape of snapping ants with biting ants, we also learned that it only took small changes in shape for the jaws to evolve a new function: acting as a spring.”

Dracula ant’s snapping jaw movement is the fastest on record

New research published in the journal <a href="https://tsaco.bmj.com/">Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open</a> finds that U.S. healthcare costs for animal-related injuries exceed $1 billion every year, and that number is expected to rise due to <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-sharks-swim/">climate change</a> and development pressure put on animal habitats.

Researchers looked to death certification data, short-term hospital studies, and data submitted to the National Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) outlining outcomes of patients who were treated for animal-related injuries in U.S. emergency care departments between 2010 and 2014.

During that five-year period, 6,457,534 people, averagely aged 31, visited the emergency room for animal-related injury treatment. About half of these injuries were caused by non-venomous insect or spider bites. A fourth of patients were treated for dog bites. And one in eight were treated for bee, wasp, or hornet stings. Luckily, only .02% of patients admitted for an animal-caused injury died from their infliction. 

The total five-year healthcare cost for animal-related injuries was a whopping $5.96 billion, which rounds out to about $1.2 billion each year. However, neither of these figures include doctor’s fees, outpatient clinic charges, cost of rehabilitation, or lost productivity, which means this estimation is far less than the actual cost.

"Animal-related injuries are an underappreciated and increasing burden to the US healthcare system," the researchers stated. “As available habitat for these animals increasingly overlaps with human development and recreational activities, it is expected encounters with these animals may increase and could result in increased animal-related injuries.”

Healthcare for animal-related injuries costs over $1 billion annually

The results of a new study suggest that birds first evolved iridescent feathers around 150 million years ago after they began using trees as a way to keep safe from predators. The researchers believe that this refuge provided the birds with an opportunity to focus on mating, and the shiny feathers attracted the mates.

Some of the most striking displays in the animal kingdom can be attributed to iridescence, which allows an animal or an object to appear differently from various angles. To investigate how iridescence may have emerged in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/birds-sense-smell/">birds</a>, experts from the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> examined the feathers from 97 modern bird species. 

The team used scanning electron microscopy to quantify melanosome extracts from the bird feathers. Melanosomes are animal cell structures that are responsible for color, protection from sunlight, and for storing and moving the light-absorbing pigment melanin.

The analysis revealed that dinosaurs began growing shiny feathers around 150 million years ago. According to the researchers, this research may be used to determine what the feathers of avian ancestors would have looked like.

Study co-author Dr. Jakob Vinther is a leading researcher in the field of Paleo Colour at Bristol's School of Biological Sciences. “Many birds have iridescence - such as the hummingbird or magpie - and we have been studying how iridescence is created,” Dr. Vinther told <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">MailOnline</a>.


“There is a massive expansion of melanosome shapes that make all these remarkable colours. I think it probably evolved because dinosaurs started to go up into the trees, which made them more safe from predators.”


Dr. Vinther explained that the birds on the ground would have had typical brown feathers. 

“The more exposed you are the more vulnerable you are. The first dinosaurs couldn't fly so they would have had a bad chance of survival if their feathers were iridescent,” said Dr. Vinther.

“There has been an expansion to become more colourful up until today. Perhaps 100,000 years or one million years from now birds will have even more beautiful feathers.”

The<a href="https://www.iucn.org/"> International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)</a> recently updated its <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/">Red List of Threatened Species</a> to include two critically endangered and one endangered subspecies of giraffe. 

In 2016, the giraffe was listed as vulnerable and it was reported that the giraffes were undergoing a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38240760">silent extinction</a>.

The 2018 update includes a comprehensive assessment of seven of the nine IUCN recognized giraffe species, five of which had never been assessed before according to the <a href="https://giraffeconservation.org/2018/11/14/giraffe-subspecies-update/">Giraffe Conservation Foundation</a>. 

The Kordofan giraffe and the Nubian giraffe are now listed as critically endangered, while the 
Reticulated giraffe is listed as endangered. 

The assessment was carried out by researchers from the IUCN Species Survival Commission, and the newly assigned status highlights the threats that many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giraffe-parts-sold-legally/">giraffes are facing</a>. 

“While giraffe populations in southern Africa are doing just fine, the world’s tallest animal is under severe pressure in some of its core ranges across East, Central and West Africa,” Julian Fennessy, the Director of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, said in a <a href="https://giraffeconservation.org/2018/11/14/giraffe-subspecies-update/">statement</a>. “It may come as a shock that three of the currently recognized nine subspecies are now considered ‘Critically Endangered’ or ‘Endangered,’ but we have been sounding the alarm for a few years now.”

Being listed as critically endangered means there is a high risk of extinction in the wild. Alongside these declines in some giraffe subspecies, the new assessment also changed the status of two giraffe subspecies from endangered down to vulnerable. 

“This is a conservation success story and highlights the value of making proactive giraffe conservation and management efforts in critical populations across the continent,” said Arthur Muneza, the East-Africa Coordinator of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. “Working collaboratively with governments and other partners, we feel that our proactive measures are saving giraffe in some areas before it is too late.”

A new study has revealed how increases in ocean temperatures are changing the way that sharks swim.

Biologists from <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au/">Macquarie University</a> in Sydney incubated Port Jackson shark eggs in different water temperatures to see how projected changes in ocean temperature due to climate change might impact sharks. 

The researchers found that sharks incubated in warmer temperatures had a lower survival rate and were “right-handed,” meaning the sharks tended to swim to the right. 

Obviously, sharks don’t have hands, but the researchers are using a common term associated with lateralization to help describe the changes in shark swimming patterns if climate change continues unchecked. 

<a href="http://www.indiana.edu/~primate/brain.html">Lateralization</a> describes the sides of the brain that are more in control of specific tasks over others. 

In fish, lateralization helps determine which direction to swim and since climate change is projected to increase ocean temperatures, it will be important to gauge how these changes will impact <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-detrimental-to-sharks-hunting-abilities/">shark behavior</a> and lateralization. 

“Lateralization may enable sharks to process information more efficiently, even if their brains are smaller or less well-developed,” says Catarina Vila Pouca, the lead author of the study told <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/warming-waters-could-make-sharks-right-handed-and-deadlier/">Scientific American.

For this study, which was published in the journal <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2073-8994/10/6/184/htm">Symmetry</a>, the researchers snorkeled for Port Jackson shark eggs off the coast of Eastern Australia. 

The researchers then incubated 12 eggs in a tank with temperatures comparable to the ocean waters where the eggs had been found.

Another 12 eggs were incubated in a tank meant to simulate ocean warming by the end of the century with temperatures gradually raised to 74.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Within a month of hatching, five of the sharks that had been incubated in the warmer tank died. 

To test how the water temperatures affected lateralization, the researchers placed a shark in a long tank with a y-shaped partition at the end. 

On the other side of the partition was a reward and all the shark had to do was go right or left. The sharks from the warmer tank were more inclined to veer right compared to the sharks incubated in ambient water temperatures. 

The research indicates that warmer temperatures force sharks to be smarter about energy conservation and allocation as climate change is projected to put a strain on development and metabolism for many creatures. 

“Elevated temperature significantly increased developmental rates and metabolism, with associated costs in terms of energy allocation to growth and physiological processes,” the researchers wrote in their study. “Therefore, stronger lateralization may arise as an energy-saving mechanism.”

Climate change is altering the way that sharks swim

A new study has revealed how increases in ocean temperatures...

Biofuels are often proposed as a solution to help reduce fossil fuel emissions and combat climate change. But while renewable energy is important for future climate change mitigation, a new study shows that expanding the production of crops like oil palm and corn could have drastic consequences on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-key-measure-success/">biodiversity</a>. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.dur.ac.uk/">Durham University</a>, the <a href="http://www.bik-f.de/root/index.php?page_id=57">Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre</a> and the <a href="https://www.tum.de/en/">Technical University of Munich</a> found that setting aside large amounts of land for bioenergy crops could be just as harmful to vertebrate biodiversity as climate change. 

The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Climate change, habitat degradation, and human activities have already caused sharp declines in biodiversity and studies have shown that we are in the midst of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warning-imminent-mass-extinction/">sixth mass extinction</a>. 

If bioenergy crops pose a threat to global biodiversity, then it’s crucial for researchers and policymakers to consider these risks before investing in biofuel production.

“We found that the combination of climate change and large-scale expansion of bioenergy crops would together threaten about 36% of the habitats of all global vertebrate species, including many that are already the subject of significant conservation work,” said Stephen Willis, an author of the study. “While bioenergy is clearly an important tool for climate change mitigation, the potential impacts on biodiversity must not be ignored.”

For the study, the researchers compared to two climate scenarios. One scenario projected warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2100 with biofuels being used to their fullest extent, and the second scenario had warming of three degrees by 2100 but very little biofuel use. 

While the first scenario had less warming, the researchers discovered that even expanding bioenergy crop production would not be enough to compensate for the losses in biodiversity. 

The researchers found that expanded bioenergy crop production under the first scenario would result in significant species declines.

For example, the hedgehog could undergo 44 percent population loss, the red squirrel would experience 46 percent population loss, and the common starling would suffer 15 percent population loss.

Bioenergy crop production is already impacting biodiversity across the world with oil palm plantations damaging local ecosystems in tropical regions, and expanding corn production in temperate regions leading to habitat declines for birds and other farmland mammals. 

The study shows that biodiversity needs to be considered in the bioenergy discussion and other alternatives for reducing emissions must be found. 

“A strong reliance on bioenergy to combat climate change could result in outcomes for biodiversity that are little better than would occur if we didn't implement bioenergy strategies, despite the consequent climate change implications,” said Willis. “Instead, we should be thinking about how to swiftly and significantly reduce energy consumption if biodiversity is to be protected.”

Biodiversity could suffer if bioenergy crop production grows

According to the United Nations, nearly 70 percent of the global population will live in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-thrive-living-cities/">cities</a> by 2050. As urban regions expand, wild animals will have to adapt. 

A new study by experts at the <a href="https://www.si.edu/ResearchCenters">Smithsonian Technical Research Institute</a> (STRI) has revealed one such adaptation strategy used by male tungara frogs in Panama City, who try to appear to be sexier and more enticing than other frogs in nearby forests. 

Study co-author Wouter Halfwerk is an assistant professor at Vrije University in Amsterdam and a visiting scientist at STRI. 

“Tungara frogs sound a bit like pinball machines,’ said Professor Halfwerk. “To their simple tun sound, they can add extra elements like the sound, gara, to make complex calls: tun gara gara - hence their name."

“Some people call tiny tungara frogs the acoustic equivalents of peacocks. They are nothing to look at, but just like male peacocks have fancy tails to attract females, tungara frogs add extra sounds to their calls to lure females in.”

In order to avoid predators such as bats and parasitic flies, however, the frogs have to be careful about when they perform their love songs.

The researchers set out to investigate how city frogs compare with forest frogs when they call to attract females. In their first experiment, Professor Halfwerk's team played recordings of male tungara frog calls in 22 urban and forest locations. Using infrared-sensitive cameras, they monitored the number of approaching females, predators, and parasites.

In the city, the recorded calls did not attract as many females, who may have been simply less available. In addition, the mating calls only attracted a few flies and no bats, which indicates that predators are less of a threat in the city.

When they took frogs from the forest to the city and vice versa, the team discovered that urban males in the forest immediately changed to simpler calls. Forest males in the city, however, did not immediately make the switch to more complex calls. This transition appeared to be driven by more competition for females and fewer predators and parasites in the city.

Study co-author Rachel Page explained,  “Just as we change our social relationships in cities, animals are changing their relationships and their behavior in the radically altered biological communities we are creating across the globe.”

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/natecolevol">Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution</a>.

Frogs turn up the charm when they live in the city

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.jic.ac.uk/">John Innes Centre</a> are providing new insight into how catnip produces the substance known as nepetalactone that sends <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/cats-ineffective-rat-numbers/">cats</a> into a state of ecstasy. The research could ultimately give experts easier and faster access to cancer fighting medications.

According to the research team, understanding the series of events that leads to the production of nepetalactone could be particularly useful in helping to identify how plants synthesise other chemicals like vinblastine, which is used for chemotherapy.


Nepetalactone belongs to a class of organic compounds known as terpenes, which are typically formed by a single enzyme in plants. The researchers have discovered that terpenes are produced in catnip through a two-step system. In this process, an enzyme activates a precursor compound which is then obtained by a second enzyme to produce the terpenes.

This is the first time that this two-step process has ever been observed, and the scientists believe that a similar process is responsible for the synthesis of the anti-cancer drugs vincristine and vinblastine.

Dr. Benjamin Lichman, who conducted the work while he was a postdoctoral researcher at John Innes Centre, is now a lecturer at the University of York.

“We have made significant progress in understanding how catnip makes nepetalactone, the chemicals that sends cats crazy,” said Dr. Lichman. “Catnip is performing unusual and unique chemical processes, and we plan to use these to help us create useful compounds that can be used in treatment of diseases such as cancer.” 

“We are also working to understand the evolution of catnip to understand how it came to produce the cat-active chemicals."

Study co-author Professor Sarah O'Connor added, “Nepetalactones have potential use in agriculture as they participate in certain plant-insect interactions. In future work we will explore the roles that these compounds have in plants.”

The research is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/nchembio/">Nature Chemical Biology</a>.

Catnip may give experts insight into cancer fighting treatments

The largest new species discovered in a century has been making its home in Alabama and Florida: the reticulated siren, a type of giant salamander.

The reticulated siren lives in the swamplands of Alabama and the Florida panhandle, and has a long, eel-like body that is spotted like a leopard. 

“Sirens are abundant throughout the southern United States and are among the world’s largest amphibians, yet the biology, ecology, and phylogeography of this group is poorly-known,” the researchers wrote in their description of the new species, published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0207460">PLOS ONE</a>.

Like the other four known members of the Sirenidae family, the reticulated siren is completely aquatic, with external gills and front limbs only. It lives alongside other sirens, but shows a different enough set of traits to be a distinct species, the researchers wrote. It also grows to about two feet in length, they found.

The scientists first began hunting for the new species after hearing stories about it from residents who live near the swamps where the reticulated siren makes its home. Though it is not an eel, people were calling it a leopard eel.

“It was basically this mythical beast,” co-author Dr. David Steen told <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/">National Geographic</a>.

Steen and lead author Dr. Sean Graham first began hunting the creature while completing their doctoral degrees Alabama’s <a href="http://www.auburn.edu/">Auburn University</a>. But it wasn’t until 2009 that Steen managed to capture his first reticulated siren in Florida. Until then, all they’d had was tall tales and a few aging museum specimens.

The two researchers and their colleagues have continued searching for more of the animals since then, mostly as a side project. 

It took Steen and his colleagues about five years of hunting the creature to find enough samples to confirm it was a new species, he told the nature magazine. That’s partly because the reticulated siren enjoys living in murky swamp water, making them hard to spot from the surface, he said.

Biologists who study the elusive sirens have been eagerly awaiting confirmation of the reticulated siren as a new species.

“It was a long time coming,” Dr. Jennifer Stabile, an expert on sirens who works with <a href="https://fieldprojects.org/">Field Projects International</a>, told National Geographic. “People had been discussing this for decades, how these groups needed to be looked at because we knew that there were more species there than had been documented.”

Everything you know about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a lie. The truth? Reindeer have terrible color vision. They wouldn’t have known his nose was red – or green or orange, either, scientists explained in a presentation about the Science of Christmas.

Rudolph, who was created by Robert L. May in 1939 for a <a href="https://www.wards.com/">Montgomery Ward</a> advertising campaign, is the star of a song about a bullied reindeer whose glowing red nose saves a foggy Christmas day. In the song and a 1964 animated movie, Rudolph’s glowing red nose gives Santa’s other reindeer a beacon to follow so that they can make it through the fog and deliver gifts to good children.

But reindeers’ color vision doesn’t work that way, said Dr. Martin Stevens of the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/cornwall/research/facilitiesandcentres/cec/">Centre for Ecology and Conservation</a>.

“Reindeer can't see red light or tell the difference between red, orange and green, so they wouldn't be able to see the red of Rudolph's nose or the orange of carrots,” Stevens told the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">Daily Mail</a>. “They do have ultraviolet vision, and use this to see lichen hidden in the snow in the arctic.”

The ability to see in the ultraviolet range at the expense of better color vision could help protect the reindeer, Stevens said. The fur of wolves and other predators absorbs UV light rather than reflecting it like the snow.

“So a camouflaged white wolf to us would stand out to reindeer,” Stevens said.

The unique visual abilities mean reindeer are better adapted to the Arctic environment where they live, but they also shatter some favorite Christmas legends.

The research by Stevens and his colleagues was presented at <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">Exeter University</a>’s Science of Christmas event. Stevens and his team have also studied the eyesight and color vision of dogs and horses. 

It adds to a growing body of research around the Arctic animals, from their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reindeer-antlers-unbreakable/">unbreakable antlers</a> to their role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reindeer-slowing-climate-change/">slowing down climate change</a>.

So while scientists may not be writing papers about glowing red noses anytime soon, there are still plenty of reindeer games to study.

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>



Why does a 385-million-year-old forest matter today? It shows how dramatically forests can change Earth's climate. These ancient woodlands created the atmospheric conditions supporting complex life.



Understanding how prehistoric forests transformed the planet helps us appreciate modern forests' critical role in addressing climate change. Forests remain Earth's most effective carbon capture systems.



These prehistoric trees changed Earth's atmosphere by pulling massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the air. As we face modern climate challenges, this ancient forest reminds us of trees' incredible power to transform our planet's environment.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Santiago, the capital city of Chile. The city is located in the center of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, which has a population of about eight million people.&nbsp;



'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."



The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.

Lesotho: Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky" Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features northwest Lesotho in South Africa.



According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
