<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic</a> bags are everywhere, and too many slip into rivers and onto beaches. A new analysis finds that policies that either charge a small fee per bag or prohibit them outright cut the share of bags found during shoreline cleanups by 25 to 47 percent.



The study combed through hundreds of city, county, and state rules passed between 2017 and 2023. It matched those policies to more than 45,000 volunteer cleanups across the United States to see what actually changed on the ground.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-ran-the-study">Who ran the study</h2>



The research was coauthored by <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/faculty/kimberly-oremus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kimberly L. Oremus</a> of the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy (<a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UDEL</a>). 



Oremus and her collaborator set out to measure litter, not just shopping behavior, so the results speak to what ends up in nature.



The team relied on citizen science, meaning trained volunteers recorded what they collected during beach, river, and lake cleanups. 



They drew on <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TIDES</a>, a public database that stores those counts in one place so researchers can analyze patterns across time and place.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-plastic-bag-policies">Studying plastic bag policies</h2>



To isolate the effect of bag policies, the authors used a Difference-in-Differences (<a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/population-health-methods/difference-difference-estimation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DiD</a>) approach that compares places with and without new laws over the same period. 



That design helps rule out unrelated trends that affect everyone, such as national shifts in shopping or packaging.



The headline result is simple. In communities with full bans or fees, the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-linked-to-high-blood-pressure-and-heart-problems/">plastic</a> bags in the litter mix fell relative to similar places without policies, and the decline grew in the years after a law took effect.



State level rules tended to be more reliable in the data than city or county policies. Effects looked similar along coasts and rivers, with hints of larger gains along lakes where winds and currents spread litter differently.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-policy-fees-vs-bans">Plastic policy: Fees vs. bans</h2>



Fees change the default at every checkout and discourage taking a bag when you do not need one, which reduces both thin and thicker bag use.



Other <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carrier-bag-charge-summary-of-data-in-england/single-use-plastic-carrier-bags-charge-data-for-england-2024-to-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> points in the same direction outside the United States. England reports an almost 98 percent drop in single use carrier bags at major retailers since its charge began.



Policies that only restrict thin bags often allow thicker <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-soil-is-now-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-dumping-ground/">plastic</a> labeled as reusable. 



Those partial bans showed the smallest and least precise effects in the analysis, which is consistent with shoppers substituting one kind of plastic for another.



Some states also pass preemption <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/environment-and-natural-resources/state-plastic-bag-legislation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laws</a> that block cities and counties from regulating bags at all. When local governments cannot act, the study’s data suggest statewide policies become especially important.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-and-entanglement">Wildlife and entanglement</h2>



The cleanup records include notes on animals found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-99-percent-sea-turtles-organ-tissue-reproductive-system/">entangled in debris</a>. 



In areas with bag policies, the presence of entangled animals dropped by roughly 30 to 37 percent, although the authors caution that the estimates are imprecise and more data are needed.



That finding aligns with what we know about <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/stories/single-use-plastics-101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-use-plastics</a>. Thin bags linger in water and along shorelines, where they can snag, smother, or be eaten by turtles, birds, and fish.



Many studies track what happens at store checkouts, but fewer track what ends up outdoors. Shoreline cleanups offer a window into that last step in the chain from purchase to pollution.



Across the study period, the share of bags among collected items rose overall, but it rose less where bag laws existed. That pattern is exactly what you want to see if policies are slowing the flow of litter into the environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-policy-steps">Global plastic policy steps</h2>



A small, universal fee is a simple tool that nudges behavior without banning choices. Full bans can work too, and the analysis shows both approaches reduce the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glass-bottles-contain-more-microplastics-than-plastic-containers/">plastic</a> bags found during cleanups.



The mix of policies should match local conditions. In places with more bag litter to begin with, impacts were largest, so targeting high problem areas with fast action can deliver quick gains.



Plastic bag rules are only one part of the picture. Negotiators from 175 countries are working toward a plastics treaty under <a href="https://www.unep.org/inc-plastic-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a> that could standardize action on a wider set of products and chemicals.



The study notes that bottles, caps, and other items did not decline when bag policies passed. That is a signal that targeted rules for other single use products would be needed to curb overall litter.



Adopt a modest fee or a full ban that applies across retail and restaurant settings, and keep the text simple so it is easy to enforce. Pair the policy with clear signs at checkout and with retailer reporting that tracks compliance.



Measure results in the same way the researchers did. Recruit volunteers, log items in TIDES, and watch how the litter mix changes year over year so the policy can be adjusted as needed.



The study is published in <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adp9274" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science</a>.

Beginning in the 9th century, the American Southwest was hit with dozens of decade-long megadroughts that suddenly ended around the year 1600. Scientists are working to understand what caused these prolonged droughts to better predict when and where they may happen in the future.

A new study from <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/">Columbia University</a> has produced a comprehensive theory of how megadroughts emerged during the medieval period, and the research indicates that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-animals-adapt/">climate change</a> could trigger their return.

The theory proposes that megadroughts were driven by a combination of ocean conditions and high radiative forcing, which is when more solar heat is absorbed by the Earth compared to what is reflected back into space.

Previous studies were focused on individual factors that contributed to megadroughts. For the current investigation, scientists at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory analyzed how a network of global climate factors worked together to produce the extreme events.

The team reconstructed aquatic climate data and sea-surface temperatures from the last 2,000 years, pinpointing three key contributors to megadroughts. The experts determined that warm conditions in the Atlantic Ocean, cooler La Niña conditions in the surface waters of the tropical Pacific, and radiative forcing all converged to create the perfect conditions for persistent drought.

Most significantly, frequent La Niña events and elevated sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic were responsible for less precipitation across the southwest. The additional heat from intense radiative forcing made matters worse. 

Despite their success in identifying the causes of megadroughts, the researchers explained that these events will remain challenging to predict. This is primarily due to the difficulty of forecasting future El Niño and La Niña activity. 

Regardless, the persistent global warming associated with human activities will steadily increase the likelihood of megadroughts. 

"Because you increase the baseline aridity, in the future when you have a big La Niña, or several of them in a row, it could lead to megadroughts in the American West,"  explained study lead author Nathan Steiger.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Global warming may trigger megadroughts not seen since the 15th Century

Greenhouse gases have dominated climate change since about 1850. Members of the <a href="http://www.pastglobalchanges.org/">Past Global Changes</a> (PAGES) project have reconstructed the global record of average surface temperatures over the past 2,000 years. Based on this work, the experts were able to identify the primary drivers of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-animals-adapt/">climate change</a> for each of the last 200 decades. 

The research suggests that the Earth is currently warming at the highest rate ever observed as a result of greenhouse gases. The study also shows that brief periods of global cooling prior to the Industrial Revolution were mainly driven by airborne particles associated with volcanic activity.

The temperature reconstruction largely corroborates climate model simulations of the same time period. This indicates that climate models accurately represent the contributions of various influences on climate change and are reliable predictors of future warming.

PAGES co-chair Professor Michael Evans is a geologist at the <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a>.

"Our reconstructions look like the 'hockey stick' diagram of global temperature change that was first reconstructed more than two decades ago," said Professor Evans. "Thanks to the work of the PAGES community, we have much more data now. The results were consistent regardless of how we created the reconstructions or which randomly chosen subset of input data we used."

The PAGES researchers compiled the most detailed database of its kind for the temperature reconstruction, including nearly 700 records of climate indicators from across the globe such as old trees, reef-building corals, ice cores, and marine and lake sediments. 

Based on seven different statistical methods, the experts found that volcanic activity was responsible for climate variations up until  about 1850. After that, greenhouse gases became the dominant influence on the global climate. 

By removing these influences, the study authors pinpointed the magnitude of climate fluctuations that cannot be traced to a specific cause. Their estimates of these random changes strongly correspond with climate model calculations. 

"This makes us more confident that our reconstructions are realistic and, in turn, that the climate models are simulating past and future climate warming faithfully," said Professor Evans. He pointed out that the global temperature change over the next few decades will rely heavily on the choices that humans make, which is very difficult to predict.

"The uncertainty in the influence of human activities is not so large when looking forward only a few decades. But in the longer term, the choices we make for our energy sources and how much carbon these sources emit really matter."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ngeo/">Nature Geoscience</a>.

Memorial will be held to raise awareness of the death of a famous glacier. Iceland will host an official ceremony to commemorate the loss of its famous Okjökull Glacier, which is the first of many glacial casualties expected from <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/study-ocean-warming-is-the-primary-reason-for-glacier-melting/">global warming</a>. The "Ok glacier" has now ceased all movement and has transitioned into what experts refer to as dead ice.

Even though Iceland's largest glaciers are projected to expand in 2019 for the first time in 25 years, the shift is a few years too late for Ok, which lost its status as a glacier in 2014. By this time, the glacier had shrunk down to less than seven percent of its original 5.8 square miles.

Ok has now transformed into a mass of sediment and rocks known as moraine. The glacier will be memorialized on a plaque that is inscribed with "a letter to the future" composed by famous author Andri Snaer Magnason. Memorial will be held to raise awareness of the death of a famous glacier

“Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years, all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it," Magnason wrote in the tribute.

The glacier was the subject of the 2018 documentary “Not Ok,” produced by Cymene Howe and Dominic Boyer of <a href="https://www.rice.edu/">Rice University</a> in Houston. The film shares the story of Ok, as well as the likely fate of the rest of Iceland's glaciers.

"This will be the first monument to a glacier lost to climate change anywhere in the world,” said Howe. “By marking Ok’s passing, we hope to draw attention to what is being lost as Earth’s glaciers expire. These bodies of ice are the largest freshwater reserves on the planet and frozen within them are histories of the atmosphere. They are also often important cultural forms that are full of significance.”

On August 18, memorial attendees will be led on an "Un-glacier tour" by the Rice University anthropologists to the site of the former Okjökull glacier in Borgarfjörður, Iceland. The plaque, which will be permanently placed at the site, notes that the current amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 415 parts per million.

“One of our Icelandic colleagues put it very wisely when he said, ‘Memorials are not for the dead; they are for the living,'” said Howe. “With this memorial, we want to underscore that it is up to us, the living, to collectively respond to the rapid loss of glaciers and the ongoing impacts of climate change."

Temperatures control the timing of hibernation for monarch butterflies. Every year in the fall, millions of North American <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/monarch-butterflies-vast-distances/">monarch butterflies</a> travel thousands of miles to the same overwintering sites in central Mexico and along the coast of California. Once they reach their destination, the butterflies spend several months in a state of dormancy known as diapause, which helps them survive the winter months.

Scientists who study biological timing have been perplexed by how the end of diapause is signaled among the butterflies. A type of internal timer alerts the monarchs that it is time for spring migration weeks before the temperatures change or the days get longer.

Previous research focused on other organisms has shown that cold temperatures can influence the diapause-termination timer. Dr. André Green, a biologist at the <a href="https://umich.edu/">University of Michigan</a>, theorized that diapause timing among monarchs is also sensitive to cold temperatures. After investigating at monarch overwintering sites in central California, Dr. Green confirmed this theory.  

"These results are particularly interesting because they address a counterintuitive result: How does cold temperature, which normally slows down an organism's metabolism and development, speed up diapause? This work is one of the first to provide insights into this question," said Dr. Green.

According to the researchers, the findings have important implications for North America's monarchs, whose populations have declined steadily for decades at overwintering sites as a result of climate change.

"Understanding how diapause dynamics are affected by environmental and anthropogenic factors at their overwintering sites may be critical for understanding North American monarch population decline and guiding future conservation efforts, a point highlighted by the record low number of monarchs recorded in the western North American monarch population in 2018," wrote Dr. Green and his co-author Marcus Kronforst.

For the investigation, the team captured female monarch butterflies at overwintering sites after they entered diapause. The live insects were then transported to a lab where they were placed in an environmental chamber. 

The butterflies were exposed to light and temperatures that were designed to mimic the November conditions of central California, which is where they had been hibernating. In both December and January, additional female monarchs were moved to the lab from the same region. 

Next, Dr. Green compared the reproductive maturity of the different groups by counting the number of eggs in each female. An abundance of mature eggs is an indication that the female has terminated diapause, while a scarcity indicates that she is still in a dormant state. "The monarchs collected from the wild in December showed increased reproductive development compared to the monarchs that had been in the laboratory since November," said Dr. Green. "This indicated that an environmental condition in the wild - cold temperature - sped up the timer."

Dr. Green is currently working on a study of monarch migration at a site in U-M's Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/1365294x">Molecular Ecology</a>.

Balloons pose a serious threat to the environment. But what about sky lanterns?. First it was plastic straws. Now <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/balloons-environmental-impact/">balloons</a> are quickly gaining public ire due to their environmental impacts. Sky lanterns are a natural alternative to balloons, yet there has been little focus on their effect on the environment. 

Sky lanterns, also known as Chinese lanterns, are tiny paper hot air balloons. Similar to traditional latex balloons, the lanterns are often released into the sky during celebrations. 

Balloons can cause vast damage to an ecosystem once released. Not only do balloons contribute to our pollution crisis, but wild animals may mistake balloons for food and ingest the material. The balloon can then block the animal’s stomach resulting in a slow death by starvation. Turtles are especially susceptible to this as balloons floating in water look eerily similar to jellyfish. Wildlife also risk becoming entangled in the strings of the balloon. Balloons pose a serious threat to the environment. But what about sky lanterns?

Balloon releases were once an exciting public spectacle. Many other balloons are also accidentally released into the environment with the slip of a hand. Balloons pose a serious threat to the environment. But what about sky lanterns?

This balloon pollution quickly adds up. During a 2016 international beach clean-up event, enough balloons were <a href="https://oceanconservancy.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/International-Coastal-Cleanup_2017-Report.pdf">collected</a> to lift a 2,200 pound walrus off the ground.

At least five states have laws cracking down on balloon releases, according to<a href="https://balloonsblow.org/laws-concerning-balloons/"> Balloons Blow</a>, a non-profit that educates the public on the destructive effects of balloons.

While opposition to balloon releases grows, the effects of releasing sky lanterns is often left out of public discourse. Although sky lanterns have a smaller impact on pollution than balloons, the lanterns pose a unique threat due to their fire hazard.

Sky lanterns propel off the ground through a small fire that is ignited at the bottom of the lantern. The lanterns therefore could damage ecosystems, wildlife and human health if the flame touches the ground and starts a fire.

In 2011, a sky lantern caused a<a href="http://www.mofd.org/announcements/sky-lanterns-fire-danger-falling-from-the-sky"> wildfire</a> that burned 800 acres in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. 

While floating in the sky, sky lanterns pose a risk to airplanes. There were<a href="https://seneddresearch.blog/2013/10/16/sky-lanterns/"> 40 incidents</a> between airplanes and sky lanterns from 2001 to 2012 in the United Kingdom. During this time, only 8 incidents were reported between airplanes and balloons.

Farmers have also expressed concerns that the lanterns threaten their livestock through ingestion and entanglement but this phenomenon has yet to be assessed in depth.

Despite the lack of attention on the environmental impacts of sky lanterns, their release has been regulated throughout the world, including in Austria, Brazil, Costa Rica and Germany. In the United States, at least 17 states have banned them.

The sky lantern industry has worked to address environmental concerns by replacing metal wires with non-flammable strings and using rice paper and bamboo. These sky lanterns are often advertised online as “eco-friendly”.

Not all environmentalists are convinced. Balloons Blows<a href="https://balloonsblow.org/flaming-litter/"> warns</a> that even “eco-friendly” sky lanterns are an unsafe alternative as they still present a fire hazard.

Releasing a fire into the environment certainly comes with its risk, yet the full scale of this problem is still up in the air.

How thermal imaging could help us better prepare for climate change. The technology behind monitoring our own body temperature has advanced quite a lot over the last century. These days, a sensor placed against your skin can quickly read out your core temperature – whereas a few decades ago that might’ve involved a more… invasive method. And just as the technology to measure our body temperature has advanced, so has the technology behind measuring the temperature of our planet.

A new ultra-high-resolution thermal imaging technology has taken to the skies above Europe this summer, as scientists explore the potential of building a new satellite system that could record the temperature of Earth’s surface in intricate detail. The goal of this system would be to ultimately help increase the resilience of agriculture in a future that face increasing water scarcity and variability. However, scientists hope it will also help us gain more knowledge about the Earth’s climate system.

This new thermal imaging system is called HyTES and was built by <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a>. Results from its rest flights above urban and rural areas of the UK and Italy will help provide test data to support the development of the proposed Land Surface Temperature Monitoring (LSTM) mission. This would be one of six new missions being developed by the <a href="http://www.esa.int/ESA">European Space Agency</a> (ESA).

The proposed mission would include mapping both land-surface temperature and rates of evapotranspiration (water vapor emitted by plants as they grow) in incredible detail – delivering information at a resolution 400 times finer than what is currently captured from space-based thermal instruments. 

“In an urban context, this will help to understand and model thermal activity and ventilation in and around individual cities and inform planning and ‘climate-adaptive’ building design to deal with heatwaves such as those experience in western Europe during June,” explains Dr. Darren Ghent of the <a href="https://le.ac.uk/">University of Leicester</a> and member of the LSTM Mission Advisory Group. 

Data gathered from rural areas would potentially provide major benefits for <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/food-production-environmental-impact/">food production</a> and sustainable water use. 

“At the expected resolution it will be possible to monitor the temperature of individual fields, enabling growers to tailor irrigation regimes to specific crops and locations,” says Ghent.

With the Earth’s population expected to hit nine billion by 2050, the pressure on our planet’s water resources is mounting. “Agriculture already accounts for the use of 70% of global freshwater. Increased water withdrawals to keep up with future food demands combined with water scarcity and variability issues due to the effects of climate change will be challenging,” says Ghent. “The field-level temperature information from LSTM will increase the efficiency of individual farms in a changed environment.”

As the intricacies of our climate become even more important to understand with the effects of climate change, access to detailed climate data is at a premium. The efforts behind projects such as this could help increase our resilience to climate change as we gain a better understanding of the planet on which we live.

Research has shown that climate change will make <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/storm-flooding-triple-north-america/">weather extremes more common</a> in the future. 

120 years of data have now confirmed this theory, proving that climate change is directly linked to the increased severity and frequency of storms and floods in North Carolina.  

In a new study, researchers from the <a href="https://www.unc.edu/">University of North Carolina Chapel Hill</a> analyzed records of rainfall, and tropical cyclones kept since 1898 for North Carolina’s coastal storms. 

The data shows that major precipitation events have increased and that six out the seven highest rainfall events on record have occurred in the last 20 years. 

The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

“North Carolina has one of the highest impact zones of tropical cyclones in the world, and we have these carefully kept records that shows us that the last 20 years of precipitation events have been off the charts,” said Hans Paerl, the lead author of the study.

The trending pattern becomes even more evident when you factor in hurricanes Floyd, Mathew, and Florence, all of which occurred in the last 20 years and which brought about massive flooding. 

“The price we’re paying is that we’re having to cope with increasing levels of catastrophic flooding,” Paerl said. “Coastal watersheds are having to absorb more rain. Let’s go back to Hurricane Floyd in 1999, which flooded half of the coastal plain of North Carolina. Then, we had Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Just recently we had Hurricane Florence in 2018. These events are causing a huge amount of human suffering, economic, and ecological damage.”

Rainfall has increased since the 1990s, but precipitation from tropical cyclones has increased over the past 120 years. 

As significant rainfall events and storms become more frequent, it’s difficult for coastal communities to rebuild and prepare for future storms. The damage from hurricanes and tropical storms can devastate communities, displace residents, and take years to repair. 

Flooded homes and streets aren’t the only major cause for concern in the study. More rain means higher riverways, more soil erosion, and increases in nutrient runoff into watersheds. 

The study helps illustrate how precipitation events and their increased frequency are connected to climate change. 

However, as North Carolina’s population is growing along with the global population, emissions will follow suit and continue to rise, which will increase global temperatures. 

“We are in part responsible for what’s going on in the context of fossil fuel combustion emissions that are leading to global warming,” said Paerl. “The ocean is a huge reservoir that is absorbing heat and seeing more evaporation. With more evaporation comes more rainfall.”

Destructive free radicals may actually play a helpful role in marine ecosystems. In the human body, reactive oxygen species are unstable molecules containing oxygen that react aggressively with other molecules in a cell. The accumulation of these destructive free radicals can cause serious and even fatal damage to cells.

Reactive oxygen species also exist in marine ecosystems, where they are thought to degrade the cells of organisms such as <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/hydrothermal-vents-phytoplankton-blooms/">phytoplankton</a>. However, researchers at <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">UC San Diego</a> have now discovered that these molecules may actually play a beneficial role in the ocean.

The study has revealed that a reactive oxygen species produced by the marine diatom Thalassiosira oceanica is helpful in protecting its cells from overproducing a compound that powers photosynthesis. 

The findings could have implications for marine organisms and their chemical environment. The type of reactive oxygen species examined for the study is known as superoxide, which is a charged oxygen atom. 

Scientists believe superoxide may be responsible for the fish fatalities associated with toxic algae blooms, which highlights the need for a better understanding of how and why it is produced in certain circumstances. 

The contrasting positive and negative effects of superoxide could be a critical factor in how marine ecosystems respond to climate change. According to study lead author Julia Diaz, it is possible that superoxide production could help to mitigate excessive stress on the ocean. 

A compound produced by T. oceanica called NADPH is the power source that allows the diatoms to convert carbon into carbohydrates. In the presence of very bright light, however, T. oceanica can produce too much NADPH.

The team analyzed superoxide production in diatoms at various light levels and concluded that it protects cells at times when too much NADPH is produced. The reactive oxygen species acts like a surge protector that keeps energy flowing at safe levels. 

"Our findings point to a new role for reactive oxygen species in the photosynthetic health of this diatom. The next challenge is to determine whether this process also exists in other phytoplankton species," said Diaz.

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

But in a new study, researchers from <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/">Imperial College London</a> and <a href="https://www.cmu.edu/">Carnegie Mellon University</a> have discovered that mortality and life expectancy are affected by exposure to fine particulate matter called PM2.5. 

PM2.5 can be emitted from cars and power plants and are so small they can be easily breathed in. Accumulations of these particulates in the lungs can increase the risk of many heart and lung diseases. 

In this study, the researchers analyzed PM2.5 concentrations in the United States from 1999 to 2015. All counties in the US except Hawaii and Alaska were included in the study. 

Data from 750 air quality monitoring stations in the US, along with satellite images, were reviewed for the study. 

The highest PM2.5 levels during the years analyzed were recorded at 22 micrograms per cubic meter of air in Fresno County, California, in 1999. 

Even though PM2.5 concentrations have decreased since 1999, the researchers discovered that levels below current standards increase the risk of disease. 

Currently, the yearly standard for PM2.6 concentrations is 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air, and in 2015, the highest concentrations were 13.2 micrograms in Tulare County, California.

The researchers combined the PM2.5 data with mortality data from the<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/index.htm"> National Center for Health Statistics</a>. 

Between 1999 and 2015, there were 41.9 million deaths in the US, and 18.4 million were attributed to cardiovascular disease. 

A statistical model was used to predict the increased risk of death per one microgram per cubic meter of air of PM2.5 

The researchers estimate that PM2.5 levels between 2.8 and 13.2 micrograms in counties across the country can be linked to 15,612 deaths in females and 14,757 deaths in men from 1999 to 2015. 

What the model projections show is that PM2.5 levels, even at low concentrations, decrease life expectancy in the US and increase mortality rates. 

“We’ve known for some time that these particles can be deadly,” said Majid Ezzati, the lead author of the study. “This study suggests even at seemingly low concentrations - mostly below current limits - they still cause tens of thousands of deaths. Lowering the PM2.5 standard below the current level is likely to improve the health of the US nation, and reduce health inequality.”

The researchers published their findings in the journal PLOS Medicine.

Bill Wehrum, the former head of the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency’s</a> air policy division, resigned last month due to potential federal ethics violations. 

Now, Wehrum is facing his third inquiry into ethics violations given his prior experience as a lobbyist and lawyer for oil, gas, and coal companies and some of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gasses. 

The resignation is just another shakeup in the EPA after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-climate-change-not-priority/">Andrew Wheeler</a>, a former coal lobbyist, was chosen to head the agency following the departure of Scott Pruitt. 

Wehrum served as a top EPA official from November 2017 till June of 2019. 

There have been several instances where Wehrum allegedly violated President Trump’s ethics pledge. Under that pledge, new political appointees are supposed to limit their interactions with former employers and clients, according to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/epas-watchdog-is-scrutinizing-ethics-practices-of-agencys-former-air-policy-chief/2019/07/22/469c22be-a8a8-11e9-a3a6-ab670962db05_story.html?utm_term=.5db69b3378f6">Washington Post</a>. 

If a political appointee does meet with a former client, those meetings must be open to all other interested parties. 

Wehrum reportedly met with two former clients in 2017 but didn’t consult with ethics officials. In another instance, Wehrum is said to have helped his former firm with a decision involving the company DTE Energy. 

Wehrum’s former law firm is also under investigation by the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate environment panel.

“This is yet another example where the Trump administration has done just the opposite of ‘draining the swamp,’ by empowering polluting industries and installing those industries’ lobbyists and lawyers at the highest levels of our federal government,” Senator Thomas R. Carper, a Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, told the Washington Post. 

Of particular interest are four industry groups, the Utility Air Regulatory Group, Air Permitting Forum, NAAQS Implementation Coalition, and CCS Alliance, all of which are represented by Whreum’s former law firm and which have pushed for recent EPA regulatory rollbacks. 

Wehrum has stated that he had not represented the Utility Air Regulatory Group or any individual members who were part of it.

Former EPA official faces third inquiry into possible federal ethics violation

The right to peacefully protest is a cherished American liberty, but it’s also one that often runs afoul of law enforcement agencies. Conflicting interests of protecting the liberties of protestors and upholding order and civility aren’t always handled the same by the government or law enforcement. In fact, it sometimes feels like the government is playing favorites, allowing groups with certain agendas to go further than those with different agendas. 

Protestors like those at Standing Rock faced enormous pressure. Law enforcement used tear gas grenades, water cannons, tasers, pepper spray, bean bag rounds and more on Standing Rock protestors. More than 300 people were injured in conflicts with law enforcement during the protests. According to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/oct/31/dakota-access-pipeline-protest-investigation-human-rights-abuses">The Guardian</a>, the UN even investigated human rights abuses against the protestors.

Standing Rock was exceptionally violent, but the crackdown on protestors there isn’t an isolated case. As I <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/environmental-protesting/">previously reported</a> partially in response to Standing Rock but also to forestall future environmental protests, states are ramping up laws against protesters. In February 2018, the <a href="https://www.nlg.org/conservative-led-anti-protest-legislation-already-doubled-since-last-year/">National Lawyers Guild</a> said that conservative led anti-protest bills introduced had already doubled compared to the entire previous year.  The bills jumped from 25 proposed in 19 states to 58 bills in 31 states. Nine bills were introduced in the first two months of 2018 alone. Not only is this crack down on non-violent protests disturbing, it’s especially so compared to what recent right wing activists have been allowed in a few recent cases. 

The armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a perfect example. Not only was this a case of federal property being occupied by force, it was sparked as a protest of the loss of grazing rights by ranchers accused of arson and other crimes. One man was killed by law enforcement during the standoff but largely, those involved in the armed occupation got off easy. The leaders were acquitted of charges. The ranchers who were initially charged with five years for arson and inspired the armed takeover were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arsonist-ranchers-pardoned-and-given-more-land-access/">granted clemency</a> by President Trump. This stands in stark contrast with pipeline protestors that have been monitored by law enforcement as potential terrorists despite carrying out nothing more than unarmed protests. 

Recently, another example of anti-environmental activists being allowed to run amok was seen in Oregon. Earlier this month, <a href="https://www.hcn.org/issues/51.12/climate-change-rural-anxieties-derailed-oregons-climate-plans">High Country News</a> reported that Oregon was set to join California and others by joining the international emissions cap and trade market. The bill came shortly after Washington state passed its own package of climate bills. Reducing emissions seems like a standard these days but <a href="https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/6/5/18650155/climate-change-oregon-carbon-cap-trade-california">Vox</a> reports that Oregon’s bill was different. Several states and cities have already moved to reduce emissions from electricity production but Oregon was set to be the second state to mandate reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across all industry. The goal of “The Clean Energy Jobs Bill” HB 2020A was to reduce emissions 45% below 1990 levels by 2035 and 80% by 2050. 

The bill would have allowed Oregon, a much smaller state, to join California and parts of Canada in a carbon trading market. The idea was risky, as it would mean that Oregon was betting its fate partially on the California model and market forces beyond the small state’s control. If Oregon’s gamble panned out though, it would prove the viability of California’s model not just for a populous state with a large economy but also with a much smaller state like California. The bill could have set an example for other states wishing to reduce carbon emissions and even ushered in a new era of state environmental policy, but alas it was not to be.

The bill seemed likely to pass and become law, but Oregon Democrats didn’t see what was coming. Loggers, truckers and others in traditional blue collar jobs in Oregon protested the bill vigorously. Then, as <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/how-rogue-republicans-killed-oregons-climate-change-bill">The New Yorker</a> reports, eleven Oregon state senators left the state to go into hiding to avoid voting on the bill. This effectively denied the Senate the twenty people necessary to vote on the bill. When Democrats called on the state police to collect the rogue senators, right wing militia groups offered their services to protect the Republican senators “at any cost”. 

Protestors were largely cast as being representatives of the logging, farming and trucking communities, posing as David to the Goliath of ‘big government’. Despite the posturing, several logging companies supported the bill, according to <a href="https://www.wweek.com/news/2019/07/12/trump-invited-oregon-loggers-who-protested-carbon-cap-bill-to-white-house/">Willamette Week</a>. 

<a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/how-rogue-republicans-killed-oregons-climate-change-bill">The New Yorker</a> reports that the bill also had support from all nine of Oregon’s recognized Native American tribes, the state’s electrical utilities as well Nike and Uber. The bill was also supported by the oldest farm union in Oregon, due to the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture. Indeed, the bill had widespread support and was expected to pass until underhanded political tactics undermined it.  

What happened in Oregon amounts to undermining basic democratic process because of the walk out by state Republicans. Support by armed militia groups against a state police force emphasizes the undemocratic nature of the standoff. Some of those opposed to a climate change bill were willing to use violence and yet they weren’t arrested or detained by force. The protestors were also allowed their place. Actually, in stark contrast to protestors at Standing Rock or Black Lives Matter advocates, some of the Oregon protestors were invited to the White House.

<a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2019/07/activists-opposed-to-oregons-climate-policy-invited-to-white-house.html">OregonLive</a> reported that Timber Unity, an organization of loggers, that protested against the state climate bill had two members invited to the White House for a July 8 speech on “environmental leadership”. Marie Bowers, a farmer, and Todd Stoffel, a logger and trucker, both from Timber Unity were invited. Both are Trump supporters but seemed surprised by the invite. It is surprising but aligns with how the Trump administration that seems to be pushing a trend of cracking down on protestors they oppose on the one hand but offering support to the protestors who share their views.

Panama is the first Central American country to ban single-use plastic bags. Latin America is one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world, and now one Latin American nation has taken a big step in order to protect that biodiversity. 

Panama has become the first country in Central America to ban single-use plastic bags, joining over 60 other countries that have either totally or partially banned single-use <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/us-plastic-bag-restrictions/">plastic bags</a>.

This ban is an effort to reduce pollution on Panama’s beaches and protect the birds and marine wildlife that often get tangled in or ingest plastic bags. Signs can now be seen on the streets of Panama City that say, “less bags, more life,” and supermarkets, pharmacies, and other retailers will need to stop using traditional polyethylene bags immediately. Wholesale stores have until 2020 to conform to this new policy. Fines collected for non-compliance will be used to fund recycling and teaching programs.

According to the <a href="https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/our-work/activities/new-plastics-economy">New Plastics Economy report</a> published by Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2016, oceans are expected by 2050 to contain more plastics than fish by weight. The same report also predicts that the entire plastics industry will consume 20 percent of total oil production by 2050.

In the United States, a few individual states have banned single-use plastic bags – including New York, California, Hawaii, and Maine. But if we’re to mitigate the massive environmental impact that plastic is currently having on our planet, it will take more than just a few states and nations to pass these laws.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.



As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.

Scientists have made a startling discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn's moon Mimas</a>. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. By studying subtle irregularities in Mimas's orbit around Saturn, researchers detected the gravitational signature of liquid water hidden 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the moon's icy shell.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unlikely-ocean-world">An unlikely ocean world</h2>



At only 400 kilometers in diameter, Mimas seemed like the least likely candidate to harbor a subsurface ocean. Unlike other ocean moons such as Europa and Enceladus, which show clear surface signs of internal activity, Mimas displays no obvious hints of the liquid water beneath its ancient, crater-scarred exterior.



"Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-astrobiology">Implications for astrobiology</h2>



The ocean's recent formation makes Mimas a prime target for studying how oceans develop and potentially support life. This discovery adds another member to the exclusive club of ocean worlds in our solar system, each offering unique insights into the conditions necessary for habitability.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
