A new study reports microbial DNA preserved inside woolly and steppe mammoth remains that are older than one million years. The team shows that some bacteria were living with these animals while they were alive, not just invading after death.



Researchers analyzed DNA from 483 specimens and sequenced 440 of them for the first time. From a steppe mammoth that lived about 1.1 million years ago, they even pieced together parts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-buried-for-millions-of-years-may-guide-search-for-alien-life/">bacterial</a> genomes that once infected or inhabited the animal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-microbes-in-mammoths">Ancient microbes in mammoths</h2>



The work was led by Benjamin Guinet, a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm (<a href="https://palaeogenetics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CPG</a>). The Centre is a collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (<a href="https://www.nrm.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NRM</a>).



"Our results push the study of microbial DNA back beyond a million years, opening up new possibilities to explore how host-associated microbes evolved in parallel with their hosts," said Guinet. 



The project involved an international team of experts working across multiple collections and labs.



The researchers used strict lab protocols, computational filters, and DNA damage checks to separate life stage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-found-alive-sealed-inside-rock-after-2-billion-years/">microbes</a> from postmortem contaminants. That approach helped them focus on organisms that were likely part of the mammoth’s own internal community.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-mammoth-dna">Inside mammoth DNA</h2>



The scientists kept finding the same six types of bacteria in mammoth remains from different times and places, including close relatives of Actinobacillus, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Erysipelothrix. 



This pattern suggests that these microbes had a long history with mammoths, sticking with them through environmental changes and population shifts.



The scientists distinguished host-associated microbes, meaning those living in or on a host while it was alive, from environmental bacteria that entered after burial. 



They used metagenomics, a method that reads all DNA in a sample at once, then identified ancient damage patterns to authenticate the oldest material.



From the 1.1 million year steppe mammoth, the team reconstructed partial genomes of Erysipelothrix that likely came from an infection during life. This is the oldest authenticated host-associated microbial DNA ever reported, and it extends the range for studying ancient host <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-aquificales-discovered-in-hot-springs-breathe-oxygen-and-sulfur-at-same-time/">microbe</a> interactions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ancient-microbes-matter">Why ancient microbes matter</h2>



This result builds on earlier work that recovered genome scale data from mammoth teeth more than one million years old, demonstrating that DNA can survive when conditions are right. 



The previous <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03224-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> established methods and expectations for data quality at this extreme age.



Ancient DNA is fragile and breaks into tiny pieces, and chemical changes accumulate over time. By tracking these signatures, scientists can tell ancient sequences from modern contamination and avoid false signals.



"As microbes evolve fast, obtaining reliable DNA data across more than a million years was like following a trail that kept rewriting itself," said study senior author Tom van der Valk.



"Our findings show that ancient remains can preserve biological insights far beyond the host genome, offering us perspectives on how microbes influenced adaptation, disease, and extinction in Pleistocene ecosystems."



The Pleistocene was a period from about 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago that included repeated ice ages.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-linked-to-mammoth-health">Microbes linked to mammoth health</h2>



One bacterium in the dataset is closely related to a Pasteurella species implicated in lethal outbreaks among African elephants. That connection is supported by a 2023 <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37880229/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> that identified a Pasteurella relative as the likely cause of fatal septicemia in elephants in Zimbabwe.



The new study reports several putative <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2646308/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virulence factors</a>, which are gene features tied to disease-causing ability, in some clades. The authors are careful about cause and effect because ancient DNA is incomplete and infections leave mixed traces.



Erysipelothrix is also known to sicken Arctic wildlife today, including muskoxen during unusual mortality events. That pattern has been documented in a Canadian Veterinary <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4431149/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal</a> that found Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae associated with widespread deaths in the Canadian Arctic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammoth-survival-and-microbes">Mammoth survival and microbes</h2>



Microbes that stayed with mammoths for hundreds of thousands of years hint at stable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-without-oxygen-how-ancient-microbes-powered-early-life/">relationships</a> shaped by diet, climate, and social behavior. The persistence of these lineages across far flung regions points to deep coevolution.



The last woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago, long after mainland populations vanished. Genetic work on that relict group links their late survival to small population size and accumulating harmful mutations.



"This work opens a new chapter in understanding the biology of extinct species. Not only can we study the genomes of mammoths themselves, but we can now begin to explore the microbial communities that lived inside them," said Love Dalén, professor of evolutionary genomics at the CPG. 



Ultimately, the data help connect health, ecology, and extinction risks in a single picture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-this-research-can-go-next">Where this research can go next</h2>



Reconstructing ancient microbiomes can help set baselines for living elephant microbiomes. That matters because health, diet, and stress are all reflected in the microbiome, the community of microbes that live in and on an organism.



Ancient pathogen signals can also clarify whether outbreaks played a role in population declines. Learning which bacteria carried disease associated genes in the past could inform surveillance and treatment strategies for modern elephants.



Finally, the same tools can be applied to other Ice Age species to test whether long-lived microbial partners were the rule rather than the exception. Careful sampling, clean labs, and independent checks will keep new claims on firm ground.

Million year-old mammoth microbes reveal new clues about disease

It may not be as dramatic as cracking, melting glaciers, but it could be more dangerous – Earth’s permafrost is thawing out.

Permafrost is sub-surface ground that has been frozen for at least two years. In the Arctic and Antarctic, most permafrost has been frozen for thousands of years, and it can be hundreds or even thousands of feet thick.

And if it is thawing out, that can mean bad news, because Earth’s permafrost is not just made up of frozen soil. It also holds the remains dead vegetation and animals that froze before they could decompose. It could hold almost twice the carbon that is currently in the atmosphere – carbon that could be released as methane and carbon dioxide as the ground warms.

Scientists with the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> and <a href="http://www.bgeos.at/">b.geos</a>, an Earth observation firm, have teamed up on a project called Glob Permafrost. They’re using satellites to monitor Earth’s permafrost.

“We can’t monitor permafrost as such from space,” b.geos founder Annett Bartsch said in a press release. “Although it’s a bit complicated, we can, however, use a lot of different types of satellite data along with in situ measurements and modelling to put together a picture of what is happening.”

The images and radar data captured via satellite show how the land surface sinks and rises as Earth’s permafrost warms. Thermal sensors offer information about surface temperatures. 

“And, we can use information on snow conditions and land cover as a proxy for soil properties. Both snow and soil regulate heat transfer, so they determine the actual impact of increasing air temperature on the frozen soil beneath,” Bartsch said.

The researchers have collected their findings, from data gathered between 2000 and 2016, to create a permafrost map. They’ve also shared their data in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0012825218305907">Earth-Science Reviews</a>.

As melting permafrost causes <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/melting-permafrost-is-causing-landslides-across-the-arctic/">landslides in the Arctic</a> and even the coldest areas are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cold-permafrost-threatened-warming/">threatened by warming</a>, the Glob Permafrost team’s research becomes vital. The project is currenting building a Permafrost Information System that will help other researchers monitor the changing situation.

If you want to improve your diet but you have your doubts about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthal-tooth-ancient-diet/">paleo trend</a>, a new option could be on the table: the peasant diet.

According to new research, medieval English peasants ate a lot of meat stews, leafy greens and cheese – and their diet was healthier than the modern one.

“The medieval peasant had a healthy diet and wasn't lacking in anything major!” Dr. Julie Dunne of the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> told the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">Daily Mail</a>. “It is certainly much healthier than the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/processed-food-weight-gain/">diet of processed foods</a> many of us eat today.”

Dunne and her team analyzed the residue in medieval cooking pots near Raunds to find out what people in the inland East Midlands region were eating in medieval times. By looking at the residues of fats, oils, waxes and lipids in the cooking equipment, archaeologists and chemists can piece together an idea of what people in a specific time and place ate regularly.

They discovered that the peasant diet was pretty well-rounded: they found evidence of stews made with beef and mutton, leafy vegetables including cabbage, spinach and leeks, bread and cereals such as oats and barley, butter, and green cheeses. 

Foods such as fish were a luxury item in the inland region, though peasants along the coast may have eaten more seafood.

The butter and cheeses were especially important to the peasant diet. Sometimes called the “white meat” of the poor, it would have provided protein, fat and important nutrients, the researchers told the Mail.

“There was also a bakehouse on the site [at Raunds] and we also found plant remains of oats and barley – these would have provided carbohydrate,” Dunne said. “The barley was probably used to make bread and oats may have been added to stews to make ‘pottages’ and ‘bulk’ them out.”

Historical documents, when they’ve mentioned the peasant diet at all, indicated that working families in medieval England ate meat, fish, vegetables, fruits and dairy products, but this is the first study to confirm that. Most historical records focus on the diet of wealthy members of society or royals.

All too often in history the detail, for example food and clothing, of the everyday life of ordinary people is unknown.

“Traditionally, we focus on the important historical figures as these are the people discussed in ancient documents,” Dunne said. “Much is known of the medieval dietary practices of the nobility and ecclesiastical institutions, but less about what foods the medieval peasantry consumed.”

Cracking the peasant diet offers important insight into how everyday people lived in the past, not just the elite.

The study has been published in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0305440319300342#!">Journal of Archaeological Science</a>.

Deep in the ocean below Bermuda, geoscientists have found the first direct evidence that material from deep within Earth's mantle can gradually seep up through the surface to form <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/volcanoes-earths-largest-mass-extinction/">volcanoes</a>. This material is located in a part of the mantle known as the transition zone, which is a layer rich in water, crystals, and melted rock.

Volcanoes are known to form when tectonic plates collide. However, the finding that material percolating 250 to 400 miles beneath the planet's crust can produce volcanoes is a new discovery. 

Study senior author Esteban Gazel is an associate professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at <a href="https://www.cornell.edu/">Cornell University</a>. 

“We found a new way to make volcanoes. This is the first time we found a clear indication from the transition zone deep in the Earth's mantle that volcanoes can form this way,” said Professor Gazel. “We were expecting our data to show the volcano was a mantle plume formation - an upwelling from the deeper mantle - just like it is in Hawaii.” 

The researchers used a 2,600-foot core sample that had been drilled in 1972 to examine isotopes, trace elements, and evidence of volatile material. The assessment provided the team with a volcanic history of Bermuda.

The study revealed that a disturbance in the transition zone 30 million years ago caused an upwelling of magma material that formed a now-dormant volcano under the Atlantic Ocean and then formed Bermuda.

“I first suspected that Bermuda's volcanic past was special as I sampled the core and noticed the diverse textures and mineralogy preserved in the different lava flows,” said study co-author Sarah Mazza of the University of Münster. “We quickly confirmed extreme enrichments in trace element compositions. It was exciting going over our first results ... the mysteries of Bermuda started to unfold.”

Even though isotopes of oceanic lavas have been analyzed for more than five decades, the extreme isotopes measured in the Bermuda lava core had not been seen before. It was these unusual isotopic compositions that allowed the scientists to identify the unique source of the lava.

“If we start to look more carefully, I believe we're going to find these geochemical signatures in more places,” said co-author Professor Michael Bizimis.

According to Professor Gazel, the research provides a new connection between the transition zone layer and volcanoes on the surface of Earth. 

“With this work we can demonstrate that the Earth's transition zone is an extreme chemical reservoir. We are now just now beginning to recognize its importance in terms of global geodynamics and even volcanism,” said Professor Gazel.

“Our next step is to examine more locations to determine the difference between geological processes that can result in intraplate volcanoes and determine the role of the mantle's transition zone in the evolution of our planet.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

A team of engineers at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California San Diego</a> has designed wearable technology that will provide personalized heating and cooling. A flexible patch adjusts the skin to a desirable temperature that can be maintained regardless of ambient temperature changes.

The device is powered by a stretchable battery pack and was designed to be easily integrated into clothing and comfortable to wear. According to the researchers, the patches would reduce the need for heating and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/air-conditioning-emissions-deaths/">air conditioning</a> and could lower energy usage. 

Study lead author Renkun Chen is a professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.

“This type of device can improve your personal thermal comfort whether you are commuting on a hot day or feeling too cold in your office,” said Professor Chen. “If wearing this device can make you feel comfortable within a wider temperature range, you won't need to turn down the thermostat as much in the summer or crank up the heat as much in the winter.”

Professor Chen noted, for example, that keeping a building's set temperature 12 degrees higher during the summer could cut cooling costs by about 70 percent.

The patch is made of thermoelectric alloys positioned between stretchy elastomer sheets. It physically cools or heats the skin to a specific temperature selected by the user. 

“You could place this on spots that tend to warm up or cool down faster than the rest of the body, such as the back, neck, feet or arms, in order to stay comfortable when it gets too hot or cold,” said study first author Sahngki Hong.

Using a mesh armband on a male volunteer, the researchers tested a prototype in a temperature-controlled environment. The patch cooled the tester's skin to a set temperature of 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit in just two minutes. The device also maintained this temperature as the ambient temperature shifted between 71.6 and 96.8 degrees.

“We've solved the fundamental problems, now we're tackling the big engineering issues - the electronics, hardware, and developing a mobile app to control the temperature,” said Professor Chen.

The ultimate goal is to combine multiple patches together to create smart clothing for personalized cooling and heating. The researchers are now working to construct a prototype cooling and heating vest, and they hope to get the technology on the market in a few years.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Wearable smart clothing patch can provide personal heating and cooling

Chewed up lumps of birch bark pitch from 10,000 years ago contain DNA from the first humans who settled in Scandinavia. The analysis of the ancient chewing gum, which was conducted at <a href="https://www.su.se/english/">Stockholm University</a>, has produced the oldest human <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dna-rna-earth/">DNA</a> sequenced from this area so far.

There are not many human bones available from Scandinavia that date back 10,000 years, and few of them have enough DNA preserved for archaeogenetics. The chewing gum has provided experts with DNA from two females and one male.

The pieces of gum were collected from Huseby-Klev, an early Mesolithic hunter-fisher site on the Swedish west coast. The site was excavated in the early 1990's, before human DNA analysis was possible. 

“When Per Persson and Mikael Maininen proposed to look for hunter-gatherer DNA in these chewing gums from Huseby Klev we were hesitant but really impressed that archaeologists took care during the excavations and preserved such fragile material,” said study co-author Natalija Kashuba.

“It took some work before the results overwhelmed us, as we understood that we stumbled into this almost 'forensic research,’ sequencing DNA from these mastic lumps, which were spat out at the site some 10,000 years ago!”

The study revealed that the three individuals shared close genetic affinity to other hunter-gatherers in Sweden and to early Mesolithic populations from Ice Age Europe. However, the tools recovered from the site had been made using lithic technology that was brought to Scandinavia from modern-day Russia. 

Earlier studies suggested that there was a cultural and genetic influx into Scandinavia from two routes, and the ancient chewing gum helps to confirm this theory. 

“Demography analysis suggests that the genetic composition of Huseby Klev individuals show more similarity to western hunter-gatherer populations than eastern hunter-gatherers,” said Emrah Kirdök, who conducted the computational analyses of the DNA. 

“DNA from these ancient chewing gums have an enormous potential not only for tracing the origin and movement of peoples long time ago, but also for providing insights in their social relations, diseases and food,” added study co-author Per Persson.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/commsbio/">Communications Biology</a>.

Ancient chewing gum offers new clues about the first humans in Scandinavia

Lizards, starfish, flatworms, and tadpoles are all equipped with the ability to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genetic-control-switch-regeneration/">regenerate a lost limb</a>. 

Regeneration in the animal kingdom has been documented as far back as the 4th century, but scientists are still unsure exactly what mechanisms are responsible for this remarkable ability. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> are one step closer to solving the regeneration puzzle after the discovery of a new type of skin cell specifically responsible for tail regrowth in tadpoles. 

Single cell genomics, a new advancement in gene sequencing that allows researchers to track gene expression at the level of individual cells, provided an up-close look at tadpole skin cells and how these cells jump to attention when it’s time to regenerate. 

The researchers analyzed cell types involved in regeneration in African clawed frog tadpoles and focused on a two-day period where regeneration is inhibited. 

“Tadpoles can regenerate their tails throughout their life; but there is a two-day period at a precise stage in development where they lose this ability,” said Dr. Tom Hiscock, a member of the research team that helped sequence the skin cells. “We exploited this natural phenomenon to compare the cell types present in tadpoles capable of regeneration and those no longer capable.”

Hiscock and his colleagues found that regeneration is jumpstarted by a subpopulation of epidermal cells called Regeneration-Organizing Cells (ROCs). The ROCs direct the entire process. 

“It’s an astonishing process to watch unfold. After tail amputation, ROCs migrate from the body to the wound and secrete a cocktail of growth factors that coordinate the response of tissue precursor cells,” said Can Aztekin, a co-researcher for the project. “These cells then work together to regenerate a tail of the right size, pattern and cell composition.”

Having a better understanding of the driving mechanisms that make regeneration possible in reptiles and amphibians could help open the door to new pathways for studying potential regeneration in mammals. 

The researchers published their findings in the journal Science.

Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, like cauliflower, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, and kale, contain a compound that inactivates a gene, called WWP1, that contributes to the growth of several common <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/nutrients-food-supplements-cancer-risk/">human cancers</a>. 

Now, a team of researchers led by <a href="https://www.bidmc.org/research/research-by-department/pathology/laboratories/pier-paolo-pandolfi-lab">Pier Paolo Pandolfi, MD, PhD</a>, Director of the Cancer Center and <a href="https://www.bidmc.org/research/research-centers/cancer-research-institute">Cancer Research Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center</a> have successfully targeted WWP1 with the broccoli compound, thus suppressing tumor growth in cancer-prone lab animals and human cells.

"We found a new important player that drives a pathway critical to the development of cancer, an enzyme that can be inhibited with a natural compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables," Pandolfi said. "This pathway emerges not only as a regulator for tumor growth control, but also as an Achilles' heel we can target with therapeutic options."

The team came to their conclusion, published in <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>, by first addressing a well-known tumor suppressive gene known as PTEN. PTEN, of which humans have two copies from both parents, is often mutated, deleted, down-regulated, or silenced in the presence of human cancers. However, both PTEN genes are rarely affected, but rather just diminished.

So, Pandolfi and his team located the molecules and compounds that regular PTEN with the intention of figuring out how to normalize PTEN levels in a cancerous setting to regenerate the gene’s suppressive traits. 

The team found that WWP1 produces the enzyme responsible for thwarting PTEN’s tumor suppressive activity. Upon further inspection of the enzyme, Pandolfi and his colleagues realized that the indole-3-carbinol (I3C) molecule, found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, could be the key to combating WWP1. 

And they were right. After administering I3C to cancer prone lab animals, the researchers watched the compound inactivate WWP1, thusly allowing PTEN to get back to its suppressive work.

Although there’s nothing wrong with upping your cruciferous vegetable intake in an effort to up your PTEN efficiency, first author Yu-Ru Lee, PhD, notes one would have to consume about six pounds of uncooked Brussel sprouts per day to reap any kind of anti-cancer benefit. The team hopes to further their research to use this new knowledge to develop WWP1-inhibiting treatments.

"Either genetic or pharmacological inactivation of WWP1 with either CRISPR technology or I3C could restore PTEN function and further unleash its tumor suppressive activity," Pandolfi said. "These findings pave the way toward a long-sought tumor suppressor reactivation approach to cancer treatment."

<a href="http://www.earth.com/news/whales-washed-ashore-san-francisco/">San Francisco</a> has become the first city in the United States to ban the municipal use of facial recognition technology. The ban is part of a collection of laws that will also require city agencies to disclose any surveillance that is being used now or in the future. 

The ban on facial recognition tech does not apply to personal or business use, and also does not apply to use by federal agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration at San Francisco International Airport.

Facial recognition has been met with strong opposition by many who believe it is an invasion of privacy and a threat to civil rights. Beyond the fact that the government would be able to track a person’s movements without cause, the technology is not entirely accurate and often incorrectly identifies women and people of color. This could worsen biases that are already an issue in law enforcement. 

Government agencies in San Francisco will now need approval from the board before purchasing surveillance technology. Facial-recognition bans will also be addressed by Berkeley, Oakland, and Somerville, Massachusetts, in the coming weeks.

Brian Hofer, the paralegal who drafted the ordinance, has become an expert on surveillance policy ever since he learned that agencies in Oakland were designing a surveillance center to monitor the public using artificial intelligence tools like facial recognition software. According to a report in the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/">New York Times</a>, his anti-surveillance campaigns have been “making waves” in the state of California. 

“My primary concern is when the state abuses its power, and because of the age we live in, it’s probably going to occur through technology and data mining,” Hofer told the New York Times. “That’s where I see the most potential harm occurring. So I just wanted to jump right in.”

New study reveals that Stone Age families crawled through caves for fun. A new study by researchers from Italy, Argentina, and South Africa has identified a previously unknown pastime shared among groups of humans in the late <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/stone-age-britons-mediterranean-invaders/">Stone Age</a>. The research suggests that families explored caves for fun, crawling on their hands and feet with wooden torches.

The cave of Bàsura at Toirano and its fossils have been studied since the 1950s. For the current study, which was supported by the Archaeological Heritage Office of Liguria, the team used multiple approaches to analyze the human traces. For the first time,  crawling behaviors were identified from around 14,000 years ago.

“In our study, we wanted to see how ancient humans explored this fascinating cave system,” said study first author Marco Romano of the <a href="https://www.wits.ac.za/">University of the Witwatersrand</a>. “Specifically, we set out to discover how many people entered the cave, whether they explored as individuals or as a group, their age, gender and what kind of route they took once inside the cave.”

To investigate, the researchers studied 180 tracks from within the cave, including foot and handprints that were preserved on the clay-rich floor. They used different types of 3D modelling, modern dating methods, and software to analyze the tracks.

“Together, these approaches allowed us to construct a narrative of how the humans entered and exited the cave, and their activities once they were inside,” explained Romano.

The team determined that five individuals, including two adults, an adolescent around 11 years old, and two children of three and six years old entered the cave barefoot and carried wooden torches to see in the dark.  

The first evidence of crawling was found in footprints from a low tunnel, which was a route taken to access the inner part of the cave. Anatomical details in the footprints suggest that the group had bare legs as they explored. 

Some of the handprints were “unintentional” and related only to exploring the cave, yet others appeared to be “intentional” and represented social or symbolic activities which took place within the inner chambers. “Hunter-gatherers may therefore have been driven by fun activities during exploration, as well as simply the need to find food,” said Romano.

“Together, our results show how a varied approach to studying our ancestors' tracks can provide detailed insights on their behaviour,” concluded study senior author Marco Avanzini. “We hope our approach will be useful for painting similar pictures of how humans behaved in other parts of the world and during different periods of time.”

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://elifesciences.org/">eLife</a>.

Left behind: Underrepresentation in research puts women, minorities at risk. Read enough published research and you’ll start to see familiar phrases about how “the study results are limited” or “no definite conclusions can be drawn,” and it turns out that these caveats are crucial. 

A study’s results are typically limited due to a finite sample size that is by no means fully representative of the entire population.  In other words, the number of people participating in the study does not accurately represent the diverse population of an area.

You’ve probably seen news headlines that read “6 out of every 10 men...” or “4 out of 5 children are at risk of...” or “60 percent of American couples fight over...” as the major takeaways from published research. 

But how many people participated in the study in the first place? If the researchers surveyed 10 children in total, 4 out of 5 is probably not an accurate conclusion. Left behind: Underrepresentation in research puts women, minorities at risk 

But beyond sample size, there’s another huge problem that plagues many studies: the underrepresentation of marginalized groups in scientific research. 

In everything from relationship studies to heart disease risk assessments to clinical trials, researchers time and time again have come short of fully representing a population. And when you’re dealing with sweeping associations, new treatments, prescription dosages, and underlying factors, underrepresented sample sizes matter.

Obvious examples can be drawn from psychological studies dealing with relationships. Whether consciously or not, these studies show an implicit bias favoring heterosexual couples and cisgendered individuals while excluding sexual minority couples. 

One <a href="http://www.hsj.gr/medicine/exclusion-of-sexual-minority-couples-from-research.php?aid=7377">2015 study</a> reviewed a decade worth of relationship research spanning from 2002 to 2012. But of all the articles analyzed, 88.7 excluded sexual minority couples.

“Although there has been a positive trend in the use of inclusive terminology (i.e., partner, significant other) our data suggests that the inclusion of LGB couples in relationship research has not improved in the last decade,” the researchers wrote. “Implications of these findings and potential reasons as to why same-sex couples may be excluded from research studies on romantic relationships are discussed.”

An earlier <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2875120/">2010 study</a> found that clinical trial research on erectile dysfunction and hypoactive sex disorders used “explicit exclusionary language.” 

“It is likely that most gay and lesbian patients are unaware that their sexual orientation is being used as a screening factor for participation in clinical trials,” the researchers of that study wrote. “Researchers should be held to careful scientific reasoning when they develop exclusion criteria that are based on sexual orientation.” 

There are countless reasons why exclusion and bias negatively impact the LGTBQIA+ community. For one, research can help inform policies, but if little unbiased research exists, policymakers can easily implement laws that further subjugate and harm marginalized groups. 

Take the debate that centered around the <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2017/03/07/health/transgender-bathroom-law-facts-myths/index.html">bathroom rights of transgender individuals</a>. A  widespread mass of misinformation, bias, and prejudice only further isolated a community of individuals looking for safer places and for society to more openly accept their identities. 

Besides policy that could help break down prejudice, excluding and underrepresenting marginalized groups in research can also adversely impact physical health and mental well-being. 

LGTBQIA+ individuals have a higher risk of developing a sexually transmitted disease, being a victim of sexual violence, physical, financial, and emotional abuse, and have a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/transgender-youth-risk-suicide/">higher risk of suicide</a> or developing an emotion or mood disorder due to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3657897/">social stigmas still very much in existence today</a>. 

If you want proof that underrepresentation can be dangerous, look no further than the dosage recommendations for the drug Ambien. 

In 2013, the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/home">Food and Drug Administration</a> (FDA) announced that the proper dosage of any drug containing the ingredient zolpidem for women <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/11/health/fda-requires-cuts-to-dosages-of-ambien-and-other-sleep-drugs.html">should be half</a> what was previously recommended. 

After years of complaints and around 700 reports of car accidents due to taking Ambien or a similar sleep aid the night before, the FDA conducted a series of lab and driving tests that showed that women metabolize zolpidem slower than men. 

Why did it take so long for the FDA to change the recommended dosage? There is a long history of women being underrepresented in scientific research and drug trials.

“This is not just about Ambien — that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” said Dr. Janine Clayton, director for the <a href="https://orwh.od.nih.gov/">Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health </a>told the <a href="https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/28/the-drug-dose-gender-gap/">New York Times</a>. “There are a lot of sex differences for a lot of drugs, some of which are well known and some that are not well recognized.”

Women metabolize drugs differently but only recently have researchers started to explore these differences and understand the negative and dangerous impacts from previously limited sample sizes that excluded women. 

It wasn’t until 1993 that the FDA lifted a ban excluding women of childbearing age from participating in new drug trials. 

In an article titled <a href="https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/28/the-drug-dose-gender-gap/">“The Drug-Dose Gender Gap,”</a> Rony Caryn Rabin reported that from 1997 to 2000, eight out of ten drugs that were removed from the market were done so because of the increased risks posed to women. 

“The path to a new drug starts with the basic science — you study an animal model of the disease, and that’s where you discover a drug target,” Kathryn Sandberg, director of the <a href="https://csd.georgetown.edu/">Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease</a> at Georgetown told Rabin.  “But 90 percent of researchers are still studying male animal models of the disease.”

Women have been routinely left out of clinical trials, but exclusion and underrepresentation of people of color in scientific research continues to be a rampant issue.

In 1993, Congress passed the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act in an effort to make sure drug trials would be more diverse and inclusive. 

However, <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/publish/news/newsroom/8305">one 2014 study </a>conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/">University of California Davis</a> found that less than five percent of cancer trial participants were not white and even fewer studies and trials focused on people of color. 

When drug trials exclude minorities, not only is it dangerous for prescription dosages, but it also prevents people of color from receiving potentially helpful treatments. 

While there are improvements being made in health studies and clinical drug trials, these small steps in the right direction are little consolation to the people who have been further stigmatized, injured, unknowingly put at risk, or barred from treatment through exclusion and underrepresentation in research.

A report from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> (ESA) is describing how scientists can better understand the past and predict the future state of the Earth by studying the atmosphere and climate history of our two neighboring planets, Venus and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/rivers-persisted-mars/">Mars</a>.

While all planets emerged from the same swirling cloud of gas and dust 4.6 billion years ago, they evolved to be vastly different. Venus has a thick, poisonous atmosphere, Mars has been stripped of most of its atmosphere, and the Earth has found a life-sustaining balance somewhere in between. 

Earth is also the only planet known to have liquid water on its surface. However, missions such as the ESA’s Venus Express and Mars Express revealed that water once existed on those planets as well. Due to catastrophic climate changes that caused Venus to become too hot and Mars to become too cold, the planets did not maintain their water for long. 

Often referred to as Earth’s evil twin, Venus has a dense atmosphere and a scorching surface temperature of 470 degrees Celsius. According to the ESA, the conditions on Venus provide “a natural laboratory to better understand a runaway greenhouse effect.”

“At some point, Venus began trapping too much heat. It was once thought to host oceans like Earth, but the added heat turned water into steam, and in turn, additional water vapor in the atmosphere trapped more and more heat until entire oceans completely evaporated. Venus Express even showed that water vapor is still escaping from Venus’ atmosphere and into space today.”

The Mars Express has been monitoring the planet for more than 15 years. The mission has produced abundant evidence that Mars once hosted flowing waters such as oceans and lakes, indicating that the planet may have once supported life. Mars also started out with a thicker atmosphere, but today the planet barely has any atmosphere left.

“It simply couldn’t hold on to its atmosphere most likely because of its smaller mass and lower gravity,” states the ESA report. “In addition, its initial higher temperature would have given more energy to gas molecules in the atmosphere, allowing them to escape more easily. And, having also lost its global magnetic field early in its history, the remaining atmosphere was subsequently exposed to the solar wind - a continuous flow of charged particles from the Sun - that, just as on Venus, continues to strip away the atmosphere even today.”

The ESA explains that Mars, like Earth, is known to be susceptible to changes in factors such as the tilt of its rotational axis as it orbits the Sun. Scientists believe that the planet is currently transitioning out of an ice age, and that the state of its water has varied over thousands to millions of years due to its tilt and distance from the Sun.

“Did we come close to becoming Mars-like in a previous ice age? How close are we to the runaway greenhouse effect that plagues Venus? Understanding the evolution of these planets and the role of their atmospheres is tremendously important for understanding climatic changes on our own planet as ultimately the same laws of physics govern all,” says the ESA. “The data returned from our orbiting spacecraft provide natural reminders that climate stability is not something to be taken for granted.”

Venus and Mars give scientists insight into the future of Earth

Years of satellite data help map ocean salinity levels. Years of satellite data have helped researchers create one of the longest and most accurate datasets of global ocean salinity.

Having an accurate record of sea-surface salinity will aid in future studies examining how human-made climate change is impacting the world’s water cycle and ocean currents as both of these are directly linked to water salinity.

The project, which will be presented at the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/esas-living-planet-symposium/">Living Planet Symposium,</a> is part of the <a href="https://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Space_for_our_climate/ESA_s_Climate_Change_Initiative/(print)">European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative</a> which seeks to incorporate satellite data into long-term datasets for 22 climate variables, salinity among them. 

Ocean buoys and ships have long been used to measure sea salinity and records as far back as the 1950s show a growing trend in increasing salinity in some parts of the ocean. However, inconsistent and limited datasets have made studying this trend a challenge. Years of satellite data help map ocean salinity levels

To help remedy this, ESA researchers turned to the skies and created a thorough dataset spanning nine years of Earth observation data collected from satellites. 

Data from <a href="https://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/SMOS">ESA’s SMOS</a> satellite mission, the <a href="https://smap.jpl.nasa.gov/">US’s SMAP mission</a>, and the <a href="https://aquarius.nasa.gov/">Aquarius satellite mission</a> were used to help compile the dataset. 

“By combining and comparing measurements from the missions’ various radiometers, the precision of sea-surface salinity maps is improved by roughly 30% thanks to the increased number of measurements and reduced inter-calibration error,” said Jacqueline Boutin, the leader of the research team. 

Ocean salinity plays a role in both ocean current circulation and seawater density, which is the amount of water that is denser than freshwater. Sea salinity is also linked to the global water cycle, and sea-surface saltiness impacts the amount of freshwater that evaporates from the ocean. 

Now, the dataset can help researchers understand the role of climate change in ocean salinity, how ocean salinity impacts El Nino, and ocean salinity’s impact on weather events like cyclones. 

The researchers plan to use the dataset in several water cycle studies in the Bay of Bengal where severe cycles are common.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.



The full study was recently published in <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2023GL104851" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geophysical Research Letters</a>.

A <a href="https://www.lut.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LUT University</a> study discovered that AI adoption has no direct effect on workers' well-being but does so indirectly through working conditions like task optimization and safety protocols. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;
