More than half a billion years ago, a tiny ancestor of today’s arthropods scuttled along the floor of a shallow sea in what’s now Yunnan, China. It had large grasping arms, stalked eyes, and a surprisingly modern-looking brain tucked into a head barely wider than the tip of a pencil.



Now, a new look at this ancient fossil - Jianfengia multisegmentalis - is reshaping what scientists thought they knew about how these animals first branched into two major evolutionary paths.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arthropods-rule-the-world">Arthropods rule the world</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-think-insects-will-become-a-sustainable-food-source/">Insects</a>, spiders, crabs, centipedes - all of them are arthropods. This massive group includes more than a million known species. 



Arthropods live everywhere: in the ocean, on land, in the air, and even inside of other animals. Their tough exoskeletons, segmented bodies, and jointed legs have helped them survive and thrive for over 500 million years.



But one big puzzle has remained: where exactly did the two main branches of arthropods come from?



On one side, you have mandibulates - creatures like insects, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-invasive-crustacean-species-discovered-in-the-mediterranean/">crustaceans</a>, and millipedes, which have antennae and use jaws (or mandibles) to eat. On the other hand, chelicerates - spiders, scorpions, and horseshoe crabs - have fangs or pincers instead of jaws.



Until now, scientists weren’t sure when or how these two groups split. That’s where Jianfengia comes in.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-fossil-that-tells-a-different-story">A fossil that tells a different story</h2>



At first, Jianfengia was thought to belong to a group called megacheirans, meaning “large hands” in Greek. 



These extinct animals had long, claw-like limbs sticking out from their heads - similar to the claws of modern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/horseshoe-crabs-view-the-world-through-compound-eyes/">horseshoe crabs</a>. Because of that, scientists had placed them in the chelicerate group.



But when researchers took a closer look at the fossilized brain of Jianfengia, they noticed something didn’t add up.



The research team, led by the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a>, reconstructed the nervous system from four well-preserved specimens. 



What they found was unexpected: a brain that looked a lot like that of a modern shrimp or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bright-coloration-in-crayfish-does-not-serve-an-evolutionary-purpose/">crayfish</a>. It even had features seen in simple freshwater crustaceans, like brine shrimp - the kind sold as “sea monkeys.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ancestors-of-antennae">The ancestors of antennae </h2>



“These megacheirans didn't have antennules, which are antenna-like appendages that are common to crustaceans, insects and centipedes,” said lead researcher Nicholas Strausfeld, a professor in the U of A Department of Neuroscience. 



“Instead we see these strange, quite sturdy head appendages that were specialized for reaching and clasping things.”



Turns out, those big “claws” weren’t early versions of spider fangs after all. Instead, they were likely the ancestors of antennae - the kind found in today’s insects and crustaceans.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seeing-with-ancient-eyes">Seeing with ancient eyes</h2>



Jianfengia’s head was only about 0.08 inches wide, but it packed in a lot of sensory power. It had stalked compound eyes, like those of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/do-crabs-and-lobsters-have-emotions-and-feelings/">crabs</a>, plus at least three single-lens eyes - the simple kind also seen in many modern arthropods.



In one fossil, the researchers even looked inside the compound eyes and saw fossilized cone cells that once supported light-sensitive parts of the eye. 



“What we saw was unexpected: the brain looks really modern, comparable to that of a living crustacean,” Strausfeld said.



This level of detail is almost never seen in fossils this old. Soft tissues like brains usually break down long before they can fossilize. But thanks to the fine-grained rock and lucky conditions in this ancient seabed, a few rare specimens kept their delicate neural features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-cousins-go-separate-ways">Ancient cousins go separate ways</h2>



Another fossil - Alalcomenaeus - also belonged to the megacheiran group and had similar body parts. However, it turned out to be quite different on the inside. Its brain looked more like that of Limulus, the horseshoe crab, which is a chelicerate.



So even though these two creatures looked similar on the outside, their brains revealed that they were actually early members of different arthropod groups. One led to modern crustaceans and insects. The other led to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-species-joro-spiders-has-invaded-the-united-states-heres-what-to-look-for/">spiders</a> and scorpions.



“Many repeats of these comparisons revealed that in the arthropod tree of life, Jianfengia sat at or near the root of all mandibulates, whereas its putative cousin, Alalcomenaeus, has the same status, but within the chelicerate branch of the tree of life,” said co-author David Andrew of Lycoming College.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-same-tools-different-outcomes">Same tools, different outcomes</h2>



The key body part in all of this are the large claws sticking out of the head. Over hundreds of millions of years, evolution shaped them into very different things.



“In chelicerates, these ‘great appendages’ shrunk, so they eventually became the spider fangs,” said Strausfeld. “In mandibulates, evolution modified them into segmented antennules.”



Some tiny marine crustaceans alive today - called ostracods - still have antennules tipped with claspers, offering living proof of this evolutionary transition.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arthropods-from-the-inside-out">Arthropods from the inside out</h2>



Looking at a creature’s shell or limbs can tell scientists part of the story. But to really understand where an animal fits in the family tree, the brain may offer better clues.



“Our results demonstrate that close examination of fossilized neural remains can provide powerful data indicating evolutionary relationships impossible to obtain just from features of the exoskeleton,” Strausfeld said. 



“One needs to know what to look for in the fossil brain because it tells us a lot about a fossil’s identity.”



Frank Hirth, a co-author from King’s College London, noted that the organization of their fossilized brains perfectly aligns with that of living arthropods, suggesting that their ancient constituents are extraordinarily robust, yet diverse.



This may explain why arthropods are the most successful inhabitants of this planet, said Hirth.



Ultimately, the tiny brain of a long-dead sea creature has helped scientists solve one of the oldest mysteries in animal evolution - where the arthropod family tree began to branch.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-62849-w">Nature Communications</a>.

Tiny fossil rewrites the giant arthropod family tree

Researchers have learned of a creative mating ritual that is unique to Costa's hummingbirds. According to the study, male Costa's perform a strategic dive during which they “sing” to females using their tail feathers.


While other hummingbird species plunge in front of potential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/friendly-bonobos-aggressive-mating/">mates</a>, Costa's perform their dives to the side of females. Scientists at the <a href="http://www.ucr.edu/">University of California, Riverside</a> (UCR) have found that this trajectory minimizes an audible Doppler sound that is generated by the dive.

The researchers believe that the males are manipulating the way females perceive their performances by minimizing the Doppler sound. Without this noise, females cannot acoustically detect the speed of the movements.

Study lead author Christopher Clark is an assistant professor of Biology in UCR's <a href="http://admissions.ucr.edu/academics/college-of-natural-and-agricultural-sciences-cnas.html">College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences</a>.


“Recent studies in birds and other animals suggest that females prefer higher speeds during male athletic displays,” explained Professor Clark. “By concealing their speed, males are not necessarily cheating, but instead have evolved this placement of trajectory out of female choice.”

Along with co-author Emily Mistick, Professor Clark determined that males direct their sound toward potential mates by twisting their tail vertically by up to 90 degrees. Previously, Professor Clark had demonstrated that the tail song is made by the rapid flapping of the outer tail feathers.

“We don't know why males twist only half of their tails toward the females, but it may be due to anatomical limitations that prevent them from twisting their whole tail around,” he explained.

The researchers used an acoustic camera to document Costa's dives. In addition, they conducted experiments in a wind tunnel to investigate how the speed and direction of the birds may alter the sounds that they produce.

This is when they discovered that it was difficult to measure the velocity of the Costa's plunge in relation to the correlating sound.

“Once I realized it wasn't trivial for a scientist to measure, I realized it wouldn't be trivial for a female to measure either,” said Clark. He explained that the findings add to a growing collection of studies which demonstrate how male animals use athletic displays to draw potential mates.

“Most research has focused on static male attributes, such as bright colors or elongated tails, but our research shows that dynamic displays may be just as important, and males strategically control these performances to show themselves in the best possible light,” said Clark.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

Researchers have learned of a creative mating ritual that is...

Droughts are predicted to become more frequent and more intense in many regions of the world, and researchers are reporting that droughts will have an increasing impact on bees. 

A field experiment conducted by scientists at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a> demonstrated that drought roughly halved the overall number of flowers. This is a substantial reduction in the amount of food available for bees and other pollinators.

“The plants we examined responded to drought in various ways, from producing fewer flowers to producing flowers that contained no nectar,” said lead researcher Ben Phillips.  

“But overall there was a very clear reduction in the number of flowers that were available - and obviously this means less food for flower-visiting insects such as bees.”


<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hive-bound-bees-pesticides/">Bees</a> are already facing a number of threats including the spread of diseases and alien species, habitat loss, and exposure to harmful pesticides.

“Not only are these insects vital as pollinators of crops and wild plants, but they also provide food for many birds and mammals,” said co-lead author Dr. Ros Shaw.

The study was focused on three species of flowering plants on chalk grassland, which is an important habitat for UK pollinator species.

“Previous studies of the impacts of drought on flowers and bees have looked at individual species, often in the laboratory, but we used an experiment with rain shelters to examine the effects on real communities of plant species living in chalk grassland,” said study co-author Dr Ellen Fry.

“The level of drought that we looked at was calculated to be a rare event, but with climate change such droughts are expected to become much more common.”


The researchers warned that the results of this investigation are most likely applicable to other regions and habitats in addition to chalk grasslands.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/13652486">Global Change Biology</a>.

Droughts found to be a growing threat for bee populations

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pesticides-bumblebees-buzzing/">Neonicotinoid pesticides</a> are toxic to bees and hinder their pollinating and harvesting abilities. 

Foragers, the bees that travel beyond the hive to collect pollen and nectar, are directly exposed to neonicotinoids and herbicides, but what happens when the exposed honeybees bring pesticide particles back to the hive? 

Researchers from the <a href="http://www.uba.ar/">Universidad de Buenos Aires</a> in Argentina set out to examine how neonicotinoids affected worker bees in the hive who might come in contact with pesticides while brushing past foragers and handling contaminated honey and pollen. 

The results of the study, published in the <a href="http://jeb.biologists.org/content/221/7/jeb176644">Journal of Experimental Biology</a>, reveal the detrimental and stunting effects that a lifelong exposure to pesticides has on worker bees. 

The researchers tested the effects of neonicotinoids and glysophates, both of which are used to eradicate weeds and pests, on worker bees. 

Learning sweet flavors is a key part of the worker bee’s function and role within the colony. 

Once young worker bees emerged from the brood comb, the researchers fed them pollen and syrup that was dosed with imidacloprid (a neonicotinoid insecticide), glyphosate or a combination of the two. The concentrations of the doses were only what the bees would encounter in the wild. 

When the bees reached 5, 9 and 14 days of age, the researchers conducted experiments in order to assess the bees’ sense of taste and learning ability. 

Each bee in the study had to be gently restrained before the researchers touched its antenna with different sugar solutions ranging from .01 percent diluted solution to a thicker syrup. Data was collected on when the bee started tasting the solution and recognizing it as sweet. 

The researchers found that exposure to the pesticides had diminished the bees’ sense of taste. 

Bees that had come in contact with glyphosate and neonicotinoids were only able to recognize the sugar solution when it was in stronger concentrations, 30 percent or more. The unexposed bees could sense sweet in ten percent sugar solutions. 

As the bees got older, the researchers attempted to train them to stick out their tongues or proboscis when they smelled a sweet scent.

Those who had not been exposed to pesticides were immediately able to learn the trick, while those who had been given contaminated pollen and nectar had difficulty with the task no matter what age they were. 

Several other learning experiments had similar results. 

The study showed that even bees who aren’t in direct contact with pesticides are affected by neonicotinoids and this can place entire hives in jeopardy. 

“The presence of hive bees that are unable to taste the sweetness of food or discriminate between scents will worsen the efficiency of beehives as a whole, possibly reducing the efficiency of pollination and honey production,” said Walter Farina, a co-author of the study.

Even hive-bound bees get handicapped by pesticides

An international team of researchers have successfully modeled the coloring of 200-million-year-old insect fossils trapped in amber. As a result, it may now be possible to know the colors of ancient insects of which only fossils remain.

The study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="http://english.nigpas.cas.cn/">Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology (NIGP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, along with colleagues in Germany, China, and the UK, and was published in the journal Science Advances. 

Determining the color of Trichoptera fossils trapped in Burmese amber that date back to the mid-<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/terrifying-dinosaur-ruled-patagonia/">Cretaceous period</a> might seem like an impossible feat.

However, the researchers knew that the specimens’ scales were structurally colored rather than the result of pigmentation. 

Structural colors are common among butterflies and moths in the Lepidoptera order, and species in this order have some of the most diverse structural coloring produced by any insect. 

As opposed to colors produced with pigmentation, structural coloring results from light interacting with skin, scales, or surface of a plant or animal. As the light hits the surface, complex structures within the cells produces different, vibrant colors. 

Structural colors provide a number of functions including camouflage, warning predators and attracting potential mates. 

Science has long been fascinated with structural coloring, but the history and evolution of structural coloring among lepidopterans has not been thoroughly investigated and is poorly understood. 

The researchers examined the structural scale architecture of fossilized Jurassic Lepidoptera. 

Different types of microscopes were used on the fossils in order to better understand the framework and morphology of the scales. 

Jurassic lepidopterans have a bilayer scale where the upper layer consists of large fused cover scales and the lower layer has small fused ground scales. It’s a similar structure to some living moths today known as Micropterigidae. 

The symmetrical and repetitive structure within the cells allows light to scatter and creates the structural coloring. 

In this case, the researchers used optical modeling to show that the Jurassic Lepidoptera’s coloring would have taken on metallic hues. 

The study also provided insight into the early evolution of lepidopteran scales. 

It now may be possible to model the structural coloring of other lepidopterans in future studies as researchers work to learn more about these complex evolutionary processes within butterflies and moths.

How to determine the true color of ancient insects and animals

An international team of researchers have successfully modeled the coloring...

When researchers assess a species’ risk of becoming endangered or even going <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/north-american-species-extinction/">extinct</a>, they consider many factors including current populations, habitat, anthropogenic or human interference, genetic diversity, and resilience and adaptability.

Now, scientists from the <a href="https://naturalhistory.si.edu/">Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History</a> have discovered that sexual traits should also be considered when looking at a species’ potential for extinction. 

The study, published in the journal Nature, shows how certain species who have exaggerated features specifically to attract a mate may have a higher risk of extinction. 

Sexual dimorphism is common in the animal kingdom, from the colorful plumage of many male birds to the giant stature and trunk shaped nose of the male elephant seal which enables them to emit sonorous mating calls. 

These features and behaviors give the male an advantage when seeking a mate, but the new Smithsonian study found that these extravagant displays in the name of reproduction also come at a cost. 

For the study, the researchers along with collaborators from the <a href="https://www.wm.edu/">College of William and Mary</a> and the <a href="https://home.usm.edu/">University of Southern Mississippi </a>collected, reviewed, and analyzed thousands of ancient fossils of crustaceans. 

With fossils, it can be difficult to discern if the specimen is male or female because so many biological markers are not there, but with ostracods, the distinction is easy to make because their shell shapes determine their sex. 

Ostracods are tiny crustaceans that have been around for millions of years. They live in shells smaller than a poppyseed and males have an elongated shell and body. The females, on the other hand, have a squatter shape. 

The researchers reviewed 93 different ostracod species that lived during the late Cretaceous period in order to see if prominent sexual dimorphism made the crustaceans more vulnerable to changes in their environments. 

The results showed that the size and shape of the males did have an influence on the species longevity. Some of the species persisted through a 20 million year-span while others only lasted a few thousand years. 

“We showed that when males are larger and more elongated than the females, those species tend to not last as long in the fossil record. They have a higher risk of extinction,” said Gene Hunt, a  paleontologist who led the research. 

The researchers theorize that because some males devote so much time and energy into increasing their odds of getting a mate, it comprises other evolutionary processes that help with resilience and adaptability. 

The results of the study suggest that biologists and researchers should take sexual dimorphism into account when assessing risks to biodiversity. 

“If devoting so much energy to reproduction made it harder for species in the past to adapt to changing circumstances, perhaps that same should apply to species we're concerned about conserving in the present day,” said Hunt.

Colorful plumage attracts mates but increases extinction risk

A new study from the <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au/">University of Adelaide</a> has found that future levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean will make it difficult for baby fish to reach safety, which will threaten the stability of fish populations.

The researchers observed barramundi larvae in water with high levels of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-emissions-energy-costs/">CO2</a> and found that the hatchlings turned away from ocean noises that would normally attract them to a safe shelter. Instead, they were drawn to sounds from the wrong habitats and to artificial noise.

“The oceans are far from silent environments; they harbor many noisy animals, for example snapping shrimps and whales and dolphins,” said lead author Professor Ivan Nagelkerken.

“Oceanic larvae (hatchlings or baby fish) from quite a few species of fishes and invertebrates listen to sounds of coastal ecosystems. They use these sounds to guide them from the open ocean, where they hatch, to a sheltered home in shallow waters, where they can spend their juvenile and adult lives.”

“Unfortunately the CO2 that humans are pumping into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels gets absorbed by the ocean and causes acidification, and this causes changes to the behavior of many marine animals.”

The study was focused on barramundi larvae in marine tanks with levels of CO2 that are consistent with those expected by the end of the century. They compared the activity of the baby fish to the responses of barramundi larvae that were exposed to current CO2 levels.

“In our study we found that while larvae of barramundi are attracted to the sounds of tropical estuaries, larvae raised under future ocean conditions with elevated CO2 were deterred by these natural sounds,” explained Professor Nagelkerken. “Moreover, under elevated CO2, larval barramundi were attracted to the wrong sounds.” 

Noises found on cold water reefs and artificial sounds or “white noise” demanded the attention of the larvae in heavily acidified water. According to study co-author Professor Sean Connell, this means that the larvae could end up in the wrong habitats and in places where they cannot survive.

“Fewer larvae are arriving in coastal ecosystems, estuaries and rivers could result in smaller population sizes and, in the case of commercial species like barramundi, this could have a significant impact on fisheries, whether it be commercial or recreational,” explained Professor Connell.

“The research also raises questions about future fish populations in areas with unnatural sounds. Will some species be more attracted, for example, to areas where there are a lot of human structures and sounds in and under the water, such as harbours and oil platforms, in the future?”

The study is published in the Nature journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/srep/">Scientific Reports</a>.

Rising ocean acidity is threatening the survival of baby fish

Researchers at Virginia Tech's <a href="https://cnre.vt.edu/">College of Natural Resources and Environment</a> have found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cheetah-quickly-vanishing-planet/">cheetahs</a> have adopted different strategies to deal with threats from other predators during feeding time. Some cheetahs eat their prey as quickly as possible, while mothers with cubs watch out for any danger while the juveniles eat. 

Cheetahs live alongside bigger carnivores such as lions and spotted hyenas. The larger carnivores are known to attack cheetah cubs and steal prey from the adults.

While leopards can drag their prey high up into trees away from scavengers, cheetahs do not have the strength to do this. Cheetahs are also physically unable to defend themselves against lions, which is why they often hunt when larger predators are less active.

The research team analyzed 35 years of observations involving 159 cheetahs in the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania. The experts wanted to investigate how the eating behavior of cheetahs is affected by larger predators.

The study revealed that the feeding strategy used by the cheetahs depends on the type of threat they are guarding against. The main threat faced by single females and males is having their food stolen, so they spend less time watching out for attacks and more time eating as quickly as possible. The primary concern of mother cheetahs, on the other hand, is keeping their young safe.

“Instead of speed, mothers use vigilance to minimize risk,” explained lead author Anne Hilborn. “They spend more time paused before eating, perhaps also to catch their breath, and are more vigilant. This increases the amount of time they spend eating, which in turn increases their overall handling time.”

According to the researchers, the feeding behavior of cheetahs also depends on their location. In a territory with fewer lions or hyenas present, mothers may be less alert and observant during a meal with their cubs.

The study is published in Springer's journal <a href="https://link.springer.com/journal/265">Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology</a>.

Cheetahs strategize to dodge larger predators while they eat

Researchers at <a href="https://www.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en/">Kyoto University</a> have found that sea urchin populations are more vulnerable to human activities than what was previously thought. An observational study that spanned 50 years has revealed that algal blooms and fluctuating water temperatures have significantly impacted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-urchins-erode-reef/">sea urchins</a> and have led to abnormal larvae development.

Sea urchins are commonly found in shallow water, and this makes them more susceptible to human influences. Sea urchins are ecological drivers that can affect the dynamics of entire marine communities due to the fact that they eat seaweed and experience large population fluctuations.

Continuous long-term monitoring is needed to examine ecological changes so that their causes can be identified. The study was focused on three common species of sea urchins located at a marine reserve in Japan's Hatakejima Island from 1963 to 2014. The team conducted surveys of the area every year, and also conducted six surveys of the entire coast.

The patterns that emerged throughout the course of the study were found to be similar in all three species. The researchers found large numbers of sea urchins in the 1960s and 1970s, sharp declines in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and a recovery in the late 1990s.

The experts also discovered that algal bloom, ocean current, and warm winter ocean temperatures all contributed to the sizes of the sea urchin populations. In addition, each species was found to be affected by different conditions. In one species, algal bloom was linked to abnormal larvae development.


“Our study is the longest of its kind into sea urchin populations, and demonstrates the importance of monitoring impacts of environmental stressors and addressing the mechanisms of changes in the abundance of not only sea urchins but other marine creatures,” said study co-author Tomoyuki Nakano.

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/ecological-indicators">Ecological Indicators</a>.

As far as the natural world is concerned, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/us-mexico-border-wall-threaten-100-endangered-species/">international borders</a> are just lines drawn on a map.  Abstract. A wall is a way to manifest an unnatural idea. 

Jaguars perhaps most famously often cross the fluid border between the US and Mexico.  Fish seem to wander at will along the very fluid border set by the Rio Grande between Texas and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Tamaulipas.

Of course it’s little different with people.  Native American tribes such as the Tohono O’odham and Yaqui have lived on both sides of the US-Mexico border since before either country existed, often travelling across the not yet existing border.  Today the reality hasn’t changed much, with many tribes crossing the borders for ceremonies, work or simply to visit family members and friends. 

The truth of the ecological unity between the United States of America and Mexico is shown quite clearly in the lands protected by governments on both sides of the border.  

Organ Pipe National Monument is a desert park taking up 330,689 acres of land on the southern border of Arizona and Mexico.  95% of the land in Organ Pipe is set aside as wilderness area. From peaks inside Organ Pipe National Monument, you can look across the border into Mexico and see El Picante y Gran Desierto de Altar.  El Picante y Gran Desierto de Altar is considerably larger than the US Organ Pipe, measuring approximately 1,765,731 acres. Organ Pipe also partners with Delta de Rio Colorado and Alto Golfo de California in Mexico for management.  The landscape of broken volcanic geology and spare desert vegetation is common to Organ Pipe as well as El Picante y Gran Desierto de Altar. Sonoran Pronghorn are monitored by staff in both desert parks. The parks on the coast in Mexico share water from the Colorado River originating in the US.  

Of course, the border is a stark reality to humans on both sides of it.  In the 90s, border security in urban areas increased dramatically; forcing Mexicans seeking a better life, and illegal smuggling operations into the desert to cross into the US.  According to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/">The Guardian</a>, border patrol intercepted about 23 people in Organ Pipe National Monument per day in 2015.  The remains of 129 people who crossed the border illegally were found in the desert of southern Arizona in 2014.       

The reality of Organ Pipe National Monument has changed radically in recent decades.  In 2002 Kris Eggle, a Park Law Enforcement Officer, was killed by members of a drug cartel fleeing Mexico.  The murder prompted closing the majority of the park, an order that remained largely in effect for almost 11 years.  When the park completely reopened to the public in 2014, it was with a very different face. <a href="https://www.hcn.org/">High Country News</a> reported that the park in 2014 had 20 law enforcement officers compared to 5 in 2003.  Likewise, Border Patrol agents increased 20-fold to a total of over 500. The park is now said to be safe for tourists.

Big Bend National Park in Texas shares a border with Mexico for 118 miles says the National Park Service website.  On the same website, under the heading of ‘Safety Advice’ is a recommendation: 

“People in distress may ask for food, water, or other assistance. It is recommended that you do not make contact with them, but note the location, and immediately notify park rangers. Lack of water is a life-threatening emergency in the desert.”

It’s clear from the context that this refers to illegal immigrants from Mexico.  Elsewhere on the website, the subject of border merchants is broached. On the U.S. side of the border, tourist items such as walking sticks and bracelets are left for sale by Mexican merchants.  The website says buying these items encourages illegal crossing of the river which may lead to incarceration. 

According to <a href="https://www.npr.org/">NPR</a>, The Big Bend Sector of the border has had the lowest apprehension rate of illegal crossers annually for the last 44 years.  The inhospitable terrain might be the reason why. Unlike in the Sonoran desert, the terrain of Big Bend might keep many from even trying to cross into the US, outside of border merchants.

In Big Bend, the Rio Grande River which already forms a natural border between US and Mexico is also of supreme importance to wildlife.  A potential border wall could kill animals searching for a drink in the arid Chihuahuan Desert. Black Bears, Mountain Lions, Big Horn Sheep, Coyotes, and Coati all live in the park.  Wildlife doesn’t respect borders and needs freedom to move for survival, especially in demanding desert regions. 

Bordering Big Bend National Park on the Mexico side are Cañón de Santa Elena Flora and Fauna Protection Area and Maderas Del Carmen Biosphere Reserve, both of which are sister parks to Big Bend.  As sister parks, the managing agencies of the parks in the US and Mexico work together on things such as wildlife monitoring on both sides of the border. All together, the two Mexican protected areas and the one in the US make up The Big Bend Conservation Corridor Initiative, protecting more than 3 million acres, an area Wikipedia notes, as large as the US state of Connecticut.  As the name corridor implies, the area has been set aside partially to enable migration of wildlife north to south through the border region. 

At the turn of the last century, Black Bears were said to be common in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park.  Ranchers, hunters and federal predator control agents put an end to Black Bears in the Big Bend region. By 1944 when Big Bend National Park was established, there were virtually no Black Bears at all.

In the 1980s bears made a comeback in Big Bend, journeying across the deserts of Mexico, swimming the Rio Grande a female from Sierra Del Carmen crossed even more desert in Texas to re-establish her species in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend once again.  Without the corridor left intact between the US and Mexico, Black Bears could never have come back to Big Bend. 

So far, the president and his cabinet have said that Big Bend won’t be a place where an actual border wall will be built.  

All along the border, parks and preserves in the US partner with those in Mexico to protect the land and wildlife common to both.  Chiricahua National Monument, Saguaro National Park, Coronado National Memorial all in Arizona have sister Parks in Mexico. White Sands National Monument in New Mexico partners with Cuatrocienagas Biosphere Reserve to develop shared inventory and monitoring programs.  Besides Big Bend in Texas, Padre Island National Seashore also partners with a Biosphere Reserve and a National Park in Mexico. 

Beyond parks, projects such as the Northern Jaguar Project bridge the international border between the US and Mexico.  Monarch Butterflies that pollinate millions of flowers in the US winter in Mexico, where tourists flock to see magical clouds of the insect.  

It’s easy to forget that nature works as a whole and isn’t divided by artificial boundaries drawn on the map so human can cut the world into chunks easily used for human purposes.  For now, the border between US and Mexico remains fluid in many areas.

Boozing beetles? How alcohol helps them thrive. Researchers have learned why alcohol attracts certain beetles and the important symbiotic relationships these beetles have to their fungi crops and habitat. 

Ambrosia beetles are not an uncommon site in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/beer-was-brewed-in-central-europe-6000-years-ago/">beer</a> gardens when they sometimes take a dive into a person’s glass and now, a new study explains why alcohol attracts the insects. 

The study was conducted by researchers from the<a href="https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/ueber/university/"> University of Wuerzburg</a>, the <a href="https://www.ice.mpg.de/">Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology</a>, <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">Ohio State University</a> and the <a href="https://www.hfm.tum.de/index.php?id=hfmtumde&amp;L=1">Wood Research Institute of the Technical University of Munich</a>. 

Published in the journal PNAS, the findings discuss how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-alcohol-heart-rate/">alcohol</a> plays an important role in the formation of fungi that ambrosia beetles depend on. Boozing beetles? How alcohol helps them thrive 

Ambrosia beetles are a group of bark beetles with several thousand species and ambrosia beetles are able to cultivate fungi. The beetles grow the fungi and feed off of it. 

The researchers set out to determine what it is about alcohol that draws the insects and how it impacts their agricultural efforts. 

“It has long been known that alcohol is produced by weakened trees and that these trees are recognized and colonized by ambrosia beetles,” said  Peter Biedermann, a co-author of the study. “And often you will find the roughly two millimeter long beetles in glasses of beer, when a beer garden is surrounded by old trees.” 

The researchers studied black timber bark beetles, a species of ambrosia beetle, in order to better understand how alcohol influenced the beetles’ farming. 

Alcohol creates optimal environments that are perfect for the beetles to cultivate fungi and live in. The more food there is, the more offspring there will be among the beetle populations. 

It’s a sustainable system and weeds, a common gardening problem, cannot flourish on bark that has higher levels of alcohol. 

“An increase in the activity of alcohol-degrading enzymes allows the insects' fungi to grow optimally in alcohol-rich wood, while alcohol is toxic to other microorganisms,” said Biedermann. 

“At this level of alcohol, (two percent) the omnipresent molds, which can also be considered the "weeds" of fungal agriculture, only grow weekly and cannot overgrow the fungal gardens,” said Philipp Benz, a fellow researcher. 

Ambrosia beetles are some of nature’s most successful sustainable farmers, according to Benz. 

The researchers also observed complex social behaviors as the beetles took on different tasks to cultivate the fungi. 

Some of the beetles cleaned tunnel systems, others helped clear dirt, and all the beetles seemed to work together with the goal of creating the perfect conditions for the fungi and beetles. 

If a beetle colony moved to another tree, some would bring along spores from their old habitat in order to create new fungal gardens. The spores carried by the beetles can even produce alcohol, which helps with the cultivation in the new tree. 

“Of course, they have to be more resistant to alcohol than other creatures,” said Biedermann. 

“These characteristics are also of high potential interest from a biotechnological point of view since they might be transferable to other systems when better understood,” Benz concluded.

Boozing beetles? How alcohol helps them thrive. Researchers have learned...

As we reported recently, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ichthyosaur-gave-birth-live-young/">a fossil with eight embryos</a> found in Yorkshire England was revealed to be the youngest pregnant ichthyosaur ever discovered. 

The giant aquatic reptile is making headlines again as a 205 million-year-old jawbone first found in 2016 was recently revealed to belong to one of the largest ichthyosaurs ever recorded, measuring up to 26 meters in length. 

The new findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE, also helped solve a 150 old mystery involving dinosaur bones. 

Paul de la Salle, a co-author of the study, first came across the jawbone on a beach in Somerset, England. 

“Initially, the bone just looked like a piece of rock but, after recognizing a groove and bone structure, I thought it might be part of a jaw from an ichthyosaur and immediately contacted ichthyosaur experts Dean Lomax and Prof. Judy Massare who expressed interest in studying the specimen,” said la Salle. “I also contacted Dr. Ramues Gallois, a geologist who visited the site and determined the age of the specimen stratigraphically.”

The fossil was an incomplete bone from the lower jaw of a giant ichthyosaur, according to both Lomax and Massare. 

The fossil was then compared to other ichthyosaur fossils and the researchers even visited the <a href="http://www.tyrrellmuseum.com/">Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology</a>, which houses the largest ichthyosaur fossil, the shastasaurid Shonisaurus sikanniensis. 

The Shonisaurus sikanniensis is 21 meters long and there are many similarities between la Salle’s find and the giant Canadian fossil. 

After comparing the two, the researchers concluded that the new fossil is a giant shastasaurid-like ichthyosaur and larger than the Shonisaurus sikanniensis. 

“As the specimen is represented only by a large piece of jaw, it is difficult to provide a size estimate, but by using a simple scaling factor and comparing the same bone in S. sikanniensis, the Lilstock specimen is about 25% larger,” said Lomax.

The new findings also helped shed light on an old mystery involving large bones reported in 1850. 

The bones were categorized as Late Triassic and found in Aust Cliff in Gloucestershire. The fossils, two of which are missing today, were identified as the limb bones of several dinosaurs and reptiles. 

However, with the jawbone discovered in Somerset, the researchers believe that the old 1850 fossils were misidentified ichthyosaur jaw bone fragments.

Transmissible cancers are cancers that can spread from one animal to another in the same species. Although rare, these types of cancers can be devastating to species populations, as has been evidenced by two transmissible cancers found among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deadly-tasmanian-devil-tumor/">Tasmanian devils</a>. 

In some parts of Tasmania, 90 percent of devils have been wiped out by transmissible cancers. Their continued decline puts the entire Tasmanian ecosystem at risk because of the important role the devils play as scavengers. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> set out to understand what risk factors made Tasmanian devils more susceptible to transmissible cancers than other species. 

“When the first one was discovered, we thought that transmissible cancers were extremely rare and that Tasmanian devils were just really unlucky to get this cancer,” said Elizabeth Murchison, the study’s senior researcher. “But the emergence of the second one made us wonder whether Tasmanian devils might be particularly at risk for developing this kind of disease.”

The results were published in the journal <a href="http://www.cell.com/cancer-cell/fulltext/S1535-6108(18)30117-X">Cancer Cell </a>and show that the transmissible cancers studied may have occurred in Tasmanian devils for a variety of reasons, including a lack of genetic diversity and instinctive biting behaviors among the animals. 

The researchers also identified certain drugs that could help treat and prevent the diseases which could be crucial for the species’ survival. 

Tasmanian devils are known for biting each other in the face when they fight, which turned out to be the way the cancers spread. The wound healing processes may actually motivate the cancer cells to divide and form tumors. 

The two transmissible cancers are similar in origin but likely developed years apart, according to the study. 

The team compared the two cancers using genetic and functional comparison methods in order to see what environmental and human-caused changes might have influenced susceptibility among the Tasmanian devils. 

Although the researchers could not find any genomic markers that explain the spread of the cancers, they did find that the cancers have similar mutational processes and respond to the same drugs. 

“It really pointed to some kind of problem that the devils have with this kind of cell's regulation, which probably gives them a greater risk of developing this type of disease,” said Murchison. 

Other factors that give the Tasmanian devil an unfair disadvantage include a lack of genetic diversity after humans tried to wipe out the species and changed the landscape when the island was first settled. 

“When white people first settled in Tasmania, they'd hear these screams at night. And they thought there must be a devilish creature out there," said Maximilian Stammnitz, the study’s first author. “Their immune systems may be less poised to detect foreign tumor cell grafts, compared to other species that have more genetic diversity.”

The research has important implications both in better understanding transmissible cancers but also in treating and preventing cancers among Tasmanian devils.

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-385-million-year-old-trees-discovered">385-million-year-old trees discovered</h2>



Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Santiago, the capital city of Chile. The city is located in the center of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, which has a population of about eight million people.&nbsp;



'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."



The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.

Lesotho: Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky" Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features northwest Lesotho in South Africa.



According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
