Polar ice is rapidly vanishing in both Antarctica and the South Pole, and the world keeps circling back to the same question: Can we use technology to stop it? 



A new review takes a hard look at five of the boldest proposals for slowing polar melt - and comes back with a clear answer: not yet, and maybe not ever.



The stakes are rising fast. In 2025, Arctic sea ice hit its lowest winter maximum on record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (<a href="https://nsidc.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSIDC</a>). 



That trend highlights why people keep dreaming up big fixes - and why scientists are now asking tough questions about whether those fixes could actually work.



Led by Professor Martin Siegert of the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, the team evaluated the five ideas against six yardsticks: effectiveness, feasibility, scale and timing, environmental risk, cost, and governance. 



Their conclusion is sobering - especially for the Arctic and Antarctic, where even small missteps can cascade into major problems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-ideas-bigger-costs">Big ideas, bigger costs</h2>



The five ideas are simple to list and hard to pull off. They include <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-small-aerosols-influence-cloud-formation/">stratospheric aerosol</a> injection, which means spraying reflective particles high in the atmosphere, and seabed curtains to block warm currents from ice shelves.



Other ideas are sea ice management by boosting albedo with beads or by thickening ice, basal water removal under glaciers, and ocean iron fertilization (OIF) to stimulate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-at-risk-global-warming-threatens-the-oceans-lifeline/">plankton</a> that carry carbon to the depth.



Cost alone should make readers pause. This analysis estimates that an 80-kilometer (about 50-mile) sea curtain would cost roughly 80 billion dollars over ten years. That figure comes before ongoing maintenance and unforeseen impacts are counted.



"Mid-century is approaching, but our time, money, and expertise is split between evidence-backed net zero efforts and speculative geoengineering projects," said Professor Siegert.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aerosols-can-t-save-the-polar-ice">Aerosols can’t save the polar ice</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosol-formation-earths-lower-atmosphere-soas/">Stratospheric aerosol</a> injection sounds straightforward: add particles like sulfur dioxide high in the stratosphere to reflect sunlight.



Over the poles it runs into physics, since winter darkness removes sunlight for months and cold-season circulation flushes aerosols out faster.



Even when the sun is up, snow and ice already reflect a lot of light, which weakens the effect. 



The review also flags known risks, including ozone loss, shifts in rainfall, and the chance of rapid warming if injections stop after years of masking greenhouse heating.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thicker-ice-plan-falls-short">Thicker ice plan falls short</h2>



One attention-grabbing idea is to scatter tiny hollow glass microspheres over first-year <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abrupt-collapse-of-arctic-sea-ice-may-come-with-little-warning/">sea ice</a> to reflect more light. 



A 2022 paper calculated that roughly 360 megatons of beads per year would be needed and found the beads can darken some surfaces enough to accelerate ice loss.



Support for that approach also sagged outside the lab. A 2025 announcement from the Arctic Ice Project said the nonprofit was winding down after ecotoxicology tests raised potential food web risks.



What about thickening sea ice by pumping seawater onto the surface so it freezes? 



The review points out a practical wall here too, since it would mean deploying and maintaining huge numbers of devices across drifting, breaking ice in brutal conditions for years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glacier-pumping-hits-hard-wall">Glacier pumping hits hard wall</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glaciers-from-the-rockies-to-the-alps-are-melting-much-faster-than-expected/">Speeding glaciers</a> depend partly on water at the base that reduces friction. Drilling through miles of moving ice and pumping out subglacial water across wide areas are a massive challenge.



Keeping the holes from freezing shut demands power, logistics, and precision that exceed current polar field capacity.



Fertilizing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-storage-mystery-emerges-in-the-southern-ocean/">Southern Ocean</a> with iron to grow more plankton has been tested many times. A policy brief notes that only one ship experiment - the <a href="https://epic.awi.de/id/eprint/15162/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Iron Fertilization Experiment</a> - saw strong carbon export to more than 9,800 feet, where storage could last centuries. 



It also found that nitrous oxide produced during remineralization can offset 5 to more than 40 percent of any carbon gains.



Even if results looked better, governance would still be a hurdle. The London Convention’s 2013 amendment restricts large-scale ocean fertilization to legitimate research, not carbon markets. 



The review adds that the <a href="https://www.ats.aq/index_e.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic Treaty System</a> would require strict environmental review for most polar interventions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harsh-realities-of-polar-ice-testing">Harsh realities of polar ice testing</h2>



Polar work windows are short, travel distances are long, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lightning-near-the-north-pole-signals-major-climate-shifts/">storms</a> and sea ice can cancel whole seasons. 



That is before counting iceberg hazards, darkness, and the difficulty of powering heavy equipment cleanly without leaving black carbon on the snow.



Scale also defeats many of these ideas. The ocean and ice do not respect neat borders, so diverting warm water from one polar ice shelf can steer it toward another. 



Slowing one fast-flowing glacier can also redirect stress or subglacial water and speed up a neighbor.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cutting-co2-still-works-best">Cutting CO2 still works best</h2>



The most reliable lever we have is still cutting carbon dioxide quickly. 



The review emphasizes that temperatures tend to stabilize within about two decades after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-technology-is-urgently-needed-to-save-the-climate/">net-zero CO2</a>, which slows the drivers of polar ice loss and gives ecosystems and communities a fighting chance.



Protecting polar biodiversity and local livelihoods also means expanding and enforcing strong protected areas. 



It also requires improving monitoring and supporting Indigenous knowledge and leadership in the Arctic. These steps reduce harm now without adding new risks to already stressed systems.



The study is published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/science/articles/10.3389/fsci.2025.1527393/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frontiers in Science</a>.

Polar ice is melting fast, and there is no current technology that can stop it

Polar ice is rapidly vanishing in both Antarctica and the South Pole, and the world keeps circling back to the same question: Can we use technology to stop it? A new review takes a hard look at five of the boldest proposals for slowing polar melt - and comes back with a clear answer: not yet, and maybe not ever. The stakes are rising fast. In 2025, Arctic sea ice hit its lowest winter maximum on record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)....

Past research has claimed that the Earth went through a “global warming hiatus,” where for a period of time in the early 2000s, there was a slowdown in warming temperatures. By the end of 2017, over 200 published articles and studies revolved around this “pause.” 

However, two new studies published in the journal Environmental Research Letters disprove all evidence of a pause in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/island-nations-global-warming/">warming</a> and show that temperatures have in fact been steadily on the rise. 

“Many studies over the past decade have claimed to find a pause or slowdown in global warming and have typically posited this as evidence that is inconsistent with our understanding of global warming,” said James Risby, a lead author of one of the studies. “Global warming did not pause, but we need to understand how and why scientists came to believe it had, to avoid future episodes like this.”

Risby, part of the <a href="https://www.csiro.au/">Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation</a> (CSIRO Australia), and a team of researchers reassessed the pause studies to help put the data and claims into a historical context. 

The researchers made a note of how a “pause” had been identified and what methods were used in the studies while testing out different past and present datasets of global mean surface temperature (GMST). 

“Our findings show there is little or no statistical evidence for a ‘pause’ in GMST rise,” said Risby. “Neither the current data nor the historical data support it. Moreover, updates to the GMST data through the period of 'pause' research have made this conclusion stronger. But, there was never enough evidence to reasonably draw any other conclusion.”

For the second study, a team of researchers reviewed climate models and observations to identify mismatches of global warming rates that would help explain why past studies came to the conclusions they did. 

The researchers compared temperatures and projections of GMST of past climate models that were used in the pause studies and found that errors and misinterpretations of the predictions and data were made because of biases.

“We found the impression of a divergence - i.e. a divergence between the rate of actual global warming and the model projections - was caused by various biases in the model interpretation and in the observations. It was unsupported by robust statistics,” said Stephan Lewandowsky, the lead author of the second study and a professor from the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol.</a>

Once the researchers accounted for these biases and reviewed the data again, there was no evidence of a pause to be found. 

The two studies also provide some explanations for why so many past studies found evidence of a pause when in reality this was not the case, and the researchers note that perhaps data providers were not able to express the limitations of their data.

Another possible explanation could be that it takes time for researchers to correct a bias or inaccuracy in a study. 

“A final point to consider is why scientists put such emphasis on the ‘pause’ when the evidence for it was so scant,”  said Naomi Oreskes, a co-author of one of the studies from <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a>. “An explanation lies in the constant public and political pressure from climate contrarians. This may have caused scientists to feel the need to explain what was occurring, which led them inadvertently to accept and reinforce the contrarian framework.”

There was never a “pause” in global warming, scientists confirm

The world’s oceans absorb around 30 percent of atmospheric CO2 emissions, but as greenhouse gas emissions increase, so do CO2 levels in the sea, according to the <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/acidification.html">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)</a>. 

As carbon levels in the ocean rise, pH levels shrink and the oceans become more acidic. Ocean acidification is one of the primary drivers of coral bleaching, and it’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-acidification-marine-ecosystems/">disrupting many marine ecosystems</a>. 

A new study has found that increases in ocean acidification and ocean carbon levels could cause salmon to lose their sense of smell, a critical mechanism for survival that salmons rely on to avoid predators and navigate. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/">University of Washington</a> and the <a href="https://www.nwfsc.noaa.gov/">NOAA Fisheries' Northwest Fisheries Science Center</a> wanted to find out how projected CO2 levels in the ocean would impact a salmon’s ability to process smells.

“Salmon famously use their nose for so many important aspects of their life, from navigation and finding food to detecting predators and reproducing,” said Chase Williams, the lead author of the study. “So it was important for us to know if salmon would be impacted by future carbon dioxide conditions in the marine environment.” 

The results of the study were published in the journal Global Change Biology.

The researchers set up a lab experiment with three different tanks of saltwater with varying levels of pH. 

One tank had pH levels that matched current levels in Puget Sound where coho salmon are found, the second tank had lower pH levels to match Puget Sound projections 50 years from now, and the third had levels that matched predicted averages 100 years from now 

Juvenile coho salmon were placed in the tanks, and the researchers monitored their behavior in the new environments for two weeks.

The researchers then conducted several behavioral and neural tests to see how the differing pH levels impacted the salmon’s ability to sniff out dangers and potential predators. 

The fish were placed in a different tank that had salmon skin extract in the water, the scent of which would normally warn salmon of a predator attack nearby. 

If a salmon had spent time in a tank with higher CO2 levels, they were less responsive to the smell, and some didn’t even seem to notice. Normally the smell of the salmon skin extract would trigger a flight response in a salmon and the fish would swim away to hide from danger. 

The researchers also measured neural activity in the part of the brain where smell is processed, the olfactory bulb, and found that the increased CO2 disrupted normal activity and processing in that area for some of the salmon.

Gene expression for the salmon that spent time in the tanks with higher acidity was also changed. 

“At the nose level, we think the neurons are still detecting odors, but when the signals are processed in the brain, that's where the messages are potentially getting altered,” said Williams. 

The researchers plan to examine other species of fish to see if rising CO2 levels have a similar effect, but the results of this study are concerning given how important salmon are as a food source. 

“We're hoping this will alert people to some of the potential consequences of elevated carbon emissions,” said Andy Dittman, senior co-author of the study. “Salmon are so iconic in this area. Ocean acidification and climate change are abstract things until you start talking about an animal that means a lot to people.”

Salmon could lose their sense of smell due to ocean acidification

Rates of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rampant-overfishing-gulf-california/">overfishing</a> have increased over the past fifty years, and although there have been efforts to conserve and restore fisheries, a new study has found that conservation success is reliant on past habits. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.rutgers.edu/">Rutgers</a>, <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/">Princeton University</a> and <a href="https://www.yale.edu/">Yale University</a> discovered that conservation is much easier to keep up if restrictive measures are already put in place. 

However, if an area has a history of overfishing, conservation measures are much more difficult to implement. 

The results of the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that reducing harvests can spur sustainable conservation for years to come. 

“Surprisingly, we found that people often get trapped by their past decisions,” said Edward Tekwa, the lead author of the study. “If they start out overharvesting, they tend to continue overharvesting. But once people start conserving, this behavior is also self-perpetuating and gets amplified. Policies change slowly.” 

The researchers examined a global database of 217 fisheries from 1961 to 2009 taking into account maximum sustainable yields and harvest rates. The data was then used to develop a mathematical model to help explain the global patterns in fishery harvests.  

Of the 217 fisheries included in the study, the researchers found that 35 are influenced heavily by past instances of overfishing or conversation and only one successfully transitioned from a pattern of overfishing to conservation. 

Eleven of the fisheries remain chronically over-harvested, which calls into question previous theories about the collapse of fast-growing fisheries. 

“Our results challenge the conventional expectation that the collapse of fast-growing resources is unlikely,” said Tekwa. “But they also offer hope that conservation is much easier to continue once we start.”

The researchers did find that conservation efforts like the 2006 and 1996 revisions to the <a href="https://www.westcoast.fisheries.noaa.gov/whatwedo/msa/magnuson_stevens_act.html">Magnuson-Stevens Act</a> led the way to lasting conservation in some cases. 

The team suggests that the most over-harvested fisheries would be good targets for conservation and may be the easiest to implement lasting changes to because of their high economic value.  

“We found that highly productive, costly-to-harvest resources are paradoxically most susceptible to strong depletion, but also most receptive to strong conservation because of prevailing economic incentives,” the researchers wrote in their study.

Areas with a history of overfishing are more difficult to restrict

Rates of overfishing have increased over the past fifty years,...

We like to think that our lives are generally extended by the advanced technology of our times.  For the most part, this is true. Lives of our hunter gatherer ancestors were undoubtedly harder in many ways and on average much shorter.  The reality of many societies with less advanced medical, safety and food technology is much the same today as it must have been for everyone in the past.  In many places, someone is “old” at age 40. It’s important to realize that however much technology helps prolong our lives, it can also be a double edged sword.  

Some pollutants and environmental chemicals can shorten our lives or at least put them at risk.  Commonplace chemicals like BPA, which was used until very recently in plastic water bottles, sometimes create major health scares.  <a href="https://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/green-science/bpa.htm">How Stuff Works</a> reports that BPA is linked to increased risk for cancer and lower fertility rates among other health hazards.  It doesn’t stop with just water that comes from bottles either. Most readers will remember the ongoing water contaminant crisis in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-chief-systemic-problems-threaten-future-of-flint-water/">Flint, Michigan</a> and other parts of the US.  Water is obviously essential to our lives, just like breathing.  It turns out pollutants we breathe in might be threatening and shortening our lives as well.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traffic-air-pollution-puts-minorities-and-low-income-populations-at-risk/">Earth.com</a> has previously reported on the inequality of air pollution distribution inside the US.  Ethnic minorities and those living in poverty are more likely to be exposed to high levels of air pollution from traffic than others.  This significantly decreases life expectancy and increases the likelihood of death from cardiovascular related causes. The inequity doesn’t stop in the US either.  People in countries with less clean air regulation and pollution control often face an even steeper decrease in their life expectancies.

In many parts of Asia, one is struck by the prevalence of people wearing simple dust masks, at work, on the bus, just walking around.  There’s a good reason for the masks. Besides dust storms that are common in certain places, pollution is rampant in much of Asia. <a href="https://www.unicef.org/mongolia/Mongolia_air_pollution_crisis_ENG.pdf">UNICEF</a> reports that Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia has some of the highest pollution rates in the world. Air pollutants in the city reached 133 times the recommended exposure rate on January 30, 2018.  Over half the entire population of Mongolia, a land of steppe plains and fossil rich cliffs, lives in Ulaanbaatar. 

<a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-thailand-weather/bangkok-air-pollution-warning-children-asked-to-stay-indoors-idUSKBN1FS0ZF">Reuters</a> reported in February 2018 that Bangkok, a world hotspot of tourism issued pollutant warnings, was asking residents to wear masks.  Children and the elderly were cautioned to remain indoors. The <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/2166542/air-pollution-killing-1-million-people-and-costing-chinese">South China Morning Post</a> reported on December 13, 2018 that air pollution is killing one million people a year in China.  The pollution is also said to destroy corn, rice, wheat and soybeans. Of course the problem isn’t restricted solely to Asia and poorer parts of the US; it’s a problem that affects every corner of the globe at least to some small degree.  It’s a problem researchers at University of Chicago are now trying to face.

A new website created by the researchers, <a href="https://aqli.epic.uchicago.edu/">Air Quality of Life Index</a> (AQLI), shows the stark realities of the problem.  You can use the website to calculate how much life you might lose depending on where you live.  For instance, in the US, air pollution shortens life on average of only 0.1 years compared to the 4.3 years lost to air pollution if you live in India from pollution over the <a href="https://www.who.int/airpollution/en/">WHO</a> guidelines.  The website claims that air pollution is the ‘single greatest threat to human health globally’.  The average person loses two years to air pollution when the whole world is taken into account. Particulate matter seems to be the greatest problem when it comes to health risks from air pollution.

Incredibly small particles with diameters less than 10 micrometers can pass into our lungs and damage cells, increasing the risk of cancer.  Inflammation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and other lung problems, all common for smokers, can be caused just from the pollution in air.  Even smaller particles can cause more problems, because they can enter the bloodstream through the lungs. These smallest of inhaled particles can increase blood pressure, leading to strokes or heart attacks these particles even possibly damage the brain.  The possible long term effect could lead to Alzheimer’s or dementia. 

There is a small hope held out by the AQLI website as well.  You can look at air pollution the world over from 1998 to 2016.  Sliding back the world map to 1998, it’s easy to see that some parts of the world have much improved from just two decades ago.  Much of the eastern US, the midwest and west coast have improved in the life forecast from dirty air. Some of the west coast still has room to improve, but it’s heartening to see that there are ways to push back the problem.  Surprisingly, even places like China, long known for its horrible air pollution problem, have shown signs of improvement.

A <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/110/32/12936">study</a> published by the US National Academy of Sciences in 2013 shows the connection to shortened life and air pollution in China.  The government in an experimental approach, gave people free coal heaters to people living north of the Huai River, while keeping heaters from those to the south.  The results are stunning; those to the north with their coal heaters on average lost 5.5 years of life expectancy. This totals to 2.5 billion years of life expectancy lost on the 500 million people living north of the Huai River.  After the release of the study, the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/national/health-science/lost-years/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.55cb3b2d24a7&amp;wpisrc=nl_headlines&amp;wpmm=1">Washington Post</a> reports that the government of China launched a ‘war on pollution’.  Cities were forced to reduce emissions and industry pollution was curtailed.  Within just four years, PM 2.5, the smallest particular pollutant, concentrations were reduced by 32% on average.  Beijing is said to have reduced pollution by 20% just last year. Despite the hope of China’s change, not everywhere is showing improvement. 

Another <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2016GL068949">study</a> in Geophysical Research Letters from 2016 shows that air pollution lead to roughly 570,000 premature deaths in India in 2011.  Little is being done about the problem of air pollution in India. <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/5/8/17316978/india-pollution-levels-air-delhi-health">Vox</a> reported in October of this year that on a WHO list, 11 of 12 most polluted cities in the world, are found in India.  Refugees have even been known to flee some of India’s most polluted areas just to escape the toxic air. The exception to the list of Indian cities was Bamenda in Cameroon, showing that Africa has a growing pollution problem as well as Asia.  

In the US, the Clean Air Act of 1970, and the EPA make our lungs healthier and our lives potentially longer than in other parts of the world.  In the 70s, parts of the US had air pollution levels similar to those now found in Asia and we’ve worked hard to improve that situation. Still it’s not a story of universal improvement.  <a href="https://www.treehugger.com/environmental-policy/air-quality-fairbanks-alaska-worse-beijing.html">Treehugger.com</a> reported in 2013 that Fairbanks Alaska has worse air pollution than Beijing, largely because of unreported wood burning stoves.  The strength of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-clean-air-act-weaken/">Clean Air Act</a> and other regulations, here and abroad have the power to contribute to long, healthy lives.

Air pollution shortens life spans across the globe

A new retrospective study published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2018.00478/full">Frontiers in Marine Science</a> proves that environmental cleanup projects are economically feasible alternatives to coastal development projects. This conclusion was made after researchers analyzed the Boston Harbor cleanup initiative and estimated that the restored ecosystem is now valued between $30 and $100 billion, thus proving that the $5 billion cleanup process was well worth the money.

Famously dubbed “the dirtiest harbor in America” in the 20th century, Boston Harbor is now “the great American jewel,” thanks to restoration policies put into place in 1986. Raw sewage and polluted shores have been transformed into a healthy oasis for both humans and marine life to enjoy.

"The Boston Harbor cleanup led to a significant increase in private investment, and economic growth along the waterfront has outpaced the city's overall rate of increase," lead author, <a href="https://loop.frontiersin.org/people/569034/overview">Dr. Di Jin</a>, from the <a href="http://www.whoi.edu/">Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA,</a> said. "This shows that we need to give more consideration to ecosystem service benefits when evaluating policy options."

Dr. Jin notes that, most times, cleanup propositions only take the current value of polluted land into account rather than the estimated value of the land post-cleanup. This low-balling of polluted land value leads to decision-makers choosing industrial or residential development projects over environmental conservation projects.

But as Dr. Jin and his team found by way of developing an economic evaluation model, healthy ecosystems of any kind can add huge value to a city or town. For example, clean water and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/living-shorelines-protection-storms/">shorelines</a> can support fishing stocks and recreational sporting activities.

"The costly [Boston Harbor] project used almost 5 billion dollars of taxpayers' money," said Dr. Jin. "Yet this represents just 5%-16% of the total capitalized value of the ecosystem."

Researchers hope their findings show city and town officials everywhere that environmental cleanup projects can be just as beneficial, if not more beneficial, to overall land value. 

"Pollution control and cleanup is a common challenge facing many urban harbors around the world," Dr. Jin added. He concluded, "We hope that our study will provide useful information to decision makers and the public facing similar decisions on the viability of ecosystem restoration projects."

Study finds environmental cleanup projects economically justifiable

A new study following the aftermath of Hurricane Maria reveals how forests adjust to recover from such powerful storms.

Hurricane Maria was one of the most damaging and deadliest hurricanes on record and was the worst natural disaster to affect a U.S. territory. The storm’s <a href="https://www.weather.gov/sju/maria2017">75 mph winds</a> pummeled Puerto Rico’s forests and stripped many trees bare which hindered photosynthesis. 

Researchers from <a href="http://www.clemson.edu/">Clemson University</a> saw a unique opportunity to study how <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/hurricane-maria-transformed-the-forests-of-puerto-rico/">Puerto Rico’s tropical dry forests</a> adapt and recover following a hurricane. 

The researchers observed 13 dry forest species one month, eight months, and twelve months after the hurricane and compared the structure and composition of the leaves to leaves collected before the storm hit.

Following up for so many months after the hurricane helped the researchers determine if the changes leaf growth were temporary in response to the storm or sustained for months after. 

“Our study took us to the Guánica State Forest in southwest Puerto Rico, which comprises one of the best parcels of native dry forest in the Caribbean,” said Tristan Allerton, a member of the research team. “Rainfall here is extremely erratic, with huge variability within and between years. As a result, organisms are uniquely adapted to cope with unpredictable water availability.” 

The researchers monitored the shape and structure of new leaves after the hurricane and also attached sensors to the leaves to record CO2 storage. 

After Hurricane Maria, the researchers recorded an increase in CO2 uptake in eleven out of the thirteen species of trees examined.

Changes in leaf growth also showed that the trees after the hurricane were able to still capture enough light without expending any unnecessary energy on leaf growth. 

“A key finding was that the leaves of some of the species contained less chlorophyll than prior to the hurricane,” said Skip Van Bloem, who helped oversee the Allerton’s research. “Even though new leaves were better suited structurally to capture valuable resources, lower leaf quality could reduce leaf lifespan and the trees’ ability to produce energy.”

The results indicate that Carribean tropical dry forests can recover and adapt after a hurricane, but the question is if this trend can continue under the projected impacts of climate change and an increase in severe hurricanes. 

The composition of tropical dry forests will likely change under the added stresses of climate change as not all species will be able to recover or adapt as well as others, according to the study. 

“This would be a huge shame as Caribbean dry forests are known to have a higher proportion of endemic species than mainland dry forests. Many trees found there are also incredibly ancient, making these forests a living museum of biodiversity,” said Allerton.

Infectious diseases are commonly passed along from humans to animals, but a new study is the first to document human-linked pathogens on the isolated continent of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/adelie-penguins-antarctica/">Antarctica</a>. The researchers discovered antibiotic resistant microbes and other bacterial strains in bird poop, raising new concerns about the health of Antarctic bird colonies.

“It's reasonable to think that the rapid increase of tourism has increased the risk of pathogen invasion,” said study co-author Professor Jacob González-Solís of the <a href="https://www.ub.edu/web/ub/en/">University of Barcelona</a>. “Sooner or later the transmission of one of these pathogens is going to destroy a local population of birds.”

The investigation was focused on the droppings of hundreds of birds from 24 different species, such as rockhopper penguins and Atlantic yellow-nosed albatrosses. Between 2008 and 2011, the poop samples were collected at four sites across the Antarctic Ocean, including Livingston, Marion Island, Gough Island, and the Falkland Islands. These are all areas along bird migration routes that are frequented by tourists.

Within the fecal matter, the research team found traces of the bacteria Campylobacter jejuni, which is one of the most common sources of food poisoning in the United States and Europe. They also detected a strain of Salmonella that is typically associated with birds in urban areas, as well as an antibiotic-resistant strain of a gastrointestinal bug called Campylobacter lari.

Professor González-Solís predicts that, even though Salmonella and Campylobacter are not necessarily fatal, the pathogens could have “devastating consequences” to Antarctic bird colonies because they have never been exposed to these strains. According to the researchers, the bacteria could have originated from domestic poultry, tourist cruises, or from research centers.  

Kyle Elliott is an ornithologist and ecologist at McGill University, who was not involved in the research. He told <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science magazine</a>, “We often think of polar environments as being too cold and that disease transmission is not a huge threat, but the authors have clear evidence that bacteria can spread widely in polar environments.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/science-of-the-total-environment">Science of the Total Environment</a>.

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agriculture-higher-methane-emissions/">agricultural sector</a> is the largest source of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions, and now a new study has found that implementing carbon pricing in the farming industry could reduce emissions by 50 percent. 

Methane emissions from cows, nitrous oxide and other agricultural non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions present a major challenge to climate mitigation efforts. 

Carbon pricing involves putting a price on emissions. Instead of placing the burden of carbon and non-CO2 emissions on the public, carbon pricing targets the sources responsible, according to the <a href="http://www.worldbank.org/en/programs/pricing-carbon">World Bank</a>.

Researchers from the <a href="http://www.iiasa.ac.at/">International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis</a> found that changes in agricultural practices and a shift away from meat and dairy could reduce 15 percent of all agricultural methane and nitrous oxide emissions by 2050. 

A study detailing the researcher’s findings was published in the journal Nature Climate Change. 

If people reduced their meat and dairy consumption, it could further reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2e) by 23 percent. 

For the study, the researchers used four different global economic models to review the reduction potential of different carbon pricing strategies. 

“We gain insights on the contribution of different mitigation options across regions and identify robust emission reduction strategies both on the supply and demand side,” said Stefan Frank, the lead author of the study.

The team modeled eight carbon price strategies ranging from $20 per ton of emitted CO2e to $950 per ton of CO2 equivalent.

Previous studies have projected that $950 per ton of CO2e is what’s required to meet climate targets of limiting temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The higher the price, the more gigatons of CO2 emissions are reduced every year. According to the researchers, the carbon pricing models and changes in the beef and dairy industry alone could reduce agricultural emissions by two-thirds. 

The models showed that as carbon prices rise, agriculture practices would be exhausted and force emissions reductions through dietary changes and more sustainable agriculture practices. 

“Steering mitigation action towards a limited number of regions, such as Africa, China, India, and Latin America, and commodities such as beef and milk, which are characterized by relatively high emission intensities, would allow for the realization of substantial emissions savings on the supply side,” said Frank.

Last week saw the conclusion of the heated <a href="https://cop24.gov.pl/">COP24 United Nations Climate Conference</a> in Katowice, Poland. For two weeks, 25,000 delegates representing nearly 200 countries worked to find a way to keep the goals put in place by the Paris Climate Agreement, and it was not an easy task. 

Ultimately, it came down to a last minute deal on Saturday as the climate conference was wrapping up to agree on ways to keep the Paris Accord. 

The biggest takeaway of the conference is that even though a consensus was met, the deal left much to be desired and many of big issues were tabled for a later conference.

Brazil’s threat to leave the deal if a loophole was fixed that gave the country double credits for forest preservation was left for another year. 

The matter of credits is especially important because one of the main points of the conference was to agree on how governments will measure and report their emissions and any efforts to reduce emissions. 

As part of the Paris Accord, carbon credits are awarded to countries who are reducing emissions or preserving their natural carbon sinks, such as the Brazilian rainforest. 

Another major problem holding up negotiations at the conference was the refusal of countries like Saudi Arabia and Russia to acknowledge the conclusions and analysis of a report from the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.</a>

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2030-limit-climate-change-warming/">report in question</a> was released earlier this year and offered some sobering realities about climate change and what the future would look like if global temperatures were not limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius. 

When the United States announced its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, it opened the door to other dissenting nations who want to prioritize fossil fuels to stall future climate agreements. 

The US even promoted fossil fuels during the conference, and several countries like Australia welcomed this stance with claims that it helped balance out the conference and provided some much needed “realism.”

However, the true reality is that emissions, temperatures, and sea levels are rising and if left unabated, will result in disastrous consequences for the future of food security, coastal nations, and public health. 

“Carbon emissions keep rising and rising,” Mohamed Nasheed, former president of the Maldives, told reporters before the deal was finalized. “All we seem to be doing is talking and talking and talking.”

This is not to say that progress wasn’t made at this year’s climate conference, but there are concerns that any steps made were just not big enough to keep up with the fast pace of climate change.

Global climate conference ends with small steps toward progress

Both Antarctica and the Arctic are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/east-antarctic-ice-sheet-melting/">losing ice quicker</a> than they are gaining it, and much of the melting happening in the poles due to climate change is driving sea level rise. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center</a> recently discovered that snowfall in the Antarctic has helped buffer sea level rise in the past, but it’s not a reliable trend we can count on for the future. 

The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, shows that although Antarctica gained some of its ice mass back from increased levels of snowfall during the 20th century, it only makes up for about a third of current ice loss on the continent. 

“Our findings don't mean that Antarctica is growing; it's still losing mass, even with the extra snowfall,” said Brooke Medley, a glaciologist and lead author of the study. “What it means, however, is that without these gains, we would have experienced even more sea level rise in the 20th century.”

Measuring snowfall in Antarctica is no easy feat, and only a few weather stations have been built there. Satellites are even less helpful because they can’t differentiate recent snowfall with snow that’s already on the ground. 

To get a clearer picture of snowfall through the years, researchers turn to ice cores. However, drilling for these cores along Antarctica’s ice sheet is also challenging because of the harsh conditions and the sheer size of the continent. 

“Antarctica is bigger than the contiguous United States,” said Medley. “You wouldn't say that because you're in New York City and it's snowing, it must mean that it's also snowing in San Diego. It's the same with Antarctica; you can't just stand in one spot, take one measurement and say ‘okay, I think I have a good handle on all of Antarctica.’ It requires a lot of measurements.” 

For this study, the researchers reviewed data from 52 ice cores collected all over Antarctica and three atmospheric reanalysis climate models. 

The team compared the ice core snowfall records with the climate models to create an accurate reconstruction of snowfall in Antarctica from 1801 to 2000. 

Over the course of the 20th century, the researchers noticed an increase in snowfall by .04 inches per decade and after 1979, this rate increased even more. 

The increased snowfall was due to climate change, specifically increases in atmospheric temperature which allowed more moisture to be stored in the atmosphere. 

Although the results show that increased snowfall has buffered sea level rise, it won’t be that way for long as the rates of ice loss continue to grow due to climate change. 

“The increased snowfall is a symptom of the same changes in atmospheric circulation that are causing the melt of Antarctic ice,” said Medley. “Currently it is helping mitigate ice losses, but it's not entirely compensating for them. We expect snowfall will continue to increase into the 21st century and beyond, but our results show that future increases in snowfall cannot keep pace with oceanic-driven ice losses in Antarctica.”

Critically endangered hawksbill turtles could be the next animal to see their existence threatened by climate change, according to a new report.

They’re not the only <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-sea-turtles/">turtle species at risk</a> as global air temperatures rise, but they do face a few unique challenges, according to <a href="https://www.fsu.edu/">Florida State University</a> researchers.

Along with warmer air temperatures, increased rain and solar radiation could have a significant effect on hatching success at the beaches where hawksbill turtles make their nests.

"Marine turtles have been around for millions of years, and during this time they have adapted to substantial climatic changes," co-author Dr. Mariana Fuentes said in a press release. "In the past they have adapted by shifting their nesting grounds and nesting season to align with more favorable conditions. However, increasing impacts to nesting habitats from coastal construction, storms and sea level rise are jeopardizing their ability to adapt."

The research team from FSU’s <a href="https://www.eoas.fsu.edu/">Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science</a> analyzed more than 5,000 nesting sites on five beaches in Brazil. Those are the sites where the majority of the hawksbill turtles prefer to nest.

The scientists looked at five factors – rainfall, air temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation – to create a model that will show possible effects of climate change on the hawksbill turtles.

"Research is lacking on how climate change may influence hawksbills, and this population in particular," said Natalie Montero, the former FSU graduate student who led the study. "We chose to study how climate change may impact hatchling production because significant changes to how many baby marine turtles are born can dramatically alter population stability."

The researchers found that between rising air temperatures and rainfall, hawksbill turtles could see an 11 percent drop in hatching success by 2100. The warmth could cause sand temperatures to rise enough to damage the eggs, and rainfall could suffocate the embryos, they said. Additionally, both could cause nests to cave in, they said.

"Humans can help marine turtles in many ways," Montero said. "Reducing coastal construction and protecting more coastal habitat will help ensure present and future nesting habitat is available. Reducing human impacts on dune structure and beach vegetation is also important. Additionally, reducing trash and microplastics on the beach can create a higher quality nesting and incubating environment."

Carbon emissions aren’t the only pollutants from city traffic contributing to air pollution and climate change.

A new study has confirmed that soot from road traffic in emerging countries travels to high altitudes, spreads over long distances, and contributes to rising global temperatures. 

The study was conducted by an international team of researchers led by the <a href="https://www.tropos.de/en/">Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS)</a>, who observed soot levels from traffic emissions in the cities of La Paz, El Alto and the Chacaltaya mountain observatory in Bolivia. 

The results, published in the journal Atmospheric Environment, show that reducing emissions from diesel engines, a major source of traffic soot, should take priority to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-human-placentas/">reduce pollution</a>, mitigate climate change, and reduce health risks. 

While the EU and even some states in the US have <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/dec/13/eu-relaxation-of-diesel-emission-limits-was-illegal-court-rules">limits or taxes on diesel emissions</a> and fuel, for emerging countries where vehicle pollution is high, it’s a different story. 

Soot, in particular, is extremely problematic because soot particles contain heavy metals and toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Soot particles also absorb solar radiation which is how diesel emissions can contribute to climate change.

However, it is still not well known just how much soot particles contribute to global warming or even how much soot ends up in the atmosphere. This is why the TROPOS researchers decided to examine soot particles from traffic in Bolivia to gain a better understanding of these processes. 

The Chacaltaya mountain observatory itself is important for atmospheric research because of its prime location near some of the fastest growing cities in South America. 

For the study, the researchers measured both equivalent black carbon concentrations and particle number size distributions of soot particles at two locations in La Paz and El Alto from September to November in 2012. 

The researchers discovered that soot from road traffic does travel vertically and spreads out over large distances. 

“The measurements clearly show how soot from the city valley emerges with the warmed air up to the El Alto plateau and then partly up to the peaks of the Andes,” said Alfred Wiedensohler, the lead author of the study.

The team was able to see first hand just how much traffic contributes to soot pollution as their studies coincided with a population census in November when, for a day, all traffic was banned except for emergency response vehicles. 

“The result was impressive: the soot load on the road was reduced from around 20 to less than one microgram per cubic meter,” said Wiedensohler. “This corresponds roughly to the reduction from 100 to about five percent. There is no clearer way of demonstrating the contribution of soot pollution from road traffic.”

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.



As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.

Scientists have made a startling discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn's moon Mimas</a>. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. By studying subtle irregularities in Mimas's orbit around Saturn, researchers detected the gravitational signature of liquid water hidden 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the moon's icy shell.

At only 400 kilometers in diameter, Mimas seemed like the least likely candidate to harbor a subsurface ocean. "Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.

Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.

Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
