For decades, environmentalists and policymakers have debated two main strategies to boost food production. One is expansion - clearing more land for farms. The other is intensification - increasing the yield on existing farmland through high-input practices like pesticides, fertilizers, and irrigation.



The common belief is that intensification is less damaging to biodiversity. But a new study by researchers at University College London (<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a>) reveals that this assumption may not always hold.



The findings challenge long-held views and call for a more informed, flexible strategy in agricultural policy and conservation. The study invites us to question how food security and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-day-2025-a-global-call-to-protect-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental protection</a> can truly coexist.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farm-expansion-and-intensification">Farm expansion and intensification </h2>



At first glance, farmland intensification seems ideal. It promises more food from the same land, sparing natural ecosystems from conversion. Yet the study led by Dr. Silvia Ceaușu at the UCL Center for Biodiversity &amp; Environment Research suggests a deeper problem.



“Feeding the global human population comes at an increasing cost for our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet</a>'s biodiversity. Our new research highlights that it's actually more complicated than that,” noted Dr. Ceaușu.



Using a large global dataset, the researchers analyzed biodiversity patterns around farms producing maize, wheat, rice, and soybean - crops that make up over half of the world’s calorie intake.



The experts focused on areas where some natural vegetation remained, excluding untouched wildlands. They then assessed biodiversity in terms of species richness, total abundance, and how widespread species were.



The results revealed that both expansion and intensification damage biodiversity, but the extent varies by region, crop type, and existing vegetation. In some areas, intensification harmed local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-biodiversity-scientists-discover-hidden-pattern-guiding-species-distributions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> more than converting new land.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-boosting-farm-yields-can-harm-biodiversity">Boosting farm yields can harm biodiversity</h2>



Much of modern agricultural planning encourages “closing yield gaps,” meaning increasing production in areas where crop yields lag behind their potential. The logic is to reduce the need for land expansion. But this new study shows that doing so may come with serious ecological consequences.



“We show that farmland expansion is indeed drastically changing local biodiversity. However, once agriculture is established, intensifying agricultural practices can further degrade local biodiversity, sometimes more so than by further removing natural vegetation from the area,” noted Dr. Silvia Ceaușu.



This challenges the narrative of intensification as a safe compromise. It also suggests that even well-meaning conservation policies might backfire if they overly favor intensification without context.



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-pressure-is-changing-biodiversity-faster-than-we-realize/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">implications</a> stretch far. International trade agreements often restrict imports from newly converted farmland but welcome goods from intensified farms. That distinction might be too simplistic, especially when intensified farms are located in biodiversity hotspots.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complexity-over-simplicity-in-agricultural-policy">Complexity over simplicity in agricultural policy</h2>



One of the most striking conclusions of the study is that there is no universal rule. Every landscape is different. What works in temperate monocultures may fail in tropical mosaics. This variation makes broad policies difficult to apply effectively.



“Simple suggestions like favoring farmland intensification over expansion are not always effective - there’s no one-size-fits all solution for sustainable agriculture,” noted Professor Tim Newbold at UCL.



Instead of relying on single-solution strategies, policymakers must consider specific ecological, social, and agricultural data. This includes understanding which species are at risk, how ecosystems function locally, and what kind of vegetation remains around farms.



It’s not just about where and how we farm - but also about what lives nearby, and what might disappear as farming intensifies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farm-practices-reshape-biodiversity-over-time">Farm practices reshape biodiversity over time</h2>



Beyond ecological damage, the study touches on evolutionary consequences. As intensified agriculture becomes more common, it reshapes entire ecosystems. 



Only species that can adapt to altered environments survive. Over time, this selects for generalist traits - those that thrive in simplified, human-managed landscapes.



This process, described in the study as a shift in "evolutionary filters," could gradually lead to less diverse and more homogenized wildlife communities. 



Specialists, who depend on complex, intact ecosystems, are the first to vanish. This affects not only biodiversity statistics but also ecosystem function and resilience.



In intensified landscapes, nature becomes simpler. And while simple might seem efficient for farming, it rarely is for ecology.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-farmland-use">Rethinking farmland use </h2>



While the researchers don’t endorse farmland expansion into untouched habitats, they do caution against assuming that intensification is always benign. In certain contexts, expansion into already degraded or marginal lands could do less harm than squeezing more output from heavily farmed areas



“There is likely a balance that can be struck between intensification and expansion… informed by local and crop-specific data,” noted co-author David Leclère of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (<a href="https://iiasa.ac.at" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IIASA</a>), Austria.



The goal isn’t to choose one path but to design farming systems that work for both people and the planet.



“We would not suggest expanding farmland into intact natural areas as it is vital for the planet that such unmodified landscapes are preserved,” said Dr. Newbold.



In other words, any new expansion must avoid primary forests, wetlands, and biodiversity-rich habitats. The challenge lies in identifying and managing lower-risk landscapes while avoiding additional intensification that might push ecosystems past recovery.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-consumers">The role of consumers </h2>



For consumers, the picture remains complex. It’s difficult to track how sustainable any specific food product is, especially when impacts vary so widely across regions and crops. However, individuals still hold some power.



The researchers recommend reducing food waste and cutting back on meat consumption. Both actions lower agricultural demand and reduce pressure on biodiversity. 



These changes, while small at the individual level, can aggregate into meaningful shifts when adopted widely.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balancing-farming-and-biodiversity">Balancing farming and biodiversity </h2>



As the climate crisis unfolds and food insecurity grows, the global community must confront difficult questions. How do we produce enough food without sacrificing biodiversity? Can we make space for nature and still nourish billions?



This new study makes one thing clear: the answers will not come from easy slogans or blanket policies. They will come from detailed data, local context, and a willingness to embrace complexity.



Feeding the world is not just a technical challenge - it is a deeply ecological one. And how we respond will determine the kind of world future generations inherit.

Around 10,000 years ago, the largest mammals in North America completely vanished. Megafauna including mammoths, ground sloths, and giant beavers were widely believed to have fallen victim to overhunting by rapidly expanding human populations, with climate change playing a significant role in the extinctions as well. 

But now, experts at the <a href="https://www.ice.mpg.de/">Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology</a> have found that climate change actually played a leading role in the disappearance of North American megafauna. 

Based on a new statistical modeling approach, the study shows that a drastic decrease in temperatures around 13,000 years ago likely initiated the decline of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vanishing-giants-study-reveals-shocking-decline-of-large-mammals-in-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">giant mammal populations</a>. 

For the last six decades, the prevailing theory was that the arrival of specialized "big-game" hunters in North America about 14,000 years ago led to the rapid decline of large mammals. 

It has also been debated that there is not enough archaeological evidence that overhunting was persistent or widespread enough to cause extinctions. Instead, dramatic climate and ecological changes may have been responsible for megafauna extinctions.

Around the time of the extinction event, there were two major climate changes, beginning with a period of abrupt warming that began around 14,700 years ago. This climate warming was followed by a cold snap around 12,900 years ago during which the Northern Hemisphere returned to near-glacial conditions. 

"A common approach has been to try to determine the timing of megafauna extinctions and to see how they align with human arrival in the Americas or some climatic event," said study co-lead author Mathew Stewart. 

"However, extinction is a process - meaning that it unfolds over some span of time - and so to understand what caused the demise of North America's megafauna, it's crucial that we understand how their populations fluctuated in the lead up to extinction. Without those long-term patterns, all we can see are rough coincidences."

Traditionally, experts have used the radiocarbon record to estimate past population sizes, but there is a level of uncertainty associated with radiocarbon dates.

"As a result, you can end up seeing trends in the data that don't really exist, making this method rather unsuitable for capturing changes in past population levels," explained study co-lead author W. Christopher Carleton.

"Using simulation studies where we know what the real patterns in the data are, we have been able to show that the new method does not have the same problems. As a result, our method is able to do a much better job capturing through-time changes in population levels using the radiocarbon record."

To investigate, the researchers applied a new statistical approach that was developed by Carleton. The results show that megafauna populations fluctuated in response to climate change.

"Megafauna populations appear to have been increasing as North American began to warm around 14,700 years ago," said Stewart. "But we then see a shift in this trend around 12,900 years ago as North America began to drastically cool, and shortly after this we begin to see the extinctions of megafauna occur."

While the findings suggest that the return to near glacial conditions was the direct cause for megafauna extinctions, human activities such as overhunting and habitat modification likely played an indirect role. 

"We must consider the ecological changes associated with these climate changes at both a continental and regional scale if we want to have a proper understanding of what drove these extinctions," explained study senior author Huw Groucutt. 

"Humans also aren't completely off the hook, as it remains possible that they played a more nuanced role in the megafauna extinctions than simple overkill models suggest."

North America's largest mammals were a casualty of climate change

A major shift in atmospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/active-travel-can-greatly-reduce-co2-emissions-in-the-city/">CO2</a> levels may have helped dinosaurs make a 6,500-mile journey from South America to Greenland, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.earth.columbia.edu/">Earth Institute at Columbia University</a>.

A group of long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs known as sauropodomorphs arrived in Greenland sometime between 225 and 205 million years ago. 

The new study has matched ancient magnetism patterns in rock layers at fossil sites across South America, Arizona, New Jersey, Europe, and Greenland, to determine that the dinosaurs completed this migration around 214 million years ago. At this time, all of the continents were still connected as part of the supercontinent Pangea.

Fossil records show that sauropodomorphs first appeared in Argentina and Brazil about 230 million years ago, which raises the question of why it took them so long to expand into the Northern Hemisphere.

"In principle, the dinosaurs could have walked from almost one pole to the other," explained study co-author Dennis Kent. "There was no ocean in between. There were no big mountains. And yet it took 15 million years. It's as if snails could have done it faster."

Kent estimated that if a dinosaur herd walked only one mile per day, it would take less than 20 years to make the journey between South America and Greenland.

Up until about 215 million years ago, the Triassic period had experienced extremely high levels of CO2 at around 4,000 parts per million. Between 215 and 212 million years ago, the CO2 concentration dropped by half. This would have been the same time that sauropodomorphs set out on their long journey to Greenland.

The researchers theorize that the plummeting CO2 levels and the sauropodomorph migration are linked. They suggest that the milder levels of CO2 may have helped to remove climatic barriers that had limited the sauropodomorphs to South America.

The study authors explained that on a planet supercharged with CO2, there were likely climate extremes that would have prevented the dinosaurs from migrating. "We know that with higher CO2, the dry gets drier and the wet gets wetter," said Kent.

When the CO2 levels dipped 215 to 212 million years ago, the tropical regions may have become more mild, and the arid regions could have become less dry. Certain passageways may have developed, such as along rivers or lakes, that would have helped sustain the herbivores along the way to Greenland.

"Once they arrived in Greenland, it looked like they settled in. They hung around as a long fossil record after that." 

Kent said the idea that a dip in CO2 could have helped these dinosaurs to overcome a climatic barrier is speculative but plausible, and it seems to be supported by the fossil record.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> have used remote sensing to investigate farmland erosion in the Corn Belt region of the Midwestern United States. The study revealed that out of nearly 100 million acres of land that make up the Corn Belt, more than one third has completely lost its carbon-rich <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lost-topsoil-farmers-switchgrass/">topsoil</a>. 

The findings indicate that the extent of farmland erosion in the Midwest haa been substantially underestimated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The A-horizon is the upper portion of the soil that is rich in organic matter, which is critical for plant growth because of its water and nutrient retention properties. 

Led by graduate student Evan Thaler, the UMass Amherst team analyzed satellite imagery to map areas in agricultural fields in the Corn Belt that have no remaining A-horizon soil. 

By combining the satellite measurements across the Corn Belt with high-resolution elevation data, the experts could reveal the true magnitude of erosion.

Productive agricultural soils are critically needed to produce food for a growing global population. However, farmland erosion diminishes soil quality and reduces crop yields. 

Thaler and his colleagues estimate that erosion of the A-horizon has reduced corn and soybean yields by about 6 percent. This equates tip nearly $3 billion in annual economic losses for farmers across the Midwest.

The analysis showed that A-horizon has been lost primarily on hilltops and ridgelines. This indicates that tillage erosion, or the downslope movement of soil by repeated plowing, is a major driver of soil loss in the Midwest. 

According to the researchers, the study highlights an urgent need to include tillage erosion in the soil erosion models that are used in the Unites States, as well as the need to incentivize adoption of no-till farming methods.

The research also suggests that erosion has removed nearly 1.5 petagrams of carbon from hillslopes. The experts said that switching from intensive conventional agricultural practices to soil-regenerative practices has potential to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while restoring soil productivity.

Scientists have discovered some strange and unexpected <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sponges-dna-sea-creatures/">creatures</a> living far beneath the Antarctic ice shelf, according to a new study published by <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/">Frontiers</a>. 

This is the first time a hard substrate community has been found deep beneath an ice shelf, and the discovery contradicts previous theories of what types of life could survive there.

During an expedition to the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, which is located in the southeastern Weddell Sea, researchers drilled through 900 meters of ice. At a distance of 260 kilometers from the ice front, the site was under complete darkness with temperatures of -2.2 degree Celsius. 

While very few animals have ever been observed in such conditions, scientists found that a large boulder on the seafloor was covered with sponge-like stationary animals. 

"This discovery is one of those fortunate accidents that pushes ideas in a different direction and shows us that Antarctic marine life is incredibly special and amazingly adapted to a frozen world," said study lead author Dr. Huw Griffiths of the British Antarctic Survey.

"Our discovery raises so many more questions than it answers, such as how did they get there? What are they eating? How long have they been there? How common are these boulders covered in life? Are these the same species as we see outside the ice shelf or are they new species? And what would happen to these communities if the ice shelf collapsed?"

Floating ice shelves cover more that 1.5 million square kilometers of the Antarctic continental ice shelf, yet only a total area similar in size to a tennis court has been explored. 

"Prior to this study, our knowledge of these habitats and the life they support was restricted to what has been observed from eight boreholes drilled for geological and glaciological studies," wrote the researchers.

It has been widely assumed that whatever life forms could survive beneath ice shelves become less abundant as you move farther away from open water and sunlight. In the past, some small mobile scavengers and predators like fish and worms have been spotted in these habitats. 

The researchers said that the local currents suggest this community is somewhere between 625 and 1500 kilometers in the direction of water flow from the nearest region of photosynthesis. 

There are some organisms that depend on nutrients from glacial melts or chemicals from methane seeps to survive in such extremities, but little is known about the new creatures until the researchers have an opportunity to study them further.

"To answer our questions we will have to find a way of getting up close with these animals and their environment - and that's under 900 meters of ice, 260km away from the ships where our labs are," said Dr. Griffiths. "This means that as polar scientists, we are going to have to find new and innovative ways to study them and answer all the new questions we have."

The experts noted that with the climate crisis and the collapse of these ice shelves, time is running out to study and protect these ecosystems.

"This new evidence requires us to rethink our ideas with regard to the diversity of community types found under ice shelves, the key factors which control their distribution and their vulnerability to environmental change and ice shelf collapse."

Strange creatures found beneath the Antarctic ice shelf

Experts at <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a> have proposed a theory that could explain the origin of the comet or asteroid that crashed into Earth about 66 million years ago, ultimately killing the dinosaurs.

Buried underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, the Chicxulub crater is 93 miles wilde and 12 miles deep. The impact wiped out nearly three-quarters of the plant and animal species living on Earth.

The new Harvard study by Professor Avi Loeb and PhD student Amir Siraj may finally reveal the identity of the space object and how it ended up on a collision course with Earth. 

The researchers analyzed long-period comets from the Oort cloud, an icy sphere of debris at the edge of the solar system. They determined that a significant portion of these comets can be bumped off course by Jupiter's gravitational field.

"The solar system acts as a kind of pinball machine," said Siraj. "Jupiter, the most massive planet, kicks incoming long-period comets into orbits that bring them very close to the sun."

These so-called "sungrazers" can get broken apart into pieces of the rock and produce cometary shrapnel.

"In a sungrazing event, the portion of the comet closer to the sun feels a stronger gravitational pull than the part that is further, resulting in a tidal force across the object," explained Siraj. 

"You can get what's called a tidal disruption event, in which a large comet breaks up into many smaller pieces. And crucially, on the journey back to the Oort cloud, there's an enhanced probability that one of these fragments hit the Earth."

The findings increase the chances of long-period comets impacting Earth by a factor of 10, and show that about 20 percent of long-period comets become sungrazers. According to the researchers, their new rate of impact is consistent with the age of Chicxulub, providing a satisfactory explanation for its origin and other impactors like it.

"Our paper provides a basis for explaining the occurrence of this event," said Professor Loeb. "We are suggesting that, in fact, if you break up an object as it comes close to the sun, it could give rise to the appropriate event rate and also the kind of impact that killed the dinosaurs."

The new theory may also explain why the Chicxulub crater had rock that was composed of carbonaceous chondrite. It is widely believed that the Chicxulub impactor originated from the main belt, which is an asteroid population between the orbit of Jupiter and Mars. 

However, carbonaceous chondrites are rare among main-belt asteroids, but may be widespread among long-period comets, which provides additional support for the new calculations.

The new Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile may be able to observe tidal disruption of long-period comets after it becomes operational next year.

"We should see smaller fragments coming to Earth more frequently from the Oort cloud," said Professor Loeb. "I hope that we can test the theory by having more data on long-period comets, get better statistics, and perhaps see evidence for some fragments."

Professor Loeb said that understanding this is not just crucial to solving a mystery of Earth's history, but could prove pivotal if such an event were to threaten the planet. "It must have been an amazing sight, but we don't want to see that again."

In a new study from the <a href="https://www.vims.edu/">Virginia Institute of Marine Science</a>, experts have found that it is important to measure biodiversity across regional landscapes over decades, rather than just across a small site in the short-term. The research will ultimately guide conservation planning and support efforts to make ecosystems more resilient.

Biodiversity is traditionally examined using short-term plot experiments in which ecologists monitor the health of a single meadow, forest grove, or pond. The new study emphasizes the importance of conducting biodiversity studies that provide insight on a larger scale. 

"Having low biodiversity is like putting all your eggs in one basket and puts us at greater risk of something catastrophic happening," said study lead author Dr. Christopher Patrick. "We've known this for a long time, but never before have we shown this to be true for entire regions and landscapes."

The team compiled, analyzed, and modeled data collected over decades across both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The investigation was focused on the abundance and diversity of 50 families of terrestrial beetles in the Sonoran Desert, 25 species of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the Chesapeake Bay, and 56 species of fish from small streams in Maryland.

A recent drop in SAV coverage within the Chesapeake Bay, as recorded by VIMS' long-term monitoring program, demonstrates the threats posed by low biodiversity.

"For the past few years, our gains in seagrass coverage were mostly due to the expansion of one species, widgeon grass," said Dr. Patrick. "That made us vulnerable. When widgeon grass had a bad year in 2019, we saw the single biggest drop in Chesapeake Bay SAV in the history of the VIMS monitoring program. The lesson here is that promoting biodiversity will increase ecosystem resilience." 

Climate change is increasing the risk for local extinctions, promoting outbreaks of pests and diseases, and diminishing yields from human fisheries and agriculture. This means that conservation efforts are even more urgently needed. 

"Understanding the interplay between regional and local controls of ecosystem variability may aid in the design of more effective conservation actions, management practices, and monitoring networks worldwide," said Dr. Patrick.

"Our results, bolster the argument for conserving biodiversity by showing that it is needed at both local and regional scales to maintain stable delivery of ecosystem services across entire landscapes."

"We should not only avoid putting all our eggs in one basket, but ensure that we have lots of different kinds of eggs in lots of different kinds of baskets."

Experts at <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/">Imperial College London</a> report that "active travel," such as walking and cycling, can help tackle the climate crisis.

The researchers found that shifting to active travel could save as much as a quarter of personal carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from transport.

The study is the first of its kind to investigate the carbon-reducing impact of city-based lifestyle changes. The results suggest that increases in active mobility can even lower carbon footprints in European cities that already have a substantial number of people that walk and cycle.

"Our findings suggest that, even if not all car trips could be substituted by bicycle trips, the potential for decreasing emissions is huge," said study co-author Dr. Audrey de Nazelle.

"This is one more piece of evidence on the multiple benefits of active travel, alongside our previous studies showing cycling is the best way to get around cities for both physical and mental health, and that promoting cycling helps tackle obesity. This should encourage different sectors to work together to create desirable futures from multiple health, environmental and social perspectives."

The study was focused on nearly 2,000 people in seven European cities. The team collected data on the participants' daily travel behavior, as well as information on the location of their homes and work spaces.

The experts used statistical modeling to analyze how changes in the mode of daily travel may influence traffic-related CO2 emissions.

"We found that those who switch just one trip per day from car driving to cycling reduce their carbon footprint by about 0.5 tons over a year, representing a substantial share of average per capita CO2 emissions," explained study lead author Dr. Christian Brand from the University of Oxford.

"If just 10% of the population were to change travel behaviour, the emissions savings would be around 4% of lifecycle CO2 emissions from all car travel."

The study revealed that individuals who already cycled had 84 percent lower CO2 emissions from all daily travel compared to non-cyclists. The greatest benefits of switching to active modes of transport were for business travel, followed by leisure trips and commuting to work or place of study. 

"A typical response to the climate crisis is to 'do something', such as planting more trees, or switching to electric vehicles. While these are important and effective, they are neither sufficient nor fast enough to meet our ambitious climate targets," said Dr. Brand.

"Doing more of a good thing combined with doing less of a bad thing - and doing it now - is much more compliant with a 'net zero' pathway and preserving our planet's and our own futures. Switching from car to active mobility is one thing to do, which would make a real difference, and we show here how good this can be in cities."

According to the researchers, this will not only be good for the climate, but also for reducing social inequalities and improving public health and quality of life in urban areas. 

"To improve active travel take-up, cities across the world will need to increase investment in high-quality infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists and incorporate policy and planning concepts that require a fairly radical rethink of our cities," said Dr. de Nazelle.

"This is in turn likely to reduce inequalities, because the concepts involve mixing different population groups rather than maintaining the model of residential zoning by socioeconomic status currently used."

For animals in the Rocky Mountains, global warming is literally an uphill battle. A long-term study from <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/">CU Boulder</a> has revealed that golden-mantled ground squirrels, along with many other small mammals, are climbing higher into the mountains to escape unsuitably warm <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-linked-to-low-quality-diets-among-children/">temperatures</a>.

Study lead author Christy McCain is an associate professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a curator of vertebrates at the CU Museum of Natural History.

"It's frightening. We've been talking about climate change in the Rockies for a long time, but I think we can say that this is a sign that things are now responding and responding quite drastically," said Professor McCain.

The golden-mantled ground squirrel is a popular sight among tourists that has an appearance similar to a chipmunk. The squirrels live in conifer forests in the Rockies and several other western mountain ranges.

"It is likely one of the most photographed mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park as it poses and preens on rocks near the roadside and in campgrounds," said Professor McCain. "They hibernate in winter, are territorial in the summer, and they make distinctive alarm calls to notify each other of nearby dangers."

The research was focused on nearly 50 species of small mammals located in the Front Range and San Juan Rockies, including mice, shrews, and even the yellow-bellied marmot.

The experts determined that the ranges of these small mammals have shifted by an average more than 400 feet up in elevation since the 1980s. Meanwhile, the ground squirrels and other "montane mammals" which already live at higher elevations have shifted by up to 1,100 feet.

According to the researchers, this trend could squeeze many animals out of Colorado altogether. Professor McCain said that the small mammals may be bellwethers for larger and increasingly urgent changes in the Rocky Mountains.

"I was expecting that we would see something between 100 to 200 meters, but we saw a lot more. This is way bigger than the change that has been determined in other mountain regions around the world."

According to Professor McCain, the study paints a stark picture of a mountain range in crisis. The good news is that there may still be time to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to protect the animals and natural landscapes.

"It's a wake-up call," said Professor McCain. "We have to start taking this seriously immediately if we want to have healthy mountains and ecosystems."

The maximum wind speeds of hurricanes near Bermuda have more than doubled over the last six decades as a result of rising ocean temperatures, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.southampton.ac.uk/">University of Southampton</a>. Hurricanes pull energy from the ocean's surface, and warmer waters are now fueling more intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/severe-storms-triggered-a-decline-in-antarctic-sea-ice/">storms</a>.

The researchers determined that between 1955 and 2019, the average hurricane intensity near Bermuda increased from 35 to 73 miles per hour. This is equivalent to an increase of more than six miles per hour each decade. Meanwhile, the surface and subsurface temperatures in the region heated by up to 1.1 degrees Celsius.

Based on the average upper ocean temperature in the top 50 meters of the Atlantic Ocean, the experts developed a method for predicting the intensity of hurricanes near Bermuda.

"The approach we used could provide a better way to predict Bermuda storm intensity than current theory or operational methods alone," explained study lead author Samantha Hallam. "It could also be use elsewhere in the subtropical Atlantic where there is a shallow mixed layer depth, typically north of twenty five degrees north."

"We used hurricane potential intensity theory, locally-based weather balloon soundings, surface and upper ocean observations of conditions in and around hurricanes passing within 100km of Bermuda over the last 65 years (including direct hits and 'near-miss' storms)."

The researchers conducted a statistical analysis on hurricane paths within 100 kilometers of Bermuda over the last 60 years. Surface and subsurface ocean temperature observations were obtained from the Bermuda Atlantic Times Series (BATS) Hydrostation S program.

Study co-author Mark Guishard, director of the Bermuda Weather Service, said the findings demonstrate the greater relevance of upper ocean heat versus sea surface temperatures alone in the prediction of hurricane intensity. 

"Preliminary testing with the recent passage of Hurricane Paulette shows promising results that this technique could be further developed into an additional operational tool for forecasters locally."

By improving predictions of wind speeds from hurricanes, experts can determine the necessary level of response in advance of the storm and potentially mitigate some of the destructive impacts.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/journal/1748-9326">Environmental Research Letters</a>.

A new study from <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/">Oregon State University</a> has found that while the rate of deforestation is reduced in protected areas, it is still not prevented. Considering that most terrestrial species live in forests, deforestation has major implications for future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-and-animals-evolve-faster-in-coldspots-than-in-biodiversity-hotspots/">biodiversity</a> loss.

"Evidence indicates that we're in the middle of a mass extinction event the likes of which the planet has seen only five times before," said study leader Christopher Wolf. "Formally protected areas have been proposed as a primary tool for reducing deforestation, and therefore stemming species extinctions and slowing reductions in carbon storage."

The research is believed to represent the first comprehensive look at how effective protected areas are at limiting forest loss. The investigation was focused on more than 18,000 land parcels spanning two million square miles across 63 countries.

The findings indicate that just 6.5 percent of Earth's forests are truly protected, which falls short of the 2020 target of 17 percent set by the United Nations' Convention on Biological Diversity.

The researchers used the World Database on Protected Areas and forest maps to measure changes within protected areas. These estimates were then compared to the rates of forest loss in control areas with similar characteristics such as elevation and proximity to densely populated areas.

The study showed that the rate of deforestation is 41 percent lower in protected areas. The experts also determined that previous estimates that suggest 15.7 percent of the Earth's forest are protected from deforestation are far too optimistic.

"It's clearly not enough just to call a forest area 'protected' and assume that it really is," said Wolf. "When you look at conservation effectiveness, you can't simply rely on the amount of officially protected land as a metric. Nearly one-third of all protected areas are actually under intense human pressure."

The rates of deforestation in protected areas were highest in Africa, Europe, and South America. 

Of the 63 countries examined for the study, Sierra Leone, Malaysia, and Cambodia were found to be losing their forest cover the fastest. Meanwhile, the most effective protected areas were found in New Zealand.

"Protected area effectiveness is limited by varying levels of monitoring and enforcement and the money available for them," said Wolf. "Unfortunately, our research shows that protected areas rarely if ever do more than slow down deforestation. And in general, the larger the protected area, the higher the rate of forest loss."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/natecolevol">Nature Ecology and Evolution</a>.

Deforestation is slowed by protected areas, but not prevented

A new study from Oregon State University has found that...

A study from <a href="https://www.bangor.ac.uk/">Bangor University</a> is providing new insight into how migratory birds manage to reorient themselves after venturing off course. The researchers found that reed warblers detect geomagnetic signatures that can guide them back to their migratory route after they have been displaced.

The study is the first of its kind to reveal that birds have the perceptive ability to navigate toward a magnetic position that they have experienced before along their normal migration route.

"What these birds are achieving is 'true navigation,'" explained study co-author Dr. Dmitry Kishkinev. "In other words, they are able to return to a known goal after displacement to a completely unknown location without relying on familiar surroundings, cues that emanate from the destination, or information collected during the outward journey."

Different locations on Earth have distinct geomagnetic signatures based on factors such as the strength of the geomagnetic field or the angle between directions to the geographic and magnetic North poles.

For the investigation, adult reed warblers were held in captivity for a short period of time. Because they were adults, the birds were already familiar with their migration route and its general magnetic signatures.

Once they were released, the warblers were exposed to a simulation of the Earth's magnetic signature at a location thousands of miles away from the birds' natural migratory range.

Despite all the sensory clues that showed the birds they were physically located elsewhere, they behaved based on the magnetic signals that they were experiencing. As a result, the reed warblers oriented themselves to fly in a direction which would lead them from the simulated location back to their migratory path.

The findings show that Earth's magnetic field is key in guiding reed warblers when they are off course.

"The overriding impulse was to respond to the magnetic information they were receiving," explained study co-author Richard Holland. 

"What our current work shows is that birds are able to sense that they are beyond the bounds of the magnetic fields that are familiar to them from their year-round movements, and are able to extrapolate their position sufficiently from the signals. This fascinating ability enables bird to navigate towards their normal migration route."

"We have already shown that the reed warblers use the same magnetic cues experienced within their natural range, but this study shows that they can extrapolate what they understand about how the magnetic field varies in space far beyond any previous experience they have had," said study co-author Florian Packmor.

While the research was focused on the Eurasian reed warbler, the researchers expect their findings can be applied to other migrating songbirds.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

Reed warblers use Earth's magnetic field to get back on track

The COVID-19 pandemic presented scientists with a unique opportunity to study traffic-related air pollution. Experts at the <a href="https://www.usf.edu/">University of South Florida</a> have found that dramaticdeclines in traffic during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urgent-wake-up-call-climate-change-linked-to-covid-19/">COVID-19</a> lockdowns improved air quality in some states, but was not enough to offset industrial sources of atmospheric pollution in others. 

The findings suggest that while decreasing the number of vehicles on the road is a good first step toward cleaner air, additional measures aimed at coal plants and factories must also be considered.

Study lead author Yasin Elshorbany is an assistant professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Change at USF's St. Petersburg campus. Professor Elshorbany is working with a multidisciplinary team of experts to examine the key environmental impacts of COVID-19 lockdowns. 

The goal of the research is to gain a better understanding of the health and socioeconomic consequences of changes in air quality.

For the current investigation, Professor Elshorbany analyzed the impact of the pandemic on air quality by using remote sensors that measured different elements in the air, such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, and aerosol particles. The study was study on states with high traffic volume, including New York, Illinois, Florida, California, and Texas.

According to the study, vehicle volumes dropped by 40 to 60 percent across the United States shortly after the pandemic was declared.

The results showed a in air quality in regions

There were significant air quality improvements in regions where traffic is the main pollution source, such as in New York City and the state of Florida. However, industrial emissions and other sources of pollution dominated other areas, including Chicago and Charleston, West Virginia, where air quality actually worsened during lockdowns. 

"This shows that in certain states, in addition to traffic regulations we need to focus on other big pollution problems, such as industrial emissions in Illinois, wildfires in California or oil refineries in Texas," said Professor Elshorbany.

The researchers were interested in evaluating the extent of air quality improvements during the lockdown, considering that recent environmental regulations related to tailpipe pollution were already leading to cleaner air in the United States.

"With the advancements in technology and the use of catalysts in cars over the past few decades, air quality has improved in the U.S.," said Professor Elshorbany. "This has resulted in traffic not serving as the main pollutant in most of the country."

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

NASA monitors giant dust storms on Mars

Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.

These observations have many applications, such as ship routing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modem-ocean-is-a-tough-place-for-whales-to-survive/">ocean</a> current forecasting, and debris tracking.



"A project supported by the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities recently investigated a new technique to measure sea surface topography very precisely," reports ESA.



"The technique involves looking at satellite navigation (GNSS) signals that have been reflected off of the sea surface at very low angles. At these so-called grazing angles, waves and surface roughness have very little impact on the reflection process; the sea surface acts as a very smooth mirror."



Estel Cardellach is the principal investigator at the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia, who first submitted the idea for the project.



“In a mirror-like reflection the phase of the signal can be tracked – it is continuous," said Cardellach. "Different surface heights result in different phase measurements. It gives a very precise measurement of the surface altitude at a few centimetres’ precision.”



The researchers developed a GNSS receiver and set up an experiment in the Balaeric Islands to collect signals from the receiver that were reflected off the sea surface. Ultimately, these signals will provide improved measurements of the shape of the sea surface.
