<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic</a> bags are everywhere, and too many slip into rivers and onto beaches. A new analysis finds that policies that either charge a small fee per bag or prohibit them outright cut the share of bags found during shoreline cleanups by 25 to 47 percent.



The study combed through hundreds of city, county, and state rules passed between 2017 and 2023. It matched those policies to more than 45,000 volunteer cleanups across the United States to see what actually changed on the ground.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-ran-the-study">Who ran the study</h2>



The research was coauthored by <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/faculty/kimberly-oremus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kimberly L. Oremus</a> of the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy (<a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UDEL</a>). 



Oremus and her collaborator set out to measure litter, not just shopping behavior, so the results speak to what ends up in nature.



The team relied on citizen science, meaning trained volunteers recorded what they collected during beach, river, and lake cleanups. 



They drew on <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TIDES</a>, a public database that stores those counts in one place so researchers can analyze patterns across time and place.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-plastic-bag-policies">Studying plastic bag policies</h2>



To isolate the effect of bag policies, the authors used a Difference-in-Differences (<a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/population-health-methods/difference-difference-estimation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DiD</a>) approach that compares places with and without new laws over the same period. 



That design helps rule out unrelated trends that affect everyone, such as national shifts in shopping or packaging.



The headline result is simple. In communities with full bans or fees, the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-linked-to-high-blood-pressure-and-heart-problems/">plastic</a> bags in the litter mix fell relative to similar places without policies, and the decline grew in the years after a law took effect.



State level rules tended to be more reliable in the data than city or county policies. Effects looked similar along coasts and rivers, with hints of larger gains along lakes where winds and currents spread litter differently.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-policy-fees-vs-bans">Plastic policy: Fees vs. bans</h2>



Fees change the default at every checkout and discourage taking a bag when you do not need one, which reduces both thin and thicker bag use.



Other <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carrier-bag-charge-summary-of-data-in-england/single-use-plastic-carrier-bags-charge-data-for-england-2024-to-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> points in the same direction outside the United States. England reports an almost 98 percent drop in single use carrier bags at major retailers since its charge began.



Policies that only restrict thin bags often allow thicker <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-soil-is-now-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-dumping-ground/">plastic</a> labeled as reusable. 



Those partial bans showed the smallest and least precise effects in the analysis, which is consistent with shoppers substituting one kind of plastic for another.



Some states also pass preemption <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/environment-and-natural-resources/state-plastic-bag-legislation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laws</a> that block cities and counties from regulating bags at all. When local governments cannot act, the study’s data suggest statewide policies become especially important.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-and-entanglement">Wildlife and entanglement</h2>



The cleanup records include notes on animals found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-99-percent-sea-turtles-organ-tissue-reproductive-system/">entangled in debris</a>. 



In areas with bag policies, the presence of entangled animals dropped by roughly 30 to 37 percent, although the authors caution that the estimates are imprecise and more data are needed.



That finding aligns with what we know about <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/stories/single-use-plastics-101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-use-plastics</a>. Thin bags linger in water and along shorelines, where they can snag, smother, or be eaten by turtles, birds, and fish.



Many studies track what happens at store checkouts, but fewer track what ends up outdoors. Shoreline cleanups offer a window into that last step in the chain from purchase to pollution.



Across the study period, the share of bags among collected items rose overall, but it rose less where bag laws existed. That pattern is exactly what you want to see if policies are slowing the flow of litter into the environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-policy-steps">Global plastic policy steps</h2>



A small, universal fee is a simple tool that nudges behavior without banning choices. Full bans can work too, and the analysis shows both approaches reduce the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glass-bottles-contain-more-microplastics-than-plastic-containers/">plastic</a> bags found during cleanups.



The mix of policies should match local conditions. In places with more bag litter to begin with, impacts were largest, so targeting high problem areas with fast action can deliver quick gains.



Plastic bag rules are only one part of the picture. Negotiators from 175 countries are working toward a plastics treaty under <a href="https://www.unep.org/inc-plastic-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a> that could standardize action on a wider set of products and chemicals.



The study notes that bottles, caps, and other items did not decline when bag policies passed. That is a signal that targeted rules for other single use products would be needed to curb overall litter.



Adopt a modest fee or a full ban that applies across retail and restaurant settings, and keep the text simple so it is easy to enforce. Pair the policy with clear signs at checkout and with retailer reporting that tracks compliance.



Measure results in the same way the researchers did. Recruit volunteers, log items in TIDES, and watch how the litter mix changes year over year so the policy can be adjusted as needed.



The study is published in <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adp9274" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science</a>.

Melting permafrost at high altitudes releases more CO2 than it captures. A new study from the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/">University of Colorado at Boulder</a> suggests that thawing permafrost in high altitudes is making a greater contribution to CO2 emissions than what was previously realized. The researchers determined that alpine tundra in Colorado’s Front Range releases more carbon than it captures, which could ultimately promote both further warming and a subsequent increase in CO2 emissions. 

This type of feedback loop has already been documented in the Arctic, where <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/melting-permafrost-climate-change/">melting permafrost</a> is exposing frozen tundra soil and releasing carbon dioxide that has been stored in it for centuries.

Study lead author John Knowles is a researcher at the <a href="http://instaar.colorado.edu/">Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research</a> (INSTAAR). 

“We wondered if the same thing could be happening in alpine terrain,” said Knowles. “This study is a strong indication that that is indeed the case.”

To investigate, the researchers measured the surface-to-air CO2 transfer for seven consecutive years at the Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in Colorado. This high-altitude research site is funded by the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/">National Science Foundation</a> and has been continuously operating for over 35 years. 

The team also collected samples of CO2 from the soil and used radiocarbon dating to estimate how long the carbon had been present. The experts were surprised to find that landscapes above 11,000 feet emitted more CO2 than they captured each year. Another unexpected finding was evidence that microbial activity was high all year long, despite the conditions on the ground.

“Microbes need it to be not too cold and not too dry, they need liquid water,” said Knowles. “The surprise here is that we show winter microbial activity persisting in permafrost areas that don’t collect much insulating snowpack due to wind stripping it away.”Melting permafrost at high altitudes releases more CO2 than it captures

According to Knowles, the findings will need to be factored in to future projections of global warming.

“Until now, little was known about how alpine tundra behaved with regard to this balance, and especially how it could continue emitting CO2 year after year. But now, we have evidence that climate change or another disturbance may be liberating decades-to-centuries-old carbon from this landscape.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

A new study from <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/">Columbia University</a> has found that the damage left behind by <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/hurricane-maria-trees-recover/">Hurricane Maria</a> in the forests of Puerto Rico was unprecedented in modern times. The researchers warn that the intense storms associated with climate change could transform tropical forests, releasing more carbon into the atmosphere and limiting the suitable habitats for many unique species. 

Hurricane Maria wiped out more trees than any known storm, taking out mostly older trees that were thought to be resistant to storms. According to the study authors, the damage may be a warning of similar events to come.  

“These hurricanes are going to kill more trees. They're going to break more trees. The factors that protected many trees in the past will no longer apply,” said study lead author Maria Uriarte. “Forests will become shorter and smaller, because they won't have time to regrow, and they will be less diverse.”

Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in October of 2017 as a Category 4 storm with winds up to 155 miles per hour. An estimated 20 million to 40 million trees were either completely wiped out or severely damaged. The trees were stripped of their foliage, snapped in half, or completely blown out of the ground. 

The study was focused on a 40-acre section of the El Yunque National Forest that has been closely monitored by multiple teams since 1990. This made it possible to compare damage from Maria with that of Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Georges, which were both Category 3 storms. 

The researchers determined that Maria killed twice as many trees and broke more than three times as many trunks compared to previous storms. The species that suffered the worst from Maria, with breakage rates up to 12 times those of the other hurricanes, were valuable hardwoods that had a history of being the most resilient to major storms. These giant trees offer specialized habitats for many birds and other animals that smaller trees do not provide.

Edmund Tanner is a senior lecturer emeritus at the University of Cambridge who was not involved in the research. He explained that this study is important because “it reports different, rather than just intensified, effects of strong versus weaker hurricanes.” Tanner also explained that the effects are “probably representative of huge areas of tropical lowland forest near sea coasts, some of which are likely to experience similar or worse damage in a warming world.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

While <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ozone-layer-full-recovery-2060/">atmospheric ozone</a> serves as a vital barrier protecting the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, ground ozone pollution is another matter entirely.  

Ozone forms when nitrogen oxide from vehicle emissions reacts with volatile organic compounds, some of which come from plants. 

Inhaling too much ozone can cause respiratory problems, trigger asthma attacks, and harm lung tissue, according to the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ground-level-ozone-pollution/ground-level-ozone-basics#wwh">Environmental Protection Agency</a>. 

In a new study, researchers examined how drought conditions impact ozone pollution by reviewing data from two cities in California with high levels of ozone pollution during the worst drought in the state’s history.

As droughts have a major impact on vegetation and plant growth, the researchers wondered to what extent drought influenced ozone pollution due to the relationship between nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compounds from plants. 

The study was published in the American Chemical Society’s Environmental Science &amp; Technology journal. 

Plants and ozone have a complicated relationship as some compounds like isoprene contribute to ozone production, but plants also take in and store ozone through their leaves. 

The researchers reviewed ground and satellite data from Fresno and Bakersfield in California from 2011 to 2015.

The data contained information on isoprene and ozone concentrations in the air, leaf area index, and nitrogen oxide levels before, during and after the drought. 

Isoprene concentrations were unaffected at the start of the drought, but dropped more than 50 percent during the peak of the drought. 

This drop in isoprene concentrations, in turn, impacted ozone production and ozone dropped 20 percent during the drought. 

However, because the drought limited the plants’ ability to take up ozone in the two cities, ozone levels overall only dropped by six percent even though ozone production dropped significantly. 

The study adds an important factor to consider when researchers study ways to limit ground ozone pollution.

A new study from the <a href="https://www.egu.eu/">European Geosciences Union</a> is predicting that around half of the ice glacier volume in the Alps will be lost between the years 2017 and 2050. The analysis has produced the most detailed projections of all <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/new-cracks-greenland-glacier/">glaciers</a> across the Alps to date. 

Study lead author Harry Zekollari a researcher at <a href="https://www.ethz.ch/en.html">ETH Zurich</a> and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research. He said that the future evolution of glaciers will strongly depend on how the climate will evolve. “In case of a more limited warming, a far more substantial part of the glaciers could be saved,” explained Zekollari.

On the other hand, the researchers found that a large portion of the ice may be lost regardless of how much greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. 

To investigate the fate of Alpine glaciers in a warming climate, the team used new computer models and observational data to study how the ice would change under different scenarios. The experts used 2017 as their “present day” emissions reference.

Under a scenario with limited warming, greenhouse gas emissions would peak in the next few years and then decline rapidly, limiting additional global warming to 2°C by the end of the century. The study showed that in this case, Alpine glaciers would be reduced to just over one-third of their present-day volume by 2100.

The high-emissions scenario would take place if emissions continue to rise rapidly over the next few decades. 

“In this pessimistic case, the Alps will be mostly ice free by 2100, with only isolated ice patches remaining at high elevation, representing 5% or less of the present-day ice volume,” said study co-author Matthias Huss.

“The Alps would lose about 50% of their present glacier volume by 2050 in all scenarios,” explained Zekollari. “A reason why volume loss is mostly independent of emissions until 2050 is that increases in mean global temperature with increasing greenhouse gases only become more pronounced in the second half of the century.”

“Another reason is that glaciers at present have 'too much' ice: their volume, especially at lower elevations, still reflects the colder climate of the past because glaciers are slow at responding to changing climate conditions. Even if we manage to stop the climate from warming any further, keeping it at the level of the past 10 years, glaciers would still lose about 40% of their present-day volume by 2050 because of this ‘glacier response time.’”

The Alps could lose 50 percent of glacier volume by 2050

A new study from the European Geosciences Union is predicting...

Why major action is needed to protect our oceans from potential devastation. According to the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/">Inter­governmental Panel on Climate Change</a> (IPCC), environmental threats to human and natural systems will be greatly reduced if global warming is limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels as opposed to more extreme warming of 2°C. 

By comparison, a 1.5°C temperature increase is associated with lower rates of climate change that will give humans, animals, and ecosystems more time to adapt and survive. 

The IPCC explains that, even though the warming associated with emissions from the pre-industrial period to the present will persist and cause further changes in the climate, these emissions alone are unlikely to push global warming to 1.5°C.

Some of the services provided by our terrestrial and marine ecosystems have already changed as a result of global warming. The IPCC suggests that with warming in excess of 2°C, these trends will become much more destructive. In the ocean alone, all of the planet's coral reefs could be lost.

Peter Thomson is the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean. In a feature for <a href="https://time.com/">Time Magazine</a>, Thomson emphasizes that we do not yet know the consequences of losing <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/marine-heatwaves-coral-reefs/">coral reefs</a> or how ocean habitats will function without them. "The predicament is that the planet is still on a ­devastating course toward 3° to 4° C global warming," writes Thomson. "And yet, the IPCC report notes, it is still possible to stay at 1.5° C. The good news is that we have a plan. It’s multi­faceted and requires a radical change of human production and consumption patterns, but it will succeed if people from all walks of life get behind it."

Thomson says that, on a global level, we must remain dedicated to the targets of the Paris Agreement, as well as to the UN's goal of conservation and ­sustainable use of the ocean’s resources.

"Beyond that, it is vital that we establish new law for marine bio­diversity beyond national jurisdictions. There is already a conference under way at the U.N. working on this issue, as there is a growing scientific consensus that we need to move toward a goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030," writes Thomson.

"On an individual level, we all have a role to play as well. In my own work, one of my top priorities is putting an end to the billions of dollars in government subsidies worldwide that go mostly to industrial fleets chasing diminishing stocks of fish - and ensuring that the public funds saved are spent on beneficial measures like establishing and enforcing marine-­protected areas." 

"But everyone, from government officials to business executives to scientists to students, has the ability to make a difference. We can choose not to use nonessential plastics. We can consume seafood only from sustainable, legally caught stocks. We can get serious about reducing our carbon footprints, so we are on the right side of global efforts toward a carbon-neutral world by 2050."

Thomson also points out the urgent need to understand more about ocean science. "We increasingly understand how little we actually know, and in these precarious times, it is essential that we have a firm grasp on whether we can afford to add new stressors to the ocean’s ecosystem."

"All of this, and much more, is necessary if we want to deliver on the plan to save life in the ocean. Considering that every second breath we take comes from the ocean, it is clear we must."

Why major action is needed to protect our oceans from...

For many people, working from home is the dream, and for others, it’s just another day at the office. But cities are now beginning to view telecommuting and remote work as a viable way to combat traffic congestion and harmful emissions. 

Last August, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker unveiled an <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/editorials/2019/08/04/working-from-home-policy-tool-ease-traffic/aUZKkRED1gTOgmRRSyDS7O/story.html">$18 billion transportation investment bill</a> that includes a tax credit which will give companies more flexibility in offering work from home perks to their employees. The main goal is getting more cars off the roads. 

Boston isn’t the only city to suffer from nightmare traffic, but telecommuting is on the rise. 

According to a 2016 Gallup poll, 43 percent of the American workforce reported working from home for at least some portion of the week.

Gallup <a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/283985/working-remotely-effective-gallup-research-says-yes.aspx">reports</a> that employees who are "engaged" are more enthusiastic, energetic, positive, and productive. The experts found that employees who work remotely between 60 and 80 percent of the time are most likely to agree that their engagement needs are being met.

According to <a href="https://careerswiki.com/publications/remote-work-statistics/">careers.wiki.com</a>, remote work opportunities increased by 44 percent from 2015 to 2020. Since 2008, the number of remote work positions has exploded by over 159 percent.

With more flexible schedules, remote workers can achieve a better work-life balance that greatly improves well-being and job satisfaction.

The ease of working from home and the rise in telecommuting trends worldwide are due in part to the way digital platforms are reshaping everything from how we communicate, to how we work, how we stay informed, and how we connect with others. 

Freelancing, contract work, and telecommuting have become so popular that you can find office spaces for rent specifically for freelancers and contract work.

The nature of office work, office spaces, and the traditional nine to five are changing to keep up with the digital age.

With fewer commuters, there are fewer cars, so that must reduce emissions, right? 

That appeared to be the case for the Washington DC metro area when a 2013 Regional Travel Trends study reported a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2016/04/20/travel-trends-show-power-of-telecommuting/">dip in Metrorail riders</a> but no corresponding increase in automobile traffic. A partial reason for this inconsistency was tied to a rise in remote work. 

A study published in the <a href="http://www.lancetcountdown.org/media/1338/canada-policy-brief-final.pdf">Lancet</a> found that telecommuting not only benefits public health, but also helps with sustainable travel and lowering a city’s carbon footprint. 

In 2015, the United States Patent and Trademark Office estimated that remote work reduced the number of commuting miles and that people working for the agency drove 84 million miles less and reduced emissions by 44,000 tons. 

The transportation sector generates more emissions in the US than the industry, electricity, commercial, and agricultural sectors, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. 

With so many emissions wrapped up in the daily work commute, telecommuting and remote work could serve as powerful tools to help reduce emissions and traffic. 

One 2013 <a href="https://globalworkplaceanalytics.com/brags/news-releases/fed-telework-could-save-11-billion-and-16-million-trees-worth-of-greenhouse-gases">Global Workplace Analytics report</a> found that federal government teleworkers could reduce as many emissions as the planting of 16 million trees. 

<a href="https://www.flexjobs.com/">Flexjobs</a>, a job platform dedicated to remote, contract, and flexible work, reported that Dell, Xerox, and Aetna saved 95,294 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with their telecommuting policies in 2015 alone. This is the equivalent of removing 20,000 passenger vehicles from the road. 

Emissions and traffic congestion aren’t the only way that working from home benefits the environment. With fewer workers heading to traditional office spaces, energy demands are reduced for companies and office buildings. 

Companies can scale down offices and with it their energy needs, including heating, cooling, and electricity use. 

Not only could remote work reduce congestion during peak commuting hours, but would also expose fewer people to harmful air pollution, which has been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease and early death. 

A 2018 study conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.stir.ac.uk/">University of Stirling</a> in Scotland found that women working in areas near heavy traffic such as border crossings and toll booths have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. 

The average daily commute in America is around 26 minutes one way, according to the <a href="https://www.census.gov/library/visualizations/interactive/travel-time.html">US Census Bureau</a>, which totals over 200 hours spent on the road, driving to and from work per year. 

When you add up the average fuel costs, commuting not only exacerbates traffic congestion and releases a record number of emissions each year, but the financial costs for drivers also take a toll. 

One <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-commute-costs/your-commute-is-costing-you-more-than-you-realize-idUSKBN0E721M20140527">Reuters</a> report found that even though you can deduct some business driving from your taxes, the daily commute can cost drivers thousands of dollars. 

“So if you have a 20-mile commute to work, multiply it out: 40 miles each workday times 50 cents a mile,” Personal Finance Blogger Mr. Money told Reuters. “And there are 2,500 of those workdays in every decade, so that ‘not too bad’ commute is burning at least $50,000 every ten years.”

Commutes are costly, both environmentally and economically speaking. Working from home, even for part of a workweek has the potential to drastically cut traffic congestion, reduce emissions, and improve employee productivity and happiness. Telecommuting just makes sense, especially with the nature of today’s changing global workforce.

As the global population grows, climate change threatens our food supply. In a feature written for <a href="https://time.com/">Time Magazine</a>, Vanderbilt University Professor Amanda Little describes the grim reality of a booming human population that faces severe climate-related threats to the global food supply. The symptoms of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/us-cities-vulnerable-climate-change/">climate change</a>, such as rising temperatures and extreme weather events, are sabotaging the land and crops that feed the world.

"For most of us, this still feels like an abstract problem," writes Professor Little. "The industrialized world on the whole is enjoying a more abundant, diverse and accessible food supply than ever before in human history."

"But disruptions in supply are already evident almost everywhere food is grown. Last month, the heat wave that swept Europe scorched old vineyards and new cornfields alike. When Bordeaux reached a record 106 degrees Fahrenheit, France’s Minister of Agriculture said the country’s coveted wine production would decline up to 13 percent in 2019. The soy and corn farmers in the American Midwest, meanwhile, faced a very different problem: sodden fields from unusually heavy spring rains were too wet to plant, resulting in billions of dollars of lost crops."

A recent report from the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a> (IPCC) highlights the urgent need to dismantle the current food production system, which is a major contributor to its own demise. The massive team of 107 experts in 52 countries found that the entire food production system, including transportation and packaging, accounts for up to 37 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

"If we continue to degrade ecosystems, if we continue to convert natural ecosystems, we continue to deforest and we continued to destroy our soils, we're going to lose this natural subsidy that we're getting that's protecting us in part from ourselves and from the damage that we're creating as we pump these greenhouse gases in the atmosphere," states Louis Verchot, who is one of the lead authors of the report. 

The study suggests that added pressure on land and water resources, such as changes in population growth and food consumption patterns, will have dire consequences for the global food supply. Storms, drought, and other extreme weather events will further strain worldwide food production. In this vicious cycle, food will become less available, more expensive, and less nutritious.

To avoid a climate catastrophe, the scientists are calling for better land use, the reduction of food waste, and a dietary shift away from meat-based foods to become immediate priorities.

Through her research, Professor Little has found that all hope is not lost for the future of global food security. She states that "farmers, scientists, activists, and engineers the world over are radically rethinking food production."

"I learned through research in more than a dozen countries and as many states that human innovation, which marries new and old approaches to food production and land management, can build climate resilience and redefine sustainable food on a grand scale."

The harmful relationship between sea turtles and light pollution has emerged as an important consideration in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/baby-sea-turtles-dying-plastic/">sea turtle</a> conservation. What is less known is the relationship between sea turtles and the tourists who visit them, and subsequently encourage increased development along pristine shorelines.

Light is an important navigation tool for sea turtles. But human interference through artificial light threatens to distort sea turtles’ ability to navigate and survive.

When newborn sea turtles first hatch on the beach they will stay beneath the sand and wait to emerge until nighttime after the temperature has cooled down, according to the<a href="https://myfwc.com/research/wildlife/sea-turtles/threats/artificial-lighting/"> Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission</a>.

Hatchlings will instinctively move towards the brightest area, which would naturally be the ocean, glowing from the reflection of the night sky. In an era of rapid human expansion, this is often not the case. Turtles may mistakenly follow the light shining from street lights and buildings where they are at an increased risk of mortality from fatigue, predation, dehydration, and collision with vehicles.

Light pollution may also impact mother sea turtles as they attempt to nest. In 2014, a<a href="https://conserveturtles.org/lights-out-for-sea-turtles/"> loggerhead turtle</a> looking to nest became disoriented by lights from a nearby condo and wandering into a street where she was struck and killed by a vehicle. Mothers may also refuse to nest on beaches where there are high levels of light pollution making it more difficult for her to successfully nest.

Similar to the glow of artificial lights, the scale of this problem is wide-reaching. It is<a href="https://www.darksky.org/our-work/sea-turtle-conservation/"> estimated</a> that millions of sea turtle hatchlings die as a result of light pollution every year in Florida alone. Sea turtles are considered among the<a href="https://www.fws.gov/home/feature/2007/seaturtles2.pdf"> world’s most imperiled wildlife</a> and six of the seven species are at risk of extinction.

Despite the dire state of the world’s sea turtles, light pollution is becoming increasingly more prevalent. A 2019<a href="https://zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/acv.12480"> study</a> found that less than one-third of the world’s Key Biodiversity Areas have completely pristine night skies and around one-half lie entirely under artificially bright skies.

Light pollution may be especially exacerbated near coastal destinations where tourists flock to visit sea turtles in person. Although many tourists likely visit sea turtles for altruistic reasons, the boom of this industry encourages increased development along shorelines. With urbanization comes lights from hotels, condos, restaurants, street lights and vehicles.

Compounding the issue further is the fact that many sea turtles hatch during the peak tourist season of summer and early fall.

Researchers examining the effect of tourism on sea turtle conservation on the island of Sal, Cape Verde Islands<a href="http://193.136.21.50/bitstream/10961/1547/1/Taylor%20%26%20Cozens%20Tourism-Turtles%20Sal.pdf"> found</a> a marked increase in the percentage of nests that needed to be moved each year due to light pollution. At one popular tourist spot, all of the sea turtle nests needed to be moved for two consecutive years.

In the United States, sea turtle tourism is prevalent in Florida, the home to<a href="https://conserveturtles.org/information-sea-turtles-threats-artificial-lighting/"> over 90%</a> of all sea turtle nesting in the continental United States and the largest population of loggerheads in the Western Hemisphere.

As an ecologically significant sea turtle hot-spot, the government and conservation groups have worked to control the state’s light pollution. These programs look to use the latest technology to mitigate the glow of artificial lights or simply encourage private properties to use less light altogether. To date,<a href="https://f50006a.eos-intl.net/ELIBSQL12_F50006A_Documents/TR-2Rev2.pdf"> at least 82 municipalities</a> in Florida have adopted lighting ordinances to regulate artificial lighting.

<a href="https://zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/rse2.12">Research</a> shows that these conservation initiatives have successfully reduced light pollution on beaches despite Florida’s expanding coastal development.

Mitigating light pollution can be an opportunity for the tourism sector to attract eco-conscious travelers and create a cozy and intimate environment by using soft lighting and candles at night.

Tourists can help encourage sustainable tourism by enquiring about light pollution before booking a stay at a coastal hotel. Additionally, local governments should not wait on private businesses to address light pollution and should designate priority areas for sea turtle conservation and adopt lighting ordinances.

Globally, over a billion people are threatened by mosquito-borne viruses, such as <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-dengue-fever/">dengue</a>, chikungunya, and Zika. A new study published in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/">PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases</a> is warning that the combination of climate change and rising temperatures will expose more people to diseases carried by mosquitoes.

The most extreme increases in disease transmission are predicted to occur under intermediate climate change conditions. In particular, the study was focused on Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, mosquitoes that were once found mainly in Africa and the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia.

A team led by Sadie Ryan at the <a href="http://www.ufl.edu/">University of Florida</a> modified a previously developed Bayesian transmission model to analyze how climate change will impact virus-carrying mosquitoes. The adapted model enabled the researchers to track shifting global warming scenarios to determine where mosquitoes will migrate and how the number of disease transmissions will change over the next century.

The study results show that when the mosquito range shifts within optimal temperature ranges for transmission, we can expect poleward shifts in Aedes-borne virus distributions. 

Human exposure to mosquito-borne viruses is predicted to increase in Europe, while transmission from Ae. albopictus may decrease in southeast Asia and west Africa when when the worst-case scenario is applied. Surprisingly, a middle-of-the-road temperature increase could produce the largest expansion in viral transmission by Ae. albopictus. This contradicts theories that predict an increase in temperature will run parallel with a rise in illness.

“The dynamics of mosquito-borne illnesses are climate-driven, and current work suggests that climate change will dramatically increase the potential for expansion and intensification of Aedes-borne virus transmission within the next century,” wrote the researchers.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>.

Climate change contributes to global economic inequality. Economic inequality between lower income and more prosperous countries has decreased in recent years, narrowing a problematic gap in national GDPs worldwide. 

However, a new study has found that global warming is providing ample room for colder climate countries like Norway to thrive while warm climate countries like India suffer economic declines. 

In the world’s poorest countries, global warming decreased potential income earnings per person by 17 to 30 percent. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> conducted the study, and the results show that the gap between countries with the lowest and highest economies is 25 percent larger than it would have been due to climate change. 

The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“Our results show that most of the poorest countries on Earth are considerably poorer than they would have been without global warming,” said Noah Diffenbaugh, the lead author of the study. “At the same time, the majority of rich countries are richer than they would have been.”

The researchers built on previous data covering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-global-warming-hurts-the-world-economy/">50 years of annual temperature and GDP measurement comparisons</a> for 165 countries. 

Climate warming over the past 50 years benefitted colder countries but dragged down warm climate countries. 

“The historical data clearly show that crops are more productive, people are healthier and we are more productive at work when temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold,” said Marshall Burke, a co-author of the study. “This means that in cold countries, a little bit of warming can help. The opposite is true in places that are already hot.”

For this study, the researchers wanted to see how economic outputs would have changed given different climate scenarios depending on the country. 

The researchers analyzed data from more than 20 climate models and calculated more than 20,0000 annual economic growth rates per country under a no climate change scenario. 

The decline in economic growth rate for many warm, low-income countries, is the result of years and years of accumulating impacts from climate change. In India, the researchers found that the economy is 31 percent smaller than it would have been without global warming. 

“For most countries, whether global warming has helped or hurt economic growth is pretty certain,” said Burke. “There's essentially no uncertainty that they've [tropical countries] been harmed. It's a huge loss compared to where these countries would have been otherwise."

The study shows how climate change has impacted national economies for countries at either end of the climate spectrum, but for middle latitude countries like the US where climate change has been less pronounced, economic output has not been as greatly impacted. 

“A few of the largest economies are near the perfect temperature for economic output. Global warming hasn't pushed them off the top of the hill, and in many cases, it has pushed them toward it,” said Burke. “But a large amount of warming in the future will push them further and further from the temperature optimum.”

The researchers warn that as climate change increases and global temperatures rise, vulnerable economies will be further impacted. 

“The more these countries warm up, the more drag there's going to be on their development,” said Diffenbaugh said. “Historically, rapid economic development has been powered by fossil fuels. Our finding that global warming has exacerbated economic inequality suggests that there is an added economic benefit of energy sources that don't contribute to further warming.”

A new way to make fertilizer and produce fewer emissions. Fertilizers are vital to the world’s agricultural industries and without healthy, fertile soils, plants and crops would not get the nutrients they need to grow. 

Fertilizers help local and global agricultural operations meet rising food demands, but the production process for fertilizer emits large amounts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-nitrogen-is-great-for-crops-but-bad-for-the-environment/">greenhouse gasses</a>. 

It all boils down to ammonia, a key ingredient in many fertilizers. To make ammonia, fertilizer production uses an old process first developed in the early 1900s called the Haber-Bosch process. 

The <a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/Haber-Bosch-process">Haber-Bosch process</a> takes hydrogen and nitrogen from the air and combines them using high pressures and temperatures which then produces ammonia. 

The problem with the Haber-Bosch process is that it requires an immense amount of energy to produce and so ammonia manufacturers rely on fossil fuels which produce large amounts of emissions. 

The ammonia industry accounts for over 1 percent of annual greenhouse gas emissions, according to <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24232273-500-clever-chemistry-could-make-fertiliser-with-a-smaller-carbon-footprint/">New Scientist</a>. 

Chemists have long been looking for alternative ways to manufacture ammonia without producing harmful emissions, and now researchers from the<a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/"> University of Tokyo</a> may have finally found a scalable solution to the problem. 

The researchers successfully created a catalyst for making ammonia from nitrogen that works at room temperature and doesn’t require high pressures using molybdenum iodide. 

The team also found a way to use readily available compounds like alcohol or water as a reactive agent to combine with the molybdenum iodide. Not only does this process produce fewer emissions, but it’s also faster. 

“The ammonia production rate is 500 times faster than that of the Haber-Bosch process,”  Yoshiaki Nishibayashi, a member of the research team, told New Scientist. 

The team hopes that their new methods could be used at the industrial scale and will continue to refine and perfect the production process. 

A study detailing the alternative fertilizer production process was published in the journal Nature.

An international research team led by the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> has conducted the first global assessment of the impacts to native species by <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/invasive-rusty-crayfish-demise/">invasive species</a>. The experts wanted to measure the extent of the damage as invaders become more widespread and abundant. 

“What surprised me most was the magnitude of some of these effects,” said study lead author and invasion ecologist Professor Bethany Bradley. “Invasive animal pests, like Emerald Ash Borer or lionfish, cause nearly a 50 percent decline in native populations. That's the average case - on average, invasive pests will cut the populations of native species in half if we don't prevent or control those invasions.”

According to Professor Bradley, as alien garlic mustard invades forest understory in New England, the number of native sugar maple seedlings declines. Across the region’s wetlands, invasive purple loosestrife is linked to declines in native red-winged blackbirds and song sparrows.

“Our principal finding is that if the invasive species is at a higher trophic level, that is, they are likely eating the native species, then just a few invasive individuals can cause a sharp decline in native populations,” said Professor Bradley. “Once those invaders reach higher abundance, the damage has long ago been done. This has big implications for management. Early detection becomes critical.”

The investigation was based on the analysis of 1,258 case studies from 201 published research papers. Professor Bradley said that one of the primary goals was to understand how impacts accumulate during an invasion in order to support evidence-based management.

“We know that invasive species have negative impacts, but past meta-analyses have only looked at studies where invaders were absent vs. present.”

Professor Bradley explained that for native species faced with an invader at the same trophic level, where the two are likely competing for resources, there is a “strong negative linear response," but no sharp initial decline. “As you increase invasive species' abundance, the native species decline in abundance and in community diversity. The management implications are that if you control the invasion at any point, it's a win for ecosystems.”

On the other hand, when an invader enters at a lower trophic level than the native species, the results were not as clear.

“It could be creating new resources or it could compete against resources that the natives need. It's not clear whether the effects will be positive or negative, unless you're talking about terrestrial plants. Invasive plants are likely to have negative effects on native insects.”


Ultimately, the study authors concluded that “increasing the abundance of invasive alien species has pronounced negative impacts on native species populations and communities.” They said the fact that rapid declines in native populations have been found to occur at initial stages of the invasion process “highlights the increasing need for early detection and rapid response (EDRR) to new invasive alien species.”

“Avoiding the ecological impacts of invasive species will require a much stronger commitment to proactive policies designed to prevent novel introductions as well as increased management targeting the early stages of invasion.”

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.



As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.

Scientists have made a startling discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn's moon Mimas</a>. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. "Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.

Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.

According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.

During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.

Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
