Imagine Earth has a giant set of underground “storage lockers” where we can tuck away carbon dioxide (CO₂) for centuries so it doesn’t heat the planet. Scientists call this geologic carbon storage. 



It sounds simple: capture CO₂ from factories, power plants, or even the air, pipe it deep underground into the tiny spaces inside certain rocks, and lock it there.



For years, underground storage of carbon dioxide looked and felt like a clever climate trick. Capture the gas, lock it in rock layers, and keep burning fossil fuels while claiming progress. 



The idea seemed safe because early estimates suggested nearly limitless space.



That illusion has collapsed. New research shows the planet’s usable underground storage capacity is far smaller than imagined. Instead of centuries of security, this cushion could run out within 200 years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-drops-sharply">Carbon storage drops sharply</h2>



Industry once placed global capacity at around 14,000 gigatons. A closer look, however, strips away risky regions - earthquake zones, fragile <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/construction-materials-could-store-carbon-in-homes-and-buildings-helping-the-climate/">ecosystems</a>, and crowded cities. What remains is only about 1,460 gigatonnes.



This tenfold drop changes everything. What once seemed endless is now a resource with strict boundaries, one that must be managed carefully. Every choice about how it is used carries long-term consequences. 



If reserved for short-term fixes, the world risks burning through it quickly. If protected for carbon removal, it could become a critical lifeline for stabilizing temperatures far into the future.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risks-hidden-beneath-the-surface">Risks hidden beneath the surface</h2>



Underground storage carries hazards. Injecting carbon can stir up seismic activity, reactivate faults, or open escape paths. Leaks into aquifers could acidify water and release toxic metals. 



Offshore storage avoids some human risks but adds cost and geopolitical disputes. Public pushback also limits expansion, with some governments blocking projects altogether.



Opposition often stems from fears of leaks, distrust of industry promises, and concerns that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-storage-mystery-emerges-in-the-southern-ocean/">storage</a> will be used to justify continued fossil fuel use. 



These challenges mean underground storage cannot expand smoothly or universally; every project faces technical, political, and social barriers that slow progress and shrink real-world potential.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-s-uncertain-future">Carbon storage’s uncertain future</h2>



Climate plans already assume storage will be vital to reach net zero. But if it mainly serves fossil fuel plants, reserves could vanish by 2200 - and every decade of delay accelerates that timeline. 



Deep emission cuts now ease future pressure, while procrastination forces heavier reliance on shrinking storage space. 



One promising strategy is to prioritize underground capacity for carbon removal rather than fossil fuel capture.



Direct air capture and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abandoned-farmland-can-be-used-for-climate-change-mitigation/">bioenergy</a> with carbon storage could actively draw carbon out of the atmosphere, offering a cooling effect. 



If the full capacity were dedicated to this role, global temperatures could fall by as much as 0.7 °C (1.3 °F), though in practice the impact may be closer to 0.4 °C (0.7 °F) because the climate system doesn’t respond perfectly symmetrically to removal and emission.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reserves-unevenly-spread-worldwide">Reserves unevenly spread worldwide</h2>



Storage is not shared fairly across the globe. The United States, Russia, and Australia hold large, stable reserves. Europe and India lose far more under stricter risk rules.



Meanwhile, some nations in Africa and South America have vast potential but little historic responsibility for emissions. That imbalance raises thorny questions of justice - who gets to use the storage, and on what terms. 



Should wealthy nations pay for access to reserves in countries that contributed less to the crisis? Or should those with the largest reserves prioritize their own development needs first? 



These questions highlight deep inequalities that will shape future climate negotiations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storage-can-only-buy-time">Storage can only buy time</h2>



Some experts argue the true potential is larger, pointing to decades of safe use in oil and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-largest-natural-hydrogen-deposit-discovery-is-worth-a-staggering-184-billion/">gas reservoirs</a>. 



They note that many depleted fields have held fluids securely for millions of years and could continue to hold injected carbon just as reliably.



Supporters of this view see existing infrastructure and technical expertise as proof that storage can operate at much greater scale than the conservative estimates suggest.



Even so, most researchers caution against treating underground storage as a limitless solution. It was never designed to be the final answer to climate change. 



At best, it should function as a bridge - a temporary measure that buys time while renewables expand, low-carbon industries mature, and societies shift away from fossil fuels.



In that sense, storage is less a cure and more a stabilizer, easing the transition without promising permanence. Its real value lies in supporting broader change, not replacing it.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-future-depends-on-choices">Carbon future depends on choices</h2>



The message is clear: underground storage is limited, risky, and unevenly distributed. It can help, but only if used strategically. 



That means prioritizing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/states-taking-action-on-their-own-can-cut-half-of-u-s-emissions/">emission cuts</a>, expanding clean energy, and reserving storage for removing carbon already in the air.



Treating it as infinite would squander one of the few tools that could still reverse warming, leaving future generations with fewer options, higher risks, and a far narrower path to a stable climate.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09423-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a>.

The <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency</a> (EPA) has issued significantly fewer fines for polluters in the last two years under the Trump Administration than in previous years.

The amount of civil penalties for polluters in the past year has dropped to an all-time low since 1994, according to an extensive report by the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/civil-penalties-for-polluters-dropped-dramatically-in-trumps-first-two-years-analysis-shows/2019/01/24/7384d168-1a82-11e9-88fe-f9f77a3bcb6c_story.html?utm_term=.cdb24f0a23a7">Washington Post</a>. 

An analysis of the Environmental Protection Agency’s enforcement office data shows that the number of fines received by the EPA during the past two years was significantly lower than yearly averages received in previous decades. 

The EPA average for civil fines was over $500 million per year and last year that number amounted to just $72 million. 

A former head of the EPA’s enforcement office, Cynthia Giles, who worked under the Obama Administration conducted the analysis. 

Giles explained to the Washington Post that even after adjusting for inflation, the current amount of civil penalty fines represents a staggering decline under the Trump Administration and brings up concerns that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-protect-environment/">EPA is not adequately protecting the environment</a> or American people against unlawful polluters. 

“The public expects EPA to protect them from the worst polluters,” Giles said in an interview. “The Trump EPA is not doing that. What worries me is how industry will respond to EPA’s abandonment of tough enforcement.”

When asked to comment on the analysis, EPA officials said that it could not confirm the analysis due to the shutdown. The EPA is, however, quick to counter these concerns by saying that the agency is taking on a different, proactive approach to ensuring that companies adhere to the law. 

Rather than fining companies after the fact, the EPA is working with companies to keep pollution down and make sure companies are complying with environmental protections. 

“And I think the more compliance assurance that we have, the fewer enforcement actions we need to take,” EPA head Andrew Wheeler said during his confirmation hearing. 

Wheeler also said that in 2018, the EPA had been involved in more criminal cases than the year before. However, even after taking in Wheeler’s words into account, the fact of the matter is civil fines are on the decline. 

“But even when excluding the two biggest settlements over the past two decades, the Trump administration’s total last year represented a roughly 54 percent drop from the annual average,” wrote <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/civil-penalties-for-polluters-dropped-dramatically-in-trumps-first-two-years-analysis-shows/2019/01/24/7384d168-1a82-11e9-88fe-f9f77a3bcb6c_story.html?utm_term=.cdb24f0a23a7">Washington Post</a> reporters Juliet Eilperin and Brady Dennis.

Civil penalties are meant to serve as a punishment for companies that profit unlawfully from dumping chemicals into the environment, contaminating watersheds, and emitting pollutants into the atmosphere to name a few offenses. 

 “The troubling lack of enforcement not only threatens the water we drink and the air we breathe, but also sends a dangerous message to polluters that EPA will continue to turn a blind eye,” Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) told the Washington Post. “I’m particularly concerned that EPA’s already weak enforcement will be further crippled by the ongoing Trump government shutdown.”

There is a growing collection of studies which demonstrate the shocking impacts that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-weather-worse/">climate change</a> will have on our planet. According to a new study from Japan, global warming may even affect the proportion of babies who are born male or female.

Researchers have determined that more boys will be born in places where temperatures rise, while fewer boys will be born among other environmental changes, such as extreme weather events.

Study lead author Dr. Misao Fukuda, who is the founder of the <a href="http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~fukuda8767/english/index.html">M&amp;K Health Institute</a> in Hyogo, explained to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/">CNN</a> that conceptions of boys are particularly vulnerable to external stress factors.

Last year, the team published a separate study that was focused on births in regions where extreme weather events had caused major stress, including the Hyogo Prefecture after the Kobe earthquake of 1995, Tohoku after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima disaster of 2011, and the Kumamoto Prefecture after the 2016 earthquakes.


Looking into births nine months after the disasters, the experts found that the proportion of male babies born in these prefectures declined by up to 14 percent compared to the previous year. 

Fukuda told CNN in an email that pressure stemming directly from weather events associated with global warming may also affect the sex ratio. While the underlying cause is unclear, Fukuda theorized that changes in sex ratios are due to the sensitivity of male-bearing sperm cells, male embryos, or male fetuses to stress. 

A separate study from the <a href="http://www.utu.fi/en">University of Turku</a> in Finland found that “warmer temperatures bring sons.” The investigation, which was focused on the Sami people of Northern Finland, revealed that there was a 0.06 percent increase in the ratio of newborn boys compared with girls for every degree Celsius of temperature rise.

“Not a dramatic influence at first sight but it should be remembered that in large populations such effect size might mean thousands of 'extra' boys annually,” study author Samuli Helle said in an email.

Ray Catalano is a professor in the School of Public Health at the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a>. He explained to CNN that the impacts of global warming will also drive the process of natural selection in utero.


“For every society, for every year, the human being most likely to die (prematurely) is male infants. And that's true for every society that we have data for,” Professor Catalano told CNN.

“If you start to change the environment relatively quickly - within 100, 150 years; in evolutionary time, that's a blink of the eye - what that means is that you're going to change the environment in which human gestations occur.”

A team of researchers led by <a href="https://www.uu.se/en">Uppsala University</a> has found that a spike in global temperatures around 56 million years ago was caused, in part, by a major volcanic eruption on the Isle of Skye. The study provides the first evidence of a large-scale explosive eruption in modern-day Scotland.

Several times in Earth's history, volcanic eruptions have been blamed for massive climate disturbances. Around 56 million years ago, global temperatures abruptly increased by 5-8 degrees Celsius in an event that is referred to as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM).

Experts have linked the PETM to volcanic activity in Greenland, the British Isles, and in the present-day North Sea region. For the first time, the new study has revealed that an eruption in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/scotland-bans-animals-circuses/">Scotland</a> may have also contributed to the PETM.

The research team, which also included experts from the Universities of Durham and St. Andrews in the UK, studied volcanic rocks called pitch stones from islands more than 30 kilometers apart in the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland.

Using several different methods to compare the pitch stones, including isotope geochemistry, the experts found strong evidence of a major eruption in a region that is the Isle of Skye today. The geochemical data point to the Red Hills as the most likely vent area for this large eruption. 

Based on this vent location, a reconstruction suggests that the eruption was similar in magnitude to the Krakatoa eruption of 1883, which is one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic eruptions in known history.

Scientists have long believed that the Scottish sector of the North Atlantic Volcanic province did not experience any large explosive eruptions at the time of the PETM. The new findings, however, contradict this theory.

Volcanic eruption in Scotland contributed to abrupt global warming

A team of researchers led by Uppsala University has found...

U.S west coast residents have long feared “the big one,” an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cities-earthquake/">earthquake </a>with a magnitude 9.0 (or higher) along the San Andreas Fault or Cascadia Subduction Zone that could cause widespread damage and devastation.

But seismologists may now be one step closer to predicting the big one thanks to new research that sheds light into seismic activity preceding large earthquakes. 

Researchers from <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/">Oregon State University</a> conducted a study analyzing seismic activity along the Blanco Transform Fault off the coast of Oregon. It’s an incredibly active fault, and every 14 or so years, the area generates an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 or greater.

The study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, helps explain the link between aseismic slips and seismic activity. 

Aseismic slips, also called silent or slow slips, describe a fault slip or displacement and movement along a fault fracture zone that does not generate any notable seismic activity. Typically, as two plates slide, collide, or subduct, this generates a large amount of energy and produces earthquakes. 

The researchers found that slow slips can trigger seismic activity even if the actual fault movement of the silent slip itself doesn’t produce any shaking. 

“Slow slip directly triggers seismic slip - we can see that,” said Vaclav Kuna, a co-corresponding author of the study. “The findings are very interesting and may have some broader implications for understanding how these kinds of faults and maybe other kinds of faults work.” 

The researchers placed 55 seismometers along the Blanco Fault at the bottom of the ocean and recorded seismic activity for one year from 2012 to 2013. Overall, the researchers collected seismic data on over 1,600 Blanco Ridge earthquakes. 

“It's a very seismically active fault that generates significant earthquakes at higher rates than the majority of faults on land, making it ideal for studying the process of earthquake generation,” said Kuna.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone, which researchers have predicted could produce a massive 9.0 or greater quake, sits between the Blanco Fault and Oregon coastline. 

“The Blanco fault is only 400 kilometers offshore,” said John Nabelek, Kuna’s co-corresponding author. “A slip on Blanco could actually trigger a Cascadia Subduction slip; it would have to be a big one, but a big Blanco quake could trigger a subduction zone slip.”

The researchers also found that large earthquakes are preceded by either shallow mantle creeps or seismic swarms. Creep describes slow and steady movement along a fault line. 

“The crust is fully coupled - all slip is released in a seismic way,” said Kuna. “Fault in the shallow mantle is partly coupled, partly not, and releases slip both seismically and aseismically. The deep mantle is fully creeping, uncoupled, with no earthquakes. But the fault is loaded by this creep from beneath - it's all driven from beneath. Our results also show that an aseismic fault slip may trigger earthquakes directly, which may have implications for active faults on land.”

Renewable energy sources, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-power-dominated-investments/">solar and wind power</a>, are becoming increasingly popular and are supplying more electricity to power grids, employing more people, and drawing investors than ever before.

Fossil fuels, specifically natural gas, remain the primary source of energy for the United States and much of the world. Meanwhile, the <a href="https://www.eia.gov/">US Energy Information Administration (EIA)</a> has recently published a <a href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=38053&amp;src=email#">report</a> projecting the continued rise of non-hydroelectric renewable energy. 

For at least the next two years, solar and wind power will be the fastest growing source of generated electricity for the United States, the report found.

Coal is on a downhill slide, despite the Trump administration’s heavy push for fossil fuels and vocal support for the coal industry. 

But the coal industry can’t compete with the boom in natural gas, as natural gas supplied 35 percent of total US electricity generation in 2018 whereas coal provided only 28 percent of US energy needs. This was a stark change from 2010, when coal generated 45 percent of the total power generation. 

“Coal is just an expensive technology that can no longer compete,” Kingsmill Bond, a new energy strategist at Carbon Tracker, told <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/21/business/solar-wind-coal-power-renewable-energy/index.html">CNN</a>. 

Natural gas continues to race ahead of coal, and 2016 was the first year that natural gas surpassed coal power plants in electricity supply. However, one of the biggest takeaways of the new report by the EIA is the projected growth of renewables. 

According to the report, solar power generated electricity will increase by 10 percent in 2019 and 17 percent in 2020. Wind generation will see a similar boom and electricity produced from wind power will increase by 12 and 14 percent over the next two years. 

Currently, solar power is the third-largest renewable energy source in the US, and the EIA reports that solar, wind and other non-hydroelectric renewable energy sources will generate 13 percent of total electricity in the US in 2020. 

Renewable energy is a booming industry, and the renewable energy sector has one of the fastest growing workforces in the world. This new report shows that renewables are becoming more reliable and could soon compete with fossil fuels in meeting the world’s energy demands.

Despite worldwide concerns about climate change and global warming, carbon emissions reached a record high in 2018. In the United States alone, <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/us-carbon-emissions-increased-2018/">emissions</a> increased by an estimated 3.4 percent. A new study from <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/">Columbia University</a> has quantified the effects of extreme weather events on terrestrial carbon storage, and the results confirm the urgency of lowering carbon emissions. 

The team set out to understand how variability in the hydrological cycle, which  includes droughts and floods, affects the capacity of the continents to capture and store CO2. The researchers found that wetter-than-normal years do not compensate for losses of carbon uptake during drier years.

Currently, the ocean and the terrestrial biosphere absorb about 50 percent of the carbon dioxide produced by human activities.

“It is unclear, however, whether the land can continue to uptake anthropogenic emissions at the current rates,” said study lead author Professor Pierre Gentine. “Should the land reach a maximum carbon uptake rate, global warming could accelerate, with important consequences for people and the environment. This means that we all really need to act now to avoid greater consequences of climate change.”

Climate scientists have predicted that extreme events will increase in frequency and intensity in the future, which we are already witnessing today. Rainfall patterns are also expected to change, affecting the ability of the Earth's vegetation to uptake carbon.

To measure the amount of carbon stored in vegetation and soil, the researchers analyzed net biome productivity (NBP), which is the net gain or loss of carbon from a region. Using four Earth system models, the team ran a series of experiments to isolate reductions in NBP that are specifically due to changes in soil moisture.

The experts managed to isolate the effects of changes in long-term soil moisture trends as well as the impacts of short-term variability, such as the effects of floods and droughts, on the ability of the land to uptake carbon.

“We saw that the value of NBP, in this instance a net gain of carbon on the land surface, would actually be almost twice as high if it weren't for these changes (variability and trend) in soil moisture,” said study co-lead author and PhD student Julia Green. “This is a big deal! If soil moisture continues to reduce NBP at the current rate, and the rate of carbon uptake by the land starts to decrease by the middle of this century - as we found in the models - we could potentially see a large increase in the concentration of atmospheric CO2 and a corresponding rise in the effects of global warming and climate change.”

It is still not fully understood how plants respond to water stress, and the team will continue to work on improving representations of vegetation response to soil moisture changes.

“Essentially, if there were no droughts and heat waves, if there were not going to be any long-term drying over the next century, then the continents would be able to store almost twice as much carbon as they do now,” said Professor Gentine. “Because soil moisture plays such a large role in the carbon cycle, in the ability of the land to uptake carbon, it's essential that processes related to its representation in models become a top research priority.”

Extreme weather is limiting the Earth’s ability to store carbon

A study from the <a href="http://www.iiasa.ac.at/">International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis</a> (IIASA) has confirmed that there is a causal relationship between climate, conflict, and migration. While there has been plenty of speculation that such a link existed, the scientific evidence was lacking. 

In recent decades, environmental conditions have been blamed for creating political unrest and civil war, followed by waves of migration. One major example is the ongoing Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011. In addition, <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/asylum-seekers-dont-burden-economies/">people seeking refuge</a> from conflict in Africa are moving into coastal Mediterranean countries in Europe.

The research team set out to investigate the association between climate change and migration. They found that under certain circumstances, climate conditions do lead to increased migration but that this happens indirectly - as a result of conflict.

“This research touches upon the topic widely covered in the media. We contribute to the debate on climate-induced migration by providing new scientific evidence,” said study co-author Raya Muttarak.

The researchers analyzed migration patterns associated with conflict by collecting data on asylum applications from 157 countries that had been submitted between 2006 and 2015. To examine the climate conditions in the countries the asylum seekers were leaving, the team used a standardized <a href="https://climatedataguide.ucar.edu/climate-data/standardized-precipitation-evapotranspiration-index-spei">index</a> that measures droughts and their intensity based on precipitation, evaporation, transpiration, and temperature. In addition, conflict was assessed through data on battle-related deaths from the <a href="http://ucdp.uu.se/">Uppsala Conflict Data Program</a> (UCDP).

All three datasets were applied to the team's modeling framework, along with additional information such as the distance between country of origin and destination, population size, and the political status of the countries.

The researchers determined that climate change played a substantial role in migration patterns, with more severe droughts worsening conflict.

“Climate change will not cause conflict and subsequent asylum-seeking flows everywhere. But in a context of poor governance and a medium level of democracy, severe climate conditions can create conflict over scarce resources,” said study co-author Crespo Cuaresma.

According to the researchers, concerns relating to climate change-induced conflict and the subsequent migration should be considered in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The world’s groundwater reserves, a crucial source of drinking water, are in danger of depletion, according to a new climate change study. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/">Cardiff University</a> say that future generations could be faced with an “environmental time bomb” as it could take 100 years or more to see the full impacts of climate change and drought on groundwater. 

Groundwater refers to a complex system of underground water stored in rocks, soil, and sand and billions of people rely on this large stock of freshwater for drinking water and crop irrigation. 

Rainfall replenishes groundwater resources, but as climate change causes increases in temperatures drought and weather extremes, precipitation could become scarce which could dry up groundwater stores. 

Unlike the visible signs of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-shortages-reservoir-levels/">receding water levels on the surface</a>, groundwater reserves are more difficult to analyze, and the impacts of climate change are not as immediate as they are for lakes, streams, and oceans. 

The researchers used modeling and hydrologic datasets to determine how long it would take for the world’s groundwater reserves to respond to climate change. 

The results were published in the journal Nature Climate Change, and the researchers found that groundwater in humid and wetter regions will react quickly to changes in precipitation. Groundwater in drier areas will take longer to respond to climate change. 

“Our research shows that groundwater systems take a lot longer to respond to climate change than surface water, with only half of the world’s groundwater flows responding fully within ‘human’ timescales of 100 years,” said Mark Cuthbert, a lead author of the research, in a <a href="http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/news/view/1421604-warning-for-worlds-groundwater-reserves">Cardiff University news release</a>.

Having a more accurate understanding of how the world’s groundwater reserves will respond to climate change is essential especially for the regions that may not see any impacts for years. 

“It is essential that the potential for these initially hidden impacts is recognized when developing water management policies, or climate change adaptation strategies for future generations,” said Cuthbert.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-krill-ocean-acidification/">Krill</a> are a key food source for many marine animals including whales, penguins, seabirds, seals, and fish. Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans that swim in vast swarms that are sometimes dense and wide enough that they can be viewed from space, according to <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/invertebrates/group/krill/">National Geographic</a>.

Unfortunately, Antarctic krill populations appear to be declining. A new study has found that climate change is driving Antarctic krill southward and changing species distribution which could have an irreversible impact on the Southern Ocean food web.

The study was led by researchers from the <a href="https://www.pml.ac.uk/">Plymouth Marine Laboratory</a> and the <a href="https://www.bas.ac.uk/">British Antarctic Survey</a> and published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Not only did the researchers find that krill are shifting towards the South Pole, but the further north you go, the steeper the declines in krill density.

The shifts are bad news for the many species that rely on krill, and the study shows that krill distribution predictions based on environmental changes are coming true.

Researchers have been collecting data on Antarctic Krill since the 1920s. At first, the data was meant to help inform whale conservation efforts but the researchers identified an interesting trend in krill distribution in the data.

The researchers say that from the 1980s onwards, the data shows clear changes in distribution and density in Antarctic krill populations.

“Our results suggest that over the past 40 years, the amount of krill has, on average, gone down, and also the location of the krill has contracted to much less of the habitat,” Simeon Hill, a lead author of the study, told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-46953652">BBC News</a>. “That suggests all these other animals that eat krill will face much more intense competition with each other for this important food resource.”

Krill feed on phytoplankton, and the distribution changes likely have a lot to do with the krill’s search for abundant food and a more hospitable habitat with more sea ice.

The late 80s saw a climate oscillation called the Southern Annular Mode which produced warmer temperatures and reduced sea ice coverage.

According to the BBC, the Southern Annular Mode is one of the main drivers of krill distribution changes in recent years. The researchers also found changes in krill size. 

“And that's because the population has increasingly become dominated by older and larger animals,” Hill told BBC News. “This is a result of a decline in the number of krill entering the population - what we call juvenile recruitment.”

The study shows how sensitive the Antarctic ecosystem is to climate change and calls for stronger climate change mitigation to protect the Southern Ocean food web from collapsing as krill get more scarce.

Changes in Antarctic krill numbers could disrupt an entire food web

A subglacial <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/operation-icebridge-returns-to-antartica/">Antarctic</a> lake buried beneath a kilometer of ice contains the remains of ancient life that have been preserved for thousands of years. 

Researchers that drilled into Lake Mercer to study the lake and collect sediment samples found carcasses of crustaceans, a tardigrade, and even preserved plant material in the mud collected from the lake floor. 

The discovery was part of the <a href="https://salsa-antarctica.org/concept-and-purpose/">Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access</a> expedition which used a high-pressure water drill to melt a small hole through the thick layer of ice that sits above Lake Mercer. 

This is the first time that the lake has ever been explored in depth, as previously, radar and remote sensing technology were the only way to access the lake. 

After cleaning mud off a water temperature instrument, David Hardwood, a micro-paleontologist who was part of the SALA expedition, examined the mud under a microscope, according to a release from <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Hardwood found diatom shells and crustacean carcasses that looked relatively new. 

“It looked really fresh,” Hardwood told Nature. “Like something that had been living.”

Lake water samples that were collected were also analyzed and revealed that the lake was teeming with bacteria and had plenty of oxygen to support life. 

At first, Hardwood was concerned that the equipment used to measure the water temperature might have been contaminated, and so the SALA team cleaned the equipment and dropped it back in the lake for another test. Again, Hardwood found ancient animal remains. 

The ancient signs of life are both exciting and puzzling for the researchers who discovered them, according to Nature.

It is unclear how the carcasses, shells, and microbes got there in the first place, especially since some of the ancient species discovered used to live on or near land.

One potential theory is that the creatures originated from ponds in the Transantarctic Mountains near Lake Mercer and a period of warming washed sediment and organic material into the lake which was then covered by ice as temperatures shifted. 

The next step for the SALA researchers is to carbon date the organic material found in the mud, which could help show exactly how and when the different animals ended up in Lake Mercer.

A new study has revealed that the growing popularity of Prosecco may come along with a high environmental cost. Researchers have found that the Veneto region of northeastern Italy is losing an enormous amount of soil across its steep hillside in the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/winemakers-switch-grapes-climate/">vineyards</a> used for Prosecco production.  

The worldwide demand for Prosecco is growing at the fastest rate of any sparkling wine. For example, a 2016 assessment of global wine and spirits trends by <a href="https://www.theiwsr.com/">IWSR</a> predicted that Prosecco would grow by 36 percent through 2020, while Champagne would show only around one percent growth over the same time period. 

Currently, Northeast Italy is producing 400 million bottles of Prosecco per year, with 90 million bottles coming out of the historical Prosecco sector between the towns of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. This area is defined as the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG), where the highest quality wine standards are enforced.

A team of experts led by the <a href="https://www.unipd.it/en/">University of Padova</a> set out to investigate the soil erosion rate among vineyards in the DOCG area. The goal of the study was to calculate a type of “soil footprint” for Prosecco production, identify the hardest hit areas, and to develop mitigation strategies. 

The investigation revealed that 400,000 tons of soil is lost every year in the vineyards. While wine production is not the only source of soil erosion in the DOCG area, the research suggests that vineyards are responsible for nearly 75 percent of the total loss.

Based on an annual production of 90 million bottles of Prosecco, the experts calculated that each bottle was associated with a loss of 4.4 kilograms of soil.

Caroline Mazzey, a plant scientist at Hadlow College, was shocked by the results of the study. Mazzey told <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/">New Scientist</a>: “I find myself in disbelief. It’s more soil than the physical volume of the bottle.”

Vineyards have very little vegetation, which makes the soil highly susceptible to being washed away by rainfall. The researchers suggested that erosion could be substantially reduced by allowing grass to grow between rows of vines. 

However, an association representing DOCG Prosecco producers told New Scientist that this is already a common management practice. The consortium also disputed the findings of the study, with a representative stating: “These soil erosion estimates are, in our view, inaccurate. Managing erosion is a primary interest of the winegrower.”

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, is published online at <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/">bioRxiv.org</a>.

This is the beginning of Virgin founder Richard Branson’s <a href="https://www.virgin.com/richard-branson/journey-bottom-belize-blue-hole">personal account </a>of diving down to the bottom of the Great Blue Hole in Belize. Unfortunately, what they found at the bottom was <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-ocean-floor/">plastic</a>.

The findings of the expedition emphasize yet again the extent of the world’s plastic problem and prove that no corner of the ocean remains free of plastic pollution.

Branson was part of the first-ever submersible dive to the bottom of the Blue Hole, alongside Fabian Cousteau, a submersible pilot and the grandson of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau and Erika Bergman.

The goal of the expedition was to dive down to the bottom of the large sinkhole and explore the underwater cave system. Two three-person submersible submarines were sent to explore the hole, according to the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6606919/What-bottom-Belizes-Great-Blue-Hole-Plastic-bottles.html">Daily Mail</a> which reported on the expedition.

Divers, geologists, and other researchers conducted companion research projects as part of the expedition, including a 3D scan of the Blue Hole and cave system.

Belize’s Great Blue Hole is a famous landmark and tourist site that was once part of dry land before being submerged by rising sea levels around 10,000 years ago.

Expedition data may help provide insight into this event and show how climate change has impacted land masses and changed Earth’s geography over time.

Data collected during the dive was limited due to the extreme conditions at the bottom of the hole. The hole is 410 feet deep and pitch black at the lowest depths.

The expedition marks the first time that a modern submersible has traveled to the bottom of the sinkhole and diving down to the bottom was only the beginning according to Custeau.

“There's a lot of discoveries left to be had there, including finding the sediment, looking at the variations in the walls, the oxygen, and CO² content,” Custeau told the Daily Mail. “There's a whole laundry list of things that we are going to be doing there that haven't been done.”

But perhaps the most concerning takeaway of the expedition is the plastic water bottles that have made their way to the bottom of the Great Blue Hole.

“The real monsters facing the ocean are climate change – and plastic. Sadly, we saw plastic bottles at the bottom of the hole, which is a real scourge of the ocean. We’ve all got to get rid of single-use plastic,” Branson wrote in his blog.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.

Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.

Imagine Earth as a giant snowball, frozen solid from the North Pole to the equator. This wasn't the plot of a science fiction movie – it was our planet's reality 700 million years ago during an extreme ice age that has puzzled scientists for decades.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-discovery">The discovery</h2>



Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-combination-of-climate-factors">The combination of climate factors</h2>



The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Volcanic activity typically releases CO2 into the atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warm.



Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below 200 parts per million – less than half of today's levels – glaciation engulfed the entire planet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-climate-implications">Modern climate implications</h2>



Published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/geology" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geology</a>, this research provides crucial insights into Earth's climate system. Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
