Italy’s Campi Flegrei has been restless again when it comes to earthquakes, and a new AI approach is helping scientists see what the ground is really doing. 



In a peer-reviewed study, researchers from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>, along with colleagues at INGV Osservatorio Vesuviano and the <a href="https://www.international.unina.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Naples Federico II</a>, reanalyzed continuous seismic records. The team found more than four times as many small earthquakes between January 21, 2022, and March 20, 2025.



The researchers did not detect any direct sign of magma moving upward. Instead, they highlighted very shallow hybrid quakes tied to the hydrothermal system.



That fuller picture matters because small events reveal where the crust is stressed and how energy is moving through the volcanic field. With cleaner detections and sharper locations, scientists can track changes faster and judge when activity starts to cluster in risky ways.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clear-signals-urgent-stakes">Clear signals, urgent stakes</h2>



“Seismicity could change at any time, and that may be the most important thing about this study: this capability of getting a clear view is now operational,” said study co-author Greg Beroza, a geophysics professor at Stanford University.



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supervolcano-campi-flegrei-naples-italy-solfatara-crater-phlegraean-fields-signs-of-waking-up/">caldera</a> sits within the Neapolitan area, where more than half a million people live and work. That density means even modest shaking or ground movement can disrupt daily life, strain buildings, and complicate evacuations.



History shows why clarity is essential. During the 1982-1984 crisis, uplift and persistent earthquakes damaged structures across Pozzuoli. A major analysis documented that the events triggered the evacuation of about 40,000 people.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-turns-noise-into-earthquake-signals">AI turns noise into earthquake signals</h2>



The team trained a machine learning workflow on continuous waveforms and used it to scan years of data consistently. That created one catalog rather than a patchwork of methods, so patterns stand out instead of becoming blurred.



AI did more than count earthquakes. The workflow sharpened event locations and magnitudes, turning noisy curves into clean signals that line up with mapped features and known hot zones. 



That is the kind of precision emergency managers need when activity jumps in hours, not weeks. One payoff is a much clearer view of the caldera’s thin ring shaped structures and shallow faults. 



Those features organize the small quakes and help separate background rumble from changes that could matter for public safety.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcano-under-quiet-strain">Volcano under quiet strain</h2>



Campi Flegrei is a large caldera, the broad depression left by past eruptions, ringed by faults and dotted with old vents and fuming ground. It is not a single cone, it is a field where different parts can wake up at different times.



The region breathes over years through uplift and subsidence known as bradyseism. Those slow vertical motions have been recorded for centuries and often line up with swarms of small earthquakes.



In the new catalog, most activity sits at very shallow depths and traces a narrow ring fault system consistent with surface features and the zone now rising. 



The authors reported no direct signature of magma rising toward the surface in this interval. This lowers near-term eruption concern but does not remove the need for close watching.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-faults-reveal-hidden-stress">Faults reveal hidden stress</h2>



Faults are breaks in rock that slip when stress overcomes strength, and their length and orientation constrain how big an earthquake could be. When small <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquakes-and-flood-zones-hidden-risks-in-the-pacific-northwest/">quakes</a> line up along a longer fault, planners can bound the upper size of plausible events rather than guess in the dark.



Seeing faults crisply also helps compare present unrest with past episodes. Shaking that migrates onto a new segment or clusters at the edge of the ring may signal a change in how the system stores and releases pressure.



Those signals are not predictions by themselves. They are inputs to models that weigh where stress is building, how close rocks are to failure, and what level of shaking the built environment can handle.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-refines-risk-planning">AI refines risk planning</h2>



Near real-time detections let observatories update maps of active zones as conditions evolve. That supports decisions like where to inspect bridges, how to stage ambulances, or when to test public alerts before a busy weekend.



Sharper locations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/">magnitudes</a> also help engineers validate expected shaking levels against what instruments record in town. With that feedback loop, officials can refine microzonation, revisit building priorities, and tune maintenance schedules before the next swarm.



Past experience is a warning here. During 1982-1984, the harbor shallowed and commerce paused, schools closed, and the government approved new housing to relocate residents. 



Planning for unrest is not only about eruptions, it is about everyday disruptions that stack up when the ground keeps moving.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-helps-not-predicts">AI helps, not predicts</h2>



The present results point to pressure within a shallow system, not direct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magma-layer-keeps-the-yellowstone-supervolcano-dormant/">magma</a> rise, during 2022-2025. That aligns with other independent work that has argued for pressure buildup and evolving stress in the crust during long stretches without eruption.



Unrest can still change quickly. More small quakes could organize into tighter clusters, or uplift rates could shift, and those changes would be visible fast with the new tools.



AI does not replace dense earthquake monitoring or local expertise. It helps analysts keep up when data surge, flag subtle changes that a human might miss after a long night, and focus attention on the signals that matter most.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adw9038" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science</a>.

In something that seems ripped right out of an Isaac Asimov story, androids walking around with all your memories and thoughts could continue your legacy long after your physical body dies someday in the future. 

Famed futurist, Dr. Ian Pearson, an inventor, public speaker and writer recently discussed the potential benefits and dangers of “electronic immortality” on his blog, <a href="https://timeguide.wordpress.com/">The More Accurate Guide to the Future</a>. 

According to Pearson, electronic immortality is on the horizon, but unless we tread carefully into the frontier of digitally uploaded personal memory, our minds may be an asset and something we no longer own or control. 

Electronic immortality describes the hypothetical possibility that one-day humanity will develop technology that allows memories and thoughts to be stored like files on your computer uploaded to the cloud. When your physical body fails and dies, you could opt to put your brain in a new Android and go on with your life. 

“Assuming you saved enough and prepared well, you connect to an android to use as your body from now on, attend your funeral, and then carry on as before, still you, just with a younger, highly upgraded body,” Pearson wrote in his blog. 

This hypothetical could be a reality in the just a few decades according to Pearson. 

Although the idea of living on indefinitely in a high-tech android is a tempting prospect, Pearson warns of grave consequences if humanity doesn’t carefully work out the complex nitty-gritty of the fine print.

There is a good chance that if electronic immortality were to be readily available, a tech conglomerate or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fake-news-social-media/">company would be running most of the show</a>.  

“However, your mind runs on IT, and because of the most likely evolution of the technology and its likely deployment rollout, you probably won’t own that IT; it won’t be your own PC or server, it will probably be part of the cloud, maybe owned by AWS, Google, Facebook, Apple or some future equivalent.” Pearson wrote. 

Essentially, your mind would be property and whatever company owned that property could do whatever it wanted with it. You may even find yourself “enslaved” by a company. 

Already, we have seen major <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jul/11/facebook-fined-for-data-breaches-in-cambridge-analytica-scandal">breaches of privacy</a> with major companies taking advantage of and selling user information which does not bode well for a future where our entire minds may be up for grabs.  

“Get it right, and you can live in deluxe cyber-heaven, hopping into the real world as much as you like and living in unimaginable bliss online,” wrote Pearson. “Have too many casual taster sessions, use too much fully integrated mind-sharing social media, sign up to employment arrangements or go on corporate jollies without fully studying the small print and you could stay immortal, unable to die, stuck forever as just a corporate asset, a mere slave.”

Transshipment describes the practice where fishing boats transfer their catch to cargo vessels at sea rather than returning to port. 

In theory, it can be an efficient process for both fishers and cargo shipping. But because transshipment often occurs out of sight on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/high-seas-fishing-is-unprofitable-without-government-subsidies/">high seas</a>, it has aided in the trade of illegally caught fish along with weapons and drug trafficking. 

The unregulated seas where transhipments happen also leaves the door open for human rights abuses because the high seas are out of reach from jurisdiction. 

Two new studies focusing on transshipment have, for the first time, been able to use new advancement in fishing tracking technology to map out where transshipment occurs and what fish are going where. 

One study titled “Global hot spots of transshipment of fish catch at sea” was conducted by researchers from <a href="https://www.dal.ca/">Dalhousie University </a>and published in the journal Science Advances.

“Identifying global patterns of transshipment behavior” was conducted by researchers from <a href="http://globalfishingwatch.org/">Global Fishing Watch</a> and <a href="https://www.skytruth.org/">SkyTruth</a> and was published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science. 

Both studies put the spotlight on transshipment and highlight the problem areas were it occurs the most. 

“Because catches from different boats are mixed up during transshipment, we often have no idea what was caught legally and what wasn't,” said Kristina Boerder, the lead author of the first paper. 

One major problem with tackling the problems of transshipment was that it often happened out of sight and reach on the high seas. Dalhousie researchers rectified this by applying machine learning techniques to vessel tracking data. 

Between 2012 and 2017, researchers observed 501 refrigerated cargo vessels meeting with 1,856 shipping vessels to conduct 10,510 probable transshipment transactions.

“So far, this practice was out of sight out of mind, but now that we can track it using satellites, we can begin to know where our fish truly comes from,” said Boris Worm, a co-author of the Science Advances paper.

For the other study, researchers from SkyTruth and Global Fishing Watch used the same machine learning technology and satellite identification systems developed to map the global fishing footprint from space to track refrigerated cargo vessels. 

The studies found that transshipment is more prevalent in areas off the coast of West Africa, Russia, and in the tropical Pacific. 

The two studies together have compiled the most complete view of transshipment to date. 

“These unprecedented studies serve as examples for how big data experts, NGOs, and academics can come together to address critical, global challenges that were up to now too large, too complicated, or simply too hard to observe,” said Nate Miller, a Data Scientist at SkyTruth and author on both papers.

The research shows that widespread management and regulation of the fishing industry is possible and offer much-needed transparency on fisheries where there previously wasn’t any.

A new survey has found that the majority of Americans agree with gene editing when it has a goal of improving the health of babies. The majority of adult respondents also believed that the use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/public-opinion-gene-editing/">gene editing</a> to increase a baby's intelligence is taking the technology too far.

Out of 2,537 survey respondents, 72 percent agreed that modifying the genetic characteristics of an unborn baby to treat a serious disease is an appropriate application of gene editing. In addition, 60 percent said that the use of this technology would be acceptable to reduce the risk of the development of a serious condition over the course of a baby's lifetime.

However, when asked about using the same technology to make a baby more intelligent, only 19 percent of American adults agreed that it would be appropriate.


When respondents were asked if testing on human embryos would be justifiable for the development of gene editing, two-thirds of the participants did not agree.

Among study participants with strong religious affiliations, beliefs over whether it is appropriate to use gene editing to reduce a baby's risk of disease later in life were nearly divided down the middle. On the other hand, 73 percent of those without strong religious commitment said that it is acceptable to edit genetic characteristics to prevent disease over a baby's lifetime.

Furthermore, 58 percent of respondents agreed that gene editing will most likely lead to increased inequality because it will only be available to the wealthy. Only around 18 percent of adults surveyed said that it is very likely that development of gene editing techniques will pave the way for new medical advances that benefit society as a whole.

The study was funded by the <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/">Pew Research Center</a>.

A new survey has found that the majority of Americans...

An international team of scientists led by <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">Cambridge University</a> has managed to make embryo-like structures using stem cells from mice. The new research could lead to the creation of artificial human embryos to help researchers gain a better understanding of the earliest stages of human fetal development.

The study expands on previous work by the team that developed a much more simple structure using only two stem cells. The current investigation used three <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-kills-brain-stem-cells/">stem cells</a>, which allowed for a critical process known as gastrulation to occur. During this stage, a single layer of cells is transformed into multiple layers of cells that give rise to specific parts of an organism.

“Our artificial embryos underwent the most important event in life in the culture dish,” said study lead author Professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz. “They are now extremely close to real embryos.”


According to Professor Zernicka-Goetz, the interaction between three stem cells will provide the team with better insight into embryo development. Furthermore, altering biological pathways in one cell type will reveal any impacts on the behavior of other cell types.

“The early stages of embryo development are when a large proportion of pregnancies are lost and yet it is a stage that we know very little about,” said Professor Zernicka-Goetz.

“Now we have a way of simulating embryonic development in the culture dish, so it should be possible to understand exactly what is going on during this remarkable period in an embryo's life, and why sometimes this process fails.”


The new research could ultimately shed new light on why embryos fail to implant in the womb, which is one of the leading causes of infertility.\

“Now we have a way of simulating embryonic development in the culture dish,” said Professor Zernicka-Goetz. “So it should be possible to understand exactly what is going on during this remarkable period in an embryo's life, and why sometimes this process fails.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/ncb">Nature Cell Biology</a>.

Artificial embryo structures show insight into fetal development

An international team of scientists led by Cambridge University has...

After decades of debate, it turns out that water may actually exist on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-the-building-blocks-of-life-on-mars/">Mars</a>. Researchers used a radar to probe the planet's ice caps and detected a lake of liquid water beneath the surface.

The discovery was made using the <a href="https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/771614/">Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding</a> (MARSIS) instrument on the Mars Express spacecraft.

According to the scientists, the newly-detected reservoir of water stretches over 20 kilometers in length. 

MARSIS emits radar pulses that penetrate the planet's surface and ice caps. Next, the tool measures how the radio waves are reflected back to the spacecraft. As waves bounce off of the planet's sub-surface features, scientists can gather information about what lies beneath the surface. 

From 2012 to 2015, Roberto Orosei and colleagues used MARSIS to collect 29 sets of radar samples from a region called Planum Australe, which is located in the southern ice cap of Mars. 

The analysis of this data enabled the experts to map out an area which had an extremely sharp discrepancy in its radar signal, measuring around 1.5 kilometers below the surface of the ice and extending sideways about 20 kilometers. 

The profile of this area is similar to radar data of lakes of liquid water found beneath the massive ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland, indicating the existence of a subglacial lake at this particular location on Mars. 

While the temperature of any water found on Mars would be expected to fall below freezing, the researchers pointed out that dissolved salts of magnesium, calcium, and sodium could be dissolved in the water to form a brine. Combined with the pressure of the overlying ice on the planet’s surface, this formula could lower the melting point of the ice below.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Large lake of water detected beneath the surface of Mars

It was recently reported that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge swath of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-plastic-waste-asia-africa/">plastic debris floating in the ocean</a>, now measures almost one full square mile in area. An organization called <a href="https://www.theoceancleanup.com/">The Ocean Cleanup</a> calculated the most recent garbage patch size thanks to a mega aerial expedition surveying the extent of the plastic in the area. 

Now, Ocean Cleanup is working on deploying a huge Pacman-like sweeper designed to collect floating plastic in the Garbage Patch which can then be removed from the ocean and recycled on land. 

The Ocean Cleanup system is a 600-meter plastic floating tube that forms a natural U-shape and sits above the water attached to a tapered three-meter deep skirt. Its design is meant to ensure that plastic can’t slip underneath the tube but also makes sure sealife can pass under unharmed. 

The system will use wind, waves, and currents to maneuver through the Great Garbage Patch and every few months the collected garbage will be hauled away to land. 

“After completing the redesign last summer and passing third-party reviews, this is the design that is currently being constructed and is set to head into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch two months from now,” Ocean Cleanup CEO Boyan Slat told the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5984077/The-giant-pac-man-gobble-plastic-ocean.html">Daily Mail.</a>

Ocean Cleanup claims that the new system could clean up fifty percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch every five years and a fleet of the systems could remove 90 percent of all of the ocean plastic by 2040. 

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains 1.8 million pieces of plastic and that number is only projected to increase. 

If all goes according to the plan, the Ocean Cleanup technology could effectively solve one of the world’s biggest environmental hazards and make the seas safer for marine wildlife and seabirds. 

The system still has to undergo some more testing, trials, and assembly before the cleanup technology will be towed 1,200 nautical miles offshore to start cleanup.

Groundbreaking technology developed by a company based in the UK and Sweden has the potential to generate solar energy that is 95 percent cheaper than the solar power from existing systems. <a href="http://www.unitedsunsystems.com/">United Sun Systems</a> has developed a battery that can store heat from the sun without any waste, according to a new <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5836015/Could-solar-energy-cheaper-fossil-fuels-new-battery-make-technology-95-cheaper.html">Daily Mail</a> report.

The new device could make <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-power-dominated-investments/">solar energy</a> cheaper than fossil fuels for the very first time. The solar-powered battery, which is made out of patented metal alloy and hydrogen, converts heat from the sun into electricity. 

While light from the sun cannot be stored, heat from the sun can, and the new device can store it for up to 100 years and distribute it as needed. Furthermore, a single solar power dish can generate power to 11 homes.

Dr. Ragaiy Zidan is a scientist at <a href="https://srnl.doe.gov/">Savannah River National Laboratory</a> and the inventor of the technology.

“Prior to the discovery of this class of hydride materials, storing heat at this temperature was only possible using expensive and highly corrosive materials,” said Dr. Zidan.

“This is a game changing technology for the concentrated solar power sector that will drastically reduce its cost and improve its performance.”

The solar dish has a diameter of 46 feet and is covered with glass mirrors, which pull the sun’s heat to the dish to create temperatures of 750 degrees Celsius. The dish collects around 150kW of power every hour.

Lars Jacobsson is the chief executive officer of United Sun Systems.

“The heat is transferred from this focal point via a heat pipe into a large thermal battery that is located behind the dish where the heat is stored in a new heat battery technology based on ‘Metal Hydrides,’” Jacobsson told <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">MailOnline</a>.

“The battery is connected to a Stirling Engine that is converting the heat into kinetic energy, and connected to a generator it produces electricity.”

The first generation of the dish has already been tested, and the company has signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions for use of the battery technology.

New battery could make solar energy significantly cheaper

What if I told you that you could improve your <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/long-term-memory-starts-at-age-2-study-finds/">memory</a> while you slept? It would probably sound pretty amazing, and it requires no extra effort on your part. Well, researchers from the <a href="https://www.unm.edu/">University of New Mexico</a> may have just found a way to do this.

In a study published in <a href="http://www.jneurosci.org/">JNeurosci</a>, researchers demonstrate the potential for humans to improve memory using a non-invasive brain stimulation technique applied during sleep. The project was funded by the United States Department of Defense, and seeks to help us better understand the process of memory consolidation, which may translate into improved memory function in both healthy and patient populations. 

Long-term storage of memories is believed to be enabled by the synchronized transfer of memories during sleep from the hippocampus to the neocortex for long-term storage. The study’s authors wanted to enhance this natural process of overnight reactivation or neural replay to improve memory using a closed-loop transcranial alternating current stimulation system. This system would match the phase and frequency of the slow-wave oscillations that occur during sleep.

For the study, participants were trained and tested on a realistic visual discrimination task, where they had to detect potentially threatening hidden people or objects – such as enemy snipers and explosive devices. When participants received stimulation during overnight visits to their sleep laboratory, they exhibited improved performance in ability to detect targets the next day compared to when they did not receive the stimulation. Overnight memory changes were correlated with stimulation-induced neural changes, which could potentially be used to optimize the stimulation in future studies. 

The findings of this study suggest there is much more yet to discover when it comes to sleep and memory consolidation – including much more that could be improved for our own abilities.

Using stimulation, memory can be improved overnight

What if I told you that you could improve your...

A study led by astrobiologist Dirk Schulze-Makuch at <a href="https://wsu.edu/">Washington State University</a> has found that there may have been life on the Moon many years ago. The research has revealed two different times in ancient history when the Moon could have been inhabitable.

The researchers explain that conditions on the Moon's surface were adequate to support simple organisms after the Moon formed from a debris disk 4 billion years ago, and also during a peak in lunar volcanic activity which occurred around 3.5 billion years ago.

During both of these timeframes, scientists believe the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moon-longer-days-earth/">Moon</a> was releasing large quantities of volatile gases such as water vapor. The researchers say this could have formed pools of water on the moon's surface, along with an atmosphere dense enough to persist for millions of years.

“If liquid water and a significant atmosphere were present on the early Moon for long periods of time, we think the lunar surface would have been at least transiently habitable,” said Schulze-Makuch.

In 2009 and 2010, an international team of scientists discovered hundreds of millions of metric tons of water ice on the Moon. There is also evidence to suggest that there is a large amount of water in the lunar mantle, which is thought to have emerged very early in the Moon's formation.

Furthermore, some scientists believe that the early Moon had a magnetic field that could have protected lifeforms from deadly solar winds.

Schulze-Makuch explained that it is possible that life on the Moon originated as it did here on Earth, but he said that it is more likely that it was transported in by a meteorite.

Fossilized cyanobacteria that are between 3. 5 and 3. 8 billion years old provide the earliest evidence for life on Earth. At this time in the solar system, giant meteorite impacts were common. Meteorites containing cyanobacteria or other simple organisms could have blasted off the surface of the Earth and landed on the Moon.

“It looks very much like the Moon was habitable at this time,” said Schulze-Makuch. “There could have actually been microbes thriving in water pools on the Moon until the surface became dry and dead.”

The anti-aging industry is a massive business, with a wide range of products available showing varying degrees of effectiveness. But what if <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-reverse-wrinkles-inside/">wrinkles</a> could be truly reversed, hair loss stopped, and skin elasticity restored?

Thanks to new research conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.uab.edu/">University of Alabama at Birmingham</a>, true age reversal at the cellular level may be a reality in the future. 

The study was published in the journal Cell Death and Disease. 

“Wrinkled skin and hair loss are obvious features of skin aging and aging-associated phenotypic changes in humans,” the research team writes. “We discovered that these aging-associated phenotypic changes could be reversed by restoring mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) content to wild-type level. To our knowledge this observation is unprecedented.”

The researchers knew that mitochondrial DNA depletion was associated with aging and age-associated chronic diseases, but were not sure to what extent. 

To test the relationship between aging, genetics, and mtDNA, the researchers depleted mtDNA in mice using a specific gene mutation. The mutated mice quickly exhibited rapid signs of aging including wrinkles and hair loss. 

The mice were given an antibiotic that caused mtDNA depletion and jumpstarted the rapid aging. 

Once the mtDNA depletion was reversed and mitochondrial function restored, within two months the mice had no wrinkles and shiny, thick fur. The mice were indistinguishable from other healthy mice of the same age, according to the <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jul/20/genetic-researchers-reverse-wrinkles-gray-hair-and/">Washington Times</a> which reported on the study.

The results of the study were so positive that the researchers have good reason to believe that similar gene therapies could reverse aging in humans. 

“This mouse model should provide an unprecedented opportunity for the development of preventive and therapeutic drug development strategies to augment the mitochondrial functions for the treatment of aging-associated skin and hair pathology and other human diseases in which mitochondrial dysfunction plays a significant role,” said Keshav K. Singh, an author of the study, in a statement.

A team of researchers at the <a href="http://www.gatech.edu/">Georgia Institute of Technology</a> have transformed crab shells and tree fibers into a material that could potentially replace flexible plastic film packaging.

The new material is made by spraying multiple layers of chitin from crab shells and cellulose from trees to create a flexible film similar to the plastic film that is used to keep food fresh.

Study co-author J. Carson Meredith is a professor in Georgia Tech's School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

“The main benchmark that we compare it to is PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, one of the most common petroleum-based materials in the transparent packaging you see in vending machines and soft drink bottles,” said Professor Meredith. 

“Our material showed up to a 67 percent reduction in oxygen permeability over some forms of PET, which means it could in theory keep foods fresher longer.”


Cellulose and chitin are the most abundant natural biopolymers on the planet. The team devised a way to suspend cellulose and chitin nanofibers in water while spraying them onto a surface in alternating layers. Once the material has dried, it is strong, flexible, transparent, and compostable.

“We had been looking at cellulose nanocrystals for several years and exploring ways to improve those for use in lightweight composites as well as food packaging, because of the huge market opportunity for renewable and compostable packaging, and how important food packaging overall is going to be as the population continues to grow,” said Professor Meredith.

The new material will improve upon the effectiveness of conventional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/adidas-committed-recycled-plastic/">plastic packaging</a> because of its crystalline structure, which will keep oxygen from passing through and keep food fresher.

“It's difficult for a gas molecule to penetrate a solid crystal, because it has to disrupt the crystal structure,” explained Professor Meredith. “Something like PET on the other hand has a significant amount of amorphous or non-crystalline content, so there are more paths easier for a small gas molecule to find its way through.”


With the amount of cellulose and chitin-rich byproducts already available, there is probably enough material to make this flexible packaging alternative a reality, according to Professor Meredith.

But first, a cost effective manufacturing process needs to be developed, as well as methods to mass produce chitin. Additionally, more research is needed to improve the material's ability to block water vapor.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/journal/ascecg">ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering</a>.

This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.

The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.

Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>. This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.

Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.

385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.

While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
