Climate targets set by nations under the Paris Agreement outline voluntary commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These targets, known as Percentage Reduction Pledges (PRPs), reflect the commitments of individual countries to combating climate change. 



However, this does not necessarily reflect the willingness of citizens in these countries to contribute financially to climate action.



A recent study from the <a href="https://uol.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oldenburg</a> in Germany examines the question of how closely the PRPs represent citizen buy in, in terms of willingness to contribute financially. The research explores the relationship between national climate targets and the public's willingness to support <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-initiative-led-to-health-benefits-for-800-u-s-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate initiatives</a> financially. 



The findings reveal that, while higher-income countries tend to set more ambitious reduction goals, their populations are often less willing to contribute personally.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-targets-and-public-willingness">Climate targets and public willingness</h2>



The experts analyzed climate pledges from 123 countries, and used data from nearly 130,000 individuals surveyed in 125 nations as part of the Global Climate Change Survey.



The findings highlight that, while 89% of respondents believe their governments should take stronger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/conservatives-liberals-unite-climate-action-despite-different-beliefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate action</a>, only 69% expressed willingness to allocate 1% of their income toward climate mitigation.



The analysis uncovered key economic and environmental factors that influence both national pledges and individual contributions. Higher per-capita income and emissions correlated with more ambitious governmental targets. However, the same factors negatively influenced public willingness to contribute. 



In wealthier, high-emission nations, citizens were less inclined to accept personal financial sacrifices in support of climate initiatives.



Temperature trends further shaped responses. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brutal-effects-of-climate-change-have-already-arrived-in-the-uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Warmer countries</a> demonstrated higher individual willingness to contribute, whereas colder countries adopted stronger national targets. 



The study suggests that residents of colder regions may perceive climate change as a less immediate threat, making them less willing to engage in mitigation efforts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-support-of-climate-policies">Public support of climate policies </h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-flood-disaster-in-germany-raises-new-questions-about-extreme-precipitation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Germany</a> exemplifies this trend. It ranks among the top nations in climate pledges, committing to a 39.7% emissions reduction between 2019 and 2030. This places it 12th out of 123 countries in terms of its PRP.



Yet, despite its ambitious government targets, public willingness to contribute financially remains lower than in many other countries. Germany ranks 74th in this category, with 67.9% of its citizens agreeing to allocate a portion of their income toward climate action. 



Meanwhile, only 86% of German respondents supported stronger governmental climate policies, ranking the country 89th globally.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ethical-and-political-dilemma">The ethical and political dilemma</h2>



The study interprets these findings as a reflection of a broader tension between climate policy and public perception. 



The United Nations’ principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" emphasizes equity in climate action. However, individuals often prioritize economic considerations over ethical responsibility.



"People assume that the lower the temperatures in a country are, the less impact climate change will have there," explained Dr. Heinz Welsch, an environmental economist at the University of Oldenburg.



Additionally, individuals in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/industrialized-countries-owe-roughly-170-trillion-for-co2-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-emission nations</a> worry about economic setbacks caused by strict climate regulations. 



"Cost-benefit calculations, therefore, make it likely that in colder, richer and more carbon-intensive countries there will be less willingness to contribute to climate protection," said Dr. Welsch.



Another layer to this issue is democratic satisfaction. The research highlights a notable pattern: when a government's climate targets exceed public willingness to contribute, citizens report lower satisfaction with democracy.



While the study does not establish causation, it suggests that climate policies requiring public sacrifices without broad support could create political challenges.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solutions-for-bridging-the-gap">Solutions for bridging the gap</h2>



To bridge this gap, the report recommends policy strategies that minimize the economic cost of climate action for citizens. One such strategy can be a climate fund that recycles revenue from carbon taxes and uses it to benefit poorer citizens. 



These structures can make effective climate policies that are ambitious and also acceptable to people, so action is not undertaken at the risk of political destabilization.



The study underlines the complexity of climate policy. While governments might make firm commitments, public involvement is still necessary for significant progress.



To develop effective, long-lasting climate policies, understanding the determinants of both policy and individual willingness is vital.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgency-of-achieving-climate-targets">Urgency of achieving climate targets</h2>



Climate change is not an inevitable fate - it is a challenge that can be mitigated through decisive action.



Meeting climate targets is crucial to slowing global warming, reducing extreme weather events, and protecting ecosystems for future generations. 



Every degree of warming prevented means fewer droughts, wildfires and damaging storms, and less increase in sea level.



The window for meaningful action is closing, but success remains within reach if nations commit to real, enforceable solutions. The future depends on turning promises into progress before it’s too late.

An area on the seafloor of the Japanese coast where two tectonic plates meet is the subject of study for an international team of researchers interested in the mechanics of earthquakes and tsunamis. This is the location of a subduction zone, where the Pacific Plate slides underneath the Eurasian Plate, and is part of the “ring of fire” that goes around the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/typhoon-songda-moves-in-the-open-pacific-ocean/">Pacific Ocean</a>. 

Researchers are attempting to understand slow-slip earthquakes in these subduction zones, recording data from instruments placed on the seafloor and in boreholes at this location. “This area is the shallowest part of the plate boundary system,” explains Demian Saffer, professor of geosciences at <a href="http://www.psu.edu/">Penn State University</a>. “If this region near the ocean trench slips in an earthquake, it has the potential to generate a large tsunami.”

The focus of the study was slow earthquakes, which occur from slip events that happen over days or weeks. Previous research has found that slow earthquakes play an important part in earthquake occurrence at tectonic plate boundaries, and may be able to show where some of the energy that gets built up in a fault or subduction zone goes.

“These valuable results are important for understanding the risk of a tsunami,” says James Allan, program director in the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/div/index.jsp?div=OCE">National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences</a> “Such tidal waves can affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and result in billions of dollars in damages, as happened in Southeast Asia in 2004.”

The data that was gathered for this study showed that roughly 50 percent of the energy in the shallow subduction zone was released during a slow earthquake. The other 50 percent may be stuck in the permanent shortening of the upper plate, or may be stored for a century or more until another earthquake occurs. The research team believes that a slow slip could reduce the risk of tsunamis through periodically relieving this built up energy – but it is probably more complicated than that.

A series of slow slip events around this plate interface was also shown to occur about every 12 to 18 months, and could be days or weeks long. “The area where these slow earthquakes take place is uncompacted, which is why it has been thought that these shallow areas near the trench act like a shock absorber, stopping deeper earthquakes from reaching the surface,” says Saffer. “Instead we have discovered slow earthquakes of magnitude 5 or 6 in the region that last from days to weeks.”

Because earthquakes that occur away from the subduction zone can sometimes trigger these slow earthquakes, the researchers now know this area is more sensitive than previously thought. 

Much is left to be discovered about the mechanics of these earthquakes and how they may trigger future earthquakes or tsunamis. The data being gathered from the seafloor is imperative if we want to one day figure out how to reduce the damage that these events cause.

Slow earthquakes near Japan provide insight into tsunami generation

Earthquakes are a constant problem in the U.S. state of California, causing significant damage and posing a threat to the wellbeing of the state’s residents. Efforts by scientists to understand the multitude of factors that cause these quakes are ongoing, and have the potential to save lives as well as preserve infrastructure. 

Recently, a new study from the <a href="http://www.berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a> revealed that the winter rain and snow in California actually has a physical effect on the geology responsible for earthquakes. During the winter, rain and snow push down the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gobi-desert-dust-sierra-nevadas/">Sierra Nevada</a> and Coast Ranges. In the summer, these mountains “rebound” by about a centimeter, which affects the stress on earthquake faults and results in a seasonal increase in minor earthquakes.

Furthermore, the weight of ground and stream water depresses the Sierra Nevada mountains by about half a centimeter, causing the same effect. The rising and falling of this land causes the earth’s crust to flex, creating a pushing and pulling action on the natural fault lines.

Researchers were able to measure these tiny rises and falls using the regional global positioning system, and could calculate the stress on the earth due to these water loads. They analyzed 3,600 earthquakes from 2006-2015, correlating each earthquake’s occurrence with the calculated peak stress on the fault from which it occurred. Their data revealed that California’s faults experienced more small earthquakes when these seasonal changes were most significant.

The state’s largest fault – the San Andreas fault – experienced an increase in small earthquakes (those less than magnitude 2) in late summer and early fall, when the water load has diminished the most on the mountains. However, it’s unlikely residents would have noticed, as most people can’t feel quakes below a magnitude 2.5.

“It’s not that all earthquakes happen in September. There is no earthquake season,” clarifies Roland Bürgmann, senior author of the paper and <a href="http://www.berkeley.edu/">UC Berkeley</a> professor of earth and planetary science. “It all depends on details of the loading, the location of the fault and the geometry of the fault.”

The researchers stress that the impact of these water-related factors are tiny –increasing the chance of earthquakes by no more than a few percentage points. Previous studies have shown that massive earthquakes – known as megaquakes – can trigger other large quakes from thousands of miles away due to seismic waves. The data presented in this study indicates a similar amount of stress is caused by the seasonal water loading in California. 

“We don’t see an increase in large-magnitude earthquakes from these low-amplitude stresses caused by seasonal water storage,” says Johnson. “What these results are showing, however, is that we do see a correlation with small earthquakes from low-amplitude stresses.”

Overall, this study can provide seismologists with much needed information on how faults rupture and what factors lead to an earthquake occurring. These findings won’t be used as indicators for times when large earthquakes should be expected; rather, they will better serve scientists’ understanding of the mechanics of earthquakes.

Some California earthquakes caused by seasonal rain and snowfall

Warm winds from an especially strong El Nino have caused an area of west Antarctica more than twice the size of California to partially melt, according to a new study.

The warm spell persisted for more than two weeks in January 2016, according to the study published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>. 

Satellite data revealed a mix of melted snow and <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/thinning-ice-sheets-greenland/">ice</a> over most of the Ross Ice Shelf, a thick platform of floating ice that channels about a third of the ice flowing from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet into the ocean, the study said.

Researchers have been gathering evidence for years that warm ocean water is melting west Antarctic ice shelves from beneath, but this is one of the first times they've been able to document how warm air could also cause widespread melting from above.

A few weeks before the warm spell, researchers had installed the necessary instruments to investigate these processes in West Antarctica as part of a study to better understand how clouds affect the amount of energy that reaches the snow surface and influence its temperature.

"We were extraordinarily fortunate to be able to deploy state-of-the art equipment to West Antarctica just before this large melt event occurred," said study coauthor Dan Lubin, principal investigator of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_Radiation_Measurement_Climate_Research_Facility">Atmospheric Radiation Measurement </a>(ARM) <a href="https://www.arm.gov/publications/programdocs/doe-sc-arm-15-040.pdf">West Antarctic Radiation Experiment</a> (AWARE). Lubin is a research physicist at the <a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/">Scripps Institution of Oceanography</a>. 

When Julien Nicolas, lead author of the paper, got a January 2016 alert from the AWARE expedition that the weather at their campsite atop of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet had turned unseasonably warm, he checked to see in the satellite data what was happening to the rest of west Antarctica.

The presence of water in the snow is often hard to detect from visible satellite imagery, especially if clouds block the view. Instead, Nicolas analyzed satellite measurements of the microwave radiation emitted by the snowpack, since dry and wet snows have very different microwave signatures.

What he saw during the melting event was an area of roughly 300,000 square miles, including most of the Ross Ice Shelf, that likely contained a mix of snow and water.

"What probably happened is that the surface snowpack was able to contain the meltwater, acting as a buffer and preventing the formation of melt ponds and streams that can be common on some Antarctic ice shelves," said Nicolas, research associate at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">The Ohio State University</a>’s <a href="https://bpcrc.osu.edu/">Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center</a>. "But we cannot rule out the presence of standing water in many locations."

The melting was particularly interesting to scientists because it took place during one of the strongest El Nino events on record.

"This conjunction of events was no coincidence," Nicholas said.  "It's a pattern that is emerging. And because we expect stronger, more frequent El Ninos in the future with a warming climate, we can expect more major surface melt events in West Antarctica."

More frequent melting would accelerate the general deterioration of the ice sheet, he said.

Life in and around the Amazon River could be harmed significantly by hundreds of hydroelectric dams that have been constructed or are planned, according to a new study.

Economic developers in South America have proposed 428 hydroelectric dams, with 140 currently built or under construction, in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-examines-how-indigenous-people-alter-the-amazon-rainforest-3/">Amazon</a> basin. The areas is the largest and most complex network of river channels in the world that sustains the highest biodiversity on Earth, the study said.

The rivers and surrounding forests are the source of 20 percent of the planet's fresh water and valuable ingredients used in modern medicine.

While the hydroelectric dams have been justified as providing renewable energy and avoiding carbon emissions, little attention has been paid to the major disturbances dams present to the Amazon floodplains, rainforests, the northeast coast of South America and the regional climate, according to the researchers.

Rivers in the Amazon basin move like a dance, exchanging sediments across continental distances to deliver nutrients to "a mosaic of wetlands," said Edgardo Latrubesse, a  professor at the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas Austin</a> and lead author of the study.

Sediment transported by rivers provides nutrients that sustain wildlife, contribute to the regional food supplies, and modulate river dynamics that result in high habitat and biotic diversity for both aquatic and nonaquatic organisms, he said.

"People say 'oh another dam, another river.' It's not. It's the Amazon," said Latrubesse. “We have to put the risks on the table and change the way people are looking at the problem. We are massively destroying our natural resources, and time urges us to find some rational alternatives for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/game-changing-invention-converts-both-co2-and-plastic-waste-into-renewable-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">preservation and sustainable development</a>."

The study introduces the Dam Environmental Vulnerability Index (DEVI), developed to determine the current and potential impacts of dams on rivers and their ecosystems in the Amazon basin. DEVI values quantify on a scale of 0 to 100 an area's vulnerability to potential land use change, erosion, runoff pollution, trapped sediment and overall changes to river systems due to dams.

"To not have an integrated approach is to deny how nature works in the Amazon basin," said Victor Baker, <a href="http://www.arizona.edu/">University of Arizona</a> Regents' Professor of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences and co-author of the study. “Our role is to show how nature works and that nature is integrated."

Researchers found that many of the existing dams are located in areas of high sediment yield, such as the Andean Cordillera, which provides more than 90 percent of the detrital sediment to the entire system.

Other large rivers in the central highlands of Brazil are also being impacted, the study said.

Investigation of the Tapajós River -- where the main riverstem has not yet been directly disrupted, but 28 dams were recently constructed in its major tributaries -- showed that the river and all its major tributaries will be impounded if developers move forward with 90 proposed dams and deforestation continues at its current rate.

"Think about putting dams in the Mississippi connecting artificial lakes from Memphis to New Orleans," Latrubesse said. "It would be a scandal because it wouldn't be sustainable. But this is what is proposed for the Tapajós River."

Baker stressed that the Amazon is "the most important river basin on the planet. It's a microcosm of our issues of today involving environment, energy and health of the planet."

Summer wildfires produce more air pollution more than previously believed, according to a new study.

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preparing-new-era-wildfires/">fires</a> release fine, microscopic particles at three times the levels recorded by the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency</a>, according to the study led by the <a href="http://www.gatech.edu/">Georgia Institute of Technology</a>. The specks form aerosols that are hazardous to human health, particularly to the lungs and heart, the study said.

"These are really bad aerosols to breathe from a health point of view," said Georgia Tech researcher Greg Huey.

The research also describes other chemicals in wildfire smoke, some never before measured, and significantly raises the estimated annual emission of particulate matter in the western United States.

Previous EPA data had been based on plume samples taken in controlled burns ignited by forestry professionals. The new study measured plumes from the sky, directly in the thick of  wildfires.

Researchers deployed planes to plow through the plumes of three major wildfires, including the 2013 Rim Fire, the third-largest wildfire in California history. An ensemble of instruments bristling from the flanks of NASA and U.S. Department of Energy aircraft allowed teams of researchers on board to measure chemicals and particles in real time and cull masses of data, upon which the new study is based.

"We actually went to measure, right above the fire, what was coming out," said Huey, a professor in Georgia Tech's School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, which he also chairs.

Georgia Tech had instruments and scientists on the NASA DC-8 plane. Researchers associated with a total of more than a dozen universities and organizations participated in data collection or analysis. The study was published in the <a href="http://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/jgr/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)2169-8996/">Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres</a>.

"This paper is expected to serve as a basis for the next NASA fire chemical monitoring mission," Huey said.

Wildfire plumes produce methanol, benzene, ozone precursors and other noxious emissions,  which may sound like an oil refinery went up in flames. That's not so far-fetched, as oil and other fossil fuels derive from ancient biomass, the researchers said.

"You can see the smoke, and it's dark for a reason," Huey said. "When you go measuring wildfires, you get everything there is to measure. You start to wonder sometimes what all is in there."

Humans are exposed to harmful aerosols from industrial sources as well, too, but fires produce more aerosol per amount of fuel burned. 

"Cars and power plants with pollution controls burn things much more cleanly," Huey added.

Various aerosols also rise up in the atmosphere, but their net effect on global warming or cooling is still uncertain, as some aerosols reflect sunlight away from Earth, and others trap warmth in the atmosphere, the researchers said.

As global warming expands wildfires in size and number, the ensuing pollution stands to grow along with them, the study said. Stepping up professional human-initiated burnings may help cut these emissions.

So-called prescribed burnings prevent or reduce wildfires, and they appear to produce far less pollution per unit area than wildfires, according to the study.

This marked the third consecutive year that the planet's average surface temperatures hit a new high. In 2016, the average temperatures across the globe were 1.78 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average temperatures of the mid-20th century. Rising temperatures in the United States are made worse in urban areas by what are known as heat islands. A city with over 1 million people can experience daytime <a href="https://www.epa.gov/heat-islands/heat-island-impacts#energy">temperatures</a> up to 5.4 degrees higher than neighboring towns. The evening hours may see temperatures as much as 22 degrees hotter than rural areas. 

Heat islands exist both on the surface and in the atmosphere. Heat islands occur when large populations pump out energy constantly, but the main cause is the modification of a city's landscape. Roads and buildings that have replaced plants and trees are absorbing heat that would be otherwise reflected by vegetation. The <a href="https://www.epa.gov/heat-islands/heat-island-impacts">temperature of city roofs and pavement</a> can shoot up 50 to 90 degrees hotter than the air, especially in the summertime. 

The impacts of the heat island effect can be severe. Heat-related illness and global warming are both exacerbated by heat islands. More energy is consumed and more greenhouse gases are emitted. Air and water quality are worsened.  

So what can be done to cool off these cities and improve the quality of life for urban populations?

The Environmental Protection Agency released a book in 2008 called <a href="https://www.epa.gov/heat-islands/heat-island-compendium">Reducing Urban Heat Islands: Compendium of Strategies</a>. The book describes the heat island effect phenomenon and offers heat reduction strategies for both individuals and communities. Suggestions include <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-guide-saving-planet/">planting trees</a> and rooftop gardens and using energy-efficient appliances.

The book was released as part of the EPA’s <a href="https://www.epa.gov/heat-islands/what-epa-doing-reduce-heat-islands">Heat Island Reduction Program,</a> or HIRP. This program includes community outreach tools and guides for people to start their own heat island projects. <a href="https://www.epa.gov/heat-islands/heat-island-webcasts">Webcasts</a> are also held for scientists, practitioners, industry representatives, and government officials from all over the country to discuss the work they have been doing to address heat islands. 

A team of economists from cities across the globe recently conducted <a href="https://www.google.com/amp/s/phys.org/news/2017-05-island-effect-climate-world-cities.amp">an unprecedented study</a> to evaluate the impact of the heat islands on climate change. The study, published last month in the journal Nature Climate Change, revealed that the economic cost of climate change will be approximately 2.6 times higher in urban areas due to heat island effects. 

Richard S.J. Tol, an Economics professor at the University of Sussex, is one of the authors of the study.

“Any hard-won victories over climate change on a global scale could be wiped out by the effects of uncontrolled urban heat islands,” said Professor Tol. We show that city-level adaptation strategies to limit local warming have important economic net benefits for almost all cities around the world.”

While cities only account for a very small area of the Earth's surface, over one half of the world’s population lives in urban communities. <a href="https://unhabitat.org/urban-themes/energy/">City populations</a> consume 75 percent of the globe’s energy and emit 50 to 60 percent of the total greenhouse gases.

“It is clear that we have until now underestimated the dramatic impact that local policies could make in reducing urban warming,” explained Professor Tol.

“However, this doesn't have to be an either/or scenario. In fact, the largest benefits for reducing the impacts of climate change are attained when both global and local measures are implemented together.”

How reducing heat islands could slow climate change

A new study in ACS’ journal <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/journal/esthag">Environmental Science &amp; Technology</a> of hair samples of southern Beaufort Sea polar bears has shown a significant drop in mercury in recent years.

“Great!” you’re probably thinking, “because mercury is bad, right?” Well technically yes, but researchers think this may actually be a worrying trend. Melissa McKinney and her colleagues think this decrease in mercury levels may be an indication of how climate change has affected their foraging habits, which in turn has affected their diets and body mass.

Previously, other research has found that mercury in the environment – which may be either naturally occurring or come from industrial activities such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kentucky-coal-mining-museum-solar/">coal</a> burning – accumulates in the hair and tissue of the southern Beaufort Sea polar bear. These mercury levels have been found to be at concentrations known to cause harmful effects.

Polar bears are also exposed to mercury through their diets, which mostly consist of seals and whales. However, other research has shown that with the decline of seasonal sea ice, polar bears’ diets have changed. In their study, McKinney and colleagues investigated how this shift might affect polar bears’ mercury levels.

The scientists collected hair samples from these polar bears between 2004 and 2011, analyzing the samples for mercury. Their data revealed a decline in mercury levels among adults of about 13 percent per year.

Through analysis of the bears’ body mass and food sources, they reasoned that the drop in mercury was likely due to the change in the polar bears’ diet and their increasing BMI. Specifically, they believe the polar bears are eating more bowhead whales and bearded seals, which contain less mercury than the ringed seals that the bears used to prey upon more often.

As we attempt to understand the countless impacts of climate change, it’s important that we track our world’s flora and fauna on a micro level as well as a macro level. Changes as significant as enormous loss of sea ice can have effects as tiny as levels of mercury in polar bears.

Researchers have developed a solar paint that generates hydrogen, the cleanest source of energy, by absorbing water vapor and splitting it.

The solar paint contains a newly developed compound that acts like silica gel used to absorb moisture and keep food, medicines, and electronics fresh and dry.

The new material, synthetic molybdenum-sulphide, also acts as a semi-conductor and catalyses the splitting of water atoms into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/use-photosynthesis-create-hydrogen-fuel/">hydrogen</a> and oxygen.

"We found that mixing the compound with titanium oxide particles leads to a sunlight-absorbing paint that produces hydrogen fuel from solar energy and moist air,” said lead researcher Torben Daeneke, from <a href="https://www.rmit.edu.au/">RMIT University</a> in Melbourne, Australia. 

Titanium oxide is the white pigment already commonly used in wall paint, meaning that the simple addition of the new material can convert a brick wall into energy, harvesting fuel production real estate.

"Our new development has a big range of advantages," said Daeneke. "There's no need for clean or filtered water to feed the system. Any place that has water vapor in the air, even remote areas far from water, can produce fuel."

Hydrogen can be used in fuel cells as well as conventional combustion engines as an alternative to fossil fuels, said Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh, also of RMIT University.

"This system can also be used in very dry but hot climates near oceans,” he said. “The sea water is evaporated by the hot sunlight and the vapour can then be absorbed to produce fuel.”

At least 14 people have died and officials have closed portions of rivers throughout the western United States as warm weather is melting the deepest mountain snowpack in recent memory.

Record snowfall on towering western peaks this winter virtually eliminated California's five-year drought and it is now melting rapidly.

In Utah and Wyoming, some rivers gorged by heavy winter snowfall have overflowed their banks. Rivers in Utah are expected to remain dangerously swollen with icy mountain runoff for several more weeks.

This year's velocity and force of the Merced River that runs through Yosemite Valley is similar to a runaway freight train, said Moose Mutlow of the Yosemite Swift Water Rescue Team.

"You step out in front of it, it's going to take you," he said. "You're not going to stop that, and that's what people need to get their heads around."

So far this year, one 50-year-old man is believed to have drowned at Yosemite after falling into the Merced River from a winding trail. His body has not been found.

One of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forest-fires-habitats-spotted-owls/">Yosemite's</a> deadliest days was in 2011, when three young church group visitors were swept to their deaths over the 317-foot Vernal Fall.

Elsewhere in California, there have been at least 11 drownings since the snowpack started melting in May, authorities said.

At the San Joaquin River near Fresno, 18-year-old Neng Thao drowned last month swimming in the river during a picnic with his family days before he was set to graduate as the valedictorian of his high school.

And six people have died in the rugged Tule River south of Yosemite. Some drowned, but others suffered injuries suggesting their bodies were beaten to death by the river water slamming them against the riverbed.

"The force of that water pounds people into rocks and sends them over waterfalls," said Eric LaPrice, a <a href="https://www.fs.fed.us/">U.S. Forest Service</a> district ranger at the Giant Sequoia National Monument in central California.

At the Kern River in central California, officials last month updated a sign warning that that 280 people have died in it since 1968. The sign is already outdated, with four more drownings since then.

And in northern Utah, a 4-year-old girl playing at the side of the Provo River fell from a boulder into the water last month. Her mother and a man who was nearby jumped in to try to save the girl. All three drowned, illustrating how quickly one tragedy can multiply.

"As little as six inches of water can actually sweep an adult away at the rate of speed that the water is traveling," said Chris Crowley, emergency manager for the county where Park City is located.

Researchers at a lab in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, have managed to examine the entire genome structure of corn. The scientists discovered that corn has a level of adaptability that allows it to be more widely produced, and climate change will not slow it down.

The researchers set out to determine the potential resilience of corn plants in different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tree-leaf-abundance-climate-change/">climates</a>. Previous studies of the maize genome relied on “short-read” technology that was unable to accurately decode repetitive sequences - located in the spaces between genes - which contained crucial information. 

Known as “intergenic regions,” the areas between genes contain information on how genes are regulated. Advanced technology called long-read sequencing gave the scientists a detailed view of these regions, which allowed the team to assemble the entire structure of the maize genome.

Doreen Ware, a researcher for <a href="http://www.cshl.edu/">Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory</a> and the US Department of Agriculture, led the study.

"Our new genome for maize shows how incredibly flexible this plant is, a characteristic that directly follows from the way its genome is organized," said Ware.

The team needed to look at genome-wide patterns of structural variation to determine the extent of corn’s genetic diversity. The scientists constructed a highly-detailed genome of a maize line known as B73, and compared it to maps of two other lines of maize grown in different climates. 

"Maize individuals are much, much less alike at the level of the genome than people are, for one thing," explained Ware. "But we've found that two maize individuals - from the W22 and Ki11 lines - each align with our new reference genome for B73 maize only 35%, on average. Their genome organization is incredibly different!"

Yinping Jiao is a postdoctoral researcher and first author of the study. Jiao said that the structural variations found in the maize individuals showed "not only changes in the sequence of the genes themselves, but also where and when genes are expressed, and at what levels.”

The findings of this study, published today in the journal Nature, give insight into the successful history of maize which spans thousands of years. The report also builds a positive perspective on the future of maize production.

“It means we have a very large variation in the regulatory component of most of the plant's genes. They have lots of adaptability beyond what we see them doing now. That has huge implications for growing maize as the population increases and climate undergoes major change in the period immediately ahead of us."

Tropical peatlands, which help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, are threatened by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-india-deadly-heat/">climate change</a> that alters rainfall patterns. This effect could potentially destroy even forested peatlands that remain undrained, a new study found.

These former carbon “sinks,” which have taken greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere, are now net carbon sources that are actually accelerating global warming, the <a href="http://web.mit.edu/">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> study said.

"There is a tremendous amount of peatland in Southeast Asia, but almost all of it has been deforested," said MIT Professor Charles Harvey, one of the study authors.

Once deforested and drained, the peatland dries out, and the organic (carbon-containing) soil oxidizes and returns to the atmosphere. Sometimes the exposed peat can actually catch fire and burn for extended periods, causing massive clouds of air pollution.

Tropical peatlands may contain as much carbon as the amount consumed in nearly a decade of global fossil fuel use. Raging peat fires in Indonesia alone have been estimated in some years to contribute 10 to 40 percent as much greenhouse gas to the atmosphere as all the world's fossil fuel burning, the researchers said. 

Tropical peatlands, unlike those in temperate zones that are dominated by sphagnum moss, are forested with trees that can tower to 150 feet. Peat fires can sometimes ignite forest fires that consume these as well. Peat that gets buried and compressed underground is the material that ultimately turns to coal.

Harvey and his team found one of the last undisturbed tropical peat forests, in the nation of Brunei on the island of Borneo. 

"We found this site that still has peat growing," Harvey said. That is partly because that petroleum-rich nation has been able to resist the economic draw of the palm-oil market.

"It is remarkable how much the peat forests are just gone everywhere else," Harvey added.

By studying this undisturbed tract, researchers were able to see how peatlands function under normal conditions, which provides a baseline for better understanding as the lands change.

 "If we could understand how these peat forests actually accumulate peat, maybe we could preserve some of them or regenerate peat forest on damaged land," Harvey said.

When peatland forests are cut down and drained, the water table in the area drops. But most of these peatlands are pretty close to sea level, Harvey said.

By midcentury, that land may be lost due to sea-level rise. Encroachment of saltwater into peatland that had formerly been saturated with freshwater could kill off trees and other vegetation. 

Changes in rainfall patterns that may occur as a result of climate change -- with rainfall more concentrated in rainy and dry seasons rather than evenly distributed -- could kill off many of the trees that dominate these lands, the study said.

The research is published the journal <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Science</a>.

Enhanced-efficiency fertilizer lowered nitrous oxide emissions in corn farming by 53 percent and did not lower crop yields, a new study found.

In the study, researchers measured nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-oceans-freezing/">methane</a> emissions from a dairy forage rotation (silage corn-barley-alfalfa) farm in south-central Idaho.

Agricultural production in the western U.S. is an important part of the global food supply, the study said. However, concerns over impacts from agricultural greenhouse gases on the global climate have prompted a need to understand the effect of nitrogen on emissions from cropping systems in semiarid environments, the authors added.

The study compared emissions with nitrogen sources including including granular urea, an enhanced-efficiency fertilizer (SuperU), dairy manure, or composted dairy manure. 

The result showed a big drop in emissions for corn production when SuperU was used instead of granular urea. However, with barley, cumulative N2O emissions were the same as those from granular urea.  

Carbon dioxide emissions were greatest from the manure treatment during the first two years, while there was no difference in methane emissions among the various nitrogen treatments.

“This work demonstrates that SuperU can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from irrigated cropping systems, but the results suggest that there is a crop-dependent effect,” the authors said.

The study is currently being replicated for confirmation.

They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

NASA monitors giant dust storms on Mars

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="http://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.



Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

"Earth’s oceans are huge heat stores, soaking up 93% of the excess heat from human activity over the past 70 years. Ocean currents redistribute heat around the planet, from the Equator to the poles. Where this ocean heat goes influences weather patterns and regional climate," explains ESA.



"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.

These observations have many applications, such as ship routing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modem-ocean-is-a-tough-place-for-whales-to-survive/">ocean</a> current forecasting, and debris tracking.



"A project supported by the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities recently investigated a new technique to measure sea surface topography very precisely," reports ESA.



"The technique involves looking at satellite navigation (GNSS) signals that have been reflected off of the sea surface at very low angles. At these so-called grazing angles, waves and surface roughness have very little impact on the reflection process; the sea surface acts as a very smooth mirror."



Estel Cardellach is the principal investigator at the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia, who first submitted the idea for the project.



“In a mirror-like reflection the phase of the signal can be tracked – it is continuous," said Cardellach. "Different surface heights result in different phase measurements. It gives a very precise measurement of the surface altitude at a few centimetres’ precision.”



The researchers developed a GNSS receiver and set up an experiment in the Balaeric Islands to collect signals from the receiver that were reflected off the sea surface. Ultimately, these signals will provide improved measurements of the shape of the sea surface.
