Hotter summers are not just uncomfortable, they also changing the odds of getting sick from food. A new analysis links warmer air, higher moisture, specific dewpoint ranges, and longer daylight to spikes in Salmonella infections across two European countries. 



The team showed that risk climbs when average temperatures rise above about 50°F and days stretch past 12 to 15 hours.



Lead author <a href="https://www.londonntd.org/research/researchers/laura-c-gonzalez-villeta" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Laura C. González Villeta</a> of the University of Surrey’s <a href="https://www.surrey.ac.uk/school-veterinary-medicine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Veterinary Medicine</a> led work that tied laboratory confirmed Salmonella cases to local weather conditions using a transparent statistical approach.



The bacteria called Salmonella cause <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/15697-salmonella" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food poisoning</a> that often brings diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Common symptoms usually start within hours to a few days and most people recover without treatment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmonella-and-the-weather">Salmonella and the weather</h2>



Researchers linked daily case counts from the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-health-security-agency" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Health Security Agency</a> to detailed weather from the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Met Office</a>, then checked the model with national surveillance data from the Netherlands. 



They examined 14 factors, including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, sunshine, and dewpoint temperature.



Instead of forcing a complex equation to fit the data, the group calculated a conditional incidence that directly describes how often cases occur when specific combinations of weather are present. 



That method lets you see which trio of conditions lines up with higher infection counts without hiding the signal inside a black box.



The approach showed consistency when moved from one country to another after accounting for reporting differences. That matters because public <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/to-get-fit-and-stay-healthy-walk-this-exact-distance-every-day/">health</a> tools work best when they travel across borders without losing accuracy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-model-found">What the model found</h2>



Risk rose when average air temperatures topped roughly 50°F, day length sat between 12 and 15 hours, and dewpoint hovered around the mid 40s to about 50°F. The same pattern appeared regardless of location.



Not every weather knob seemed important. Wind speed, air pressure, and sunshine duration had little or no association with reported cases in this dataset.



Seasonal peaks in late summer were reproduced when the model fed on local weather. That gave officials a way to anticipate risk based on last week’s skies rather than waiting for lab reports to trickle in.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-weather-boosts-salmonella">How weather boosts Salmonella</h2>



Broader evidence lines up with these findings. A large <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11530612/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meta-analysis</a> of 23 Salmonella studies found about a 5 percent rise in risk for every 1.8°F increase in temperature.



Europe’s outbreak history shows why this topic matters. In 2018, nearly one in three foodborne outbreaks in the European Union were caused by Salmonella, according to an EFSA <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/news/salmonella-most-common-cause-foodborne-outbreaks-european-union" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>.



That baseline risk has not disappeared in recent years. Surveillance summaries still identify Salmonella as a leading cause of foodborne outbreaks across the region, with eggs and mixed foods often involved, as noted in EFSA’s public <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/7666" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">publication</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-public-health">What this means for public health</h2>



“The study highlights how weather plays a significant role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-are-overlooked-sources-of-antibiotic-resistant-salmonella/">Salmonella</a> outbreaks and provides a valuable tool for predicting future risks and tailoring interventions, particularly in the context of climate change,” said Dr. Villeta. The work is not just about describing patterns.&nbsp;



Weather aware forecasting can help agencies time inspections, target hygiene messaging, and plan surge capacity when the odds of illness tick up. 



Food businesses can also adjust cold chain checks, staff training, and consumer advice when riskier conditions line up.



Individuals are not powerless either. Keep cold foods cold, cook poultry and eggs to safe temperatures, refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours, and wash hands and surfaces, especially when the air is warm and the day runs long.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-tech-forecasting-tools">High-tech forecasting tools</h2>



Most forecasting tools lean on regression or time series fits that struggle with tangled, non linear interactions. 



The conditional incidence approach shows how combinations of temperature, humidity, and daylight align with cases, which is easier to interpret and to explain.



That clarity helps separate what drives risk from noise. It also allows public health teams to identify factor combinations that do not explain much, saving effort where it will not pay off.



Model outputs replicated real world peaks and mapped risk at fine spatial scales. That is the level where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childrens-screen-time-shapes-their-mental-health-as-teens/">health</a> departments and food producers make day to day choices.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limits-and-next-steps">Limits and next steps</h2>



The model tracks reported cases, which understate total infections. Even so, de trending and validation across two countries suggest the weather signals are real.



Future tests in different climates and income settings would show how far the method travels. Adding data on livestock density, land use, and consumer behavior could sharpen predictions without losing transparency.



Better early warnings do not replace basic food safety, but they can make those steps more timely. That is useful as warmer summers and longer heat seasons become more common.



The study is published in the <a href="https://www.journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-4453(25)00004-0/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal of Infection</a>.

Warmer weather is impacting global food supply, but not in the way you think

According to a new study from researchers at <a href="https://montereybay.noaa.gov/">California's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary</a>, microplastics, those being bits of consumer product-derived plastic debris measuring less than 5 millimeters across, which are commonly found from ocean surface to sea floor, are also entering the marine food web of Monterey Bay.

This study, published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/srep/">Scientific Reports</a>, is the first to systematically look at <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-natural-carbon-storage/">microplastic</a> contamination via repeated sampling at the same locations and ranges of depths.

Small ocean animals are currently consuming microplastic, which therefore introduces the debris to the entire marine food web.

"Our findings buttress a growing body of scientific evidence pointing to the waters and animals of the deep sea, Earth's largest habitat, as the biggest repository of small plastic debris," said lead author Anela Choy, a former postdoctoral fellow at the <a href="https://www.mbari.org/">Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute</a> (MBARI) and current assistant professor at <a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/">Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego</a>. "Our study demonstrates a link between microplastics distributed across the water column and entry of this foreign material into marine food webs by important marine animals, such as pelagic crabs and giant larvaceans."

"This research shows how we can leverage scientific, engineering and conservation expertise to develop new technology that provides powerful insights into how humans are impacting the ocean,” added MBARI engineer Kakani Katija.

To better understand the impact of microplastic on marine life, the research team used MBARI's underwater robots, each equipped with sampling devices, to obtain and filter ocean water from two different locations in Monterey Bay. Some samples were taken from just 5 meters below the surface, whereas others were taken about 1,000 meters below the surface.

They found almost identical concentrations of microplastics in samples taken from waters near the surface and at the deepest levels. They also found four times the concentration of microplastics in midwater ranges than in waters near the surface.

Choy and her team then observed two filter-feeding marine species, pelagic red crabs and giant larvaceans, to see if microplastic invaded the food web. Unsurprisingly, it has — microplastic was found in all of the animals surveyed. 

A team of researchers from <a href="https://www.asu.edu/">Arizona State University</a> (ASU) concluded that the most common plastics found in the samples taken were polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamide, and polycarbonate, all of which are most commonly used for consumer products like food and beverage packaging. Furthermore, all of the plastic sampled was weathered, suggesting in had been in the environment for months or years. And most of the particles were collected more offshore than nearshore.

"This suggests that most of the particles did not originate from local fishing gear," said coauthor Kyle Van Houtan, chief scientist at <a href="https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/">Monterey Bay Aquarium</a>. "It also suggests that at least some of the microplastic was transported into the area by ocean currents."

"These results are intriguing and show the need for similar deep-water surveys in other locations, so we can find out how widespread the problem is,” said coauthor Bruce Robison, a senior scientist at MBARI.

"The ubiquitous presence of plastic pollution throughout the water column points to source reduction--making and using less plastic in the first place--as one of the most effective means of solving this issue," Van Houtan said. "It may be virtually impossible to remove existing microplastic from the deep sea," he continued. "But when we slow the flow of plastic from land, we can help prevent the increasing accumulation of plastic in our global ocean."

Heavy exposure to black carbon is like smoking a pack a day for 15 years. Breathing in black carbon from diesel fumes, coal power plants, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-much-black-carbon-is-left-behind-after-a-forest-fire/">forest fires</a> increases the number of small blood vessels in the lungs, and exposure to high levels of black carbon causes the same amount of lung damage as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 15 years. 

Researchers led by <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/">Columbia University</a> professor Dr. Carrie Pistenmaa Aaron observed for the first time the impact that breathing in tiny black carbon particles has on the peripheral blood vessels in the lungs. 

Even small amounts of particles could increase the risk of developing lung disease, which is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Heavy exposure to black carbon is like smoking a pack a day for 15 years 

The results of the study were published in the journal European Respiratory Journal.  

“A few previous studies have suggested a link between air pollution and the pulmonary circulation, but we wanted to evaluate whether there were associations between chronic air pollution exposure and the vascular structure of the lungs,” said Aaron. “We were interested in the lung vasculature as we think it may be related to chronic lung conditions.”

For the study, the researchers reviewed data from the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/air-research/multi-ethnic-study-atherosclerosis-mesa-air-study">National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Lung and Air Pollution Studies</a> which included information from more than 3,000 people across six cities in the US. 

The participants’ long-term exposure to outdoor air pollutants were recorded, and pulmonary blood vessels were measured with CT scans. 

Important factors like age, height, sex, history of smoking, and medical history were included in the data. 

The 3,000 participants were exposed to .8 micrograms of black carbon per cubic meter every year and 11 micrograms of fine particulate matter. 

While these levels are well below air pollution limits set by the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency</a> and the European Union, the researchers still found that black carbon exposure impacted blood vessels in the lungs. 

“Our findings suggest that long-term exposure to black carbon may impact the pulmonary circulation,” said Aaron. 

Because the study was based on cross-sectional observations, there are limits to the conclusions, but the researchers hope to further explore how black carbon impacts pulmonary blood vessels and lung disease risk. 

“No previous research has looked specifically at whether these changes in humans lead to disease, so we cannot say for certain how this may be affecting health,” said Aaron. “However, other studies of similar pulmonary vascular measures on CT and MRI in humans, in addition to a number of studies in animals, suggest that differences in the pulmonary vasculature might make people more likely to develop chronic lung disease.”

Despite numerous protests and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/majority-republicans-climate-change/">polls showing</a> that more and more people agree that climate change is a problem that demands action, many studies can overlook how social networks and human behaviors influence climate change and mitigation strategies. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://uwaterloo.ca/">University of Waterloo</a> and the <a href="https://www.uoguelph.ca/">University of Guelph</a> in Canada have developed a new climate modeling approach that factors in how social processes and human behavior influence global warming and climate. 

Our behavior and day to day interactions have a significant impact on the ecosystem, social networks, and climate. 

It’s well known that human activities are the primary driver of climate change and while countless studies examine how anthropogenic emissions are hurting the environment, very little attention is paid to how climate change influences human behavior. 

In a new study, published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1007000">PLOS Computational Biology</a>, the researchers created a mathematical model that incorporates social networks and climate systems into its equations as well as simulates how mitigation efforts influence human activity and behavior. 

“Mathematical models that capture social dynamics and their interaction with climate trends will become increasingly used in climate research,” said Chris Bauch, a co-author of the study. 

If researchers and policymakers alike have a better understanding of how human behavior influences climate change and vice versa, it could help create more effective mitigation strategies. 

The model showed that how soon or late a person hears about a friend’s climate change mitigation efforts has an impact on climate overall. 

For example, when a person sees that their friend installed an eco-friendly air-conditioner or bought an electric car on social media can have an impact on both climate and social systems. 

The slow pace of social learning could increase climate warming projections by more than one degree Celsius. 

The researchers also found that social norms have little impact on preventing rising temperatures, even if climate change mitigation is widespread. 

Instead, the model suggests that raising awareness is key and that speeding up social learning could help with making climate change mitigation more of a social norm. 

“There are pathways for humans to mitigate climate change, but processes driving behavior and norms at the individual and societal level will be essential to all of them, and our longstanding work on coupled human-environment systems applied here to climate change is providing direction in this regard,” said Madhur Anand a senior author of the study.

Our addiction to technology is causing an environmental disaster. As technology becomes faster, smarter and sleeker, we are increasingly tossing aside the old for the new. While playing with our latest iPhones, most of us spend little time reflecting on how our old phone will be <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/recycling-system-major-changes/">recycled</a>, and the long-lasting effects it will have on environmental and human health.

In the last ten years, many of us have gone through at least a few different smartphones- not to mention laptops, TVs, video game consoles and iPads. Sometimes we switch phones due to logistical reasons- our screen cracked or the phone was damaged by water. But in a time when every new technology release is the “next big thing”, we are tempted to ditch our perfectly usable technology in favor of new releases.

This trend is not just occurring in the United States but throughout the whole world. Today, more than<a href="https://www.gsma.com/mobileeconomy/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/The-Mobile-Economy-2018.pdf"> 5 billion</a> people have mobile devices. Disposable incomes in many developing countries are growing, allowing more people to access technology than ever before.

All of this technology needs to be disposed of somehow. But our waste management systems have not caught up to the technology craze. Electronic waste is now the fastest-growing waste stream in the world. In the United States, electronic waste accounts for<a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/02/how-do-we-tackle-the-fastest-growing-waste-stream-on-the-planet/"> up to 70%</a> of toxic waste in landfills.

Some of us may use recycling programs to dispose of old technology. But these options require consumers to complete multiple steps. In order to ensure the highest level of user participation, actions should be as easy as possible for people to follow. Many recycling programs need people to send their old technology in the mail. Other programs have people bring their old technology to retail stores or kiosks. Many people may opt to keep the technology stored away or simply discard of it in the garbage.Our addiction to technology is causing an environmental disaster

In 2016, only 20% of the<a href="http://collections.unu.edu/eserv/UNU:6341/Global-E-waste_Monitor_2017__electronic_single_pages_.pdf"> 44.7 million metric tonnes</a> of electronic waste was recycled. Technology that is not recycled often ends up landfills and incineration plants. Up to 90% of electronic waste is illegally traded or dumped, destined for developing countries in Africa and Asia. According to the<a href="https://www.unenvironment.org/news-and-stories/press-release/illegally-traded-and-dumped-e-waste-worth-19-billion-annually-poses"> United Nations Environment Programme</a>, electronic waste is exported undetected by being declared as plastic and metal scraps.

Once in developing countries, locals extract elements such as copper and gold from the waste as a source of income. Extraction methods such as burning cables risk exposing people to hazardous substances, the<a href="https://www.who.int/ceh/risks/ewaste/en/"> World Health Organization</a> warns. People may become directly exposed to lead, cadmium, flame retardants and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These dangerous substances can also leak into the peoples’ soil, water and food.

The illegal dumping of electronic waste is also depleting our planet of the valuable raw materials used to make modern technology. When technology is not properly recycled, raw materials cannot be reused for future items. Rather, more materials have to be extracted from the earth. The extraction of raw materials currently accounts for<a href="http://collections.unu.edu/eserv/UNU:6341/Global-E-waste_Monitor_2017__electronic_single_pages_.pdf"> seven percent</a> of the world’s energy consumption.

These raw materials, including gold and silver, are often referred to as “<a href="https://reliefweb.int/report/democratic-republic-congo/tech-supply-chains-risk-links-human-rights-abuses-outside-conflict">conflict metals</a>” as their mining has been linked to armed conflict and human rights abuses.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to coltan- a rare ore used in the production of smartphones, laptops and video game consoles. Mining sites are often in prime habitat for the critically endangered Grauer’s gorilla. Mining activities destroy the gorilla’s habitat and exacerbate poaching pressures.

The electronic waste crisis has no easy solution. The problem spans throughout the world, crossing multiple countries with differing laws. Currently,<a href="http://collections.unu.edu/eserv/UNU:6341/Global-E-waste_Monitor_2017__electronic_single_pages_.pdf"> 66% of the world’s population</a> is covered by electronic waste management laws and 188 countries are signatories to an international treaty regulating the export of electronic waste. Yet, electronic waste legislation may not always be properly enforced or strong enough to fully address the issue.

As our addiction to technology continues, the pile of electronic waste is only going to grow. It is estimated that we will generate<a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_A_New_Circular_Vision_for_Electronics.pdf"> 120 million tonnes</a> of electronic waste in 2050 alone if nothing changes.

Legislation alone is unlikely to tackle an issue this grand. A societal shift in consumer behavior is needed. Years ago, people needing to replace their technology often bought used gadgets online or from friends. Today, the idea of going on eBay to buy a used phone instead of upgrading to a newer model is unimaginable to many people.

A recent World Economic Forum<a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_A_New_Circular_Vision_for_Electronics.pdf"> report</a> urges the world to move towards a zero electronic waste circular economy. In this economy, products are specifically designed for reuse, durability and recycling and product lifetimes are extended through refurbishment and second hand markets.

We are fast approaching the fifth generation of mobile networks- called 5G.<a href="https://www.techradar.com/news/5g-phones-what-are-the-first-5g-phones"> Over 30 new devices</a> are expected to be rolled out in 2019 that can access the network. The new 5G technology will undoubtedly result in a wave of consumers. And a wave of discarded technology.

If we don’t come up with a solution to electronic waste soon, we might end up drowning in our gadgets.

An international team of researchers has investigated how human activities during the Roman Empire may have impacted the climate in Europe. The experts found that a large amount of fires burned by ancient Romans triggered <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/visiting-city-air-pollution-breathing-issues/">air pollution</a> that cooled down the climate across the country. 

Anina Gilgen of <a href="https://www.ethz.ch/en.html">ETH Zurich</a> was the lead author of the study. "We looked for the first time at whether anthropogenic aerosol impacts had an impact on climate a long time ago," Gilgen told <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/">New Scientist</a>.

The analysis adds to a growing collection of research which suggests that humans have been influencing the atmosphere and climate for thousands of years. The team estimated the amount of air pollution, such as soot, that may have been produced.

The researchers combined a global aerosol-enabled climate model with land use maps and new estimates of aerosol emissions from the Roman Empire.  

They determined that the cooling effect of air pollution would have lowered the temperature across Europe by 0.3 degrees Fahrenheit. However, an exceptionally warm climate likely countered this effect. 

The Roman Warm Period, which lasted from around 250 BC to 400 AD, was an unusually hot period that occurred at the height of the empire. Previous studies have shown that this was a natural phenomenon. 

The team found that while greenhouse gases and deforestation warmed the atmosphere by 0.27 degrees Fahrenheit, air pollution had a larger influence on cooling. Activities such as burning crop residue or wood to heat homes would have potentially altered the climate in different ways. 

According to New Scientist, human activities affected the atmosphere and temperatures in Europe and Southeast Asia as far back as 7,000 years ago. 

"Our model may overestimate aerosol-effective radiative forcing, however, and our results are very sensitive to the inferred seasonal timing of agricultural burning practices and natural aerosol emissions over land," wrote the study authors. "Nevertheless, it is likely that human influence on land and the atmosphere affected continental-scale climate during Classical Antiquity."

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.climate-of-the-past.net/">Climate of the Past</a>.

While he has since shifted from his bold claims that climate change was a hoax perpetrated by China, Trump refuses to acknowledge the countless studies, and even the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trump-denies-federal-climate-report/">assessment from within his own Administration</a>, that state in no uncertain terms that temperatures are on the rise. 

The latest appeal to Trump to take climate change seriously came from Prince Charles, who sat down with the President for 90 minutes during Trump’s visit to the UK.Amidst royal pressure overseas, Trump says climate change goes ‘both ways’ 

Prince Charles has been a strong proponent of climate change mitigation strategies and has spoken loudly about climate issues and reducing emissions. 

Puzzlingly, Trump still maintains that climate change goes “both ways.”

It’s not a new argument, and many climate change dissenters like to point out that weather extremes are nothing new in our globe’s history. 

In an interview on Good Morning Britain, Piers Morgan asked the President if he personally “believed in climate change,” to which Trump responded: 

“I believe that there’s a change in weather, and I think it changes both ways,” Trump said. “Don’t forget it used to be called global warming. That wasn’t working. Then it was called climate change. Now it’s actually called extreme weather, because with extreme weather, you can’t miss.”

To help prove his point, Trump cited several examples of past weather extremes.

“Forty years ago, we had the worst tornado binge we’ve ever had,” Trump said. “In the 1890s, we had our worst hurricanes.”

Study after study shows that weather extremes will become increasingly more frequent and severe in the coming years, and the reality is that temperatures are rising. 

The past several years have been the <a href="https://climate.nasa.gov/news/2841/2018-fourth-warmest-year-in-continued-warming-trend-according-to-nasa-noaa/">warmest in recorded history</a> since 1880. With record low sea ice extent, mass coral bleaching events due increases in ocean acidity and the increases in carbon dioxide emissions, and it’s hard to draw any other conclusion. 

When asked about emissions, Trump hastily put the blame on China and Russia. 

However, the United State is one of the worlds largest emitters of greenhouse gasses, and CO2 emissions from the US rose<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-spiked-in-2018--and-it-couldnt-happen-at-a-worse-time/2019/01/07/68cff792-12d6-11e9-803c-4ef28312c8b9_story.html?utm_term=.4321ab6298d2"> 3.4 percent in 2018</a>, according to a report conducted by the <a href="https://rhg.com/">Rhodium Group</a>, an independent economic research firm. 

President Trump remains adamant and seems willing to do anything to sway the stats in his favor, including establishing a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/white-house-panel-climate-change/">climate panel to reassess scientific studies</a> on climate change.

Amidst royal pressure overseas, Trump says climate change goes ‘both...

A shocking new report has found that if greenhouse gas emissions are left unchecked, <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/humans-driving-climate-change/">climate change</a> could trigger the beginning of the end for human civilization in just 30 years.

According to the report, a chain of environmental disasters could prompt an ecological disaster that could include pandemics, extreme flooding, forced human migration, and even result in nuclear war.

The report was published by the <a href="https://www.breakthroughonline.org.au/">Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration</a> in Melbourne, Australia and was authored by research director David Spratt and Ian Dunlop, a former chair of the Australian Coal Association and former executive at Shell. 

“A 2050 scenario is outlined in which accelerating climate-change impacts pose large negative consequences to humanity which might not be undone for centuries,” the researchers write.

The Paris Agreement was designed to keep emissions in check and limit global warming to 3 degrees Celsius. But after President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement, and other nations struggle to meet their promises, it is entirely possible that warming could exceed this amount if emissions are not kept in check.

If global temperatures continue to increase, it could push the Earth’s ecosystems past certain climate thresholds and cause irreversible damage.

According to the research, more than half the world’s population will endure 100 days of deadly heat each year, and these heat waves would prompt wildfires and severe drought. This in turn would lead to mass extinctions and the collapse of entire ecosystems.  

Meanwhile, severe flooding would make certain parts of the globe completely uninhabitable and prompt mass mandatory relocation.

“This scenario provides a glimpse into a world of ‘outright chaos’ on a path to the end of human civilization and modern society as we have known it, in which the challenges to global security are simply overwhelming and political panic becomes the norm,” the report reads.

“What can be done to avoid such a probable but catastrophic future? It is clear from our preliminary scenario that dramatic action is required this decade if the ‘hothouse Earth’ scenario is to be avoided. To reduce this risk and protect human civilisation, a massive global mobilisation of resources is needed in the coming decade to build a zero-emissions industrial system and set in train the restoration of a safe climate.”

Researchers Stephan V. Sobolev of the <a href="https://www.gfz-potsdam.de/en/home/">German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ</a> and the <a href="https://www.uni-potsdam.de/en/university-of-potsdam.html">University of Potsdam</a>, and Michael Brown of the <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a> have found that natural lubrication caused by surface-erosion debris was responsible for kicking off and maintaining plate tectonics, a natural process that shifted the continents. 

Since the 1960s, scientists have understood that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/tectonic-plates-less-stable/">plate tectonics</a> is driven by deep-mantle convection, a thermodynamic process that stirs hot and cold matter within the Earth. Therefore, it was believed that plate tectonics was only dependent on deep-Earth processes, such as the cooling of Earth’s mantle. But Sobolev and Brown suggest that surface erosion also played a vital role in plate tectonic evolution.

"Our hypothesis is counter-intuitive,” Sobolev said. "That was the main problem for us and we expect will be the main problem for the community to accept our ideas."

Using already-available geological and geochemical data, which showed evidence of plate tectonic movement starting about 2.5 to 3 billion years ago — the same time Earth's continents rose above sea level, Sobolev and Brown hypothesized that the evolution of plate tectonics was controlled by the continents’ shift above sea level and the major surface erosion events that followed

These erosion processes, such as the one that followed the global “Snowball Earth” glaciations that occurred 700 to 600 million years ago, produced continental sediments that worked as lubricant for subduction, a crucial process of plate tectonics, that reduced friction between the subducting plate and overriding plate.

"We suggested our hypothesis based on global geodynamic models of plate tectonics and regional models of subduction in the South American Andes,” Sobolev explained. "Then we used published geological and geochemical data to verify the hypothesis. Only the synergetic combination of all these disciplines made this study possible."

More geochemical data is required to effectively test their hypothesis, Sobolev and Brown note.

"It must be fully quantified, which in turn will require coupled modelling of deep mantle convection and plate tectonics, surface processes and even climate, which is an important factor controlling surface erosion. That is an exciting challenge for the Earth system modeling community,” Sobolev said. "This will require building new types of models tightly linking deep Earth and surface processes."

The new theory is published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

President Donald Trump’s EPA Administrator <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/andrew-wheeler-confirmed-epa-administrator/">Andrew Wheeler</a> is blaming the press for casting climate change in a bad light. 

Wheeler’s red herring fallacy instead urges the press and public to shift their perceptions and focus to all the good that the EPA and other government initiatives have done to protect the environment. 

“We need to fix this perception, and we need the help of the press,” Wheeler said while addressing the National Press Club earlier this week. “The public needs to know how far we’ve come, as a nation, protecting the environment.”

For Wheeler, focusing on the ever increasing severity of climate change and the countless studies that project increasing temperatures, sea level rise, extreme weather events, crop failure, displacement of millions of people, and mass extinctions does a “disservice” to the American public. 

The EPA Administrator started his speech to the National Press Club by citing a Gallup poll that found that people have an increasingly negative view of the condition of the environment in America. 

“Every year since 2001 Gallup has conducted polling on the same question: Do you think the quality of the environment in the country as a whole is getting better or getting worse? Every year since 2001 more people have said, ‘Getting worse than getting better’” Wheeler said. “We need to fix this perception and we need the help of the press. The public needs to know how far we’ve come as a nation protecting the environment.”

According to <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/discounting-climate-change-epa-chief-faults-the-media-for-the-rise-of-bad-environmental-news-202438510.html">Yahoo News</a>, Wheeler accused the press of “alarmist coverage” and not promoting the positives of the EPA, such as the improvements to air quality made since the agency’s establishment in the 1970s.  

The EPA Administrator also dislikes how much the media focuses on his past coal lobbying days. 

It’s no secret that the Trump Administration has been working hard to roll back environmental protections put in place during the Obama Administration. 

While the EPA has worked to clean the environment and improve air quality through the years, you don’t have to dig too far back to find instances when policy, pushback, budget cuts, and economic gains put <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-protect-environment/">environmental protections on the back burner</a> in favor of whichever Administrative agenda was in power at the time.

Animals often leave behind traces that reveal their role in the ecosystem. If you walk past a fence post in an open prairie or a small patch of trees amidst a grassland in North America, you might find a small sign of the remnant bison populations. On these upright posts or tree trunks, tufts of dark brown fur cling in shaggy clumps. 

Bison are known for scratching themselves on any number of upright objects and their fur gets easily caught in the cracks or bark. Once bison were despised for (among other things) knocking over telegraph poles planted across the prairie. It’s possible that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/bison-american-survival-story/">bison</a> were also significantly important in keeping trees out of the prairies by knocking them over when scratching.Animals often leave behind traces that reveal their role in the ecosystem 

Bison fur is often used by birds for nest material and the hair was used by Native Americans for making cordage, something that can still be done. Sometimes genetic studies are done simply by leaving hair traps to catch the fur of an animal like a brown bear (or potentially bison) that rubs against a tree or are attracted to bait. 

Footprints are the most obvious and readily noticed sign of animals in a landscape, but other signs like fur or scat often give greater context to an animal and connect it more deeply to the landscape.

Dung can tell you a lot about an animal. Some scat is easily assigned to an animal. In Australia, little cubes of dung, one of the strangest shapes for droppings, are made by wombats. Hiking in the US, the apple-like dung from wild horses is obvious as are pats of dung from cattle or bison. Some scat requires looking closer to identify. As repugnant as dung may be, it gives interesting clues to the life of an animal.

Sometimes scat appears to be little more than a tangle of fur, one of the animal parts not easily digested. Fur in scat is sure evidence that the scat came from a carnivore. In survival situations, it might be a useful clue to examine droppings and determine what other animals are eating, although this isn’t foolproof. Droppings also show the ecological importance of an animal. Seeds found in droppings show one way in which a plant is dispersed across a landscape. Delicate bone shards can show the truth of a predatory relationship. Fresh scat may alert you to the near proximity of an animal, perhaps even an animal carefully watching you from a hiding spot. For many animals, dung is a way to track down prey.

Animals like sloths climb from trees to bury their waste, so as not to attract unwanted predators to their tree. Others like some caterpillars have evolved the ability to shoot their ‘frass’ (dung) long distances to avoid attention from predators or wasps that inject them with their eggs to be eaten from the inside out. When you see dung, remember that it’s an important insight into the animals life, so important that animals want to hide that data from those who would eat them.

Similar to dung are owl pellets that you may have poked through in school. Owl pellets are the harder elements of an owls food that are vomited up after digestion. Other birds create pellets but what makes owls so special is that their stomach acid is mild enough to leave more bones and fur intact, so you can actually make reasonable guesses as to what the owl was eating. 

When I collected data on sea birds in Alaska, startled chicks would sometimes vomit a chunky, fishy stew which we collected. It turns out vomit can be important for science, as it’s one of the easiest ways to see what an animal was eating and fear often leads to vomiting in birds. Ditching a bit of weight can mean that much faster getting off the ground for adult birds or a distraction. Carefully following animal traces like vomit or scat allow you to see through the eyes of a predator carefully teasing out clues of prey.

Predators themselves leave interesting and unique clues. Coyotes don’t usually hide their scat like the sloth. Instead, <a href="https://urbancoyoteresearch.com/coyote-info/signs-coyote-presence">Urban Coyote Project</a> points out that scat is used by coyotes to communicate. Coyote scat is often left in the middle of trails (including hiking trails which they sometimes use) and can be found even piled on rocks to make them more obvious. Coyote scat sometimes delineates a sort of territorial boundary for the canids.

Another sign of a predator is vertical scratches along a tree trunk. It may be that mountain lions are simply grooming their claws as many house cats do on sofas, but the <a href="https://mountainlion.org/featurearticlesign.asp">Mountain Lion Foundation</a> reports that some researchers also think this behavior is used for communication. Unfortunately scratches in a tree, it isn’t enough evidence that a mountain lion is nearby. Bears also mark trees with their claws. Sometimes bears also <a href="https://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/htmlpubs/htm03242832/page01.htm">strip the bark</a> from trees to get a carbohydrate rich snack in the green wood below the bark right as well. 

Tracks are sometimes quite obvious. Raccoon prints pressed into the drying mud around a small pond are hard to miss. It’s easy to stare at blurred, large dog tracks, wanting them to be mountain lion tracks before you notice the claw marks that make them obviously canine. Other traces left in the mud or dust of the earth are less obvious. 

The weird tracks of a sea turtle on the beach are reminiscent of tracks made by tanks before they’re washed away in the tide. Snakes leave sinuous trails in the dirt and sometimes lizards leave long drag marks from their tails. Even insects leave small tracks in the earth. Some like leaf cutter ants leave obviously groomed but minuscule trails, even through dense rainforests. 

Some trackers claim to glean enormous amounts of information from tracks, including the health of an animal or its intentions. But even without these abilities, looking closely at animal traces is a way to imagine yourself in the skin of another.

According to a new report from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a>, the average American consumes more than 70,000 particles of microplastics per year. So far, little is known about the health impacts associated with these particles. 

<a href="http://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-natural-carbon-storage/">Microplastics</a> are small pieces of plastic debris that result from the breakdown of larger products in the environment. Humans consume microplastics that have made their way into food, drinking water, and into the air. Some of the particles are small enough to enter human tissues, where they can trigger immune reactions or release toxic substances.

A team of researchers led by Kieran Cox set out to investigate the extent of microplastics that are inadvertently consumed by humans. The experts reviewed 26 previous studies that analyzed the amounts of plastic particles in fish, added sugars, salts, alcohol, drinking water, and in the air. 

Based on the recommended dietary intakes from the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the researchers analyzed how much of these particular foods are included in the daily diets of men, women, and children. 

The study revealed that the average American consumes between 74,000 and 121,000 particles per year, depending on age and sex. According to the research, people who drink only bottled water are exposed to an additional 90,000 microplastics annually compared with individuals who drink only tap water. 

Furthermore, the study authors explained that these estimates are probably low considering that only 15 percent of the average person's caloric intake was examined for the investigation. They added that further research is needed to understand the health effects of the ingested particles.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/journal/esthag">Environmental Science &amp; Technology</a>.

The average American consumes 70,000 plastic particles per year

A new study from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> is describing an underwater thoroughfare that facilitates the movement of nutrients from deep in the Earth to the surface waters off the coast of Antarctica. The researchers found that these nutrients trigger the explosive growth of microscopic ocean algae and create <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/robots-phytoplankton-absorb-co2/">phytoplankton blooms</a>.

The study suggests that hydrothermal vents on the seafloor, which eject scorching hot streams of mineral-rich fluid, may have a much larger impact on life near the ocean's surface and on the global carbon cycle than what was previously realized.

Study lead author Mathieu Ardyna said that the research provides the first observed evidence of iron from the depths of the Southern Ocean turning lifeless surface waters into hotspots for phytoplankton. These tiny algae are critical components of our planet because they produce oxygen, pull carbon dioxide out of the air, and form the foundation of the marine food web.

"Our study shows that iron from hydrothermal vents can well up, travel across hundreds of miles of open ocean and allow phytoplankton to thrive in some very unexpected places," said Ardyna.

Study senior author Kevin Arrigo added that the findings are "important because they show how intimately linked the deep ocean and surface ocean can be."

Looking at data recorded in 2014 and 2015 by a fleet of floating robots in the Southern Ocean, Ardyna found that two unexpectedly large blooms emerged more than 1,300 miles off the coast of Antarctica in an area that is not normally conducive to such an explosion of phytoplankton. Massive blooms in this region could only be possible with an influx of iron. 

The team quickly ruled out the most common sources of iron in the ocean, and theorized that the nutrient must be welling up from hydrothermal vents 750 miles from where the massive blooms had appeared. "It has long been known that hydrothermal vents create unique and profound oases of life," said Ardyna. 

The researchers tracked the flow of particles from the vents. The chlorophyll, phytoplankton, and helium data suggest that a powerful current circling Antarctica captures nutrients that rise up from the vents. Two powerful branches of the current then transport the nutrients eastward for a month or two before serving them to undernourished phytoplankton. 

Arrigo explained that, together with the arrival of spring sunshine that the phytoplankton need for photosynthesis, the nutrient delivery triggers a massive bloom that can likely absorb and store significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere.

"Hydrothermal vents are scattered all over the ocean floor," said Ardyna. "Much remains to be done to reveal other potential hotspots and quantify how this mechanism is altering the carbon cycle."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.



As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.

Scientists have made a startling discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn's moon Mimas</a>. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. By studying subtle irregularities in Mimas's orbit around Saturn, researchers detected the gravitational signature of liquid water hidden 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the moon's icy shell.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unlikely-ocean-world">An unlikely ocean world</h2>



At only 400 kilometers in diameter, Mimas seemed like the least likely candidate to harbor a subsurface ocean. Unlike other ocean moons such as Europa and Enceladus, which show clear surface signs of internal activity, Mimas displays no obvious hints of the liquid water beneath its ancient, crater-scarred exterior.



"Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.

Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.

Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
