<p>For half a century, black hole fireworks have lived mostly in theory. The standard picture holds that if black holes ever “explode,” it’s vanishingly rare - maybe once every 100,000 years somewhere in the universe - and far beyond our reach to witness.</p>



<p>A new analysis flips that expectation on its head. Physicists at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> argue there’s better than a nine-in-ten chance that an observable black hole outburst will occur in the next ten years. </p>



<p>The team noted that our existing array of space- and ground-based telescopes is already capable of seeing it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-that-can-explode">Black holes that can explode</h2>



<p>The scenario hinges on a particular class of black hole first proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1970: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primordial-black-holes-may-be-shifting-earths-orbit/">primordial black holes</a> (PBHs).</p>



<p>Unlike their heavyweight cousins born from the deaths of massive stars, PBHs could have formed in the first fractions of a second after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/">Big Bang</a>. During that time, extreme density ripples compressed pockets of the early universe.</p>



<p>Crucially, a PBH can be far lighter than a stellar black hole. And the lighter a black hole is, the hotter it becomes, slowly bleeding energy as particles via Hawking radiation. </p>



<p>As it shrinks, it heats up even more in a runaway process that ends in a final, brilliant outburst. This outburst is a flash of particles and high-energy light that, in principle, we can detect.</p>



<p>That last part has been the sticking point. If PBHs exist, why haven’t we seen one go off? The prevailing wisdom has been that the odds are simply too small on human timescales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-twist-with-big-consequences">Small twist with big consequences</h2>



<p>The UMass Amherst team revisited one of the field’s quiet assumptions: that primordial black holes carry no electric charge. </p>



<p>In their work, they explore a “dark QED” toy model - an analog of electromagnetism that includes a very heavy, hypothetical cousin of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shape-of-electrons-revealed-first-time-through-big-advance-in-quantum-physics/">electron</a>, sometimes called a dark electron.</p>



<p>If PBHs formed with even a tiny amount of this dark electric charge, the researchers show, the charge could temporarily stabilize the black hole’s evaporation. That pause delays the finale, so more PBHs would be reaching their terminal phase now. </p>



<p>With all current experimental constraints folded in, their calculations shift the expected cadence of observable PBH explosions from “about once every hundred millennia” to “roughly once per decade.”</p>



<p>“We’re not claiming it’s guaranteed, but the probability may be as high as 90% that one occurs within the next ten years," said Baker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-an-exploding-black-hole">Catching an exploding black hole</h2>



<p>If a PBH is in its endgame, it should spew a burst of Hawking radiation: a short-lived cascade of particles and photons across a broad energy range. That signature is exactly the kind of high-energy transient today’s observatories are built to chase.</p>



<p>Space telescopes sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays, wide-field optical surveyors scanning the sky nightly, and radio arrays listening for fleeting bursts could all contribute to catching - and confirming - the event. </p>



<p>Because only lightweight primordial black holes can explode today, detecting Hawking radiation would be tantamount to detecting a PBH.</p>



<p>The team’s message is simple: prepare the observing playbook now. Coordinated triggers, rapid follow-up, and cross-checks across wavelengths could turn a single flash into a definitive detection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-would-rewrite-the-textbooks">Detection would rewrite the textbooks</h2>



<p>Seeing a PBH explode would do more than check a box next to Hawking’s most famous prediction. It would provide the first direct evidence that black holes radiate and evaporate, lifting a key idea out of the realm of theory and into observation.</p>



<p>It would also prove PBHs exist at all - and that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-baby-pictures-of-the-very-early-universe-cosmic-microwave-background/">infant universe</a> could seed gravitational monsters without stars. Perhaps most tantalizing, the debris of that final flash would act like a cosmic census. </p>



<p>In principle, the particle spray encodes every constituent of nature that couples to gravity and can be thermally produced. These include familiar residents like electrons and quarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/">Higgs boson</a>, any dark matter particles if they exist, and potentially species we’ve never seen.</p>



<p>A single well-observed event could offer a once-only inventory of the universe’s building blocks, informing everything from particle physics to cosmology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-claims-big-stakes">Bold claims, big stakes</h2>



<p>Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. The group’s “dark QED” setup is intentionally simple, and the true microphysics of any dark sector - if it exists - could differ.</p>



<p>Still, the work highlights how modest changes to long-held assumptions can dramatically alter expectations for what we might observe. </p>



<p>It also underscores an opportunity: even if the odds are lower than the headline number, the payoff of a detection is so immense that it makes sense to plan for it.</p>



<p>We already know how to look. We already have the tools. If nature obliges, the next decade could deliver a brief, brilliant flash that confirms Hawking radiation, reveals <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/">primordial black holes</a>, and hands physicists a ledger of the universe’s particles - all in one cosmic firework.</p>

<p>According to Peng Zheng, an assistant research scientist at <a href="https://peabody.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins University</a> and the lead author of the study, the team was able to invent a new technology that can quickly and accurately establish if someone is having a heart attack.</p>

<p>It provides quick results within approximately five to seven minutes and boasts greater accuracy and affordability than existing methods.</p>



<p>Designed for speedy diagnostic work in clinical settings, this novel test presents a promising prospect for adaptation into a handheld tool for first responders or even for home use. </p>

<p>This finding suggests there is a biological reason for why women might not respond as well to opioid-based treatments.</p>



<p>The research highlights a major distinction in how pain relief strategies should be tailored based on gender, potentially altering the way we approach pain management altogether.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-opioids-may-not-help-women-in-pain">Opioids may not help women in pain</h2>



<p>Powerful synthetic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-discovery-offers-hope-for-tackling-opioid-addiction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">opioid</a> drugs such as morphine and fentanyl are the leading painkillers at our disposal today. </p>



<p>By adhering to the same receptors as endogenous opioids, these synthetic molecules pack a potent punch. However, this characteristic also primes them for a high risk of addiction.</p>



<p>One of the profound peculiarities of opioid therapy is the subpar response exhibited by women. </p>



<p>"Dependence develops because people start taking more opioids when their original dosage stops working," explained Dr. Fadel Zeidan, an expert at the UC San Diego Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion.</p>



<p>"Although speculative, our findings suggest that maybe one reason that females are more likely to become addicted to opioids is that they’re biologically less responsive to them and need to take more to experience any pain relief.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-approach-to-pain-management">A new approach to pain management </h2>



<p>The research was based on data from two clinical trials consisting of 98 participants, including healthy individuals and chronic lower back pain sufferers.</p>

<p>Tailoring treatment to an individual’s gender could improve patient outcomes and decrease opioid reliance and misuse. </p>

<p>As we move forward, it's evident that doctors will need to carefully consider painkiller prescriptions, possibly adopting gender-specific guidelines to safeguard women from the risks of dependency.</p>

<p>Scientists have long entertained the question, "Is there life on Mars?" While there's no concrete evidence yet, a recent NASA study has sparked new curiosity. The research suggests that the frozen water beneath the Martian surface could potentially host microbial life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-for-photosynthesis-on-mars">Potential for photosynthesis on Mars</h2>



<p>Based on computer modeling, the scientists discovered that sunlight could penetrate the water ice, thereby enabling photosynthesis in the meltwater pools beneath the surface.</p>



<p>Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy for food. </p>



<p>On <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mars-became-uninhabitable-after-being-life-supporting-ocean-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, ice formations have been found teeming with algae, fungi, and cyanobacteria - all of which thrive on photosynthesis. Could Mars be home to similar lifeforms?</p>



<p>The research was led by Aditya Khuller, who is affiliated with <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a>) in Southern California.</p>



<p>“If we’re trying to find life anywhere in the universe today, Martian ice exposures are probably one of the most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insights-alien-life-mars-water-sulfur-discovered-gained-studying-extreme-life-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accessible places</a> we should be looking,” said Khuller.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-in-mars-frozen-water">Life in Mars' frozen water</h2>



<p>With two kinds of ice on Mars - frozen water and frozen carbon dioxide - the scientists focused on water ice as a potential host of life.</p>



<p>The experts traced the origin of this ice back to ancient snow mixed with dust during Martian ice ages in the past million years. This snowy blend, now solidified into ice, continues to carry specks of dust.</p>



<p>Even though dust could potentially obscure light in the ice’s deeper layers, it holds the key to how subsurface pools of water could form within the ice when exposed to the Sun. </p>



<p>Just like a black shirt absorbs more sunlight than a white one, dark dust absorbs more sunlight than the surrounding ice. This could potentially warm up and melt the surrounding ice - even a few feet below the surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thriving-ecosystems-for-simple-lifeforms">Thriving ecosystems for simple lifeforms </h2>



<p>However, not all Mars scientists are on the same page about whether ice can actually melt when exposed to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-curiosity-rover-makes-surprising-find-under-martian-rock-sulfur-crystals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian surface</a>. </p>



<p>Challenges arise due to Mars' thin, dry atmosphere, where water ice tends to sublimate - meaning it turns directly into gas, similar to our dry ice here on Earth. Yet, these atmospheric constraints wouldn't hinder below the surface of a dusty snowpack or glacier.</p>



<p>Just like Earth's cryoconite holes - small cavities in ice formed by particles of windblown dust, the same phenomena can be observed on Mars. </p>



<p>These dust particles, absorbing sunlight and melting into the ice, could potentially form pockets of meltwater, paving the way for thriving ecosystems for simple lifeforms.</p>



<p>“This is a common phenomenon on Earth,” said study co-author Phil Christensen of Arizona State University, referring to ice melting from within. "Dense snow and ice can melt from the inside out, letting in sunlight that warms it like a greenhouse, rather than melting from the top down.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-mars-climate-support-life">Can Mars' climate support life?</h2>



<p>Understanding the climatic conditions of Mars is crucial in assessing its capacity to support life. Mars experiences much colder temperatures than Earth, with an average surface temperature of roughly -80 degrees Fahrenheit (-62 degrees Celsius).</p>



<p>Such frigid conditions arise from its thin atmosphere, composed primarily of carbon dioxide, offering minimal insulation against the harsh cold. </p>



<p>However, variations in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-plan-terraform-mars-nanoparticles-would-make-it-habitable-for-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>’ axial tilt and orbit can lead to changes in climate, similar to Earth's seasons but with more extreme shifts. This dynamic atmospheric behavior sparks curiosity about how these changes may influence ice stability and potential life-harboring environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-mars-exploration">Future Mars exploration</h2>



<p>The quest to unravel Mars’ mysteries stands at the forefront of planetary exploration. Upcoming missions, such as NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission, aim to collect Martian rocks and soil for unprecedented analysis. </p>



<p>These samples could provide invaluable insights into Mars' geology, climate history, and potential biosignatures - indicators of past or present life.</p>



<p>Additionally, advancing technologies like spaceborne instruments and robotic systems enable more precise and extensive studies of Martian terrains. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prime-targets-for-future-research">Prime targets for future research </h2>



<p>Christensen and Khuller's latest paper theorizes that dusty ice could permit enough light for photosynthesis even nine feet below the surface. This could shield subsurface pools of water from evaporating and protect against harmful radiation, given that Mars lacks a protective magnetic field like Earth’s.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the water ice most likely to form subsurface pools would exist in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-search-for-signs-of-life-on-mars-continues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>' tropics - between 30 degrees and 60 degrees latitude, in both the northern and southern hemispheres.</p>



<p>Propelling this fascinating research further, Khuller plans to replicate some of Mars' dusty ice in a lab. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, scientists worldwide are mapping out promising spots on Mars to search for shallow meltwater. These locations could be prime targets for future scientific endeavors, beckoning both human and robotic explorers.</p>

<p>Artificial nests can significantly boost the breeding success of endangered African penguins, but their effectiveness varies depending on the colony.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A new study led by researchers from South Africa and the UK highlights how different artificial nest designs offer varying benefits depending on local conditions at different penguin colonies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breeding-success-of-african-penguins">Breeding success of African penguins</h2>



<p>The study, led by <a href="https://www.mandela.ac.za/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nelson Mandela University</a>, monitored the breeding success of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/african-penguins-grave-outlook-for-an-endangered-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">African penguins</a> over 12 years across South Africa. </p>



<p>The findings show that artificial nests improved breeding outcomes, increasing breeding success by 16.5% compared to natural nests.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These artificial nests, deployed at various penguin colonies, offered a safe and controlled environment for the penguins to lay eggs and raise chicks, compensating for the loss of natural nesting sites.</p>



<p>However, the experts also found that no single design of artificial nests was universally effective across all colonies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The newly developed double-layered ceramic nests generally outperformed earlier designs, but their success varied based on the specific challenges each colony faced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-colony-needs-of-african-penguins">Colony needs of African penguins </h2>



<p>Study lead author Lorien Pichegru, a professor at the Institute for Coastal and Marine Research at Nelson Mandela University, emphasized the need for colony-specific conservation strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The most effective designs of artificial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-behavior-beak-shape-can-predict-nest-materials/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nests</a> were colony-specific, with different colonies facing different threats,” Pichegru explained. </p>



<p>“Penguins at land colonies such as Boulders Beach face threats from mammals, whereas penguins at colonies devoid of vegetation such as Bird Island face sun exposure. Different artificial nest designs were more suited to responding to different threats.”</p>



<p>The ceramic nests, featuring slanted roofs and a 5 cm air gap between layers for better insulation, were particularly effective at regulating temperature in colonies exposed to direct sunlight.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In contrast, more traditional A-frame plywood nests, cement nests made from fiberglass and cement mixtures, and fiberglass burrows that mimic natural burrows each had their own advantages in different environments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These findings suggest that conservation efforts cannot adopt a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to nest design.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-food-shortages-and-other-threats">Addressing food shortages and other threats</h2>



<p>While artificial nests have proven beneficial, the researchers stress that they are only part of a broader conservation strategy needed to halt the decline of African penguins since these seabirds face numerous challenges.</p>



<p>“The main causes of the recent decline in African penguin numbers are poor food availability, oil spills, underwater <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-noise-is-getting-louder-what-does-this-mean-for-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">noise pollution</a>, and predation,” Pichegru said. “Biologically meaningful fishing exclusion zones around their major colonies are urgently needed.” </p>



<p>These protected zones would help ensure that penguins have adequate access to their primary food sources, such as sardines and anchovies, which are critical for their survival and breeding success.</p>



<p>African penguins have experienced a dramatic population decline of 90% over the past 70 years, with their numbers now down to approximately 8,500 breeding pairs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This decline has elevated them to one of the most threatened seabird species worldwide, facing a high risk of extinction if effective conservation measures are not implemented.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breeding-success-across-different-nests">Breeding success across different nests</h2>



<p>In their research, the team observed both natural nests and four types of artificial nests across the eight largest African penguin colonies in South Africa.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Weekly monitoring was conducted from egg-laying to either chick fledging or nest failure, providing a comprehensive picture of breeding outcomes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-nests">Artificial nests</h3>



<p>Artificial nests included the new ceramic designs, A-frame pine plywood nests (the oldest design), cement nests made with a fiberglass mix, and fiberglass burrows that replicate the structure of natural burrows.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Each design aimed to address specific environmental challenges, such as temperature regulation and predator protection.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-natural-nests">Natural nests</h3>



<p>The researchers noted that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-snowstorms-impact-breeding-success-of-petrels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breeding success</a> in natural nests might have been slightly underestimated due to logistical challenges. </p>



<p>Natural nests that were more accessible for monitoring could also be more vulnerable to weather and predators, potentially skewing the data.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We also weren’t always able to follow the fate of individual birds or breeding pairs closely over multiple years in this study,” said Richard Sherley, a co-author from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>. </p>



<p>“That means we can’t be certain how much of the benefit we measured comes from the ‘best’ penguins actively choosing to breed in artificial nests.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-conservation-efforts-for-african-penguins">Future conservation efforts for African penguins </h2>



<p>Understanding what makes certain artificial nests more appealing to penguins could further enhance <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a> strategies. </p>



<p>Sherley pointed out that knowing why penguins prefer particular nest types could guide the design of even more effective artificial nests in the future.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This includes studying whether penguins are attracted to nests due to improved protection from predators, better temperature control, or other factors. Pichegru agreed that future research could refine artificial nest designs. </p>



<p>“Understanding the mechanisms by which artificial nests improve breeding success at different colonies could help to improve future artificial nest designs. For instance, is it improved protection from predators, is it decreased heat loads on eggs, or something else?” she said.</p>

<p>By deploying targeted strategies, researchers hope to give African penguins a better chance of survival, ensuring that these charismatic birds continue to thrive along South Africa's coasts for generations to come.</p>

<p>Study lead author Shelley Lumba is an assistant professor in the Department of Cell and Systems Biology at the <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto</a>.</p>



<p>“As we begin to understand how plants and fungi communicate, we will better understand the complexities of the soil ecosystem, leading to healthier crops and improving our approach to biodiversity,” said&nbsp;Professor Lumba.</p>



<p>Soil isn't just dull old earth. It's a world buzzing with activity. Plant roots and fungi have a unique symbiotic relationship here. They engage in a silent molecular "language" to coordinate their structures.</p>



<p>In essence, plants release strigolactones, signaling fungi to attach to their roots and deliver much-needed phosphates in exchange for carbon. It's like two good friends helping each other out.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-plant-and-fungi-communication">Decoding plant and fungi communication</h2>



<p>For the study, Lumba and her team investigated why and how fungi react to strigolactones. They discovered that a whopping 80% of plants depend on this relationship.</p>



<p>Enhancing this interaction could potentially lead to more robust crops, decrease the need for fertilizer, and reduce harmful phosphate runoff into our waterways.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-side-of-the-story">Dark side of the story</h2>

<p>All that has changed thanks to Lumba and her team. Using baker's yeast, they have cracked the code and opened up a new chapter in our understanding of the world beneath our feet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-did-they-do-it">How did they do it?</h2>



<p>The researchers treated yeast with strigolactones and closely observed how the genes reacted. They discovered that strigolactones increased the expression of genes labeled "PHO" related to phosphate metabolism. </p>



<p>The hormone functioned through Pho84, a protein on the yeast's surface that keeps an eye on phosphate levels. This activated other proteins along the phosphate pathway.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-healthy-soil-healthy-planet">Healthy soil, healthy planet</h2>



<p>Lumba and her team concluded that plants release strigolactones when they're phosphate-hungry, which signals the yeast to alter its phosphate uptake. The researchers found this to be a universal truth, not only for domesticated fungi like baker's yeast but also for wild fungi.</p>



<p>At the heart of this novel approach is gene expression, which, according to Lumba, "identifies the effect of the SL response on fungal growth." </p>

<p>Without them, larger marine animals wouldn't have the sustenance they need to survive. Phytoplankton alone contribute to about half of the world's oxygen supply, making them indispensable for life on Earth.</p>



<p>Beyond their role in producing oxygen, these microorganisms are vital in regulating carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. </p>



<p>As they consume carbon during photosynthesis, they help reduce greenhouse gases, mitigating the effects of climate change. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-marine-snow">Mystery of marine snow</h2>



<p>Marine snow is a mix of these microscopic dead organisms, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-help-predict-ocean-biodiversity-losses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a>, bacteria, fecal pellets, and other organic particles. It absorbs about a third of human-made carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. </p>



<p>This material sinks to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-discovery-deep-ocean-no-photosynthesis-baffles-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean floor</a>, where the carbon is locked away for thousands of years. Scientists call this process the biological pump.</p>



<p>Until now, the exact way these particles fall through the ocean's depths -- averaging about 2.5 miles -- wasn't fully understood. Prakash's team set out to change that.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rotating-microscope">Rotating microscope</h2>



<p>The researchers developed a unique device called a rotating microscope. </p>



<p>This invention simulates vertical movement, allowing them to observe how organisms travel through the water. It adjusts temperature, light, and pressure to match specific ocean conditions.</p>



<p>Over five years, the team took this microscope on research vessels across all major oceans -- from the Arctic to Antarctica. They collected samples of marine snow and analyzed how it sinks in real-time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-role-of-mucus-parachutes">Surprising role of mucus "parachutes"</h2>



<p>What they found was unexpected. Sometimes, marine snow forms parachute-like mucus structures. </p>



<p>These mucus parachutes slow down the sinking process, doubling the time the particles spend in the upper 100 meters of the ocean.</p>

<p>"We haven't been looking the right way," Prakash said. This extended suspension means more microbes can break down the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-may-flip-plankton-into-carbon-emitters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">organic carbon</a> in marine snow. </p>



<p>Instead of sinking and storing carbon away, the carbon gets recycled back into the ocean, reducing the amount removed from the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-marine-snow-and-ocean-carbon">Marine snow and ocean carbon</h2>



<p>Since marine snow is a living ecosystem, studying it at sea is crucial. The rotating microscope allowed the team to see these processes in detail, right where they happen.</p>



<p><a href="https://profiles.stanford.edu/rahul-chajwa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rahul Chajwa</a>, a postdoctoral scholar in Prakash's lab and the study's lead author, was amazed by the findings. </p>



<p>“Theory tells you how a flow around a small particle looks like, but what we saw on the boat was dramatically different,” Chajwa explained. “We are at the beginning of understanding these complex dynamics.”</p>



<p>These mucus parachutes mean that previous estimates of the ocean's ability to sequester carbon might be too high. </p>



<p>If more carbon is recycled near the surface, less is stored deep in the ocean. This could have significant impacts on climate models and policies aimed at reducing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-weaker-ocean-will-release-more-carbon-into-the-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric carbon dioxide</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-natural-environments">Studying natural environments</h2>



<p>“We cannot even ask the fundamental question of what life does without emulating the environment that it evolved with,” Prakash explained. </p>



<p>“In biology, stripping it away from its environment has stripped away any of our capacity to ask the right questions.”</p>



<p>For too long, scientists have studied organisms in artificial settings, like slides under microscopes. By taking their tools to the high seas, Prakash's team is changing that approach.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-refining-ocean-carbon-models">Refining ocean carbon models</h2>



<p>The researchers are now working to improve their models and integrate their findings into larger climate models. </p>



<p>They plan to release an open dataset from their six global expeditions -- the largest of its kind on marine snow sedimentation.</p>



<p>They're also investigating what factors influence the production of these mucus parachutes. This could include environmental stressors or specific bacteria species.</p>



<p>Despite the challenges, Prakash remains optimistic. On a recent trip off the coast of Northern California, the team found processes that might speed up carbon sequestration.</p>



<p>"Every time I observe the world of plankton via our tools, I learn something new," he said. These discoveries could lead to new strategies for enhancing the ocean's ability to absorb carbon.</p>

<p>“We take for granted certain phenomena, but the simplest set of ideas can have profound effects. Observing these details -- like the mucus tails of marine snow -- opens new doors to understanding the fundamental principles of our world," Prakesh concluded.</p>



<p>By paying attention to the small details, we can uncover secrets that have a big impact on our world. This research is a reminder of the importance of curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge.</p>

<p>A new study has revealed an intriguing phenomenon that could be contributing to the increasing consumption of plastic waste by whales. </p>



<p>It all starts within the mysterious depths of the ocean where sunlight does not venture. This is where the likes of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-have-the-sperm-whales-gulf-gone-gulf-jumbo-squid-scientists-think-they-know/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sperm whales</a> and goose-beaked whales forage for food, relying on their intricate soundwave-based navigation system to find their next meal.</p>



<p>But there seems to be a hitch - a torn plastic party balloon can sound remarkably similar to a delicious squid in these lightless depths.</p>



<p>A recent study has found a potential reason why whales might mistake plastic for prey – they sound the same underwater.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acoustic-signatures-in-the-deep-sea">Acoustic signatures in the deep sea</h2>



<p>What exactly are these acoustic signatures? Well, when a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blue-whales-continue-their-battle-for-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whale</a> sends out clicks and buzzes from a vocal cord-like structure near their blowholes, the sounds bounce off objects in the water. </p>



<p>The sounds that return carry information about the size, shape, and nature of those objects. This is how the whales "see" and interpret their surroundings. And to their acoustic perception, their favorite squid sounds eerily similar to a plastic bag.</p>



<p>"There are hundreds of types of plastic, and the various material properties including polymer (chemical) composition, additives, shape, size, age/weathering, and degree of fouling likely play a role in the frequency-specific responses observed," noted the study authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-pollution-and-whales">Plastic pollution and whales </h2>



<p>Now, it's crucial to mention that the whales' sound-based navigation system is not a new kid on the evolutionary block. This sophisticated system has been helping whales find food in the pitch-dark ocean depths for the past 25 million years.</p>



<p>However, plastic pollution is a relatively new challenge faced by whales, and according to Merrill's findings, it's messing with their ultrasonic grocery shopping.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-debris-around-whales">Plastic debris around whales</h2>



<p>Merrill and his team collected typical plastic trash items like shopping bags, ropes, bottles, and balloons from beaches in Beaufort and Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.</p>



<p>These items were then suspended underwater and subjected to sonar transponder tests on Duke Marine Lab's ship, the R/V Shearwater. </p>



<p>The team performed acoustic testing on these items at three varying sonar frequencies that span the range of 'clicks' emitted by different species of deep-diving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-a-warming-climate-will-change-the-humpback-whales-diet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a>.</p>



<p>The sounds of real squid (albeit deceased ones) and pieces of squid beak were also recorded for comparison.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-whales-mistake-plastic-for-prey">Whales mistake plastic for prey</h2>



<p>The results were as alarming as they were surprising. The plastic debris almost always sounded like food, especially plastic films and fragments, which are among the most commonly found items in the stomachs of deceased whales.</p>



<p>Merrill suggests that we could consider re-engineering some plastics to not have an acoustic signature. But he also warns of potential risks. </p>



<p>For instance, if fishing net and fishing line became "acoustically invisible," that could lead to increased entanglements where whales wouldn't be able to identify and avoid these threats.</p>



<p>For this pioneering study, Merrill collaborated with scientists from neighboring marine labs operated by NOAA, NC State University, and UNC – Chapel Hill.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-conservation-efforts">Implications for conservation efforts</h2>



<p>The findings from Merrill's study have profound implications for marine conservation strategies aimed at protecting whales. </p>



<p>Traditional approaches have largely focused on reducing the amount of plastic that enters the oceans - a task vital to the health of marine ecosystems.</p>



<p>However, understanding that plastic can acoustically resemble prey to whales suggests that addressing the challenge could require innovative solutions within the manufacturing sector as well. </p>



<p>This could involve developing materials that emit distinct acoustic signatures detectable by marine life without posing any risk of ingestion. </p>



<p>Such multidisciplinary cooperation between conservationists and material scientists could pave the way for groundbreaking strategies to safeguard these majestic creatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-the-plastic-crisis">Addressing the plastic crisis</h2>



<p>In light of these revelations, there is an urgent need to collectively address the plastic pollution crisis. Reducing our reliance on harmful plastics and advancing research into safer alternatives is paramount.</p>



<p>Moreover, stringent regulations on plastic manufacturing could play a crucial role in mitigating this crisis. By innovating responsibly and enforcing global standards, we can not only protect marine biodiversity but also ensure a healthier planet. </p>



<p>While technological innovations and alternatives to plastic are critical in addressing this issue of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-rarest-whale-found-on-new-zealand-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a>, perhaps the more immediate and straightforward action we can all take is responsible disposal of our waste.</p>

<p>Meet <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-anticipated-comet-of-2024-returns-this-weekend-after-80000-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS</a>, a celestial wanderer that's been on an 80,000-year long odyssey. </p>



<p>From the outermost regions of our solar system, this comet embarks on an interminable journey around the sun. The last time it paid us a visit, our ancestors were just crafting civilizations.</p>



<p>Although its closest Earth pass was on October 12, it remains visible for the remainder of the month. </p>



<p>So, how do you spot it? An hour into the sunset, turn your sight to where the sun has sunk and voila. The elusive comet, while difficult to sight with the naked eye, could be seen with a pair of binoculars. </p>

The night sky is all set to parade the Hunter's Moon, but this year it's not just a full moon -- <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hunters-supermoon-prepares-to-illuminate-the-october-skies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">it's a supermoon</a>! </p>



<p>This phenomenon occurs when the moon is at its closest to Earth during its full phase, making it larger and brighter.</p>



<p>The Hunter’s Moon got its name from the historical practice of hunters utilizing the bright moonlight to track game and gather food in preparation for winter. This full moon rises soon after sunset, extending the period of illumination more than usual.</p>



<p>As it ascends, the Hunter’s Moon appears particularly large and orange, a visual effect produced by its lower position on the horizon and the scattering of light in the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This lunar phase holds cultural significance across various traditions, representing a time for preparation and gathering, underscoring the importance of readiness for the impending colder months.</p>



<p>The Hunter’s Moon is generally in October -- although once every four years it makes an appearance in November.</p>



<p>While contemporary life may not depend on this extra light to hunt or complete outdoor tasks, the Hunter’s Moon remains a fascinating reminder of nature’s rhythms and the cyclical changes of the seasons.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-puts-the-super-in-the-supermoon">What puts the 'super' in the supermoon?</h3>



<p>So, you might ask, "What's so super about the supermoon?" As Anna Gammon-Ross, a seasoned astronomer from the <a href="https://www.rmg.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Royal Museums Greenwich</a> explains, a supermoon occurs when a full moon is nearest to Earth in its orbit. </p>



<p>This cosmic alignment results in a moon that's roughly 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. On seeing the radiant orb hanging low in the sky, you'd agree that the supermoon does indeed earn its name.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shooting-stars-orionids-meteor-shower">Shooting stars: Orionids meteor shower</h2>



<p>The Orionids meteor shower is one of the highlights of the October night sky. These meteors are actually tiny bits of dust left behind by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/orionids-meteor-shower-peaks-this-weekend-heres-what-to-expect/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Halley's Comet</a> as it travels through the solar system. </p>



<p>When Earth passes through this trail of debris, the particles slam into our atmosphere at incredible speeds -- up to 148,000 miles per hour! As they burn up, they create those bright streaks of light we love to watch.</p>



<p>What's cool about the Orionids is that they're known for their fast and bright meteors, often leaving glowing trails that last for a few seconds. </p>



<p>The best time to catch them is in the early morning hours before dawn, when the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/betelgeuse-one-of-our-brightest-stars-will-vanish-from-sight-next-week/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">constellation Orion</a> (which gives the meteor shower its name) is high in the sky. </p>



<p>Just find a comfy spot away from city lights, let your eyes adjust to the darkness, and enjoy the show -- no special equipment needed.</p>

This week, the October sky is treating us to a...

<p>The Europa Clipper is headed toward Jupiter’s moon, Europa, with a mission to search for signs of life.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/send-your-name-to-jupiters-ocean-moon-as-europa-clipper-mission-searches-for-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spacecraft</a> is beginning an incredible 1.8 billion-mile (2.9 billion-kilometer) journey, using gravity assists for propulsion.</p>



<p>Clipper will make its first stop at Mars in four months, followed by a return to Earth in 2026 for an additional gravity boost.</p>



<p>The spacecraft is scheduled to begin orbiting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-life-on-europa-co2-discovery-by-webb-increases-the-odds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter</a> in April 2030 and is estimated to fly past the moon Europa 49 times, collecting valuable data during each pass.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-europa-clipper-mission">Europa Clipper mission</h2>



<p>The Europa Clipper is NASA's largest spacecraft built for a planetary mission and the first dedicated to studying an ocean world beyond Earth.</p>



<p>"Congratulations to our Europa Clipper team for beginning the first journey to an ocean world <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-compound-suggests-that-life-beyond-earth-could-be-common/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beyond Earth</a>," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. </p>



<p>"NASA leads the world in exploration and discovery, and the Europa Clipper mission is no different. By exploring the unknown, Europa Clipper will help us better understand whether there is the potential for life not just within our solar system, but among the billions of moons and planets beyond our Sun."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-habitable-worlds-beyond-earth">Searching for habitable worlds beyond Earth</h2>



<p>Five minutes after launch, Europa Clipper emerged as the rocket’s nose cone opened. An hour later, it separated from the rocket, with ground controllers confirming its status and establishing communication through NASA’s Deep Space Network.</p>

<p>"Europa Clipper’s scientific discoveries will build upon the legacy created by our other missions exploring Jupiter - including Juno, Galileo, and Voyager - in our search for habitable worlds beyond our home planet."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-ocean-world-with-intriguing-possibilities">An ocean world with intriguing possibilities</h2>



<p>The mission’s primary goal is to determine whether Europa has the conditions to support life.</p>



<p>While Europa is similar in size to our Moon, its interior composition sets it apart. Data from NASA’s Galileo mission in the 1990s revealed that beneath Europa's icy shell is a vast, salty ocean, possibly holding more water than all of Earth’s oceans combined. </p>



<p>Evidence also suggests that Europa may contain organic compounds and energy sources beneath its surface. </p>



<p>If Europa proves to be habitable, it could indicate that there are more life-supporting worlds in our universe than we previously imagined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-europa-clipper-will-deliver-mind-blowing-science">Europa Clipper will deliver mind-blowing science</h2>



<p>"We’re ecstatic to send Europa Clipper on its way to explore a potentially <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-confirms-an-ocean-on-europa-may-be-habitable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitable ocean world</a>, thanks to our colleagues and partners who’ve worked so hard to get us to this day," said Laurie Leshin, director of <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/liftoff-nasas-europa-clipper-sails-toward-ocean-moon-of-jupiter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> in Southern California. </p>



<p>"Europa Clipper will undeniably deliver mind-blowing science. While it's always bittersweet to send something we’ve labored over for years off on its journey, we know this remarkable team and spacecraft will expand our knowledge of our solar system and inspire future exploration."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-closer-look-at-europa-clipper">A closer look at Europa Clipper</h2>



<p>By 2031, Europa Clipper will begin flybys of Europa, using advanced instruments powered by NASA to study the moon’s surface and interior. Notably, over 4,000 people have contributed to the mission since 2015.</p>



<p>"As Europa Clipper embarks on its journey, I’ll be thinking about the countless hours of dedication, innovation, and teamwork that made this moment possible," said Jordan Evans, project manager at NASA JPL. </p>



<p>"This launch isn’t just the next chapter in our exploration of the solar system; it’s a leap toward uncovering the mysteries of another ocean world, driven by our shared curiosity and continued search to answer the question, ‘are we alone?’"</p>



<p>Embarking on this exciting mission, the Europa Clipper's three main science objectives are to determine the thickness of the moon’s icy shell and its interactions with the ocean below, investigate its composition, and to characterize its geology.</p>



<p>These detailed explorations will greatly expand our understanding of the astrobiological potential for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitable-worlds-new-strategy-to-identify-planets-that-may-host-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitable worlds beyond our planet</a>, offering new insights into where life might exist elsewhere in the universe.</p>

<p>Our very own star, the Sun, is moving into a phase known as the solar maximum, and this means things are about to get interesting.</p>



<p>As explained by Jamie Favors, who heads up NASA's <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/heliophysics/focus-areas/space-weather/">Space Weather</a><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/heliophysics/focus-areas/space-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> </a><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/heliophysics/focus-areas/space-weather/">Program</a>, the solar maximum is a time of increased sunspots and solar activity with implications for both our understanding of space and our everyday lives on Earth.</p>



<p>“This increase in activity provides an exciting opportunity to learn about our closest star -- but also causes real effects at Earth and throughout our solar system," Favors explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-solar-maximum">The solar maximum</h2>



<p>Let's first get to know what the solar maximum is. It's part of the Sun's 11-year cycle of changing magnetic activity. </p>



<p>This cycle peaks during a solar maximum, a time when the Sun's magnetic poles flip, much in a way Earth's magnetic North and South poles might switch places each decade. This dramatic flipping leads to a surge in solar activity.</p>



<p>How does this show up? The Sun's surface is dotted with more sunspots, sparks more solar flares, and ejects more solar material known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-solar-outburst-detected-simultaneously-at-earth-the-moon-and-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coronal mass ejections (CMEs)</a>. </p>



<p>These are all due to twists and turns in the Sun's magnetic field. Sunspots look like dark patches on the Sun's surface -- they're cooler than their surroundings and are hotbeds for solar eruptions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-keeping-a-close-watch-on-the-sun">Keeping a close watch on the Sun</h2>



<p>Since 1989, the International Solar Cycle Prediction Panel, jointly sponsored by <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> and <a href="https://www.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a>, has been keeping an eye on the sunspots and predicting solar activity. </p>



<p>The findings of this panel are crucial for preparing for potential impacts on Earth. Both NASA and NOAA have honed their methods for tracking the Sun's antics. </p>



<p>This is critical as what happens on the Sun can affect space weather, which in turn has effects ranging from beautiful to disruptive right here on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-space-weather-and-life-on-earth">Space weather and life on Earth</h2>



<p>Believe it or not, the Sun's antics can affect your day-to-day life. Those flares and CMEs can create solar storms, belting Earth with charged particles. </p>



<p>Once they reach our planet, they can interact with Earth's magnetic field and even cause geomagnetic storms.</p>



<p>These storms, while invisible to the naked eye, can interrupt satellite communications, mess with radio and GPS signals, and in extreme cases, even impact power grids. </p>



<p>Most of you probably don't remember the major blackout in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rare-g5-level-geomagnetic-storm-highest-level-hits-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quebec in 1989</a>, which was caused by a particularly powerful geomagnetic storm. With the solar maximum on the horizon, monitoring space weather is more important than ever.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recent-solar-storms">Recent solar storms</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biggest-solar-flare-since-2019-erupted-today-more-radio-blackouts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">In May 2024</a>, the Sun put up quite a show with a series of intense flares and CMEs, leading to some of the most potent geomagnetic storms we've seen in two decades. </p>



<p>These not only resulted in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-are-a-visual-warning-of-shocks-to-earths-magnetic-field/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bright auroras</a> but also held the potential to disrupt power and communication networks.</p>



<p>“This announcement doesn’t mean that this is the peak of solar activity we’ll see this solar cycle,” said Elsayed Talaat, director of space weather operations at the <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWPC</a>. </p>



<p>“While the Sun has reached the solar maximum period, the month that solar activity peaks on the Sun will not be identified for months or years.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-maximum-the-sun-and-the-future">Solar maximum, the Sun, and the future</h2>



<p>The solar maximum could last another year. In the meantime, scientists are keeping a close watch on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sun-solar-cycle-25-highest-number-sunspots-activity-seen-since-2001/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sunspot numbers</a> to gauge the full extent of this solar cycle. </p>



<p>The tradition of observing sunspots goes back centuries to when Galileo first spotted them in the early 1600s.</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sun-solar-cycle-25-highest-number-sunspots-activity-seen-since-2001/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Solar Cycle 25</a> sunspot activity has slightly exceeded expectations,” said Lisa Upton, co-chair of the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel and lead scientist at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. </p>



<p>“However, despite seeing a few large storms, they aren’t larger than what we might expect during the maximum phase of the cycle.”</p>



<p>The most powerful flare of the solar cycle so far was an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/severe-solar-storm-just-hit-earth-expect-auroras-in-southern-united-states/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X9.0 on Oct. 3</a> (X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the highest).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-auroras-missions-and-real-world-impact">Auroras, missions, and real-world impact</h2>



<p>On a positive note, this is an excellent time to catch the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/northern-lights-activity-will-intensify-over-the-next-18-months/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northern Lights</a>, with the ramped-up solar activity likely to produce more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/steve-phenomenon-not-aurora-has-dawn-side-twin-swarm-satellites-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">frequent and intense auroras</a>. </p>



<p>NASA's also making the most of the situation. In December 2024, its <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/parker-solar-probe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Parker Solar Probe</a> is set to make its closest-ever flyby of the Sun, with two more exciting close approaches in the pipeline.</p>



<p>Space weather predictions aren't just for space buffs. They can have real-world implications. Increased solar activity can pose risks to technology we use daily. </p>



<p>Airlines might need to reroute to steer clear of high-radiation areas, and operators must stay on alert to safeguard their satellites.</p>

<p>Bonobos, a species of endangered great apes that are among our closest relatives, might be more vulnerable to extinction than previously thought.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This is the conclusion of a genetic study co-led by scientists from the University College London (<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/">UCL</a>), the <a href="https://www.univie.ac.at/en/">University of Vienna</a>, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-three-separate-bonobo-populations-nbsp">Three separate bonobo populations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers discovered that three groups of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bonobos-group-cohesion-common-enemy-effect-do-not-kill-inside-their-species/">bonobos</a> have been living separately in different regions of Central Africa for tens of thousands of years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Using genetic tests, the researchers confirmed previous evidence suggesting that these groups originate from central, western, and far-western regions of the bonobo range.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By quantifying the differences between these groups, the research team found that they can be as distinct from one another as the most closely related <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-mean-chimpanzees-fare-better-in-life-than-nice-ones/">chimpanzee</a> subspecies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bonobos-our-endangered-relatives">Bonobos: Our endangered relatives</h2>



<p>Bonobos, commonly seen as the peace-loving primate, are, together with chimpanzees, the closest living relatives to humans, with our genomes differing from theirs by only one percent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite this close relationship, bonobos are endangered, with about 20,000 individuals alive in the wild.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They are also the most understudied great apes, as they live exclusively in the Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where social unrest has constrained research activities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-social-behaviors-of-bonobos-nbsp">Unique social behaviors of bonobos&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Bonobos are a fascinating species, very closely related to humans, with unique patterns of social behavior,” said co-first author Sojung Han, a scientist at the University of Vienna.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“They live in tight <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-animals-interact-within-social-groups/">social groups</a> which, despite some conflicts, are markedly peaceful and egalitarian. Interestingly, males stay in their birth social group while females migrate across groups, but females still form close alliances and can have higher dominance than males.”</p>



<p>The research team analyzed the genomic data of 30 bonobos born in the wild but now living in captivity. They sequenced the exomes (the protein-coding part of the genome) of 20 individuals residing in an African sanctuary and analyzed the full <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genome-mapping-completed-for-dozens-of-common-animals/">genomes</a> of 10 other bonobos.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the exact regions of origin within the Congo Basin for each bonobo were not always certain, the researchers cross-referenced their dataset with previously published mitochondrial DNA data collected from 136 wild bonobos to create a comprehensive picture of genetic diversity across the species' range.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-endangered-bonobos-populations-nbsp">Endangered bonobos populations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers estimated that the central group diverged from the other two groups approximately 145,000 years ago, with the two western groups diverging around 60,000 years ago, showing little mixing between the groups since then.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Bonobos may be even more vulnerable than previously thought, as their population actually consists of at least three smaller populations, some of which may historically have been amongst the smallest across similar primates,” said study senior author Aida Andrés, an expert in genetics at UCL.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In order to survive, every species needs sufficient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-trees-protect-their-genetic-diversity-for-millions-of-years/">genetic diversity</a> to adapt to a changing environment, and for bonobos, losing one of these three groups would be a devastating loss to the total genetic diversity of the species.”</p>



<p>According to Andrés, it is vital that all three groups of bonobos are conserved in order to protect this fascinating and charismatic species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-conservation-efforts">Implications for conservation efforts</h2>



<p>The researchers advocate that the genetic differences between bonobo groups should be further studied and considered in conservation strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This includes habitat preservation, translocations, or potential reintroductions, especially if individuals are adapted to specific environments.</p>



<p>“Unlike modern humans, who are spread all over the world, bonobos are limited to the Congo basin, but our work shows that there are indeed genetic differences between groups,” said Han.&nbsp;</p>



<p>:This is exciting, and it will be very interesting to study, in the future, if there are any differential adaptations among these groups.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genomes-of-endangered-bonobos">Genomes of endangered bonobos </h2>



<p>According to study co-author Cesare de Filippo from the Max Planck Institute, this work demonstrates how studying the genomes of endangered species can help better understand their populations and eventually aid conservation efforts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Even the genomes of captive individuals can help us, sometimes, understand their wild populations. Our findings show the vulnerability of bonobos as an endangered species, and stress the need to protect their environment to ensure their conservation,” said de Filippo.</p>



<p>This groundbreaking genetic study highlights the critical need to preserve all three distinct bonobo populations to maintain the species' genetic diversity and adaptability.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As one of humanity's closest relatives, understanding and protecting bonobos not only aids in their conservation but also enriches our knowledge of primate evolution and social behavior.</p>

<p>More than half of North American bat species teeter on the brink of extinction. This shocking reality was revealed in the North American Bat Conservation Alliance's (NABCA) 2023 report.</p>



<p>A companion study, co-authored by Bat Conservation International (BCI) scientists, involved more than 100 experts from Canada, the United States, and Mexico.</p>



<p>With such international cooperation, the research provides the most exhaustive assessment of our bat species, crafting a baseline to track future trends and initiate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-bat-appreciation-day-the-crucial-role-of-bats-in-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation actions</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-bat-extinction-trend">Alarming bat extinction trend</h2>



<p>“It’s nothing short of alarming that over half of North America’s bat species are at serious risk of collapse and need urgent conservation action,” said Dr. Winifred Frick, Chief Scientist at BCI. </p>



<p>“One of the clearest outcomes of this research is that many threats can only be addressed through international collaboration, since <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/disappearance-of-bats-linked-to-a-rise-in-infant-deaths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a> and the threats they face do not recognize political borders.”</p>



<p>According to Dr. Jeremy Coleman of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the State of the Bats study&nbsp;highlights the variety and severity of the threats that North American bats face on the landscape today.</p>



<p>“The results further emphasize the importance of robust collaborative international partnerships like the White-nose Syndrome Response Team and the North American Bat Conservation Alliance for managing complex wildlife conservation challenges," said Dr. Coleman. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extinction-threats-to-bats">Extinction threats to bats</h2>



<p>The experts pointed out major impacts on the threatened bat species. These impacts range from climate change to wind energy production and diseases.</p>



<p>“This one-of-a-kind, multi-expert assessment is a novel and robust approach to optimizing conservation efforts across North America," said Dr. Rodrigo A. Medellín from the Instituto de Ecología, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. </p>



<p>"The results of the State of the Bats initiative addresses a specific need expressed by the federal governments of Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Mexico looks forward to using these results to inform its own conservation efforts and improve its endangered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-can-ramp-up-their-heart-rate-to-900-beats-per-minute/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> lists.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-matter-of-immediate-concern">A matter of immediate concern</h2>



<p>The study shows that over half of North American bat species face a moderate to very high risk of extinction in the next 15 years. The research also highlights that the populations of 90% of North American bat species have dwindled over the past 15 years.</p>



<p>This makes conservation action a matter of immediate concern for all three countries. Furthermore, about a quarter of North American bat species have transnational ranges, enhancing the need for international collaboration on conservation planning.</p>



<p>Climate change emerges as the top threat to North American bats. White-nose syndrome is a major threat too, with twelve species known to be susceptible.</p>



<p>“We tend to focus on the wildlife we know are at the greatest risk,” said Dr. Amanda Adams, Director of Research Coordination at <a href="https://www.batcon.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bat Conservation International</a>.</p>



<p>“But when we work to address the bigger picture, such as through habitat restoration projects, we end up helping more than just those species that are the most imperiled.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moving-forward">Moving forward</h2>



<p>Ultimately, this research will guide conservation priorities to support the recovery of bat species in North America.</p>



<p>The study also highlights how international unity can address common threats, and marks areas of concern for biodiversity.</p>



<p>“International cooperation is essential to ensure effective conservation of bats in North America," said Charles Francis, manager of the Wildlife Monitoring Assessment for Canadian Wildlife Service.</p>



<p>"This collaborative study to evaluate the status of each species provides critical information to identify the species most in need of conservation measures."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saving-bats-from-extinction">Saving bats from extinction</h2>



<p>Looking to the future, strategic steps must be taken to ensure the sustainable recovery of bat populations across North America. </p>



<p>It is imperative to continue building and strengthening international alliances that prioritize data sharing, joint research endeavors, and synchronized conservation strategies. </p>



<p>Research into innovative solutions, such as the integration of renewable energy technologies with wildlife conservation practices, holds promise for mitigating some of the adverse impacts associated with wind energy production. </p>



<p>Also, promoting a societal shift toward greater environmental stewardship and awareness can create a supportive landscape for the myriad of species, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-type-of-parallel-evolution-found-in-island-bats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a>, that underscore the health and functionality of our ecosystems. </p>



<p>The commitment to protecting these vital creatures from extinction will yield far-reaching benefits for both biodiversity and humanity.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. <p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
