Rising temperatures are reshaping life in ways that go far beyond melting ice or shifting habitats. They are reaching into the most intimate biological process of all - how genes are shuffled and passed to the next generation.



New research shows that heat and cold can alter the genetic machinery that produces sperm and eggs in reptiles, even tilting the odds of embryos developing as one sex or the other. These subtle shifts strike at the foundation of fertility and evolutionary change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-tests-reptile-fertility">Temperature tests reptile fertility</h2>



A team from the <a href="https://www.uab.cat/en/ibb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona</a> (UAB) tested the effect in a small Madagascan lizard, the Guibé’s ground gecko. The experts tracked recombination - the exchange of DNA between paired chromosomes that fuels genetic diversity.



To measure this, the researchers analyzed 1,169 sperm cells from 12 male geckos kept at six different temperatures for a week. The results revealed a U-shaped response: recombination events rose at both cooler (68°F) and warmer (86°F) conditions compared to a mid-range 82°F.



"Our findings show the presence of hyper-CO spermatocytes in individuals exposed to both high and low temperatures," said Laura González Rodelas, lead author of the study. 



The study also noted shorter chromosome axes and more lingering double-strand breaks at the extremes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-recombination-matters">Why recombination matters</h2>



Crossover events are needed for chromosomes to separate cleanly during meiosis. Too few, or too many in the wrong places, can reduce fertility or alter which gene combinations survive.



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/three-new-gecko-species-discovered-after-eight-years-of-searching/">gecko</a> study found that long chromosomes soaked up most of the extra crossovers at hot and cold settings. 



It also detected weaker crossover interference, the spacing rule that normally keeps events apart along the synaptonemal complex.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-flips-reptile-chromosomes">Heat flips reptile chromosomes</h2>



Some reptiles go a step further, pairing sex chromosomes with heat and cold cues, which can cause temperature-induced sex reversal under hot incubation.



"This is the first report of reptile sex reversal in the wild," said geneticist Clare Holleley. Her fieldwork on the Australian central bearded dragon reported male to female sex reversal in the wild at high egg temperatures.&nbsp;



Understanding that switch needs high quality genomes that resolve both Z and W sex <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/y-chromosome-is-disappearing-may-already-be-causing-problems-for-men/">chromosomes</a>. One study delivered a near telomere to telomere assembly from a female ZW bearded dragon.



Researchers created a complete, high-quality map of the bearded dragon’s genome, covering both of its sex chromosomes. 



The team found that the genome contains about 1.75 billion DNA bases, and they were able to piece together the Z and W chromosomes in full, giving scientists a clearer view of how sex is determined in this species.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-reptile-sex-genes">Mapping reptile sex genes</h2>



Having a full <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genome-mapping-completed-for-dozens-of-common-animals/">genome map</a> lets researchers track genes linked to reproduction, growth, and disease. It also provides a baseline for comparing different reptiles and understanding how sex chromosomes evolve over time. 



These insights can help identify which genes respond to environmental stress and which ones remain stable. For conservation, this kind of data can guide breeding programs and population management. 



By knowing the genetic makeup of males and females, scientists can predict how changes in temperature might affect sex ratios in the wild, an issue that becomes more urgent as global warming accelerates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geckos-echo-plant-findings">Geckos echo plant findings</h2>



A plant genetics study showed the same U-shaped recombination response in Arabidopsis, from a low point near 64°F to higher rates at cooler and warmer settings. 



The pattern suggests organisms often keep recombination low in comfortable conditions, then shift upward under stress.



Mechanisms are still being worked out. A yeast paper connects temperature, DNA supercoiling, and weaker interference, offering one plausible route for how heat can ripple through meiotic structure.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetics-under-climate-strain">Genetics under climate strain</h2>



These changes land where evolution does its work. When environments move quickly, extra recombination can speed the shuffle of gene combinations that selection can test.



There is a tradeoff. If crossover placement and interference are distorted for long periods, fertility and chromosome stability could suffer in some lineages.



For reptiles that already face <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/top-marine-predators-may-suffer-massive-habitat-loss-by-2100/">habitat loss</a> and pollution, this genetic sensitivity adds a quiet risk. Protecting reptile nesting sites from extreme heat, shading exposed sand, and buffering water temperatures can safeguard early development.



Captive breeding programs can monitor incubation ranges that avoid persistent sex bias. They can also track genetic health when recombination patterns drift from physiological norms.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genes-maps-and-temperature">Genes, maps, and temperature</h2>



The gecko result is not a vague <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-behavior-productivity-being-directly-impacted-by-climate-change/">climate</a> story. It rests on direct cell counts, such as the increase in crossover markers at 68°F and 86°F relative to 82°F.



The bearded dragon work is not only about embryos. It gives a map of the Z and W regions, including candidate sex genes, which anchors future tests of how temperature interacts with sequence.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.1011772" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PLOS Genetics</a>.

Hundreds of millions of years before the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaur-extinction-event-darkness/">K-T or K-Pg extinction</a> wiped out the dinosaurs, another massive extinction event, the largest in the history of the world, took place. 

The End-Permian Extinction occurred around 250 million years ago, jump-started by a volcanic eruption in Siberia. 

Nearly 90 percent of all life on Earth was destroyed in the aftermath leaving just a little less than five percent of the sea’s species and little vegetation, according to <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/prehistoric-world/permian-extinction/">National Geographic.</a>

All life on Earth evolved from the few remaining species after the End-Permian which is also aptly called the Great Dying. 

While researchers know that a huge volcanic eruption was behind the extinction, a new study has provided insight into just how the eruption effectively wiped out most of life on Earth. Geologists call the eruption the Siberian Flood Basalts and it went on for nearly one million years. 

The new study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="http://ensg.univ-lorraine.fr/english/research/crpg/">Centre for Petrographic and Geochemical Research in Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy,</a> France and <a href="https://www.utk.edu/">University of Tennessee</a> professor Lawrence Taylor. 

The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Geoscience and help to explain what made the End-Permian Extinction so deadly. 

“The scale of this extinction was so incredible that scientists have often wondered what made the Siberian Flood Basalts so much more deadly than other similar eruptions,” said Michael Broadley, the lead author of the paper.

The researchers analyzed samples of mantle xenoliths provided by Taylor (who passed away in September). Mantle xenoliths are rock sections of the layers between the crust and mantle. During a volcanic explosion, the components of the lithosphere are brought to the surface. 

After examining the rock sections the researchers found that the lithosphere’s composition changed after the eruption. Before the Siberian Flood Basalts, the lithosphere below was packed with chlorine, bromine, and iodine. 

However, after the eruption, these elements were no longer present in the lithosphere. 

The researchers theorize that the elements, all part the of the halogen group, were expelled into the atmosphere during the eruption.

“We concluded that the large reservoir of halogens that was stored in the Siberian lithosphere was sent into the earth's atmosphere during the volcanic explosion, effectively destroying the ozone layer at the time and contributing to the mass extinction,” said Broadley. 

The study shows that the End-Permian extinction was so catastrophic because ozone eroding elements destroyed Earth’s protective defense against harmful UV radiation after the massive volcanic eruption.

The driving forces behind the largest extinction event ever

While most of us in developed countries often take <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cape-town-water-crisis/">clean water</a> for granted – not counting Flint, Michigan – there are still countries and communities around the world where access to clean water is a daily struggle. In dry, arid locations with no freshwater sources, how can people collect the water they need to survive? A new invention may just have a solution.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.uakron.edu/">University of Akron</a> have developed a nanofiber cloth that is able to capture clean drinking water from the air. This lightweight, battery-powered freshwater harvester can take as much as 10 gallons per hour from the air – even in arid locations. 

This nanofiber cloth uses electrospun polymers to “squeeze” water out of the air. The nanoscale fiber polymers have an extremely high surface-area-to-volume ratio, and are tangled around fragments of expanded graphite that give this large surface area on to which water droplets condense. The graphite encourages the water to drip out of this material when it is squeezed or heated. 

Sing-Chung Josh Wong of the University of Akron led the team that created this material. He claims that water harvesters made with these nanofibers could yield up to 180 liters of water per square meter every day. Furthermore, the fibers act as a filter for dirt and bacteria, which means the water collected is already safe to drink.

The water collector only needs to be about 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding environment for it to be effective. “We could confidently say that, with recent advances in lithium-ion batteries, we could eventually develop a smaller, backpack-sized device,” Wong says. 

He hopes to receive additional funding to build a prototype of this freshwater harvester, and believes that once the prototype is produced, it should be relatively inexpensive to manufacture. If this all turns out to be the case, it could mean improved access to freshwater for people around the world.

New nanofiber technology can capture drinking water from air

The <a href="https://www.fda.gov/">Food and Drug Administration</a> (FDA) will allow a clinical trial to test the effectiveness of the hallucinogenic compound found in magic mushrooms - psilocybin - as a treatment for depression. Previous research has suggested that psilocybin can ease the symptoms of chronic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magic-mushrooms-depression-emotions/">depression</a> in patients who have been resistant to other forms of treatment.

<a href="https://compasspathways.com/">COMPASS Pathways</a> has been given the approval by the FDA to proceed with an ongoing psilocybin therapy trial. The company was founded in 2016 with a goal of giving mental health patients faster access to evidence-based, innovative therapies. 

George Goldsmith is the chairman and co-founder of COMPASS Pathways.

“We are excited to be starting this landmark trial which has the potential to transform lives,” said Goldsmith. “Depression is the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide, and treatment-resistant depression affects more than 100 million people. It is a huge unmet need and the trial will teach us more about how this new approach might address it.”

The next phase of the study by COMPASS will be focused on 216 patients in 12 to 15 research sites across Europe and North America, beginning in the UK later this month.

Psilocybin therapy combines a dose of psilocybin with psychological support. In previous academic studies across the United States and the UK, psilocybin therapy has proven to be effective and safe. 

COMPASS co-founder Ekaterina Malievskaia is also the company's chief medical officer. She explained: “The design of this study has been a truly collaborative effort, with scientists, clinicians, patient representatives and regulators from Europe and North America working together with the goal of helping patients suffering with treatment-resistant depression.”

If the upcoming phase of the trial by COMPASS proves to be successful, the team will move into a third phase.

About 390,000 years ago, two early human species split apart from each other and formed the now-since extinct Neanderthals and Denisovans species.

Archaeological excavations and DNA analysis have provided insight into the lives of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-relations-ghost-species/">early Neanderthals</a>, and researchers have found evidence in ancient human genomes that <a href="http://humanorigins.si.edu/evidence/genetics/ancient-dna-and-neanderthals/interbreeding">Neanderthals interbred with modern humans</a> hundreds of thousands of years ago. 

Far less is known about another human relative, the Denisovan, but now new research shows that just like humans and Neanderthals, Denisovans paired with Neanderthals quite frequently. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.eva.mpg.de/">Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology</a> analyzed a bone fragment found in 2012 in the Denisova Cave in Russia. 

Because the fragment was identified as belonging to a hominin, it was taken to the Max Planck Institute to further examination. 

The researchers mapped the genome of the individual the bone fragment belonged to and found that it came from the ancient offspring of interbreeding Neanderthals and Denisovans. 

The findings were published in the journal Nature. 

“We knew from previous studies that Neandertals and Denisovans must have occasionally had children together,” said Viviane Slon, a lead author of the study. “But I never thought we would be so lucky as to find an actual offspring of the two groups.”

The discovery is a remarkable one because not only were the researchers able to estimate that the bone fragment came from the 13-year-old progeny of two different human species, but the newly mapped genome also provides crucial insight into the lives of Denisovans and later Neanderthals. 

“An interesting aspect of this genome is that it allows us to learn things about two populations - the Neandertals from the mother's side, and the Denisovans from the father's side,” said Fabrizio Mafessoni, a co-author of the study. 

The girl’s mother likely came from a group of Neanderthals who lived in western Europe and who migrated between western and eastern Eurasia before they went extinct.

With the Denisovan father, the researchers found evidence that he also had Neanderthal heritage farther back in his family tree. 

“So from this single genome, we are able to detect multiple instances of interactions between Neanderthals and Denisovans,” said Benjamin Vernot, the third co-author of the study.

The results of the analysis provide a better understanding of how early human relatives migrated and interacted with each other.  Interbreeding, as it turns out, was much more common than previously realized. 

“It is striking that we find this Neanderthal/Denisovan child among the handful of ancient individuals whose genomes have been sequenced,” said Svante Pääbo, the lead author of the study. “Neanderthals and Denisovans may not have had many opportunities to meet. But when they did, they must have mated frequently - much more so than we previously thought.”

Ancient teen had parents from two different human species

Scientists have found that a drug called galantamine, which is commonly used for treating Alzheimer's disease, is a highly effective way of inducing lucid dreams. In this type of dream state, an individual becomes aware that he or she is dreaming and can take control of what happens during the dream.

Many experts believe that lucid dreaming has mental, physical, and spiritual benefits, such as overcoming <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amygdala-experience-fear/">fears</a> and phobias.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a> and <a href="http://www.lucidity.com/">The Lucidity Institute</a> found that 42 percent of study participants who had taken galantamine experienced lucid dreams. The team, which was led by Dr. Stephen La Berge, says this is “one of the most effective methods for inducing lucid dreams available today.”

The neurotransmitter acetylcholine is believed to regulate the stage of sleep that is associated with dreaming, or REM sleep. Chemicals called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEls) help promote this compound by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase - an enzyme in the brain called that deactivates acetylcholine. 

Galantamine is an AChEI that is used to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The drug is fast-acting and has only a few mild side effects.

The study was focused on 121 individuals who had previously received some training on how to induce lucid dreams. The participants were given a placebo on the first night, followed by four milligrams of galantamine on the second night, and eight milligrams on the third night.


“On 3 consecutive nights, they awoke approximately 4.5 hours after lights out, recalled a dream, ingested the capsules and stayed out of bed for at least 30 minutes,” wrote the study authors.

As the individuals fell back asleep, they practiced the Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD) technique.

“To effectively practice MILD requires good dream recall,” wrote the researchers. “One begins by remembering a dream, either from a previous night or, ideally, from which one has just awakened. One then identifies an anomaly within the dream that is characteristic of one’s dreams.”


While taking the placebo, only 14 percent of the participants had a lucid dream. This number increased to 27 percent on the second night, and jumped up to 42 percent on the third and final night.

“Galantamine also significantly increased dream recall, sensory vividness and complexity. Dream recall, cognitive clarity, control, positive emotion, vividness and self-reflection were increased during lucid compared to non-lucid dreams.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS One</a>.

The Earth’s magnetic field is in a constant state of flux and every couple hundred thousand years or so, the poles undergo a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-poles-flip/">complete reversal and flip</a>. 

Throughout Earth’s history the poles have flipped many times and as <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012-poleReversal.html">NASA</a> points out, pole reversals are the “rule not the exception.” 

As a result, it’s not really a matter of if the poles will flip but when, and since we’re long overdue (roughly over 700,000 years) for a flip, many researchers are weighing on when the next flip may occur. 

A new study examining previous magnetic pole shifts through cave stalagmite samples found that a flip can occur within a matter of centuries.

More attention has been paid to the Earth's magnetic field because there is speculation that a flip may happen sometime in the near future. 

According to a piece in <a href="https://theconversation.com/does-an-anomaly-in-the-earths-magnetic-field-portend-a-coming-pole-reversal-47528">The Conversation,</a> the Earth’s magnetic poles are weakening and the strength of the magnetic field has been decreasing over the years. 

If a pole shift were to occur in our lifetime, researchers from the <a href="http://www.anu.edu.au/">Australian National University </a>recently discovered that, based on previous shifts, it could happen over the span of a century or more. 

The researchers collected and analyzed stalagmites from a cave in Southwestern China in order to map the paleomagnetic record form 107,000 to 91,000 years ago, according to <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6088607/Earths-magnetic-field-FLIP-sooner-previously-thought.html">the Daily Mail. </a>

Using both radiometric dating and magnetic analysis of a long stalagmite sample, the researchers discovered that the Earth’s magnetic field previously underwent a rapid reversal over a period of two centuries. 

The study provides important insight into the history of the Earth’s magnetic field and could help predict when the next flip will happen. 

If the poles were to flip in the immediate future, it could have devastating consequences. The Earth would be exposed to high concentrations of dangerous solar radiation and the Earth’s electric grid could go dark causing trillions of dollars in damage. 

That’s why it’s important to be as prepared as we can for an imminent flip. 

“Hopefully such an event is a long way in the future and we can develop future technologies to avoid huge damage, where possible, from such events,” Professor Roberts from the Australian National University’s Research School of Earth Sciences told the Daily Mail. “The record provides important insights into ancient magnetic field behavior,’ Professor Roberts said, ‘which has turned out to vary much more rapidly than previously thought.”

Earth’s magnetic poles could flip relatively quickly

When materials make contact with the natural air they are coated with a thin layer of molecules that change their properties. This molecular dirt has proven very challenging for scientists to study, and some have theorized that the coating is simply a layer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frozen-water-discovered-moon/">water</a> molecules.

To investigate, researchers at <a href="https://www.tuwien.ac.at/en/">TU Wien</a> have developed a new method by creating pure ice in a vacuum chamber and then melting it. This has enabled the scientists to produce the world's cleanest water drops, which they applied to titanium dioxide surfaces.


Using this technique, the researchers discovered that the molecular dirt that changes the properties of titanium dioxide surfaces is made up of two organic acids, acetic and formic acid, in a layer that is a single molecule thick. This was unexpected, due to the fact these acids are only found in minute amounts in the air.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) plays an important role in a wide range of technical applications, including self-cleaning surfaces. Experts around the world had previously observed an unknown molecule attaching to titanium dioxide surfaces when they came in contact with water.

The two acids that have been identified in the current study as coating TiO2 are simple organic acids produced by plants. The traces of these acids in the air are tiny, at just a few acid molecules per billion air molecules. While these molecules are not very common in the air, they stick to the metal oxide surface and change its behavior.

“In order to avoid impurities, experiments like these have to be carried out in a vacuum,” said study co-author Ulrike Diebold. “Therefore, we had to create a water drop that never came into contact with the air, then place the drop on a titanium dioxide surface that had been scrupulously cleaned down to the atomic scale.”

The research team found that the molecules appeared on the sample only when it made contact with the air. In addition, the same molecules were discovered in completely different parts of the world - in an urban region of Vienna and a rural region of the United States.


“This result shows us how careful we need to be when conducting experiments of this kind,” said Diebold. “Even tiny traces in the air, which could actually be considered insignificant, are sometimes decisive.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Even the cleanest water droplets contain molecular dirt

A billion years ago, the Sun was not nearly as bright as it is now, and scientists have speculated that atmospheric gases must have warmed the planet enough to sustain life. A new study led by the <a href="https://www.gatech.edu/">Georgia Institute of Technology</a> suggests that nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, may have made a large contribution.


While previous studies have established that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-dioxide-record-broken/">carbon dioxide</a> and methane were present on ancient Earth, they would not have been abundant enough on their own to warm the planet. This led scientists to theorize that the powerful greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) may have also existed.

For the current study, which was funded by the <a href="https://nai.nasa.gov/">NASA Astrobiology Institute</a>, the researchers used atmospheric computer modeling and experimentation to test out the N2O hypothesis. The investigation was focused on the middle of the Proterozoic Eon, over a billion years ago. 


“People in our field often refer to this middle chapter in Earth’s history roughly 1.8 to 0.8 billion years ago as the ‘boring billion’ because we classically think of it as a very stable period,” said study first author Chloe Stanton. “But there were many important processes affecting ocean and atmospheric chemistry during this time.”

“The ocean chemistry was completely different back then,” said study lead author Jennifer Glass. “Today’s oceans are well-oxygenated, so iron rapidly rusts and drops out of solution. Oxygen was low in Proterozoic oceans, so they were filled with ferrous iron, which is highly reactive.”


Lab experiments revealed that ferrous iron (Fe2+) in seawater reacts with nitrogen molecules to produce N2O in a process called chemodenitrification. The resulting N2O can then make its way into the atmosphere.


When higher levels of N2O were accounted for in the atmospheric model, the experts found that N2O levels could have been ten times what they are today with just ten percent of modern-day oxygen levels. This would have given the planet a boost of warming.

Prior to the Proterozoic, when oxygen was even lower, aquatic microbes could have been breathing N2O.

“It’s quite possible that life was breathing laughing gas long before it began breathing oxygen,” said Professor Glass. “Chemodenitrification might have supplied microbes with a steady source of it.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14724669">Geobiology</a>.

The largest monumental cemetery ever discovered in eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossils-humans-africa/">Africa</a> has now been uncovered by an international research team. The Lothagam North Pillar Site near Lake Turkana in modern-day Kenya was a communal site that was built around 5,000 years ago.

The remains of at least 580 men, women, and children suggest that they were engaged in an egalitarian society without a social hierarchy.

The development of such a massive public project by “mobile pastoralists” contradicts the idea that a complex social structure was required for the construction of large public monuments.

The research team, which included researchers from <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/">Stony Brook University</a> and the <a href="https://www.shh.mpg.de/en">Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History</a>, determined that the cemetery was used for several centuries between 5,000 and 4,300 years ago. 

A platform that was about 98 feet in diameter was built over a large, excavated hole where the bodies were buried. The cavity was filled and capped with stones, followed by megalith pillars. 

According to the researchers, all of the individuals that were buried - from infants to the elderly - were placed in the same area. The distribution of personal ornaments was also evenly distributed, suggesting that everyone in this particular society was considered to be equal.

“This discovery challenges earlier ideas about monumentality,” said study co-author Elizabeth Sawchuk. “Absent other evidence, Lothagam North provides an example of monumentality that is not demonstrably linked to the emergence of hierarchy, forcing us to consider other narratives of social change.”

Ancient monuments have long been considered to be indicators of complex societies with distinct social classes. In this case, however, the cemetery shows no evidence of a rigid social hierarchy. 

“The monuments may have served as a place for people to congregate, renew social ties, and reinforce community identity,” said study co-author Anneke Janzen. “Information exchange and interaction through shared ritual may have helped mobile herders navigate a rapidly changing physical landscape.” 

“The Lothagam North Pillar Site is the earliest known monumental site in eastern Africa, built by the region's first herders,” said study leader Elisabeth Hildebrand. “This finding makes us reconsider how we define social complexity, and the kinds of motives that lead groups of people to create public architecture.”

The study is published in the <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

Ancient graveyard reveals social structure from 5,000 years ago

In the year 2005, there were so many tropical storms that the <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/">U.S. National Hurricane Center</a> ran out of tropical cyclone names. Towards the end of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-slowing-down-hurricanes-making-them-stronger/">hurricane season</a>, they had to begin calling tropical storms by letters of the Greek alphabet. 

The year 2005 was the biggest year for tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic since the 1940s, and by some measurements, the biggest in over 150 years. Suffice to say, scientists have been intensely studying any factors that may have contributed to this phenomenon ever since.

Now, a new study published in <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a> uses climate simulations and analysis of tropical cyclone activity to estimate the maximum number of tropical cyclones that might occur in the Atlantic in our current climate. Their findings show that this maximum number possible under existing climate conditions is very close to the number of storms that occurred in 2005 (28). 

The study involved thousands of years of climate model simulations being analyzed to determine if they could result in climate conditions more favorable for tropical cyclone formation than what occurred in 2005. The models rarely exceeded the observed 2005 cyclone numbers, producing more than 28 storms just about one percent of the time.

“It’s hard for the Atlantic climate to generate a lot more tropical cyclones in this region than occurred in 2005,” says lead author Dr. Sally Lavender of the <a href="https://www.csiro.au/">Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization</a> (CSIRO). “Even when we looked at thousands of years of climate model simulations, they didn’t really indicate a convincing possibility of many more tropical storms.”

The study’s authors look to refine their climate model simulations in order to increase the accuracy of the depicted relationships between climate and tropical cyclone formation rates. And while it may seem like a complicated attempt to predict an unpredictable future, this type of research is important for risk management and determining the potential for damage to infrastructure and endangerment to the public. The researchers also plan on assessing the potential for damage caused by future storms, and how climate affects that as well.

2005 acts as a benchmark for maximum possible Atlantic hurricanes

The ability to accurately predict earthquakes is something that seismologists have been working on for decades. However, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-team-collaborates-to-improve-earthquake-prediction/">accurate earthquake predictions</a> are only half the battle when it comes providing ample ways to warn people and mitigate the damage that an earthquake can cause. 

Seismic hazard models are crucial for earthquake-prone areas like California as a way to predict not just the event of an earthquake, but also the potential damage it could cause to buildings, streets, and people.

With proper modeling, city planners can implement the right zoning requirements to make buildings safer and reduce road and bridge collapse. Seismic hazard models, just like earthquake models, depend on a wealth of data from previous seismic activity that researchers use to make accurate projections for the future. 

Now, researchers from <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/">Columbia University</a>, the <a href="https://www.usc.edu/">University of Southern California</a>, the<a href="https://www.ucr.edu/"> University of California at Riverside</a> and the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">US Geological Survey</a> have created a new model that does away with many of these previous assumptions.

The team created a new physics-based model that can be used to help verify and improve seismic modeling already in use by earthquake-prone states and cities. 

The results of the study were published in the journal Science Advances.

“Whether a big earthquake happens next week or 10 years from now, engineers need to build for the long run,” said Bruce Shaw, the lead author of the study. 

The researchers created a physics-based model called RSQSim using a supercomputer that was able to simulate 500,000 years of earthquake history in California.

For comparison, the state’s leading statistical seismic modeling program uses 100 hundred years of instrumental data and the new model was able to match its hazard estimates. 

“If you can get similar results with different techniques, that builds confidence you're doing something right,” said Tom Jordan, a co-author of the study. 

This means that physics-based modeling could soon be integral to forecasting future seismic hazards and verifying other model projections. 

RSQSim effectively eliminates many of the unknown variables and assumptions that other models are currently limited by. The new simulator could help improve building codes in Los Angeles and San Francisco that currently use regionally specific modeling data to inform safety and building policies. 

The researchers will also continue to hone RSQSim as a tool to help better understand earthquakes, seismic hazards, and global fault systems. 

“As we improve the physics in our simulations and computers become more powerful, we will better understand where and when the really destructive earthquakes are likely to strike,” said Kevin Milner, a fellow co-author of the study.

Improving seismic hazard modeling helps prepare for earthquakes

Turtles are rather unique creatures, with their reptilian characteristics and their protective shell. Yet another distinguishing feature of the turtle is its toothless beak – and a newly-discovered fossil from 228 million years ago shines light on how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/red-tide-kills-sea-life/">turtles</a> developed their signature traits. 

The results were included in a report published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

“This creature was over six feet long, it had a strange disc-like body and a long tail, and the anterior part of its jaws developed into this strange beak,” says Olivier Rieppel, a paleontologist at Chicago's <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/">Field Museum</a> and one of the report’s authors. “It probably lived in shallow water and dug in the mud for food.”

The paleontologists who discovered the fossil have named the new species Eorhynchochelys sinensis, which means “dawn beak turtle” – referring to it being the oldest turtle fossil to be found with a beak. Sinensis means “from China,” and is in reference to the place where the fossil was found by Li Chun, the lead author of the study and a researcher at China’s <a href="http://english.ivpp.cas.cn/">Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology</a>.

One of the more interesting aspects of this new species is that – while it’s body was wide and rib cage expansive – the species did not yet have a shell like the turtles we see today. But its discovery fits nicely into a missing piece in turtle lineage, as another early turtle species was discovered previously that had a partial shell, but no beak. “The origin of turtles has been an unsolved problem in paleontology for many decades,” says Rieppel. “Now with Eorhynchochelys, how turtles evolved has become a lot clearer.”

Mosaic evolution refers to the fact that traits can evolve independently of each other and at a different rate, and that not all ancestral species had the same combination of these traits. Eorhynchochelys developing a beak before other early turtles – while not having a shell – is evidence of mosaic evolution in this lineage. Some turtle relatives got partial shells, while others developed beaks, and over a long period of time, the genetic mutations that resulted in these traits occurred in the same animal.

Eorhynchochelys has even more to offer in the clarification of turtle ancestry. The skull of Eorhynchochelys helped solve the decades old debate as to whether turtle ancestors were part of the same reptile group as modern lizards and snakes – diapsids, which are known to have had two holes on the sides of their skulls early in their evolution – or if they were anapsids, which did not have these holes. The skull of the fossil Eorhynchochelys showed signs that it was a diapsid. “With Eorhynchochelys’s diapsid skull, we know that turtles are not related to the early anapsid reptiles, but are instead related to evolutionarily more advanced diapsid reptiles. This is cemented, the debate is over,” says Rieppel.

With all these observations, it’s clear that Eorhynchochelys was an important missing piece in the turtle family tree, and this discovery has changed the way that we think about the origin of the turtles we have today.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
