Americans hear the same advice again and again - eat better and move more. Yet obesity keeps climbing. Almost 40 percent of adults live with it today. Healthcare costs soar past $170 billion each year.



Related diseases, including certain cancers, are rising too. If the answer were only diet and exercise, the trend would have reversed by now.



Scientists at <a href="https://www.uclahealth.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA Health</a> argue that something else is driving the epidemic. They point to stress, inequality, and life circumstances that change how the gut and brain work. 



These forces don’t just influence choices. They shape cravings, motivation, and biology itself.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-obesity-tied-to-social-pressures">Obesity tied to social pressures</h2>



The new review, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, shows how social conditions affect obesity. Researchers call these conditions social determinants of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-childhood-obesity-rate-is-expected-to-soar-by-2050/">health</a>. 



These includes income, education, neighborhood safety, healthcare access, childhood adversity, discrimination, and isolation.



Think of them as the backdrop of daily life, where cheap food options dominate, streets feel unsafe, health care is hard to reach, and stress never fades. 



Each of these pressures pushes the body toward weight gain, shaping how people eat, how much they move, and how they cope.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-microbes-influence-brain-cravings">Gut microbes influence brain cravings</h2>



The body has a messenger system linking the gut to the brain. Microbes in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/obesity-is-linked-more-to-food-than-fitness/">gut</a> release signals. The brain responds with hormones and chemical shifts. Together, they steer appetite and cravings.



Dr. Arpana Church, who co-directs the Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center, describes this loop as central. 



“Our findings reveal that tackling obesity requires more than focusing on individual choices - it demands recognizing the powerful role that social and environmental forces play in shaping gut health, behavior and long-term health outcomes," said Dr. Church.



"Reversing the escalating obesity epidemic in America demands a dual approach - personalized, equitable care for individuals and bold, systemic policy reforms that address the root causes."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stress-fuels-obesity-patterns">Stress fuels obesity patterns</h2>



Financial stress shapes food choices. Families on tight budgets often buy processed meals because fresh produce costs more. 



Food insecurity makes obesity more common in both adults and children. Stress hormones then reinforce those eating patterns.



Neighborhoods also matter. Poorer areas often lack grocery stores, safe spaces, or healthcare. Violence and crime raise daily stress, pushing people toward food for comfort. Structural racism deepens the problem by concentrating disadvantage in certain communities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-loneliness-changes-brain-responses">Loneliness changes brain responses</h2>



Isolation adds another layer. People without strong social ties process <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fat-soaking-microbeads-could-be-the-next-weight-loss-breakthrough/">food</a> cues differently. The brain becomes more sensitive to rewards, and food looks more tempting. 



At the same time, the gut microbiome loses diversity. Inflammation rises and cravings grow stronger.



“Research shows that social determinants of health - such as access to nutritious food, safe spaces for physical activity, access to resources such as education, grocery stores, and quality health care - are powerful drivers of obesity risk, underscoring the need to address the conditions in which people live, work and grow,” said Dr. Church.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stress-rewires-the-brain-and-body">Stress rewires the brain and body</h2>



Stress, poor diet, and discrimination don’t just change behavior - they rewire systems. Brain scans show less gray matter in areas that control motivation and self-control.



Chronic inflammation lowers dopamine, reducing satisfaction from normal rewards. Harmful bacteria flourish in the gut, weakening metabolism and insulin response.



Racism-related stress leaves its mark too. Repeated exposure alters <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mind-over-matter-brain-boosting-diet-could-enhance-focus-in-children/">brain</a> networks that handle emotions and decision-making. 



It also shifts gut chemistry, promoting inflammation. These biological changes make food an easy, almost automatic coping tool.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-childhood-stress-sets-obesity-patterns">Childhood stress sets obesity patterns</h2>



The review shows that these effects start young. Stress during pregnancy changes fetal development. Children may inherit altered metabolic responses before they’re born. 



After birth, breastfeeding, antibiotics, and early diet shape the microbiome further. Breastfeeding can lower obesity risk in adolescents, especially in disadvantaged families. 



Still, ongoing stress and poor diet often outweigh those protections. By the time children reach school age, the patterns are set.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community-resources-reduce-risk">Community resources reduce risk</h2>



Dr. Church emphasized that policy shifts are vital. Health care must expand. Schools need <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/healthy-foods-can-be-staged-to-look-more-appealing/">healthier meals</a>, and neighborhoods need grocery stores and safe parks. But individuals can still act within limits.



Choosing affordable nutritious food, keeping social connections, and practicing stress relief can all help. Walking outside, journaling, and gratitude exercises are simple tools. 



"At the same time, healthcare providers have a vital role to play, not only by screening for current social determinants of health, but also by recognizing how these factors accumulate and evolve over time, which is rarely accounted for in today’s clinical practice," said Dr. Church.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mindfulness-and-therapy-show-promise">Mindfulness and therapy show promise</h2>



Clinics are trying new strategies. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tai-chi-reduces-inflammatory-risks-in-cancer-survivors/">Cognitive behavioral therapy</a> helps people change eating habits. Mindfulness reduces stress-driven overeating. 



Researchers are also testing probiotics and even fecal microbiota transplants to restore gut health.



“By understanding these influences and tailoring treatment plans to account for biological and psychosocial challenges, providers can offer more personalized plans that improve outcomes, empowers individuals to take control over their health,” noted Dr. Church.



The message is clear: obesity is not only about food or exercise. It reflects stress, inequality, and biology shaped by the world outside. Until those pressures shift, the numbers won’t change.

Flexible work hours may sound like an ideal arrangement, but the trend is posing a massive problem for workers in the UK. New research finds that flexible hours and zero hour contracts impose a serious strain on employees contracted in those positions. 

A zero hour contract means that the employer is under no obligation to provide any minimum number of hours, and the hours available may be presented on a short term basis.

Flexible working hours, however, involve contracts with minimal hours that are not always set and can change at the discretion of management, sometimes with very short notice. 

According to a new study from the universities of <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">Cambridge</a> and <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">Oxford</a>, flexible working hours affect 4.6 million people in the UK. These types of contracts are particularly popular among retail and care home workers.

While it might be assumed that zero hour contracts would be more detrimental, according to researchers they are just the “tip of the iceberg.”

Because flexible working hours means no stability, those employees who have rigid commitments like childcare were found to be most adversely affected, often resorting to toxic employer-employee relationships. 

"Manager-controlled flexible scheduling causes a huge amount of stress and anxiety for workers who are unable to plan their lives socially or financially as a result," said Dr. Brendan Burchell from Cambridge's Department of Sociology and co-author of the study, along with Dr. Alex Wood from Oxford.

Wood worked as a shelf stacker at a UK supermarket and used his experiences, combined with data collected from European Working Conditions Surveys, to conduct the study. 

The findings showed that these precarious scheduling practices can be very damaging to self-esteem and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-mental-health-issues/">mental health</a>, and can force employees into unstable situations where they have to beg for hours that have no guarantee. 

This research will hopefully help pave the way for finding ways target these unhealthy scheduling practices and help create more sustainable working environments for the employees most affected.

Flexible work hours found to be brutal for workers

Flexible work hours may sound like an ideal arrangement, but...

For some time, it has been understood that different behavioral traits between genders are linked to the brain and inherited genetics. But new research has revealed that gender behavioral traits can also be adapted from social environments and passed down through generations. 

The findings show a shift that differs from the currently accepted models that traits are inherited genetically. 

The study, performed by researchers at <a href="http://www.unimelb.edu.au/">University of Melbourne</a>, the <a href="http://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, and <a href="https://english.tau.ac.il/">Tel-Aviv University</a>, was published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences.

These adapted gender traits can be learned through culture or social context and then passed down through generations. So multi-generational behavioral traits might be explained more aptly through inherited socio-environmental conditions rather than genetic makeup. 

“Even in non-human mammals, adaptive traits that have reliably developed in offspring for thousands of years can disappear within a few generations, if the relevant environmental conditions change,” said John Dupré, a professor from the University of Exeter. 

Cultural norms are a huge part of how we adapt to our environment, and pre-existing, societal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eyes-important-feature/">gender</a> norms have been a pervasive part of our culture. The researchers discuss how this might contribute to how we are hardwired to adapt to and inherit socio-environmental conditions rather than through genetics alone. 

“Masculine and feminine behaviors cannot be explained by the existence of male and female brains, as has previously been suggested. Our research suggests that intergenerational inheritance of gender-specific traits may better be explained by highly stable features of the social environment,” said professor Daphna Joel from Tel-Aviv University.

With the Trump administration promising to increase deportation efforts, immigrant detention centers will house an increasing number of detainees. But disturbing new research reveals that the conditions in these immigration detention centers are similar to that of a prison and are anything but family-friendly.

According to a new study conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.ku.edu/">University of Kansas</a>, detained immigrants are treated like criminals even though immigration violations are a civil offense. Lawyers who had experienced the detention centers themselves were interviewed for the study.

Those interviewed said that the women who are held at the centers with their children must wear orange jumpsuits. The doors are monitored by guards, there are thick concrete walls, floodlights, and sometimes several families are all placed in one room.

“What immigrants go through in the immigration enforcement system amounts to forms of punishment that are only handed down in criminal cases,” said Cecilia Menjívar, a professor of sociology at the University of Kansas. 

The study also covers the strange contrast between the reality of the conditions in immigration detention centers and the language the government uses when discussing them. 

Even though the centers are tantamount to prisons and detainees and their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oxytocin-improves-autistic-children/">children</a> are treated like criminals, the language used to talk about the centers is much softer. 

“Officials refer for instance to the centers as family centers or they want the centers to be certified as child care centers. The language used is very neutral, even child- and family-friendly, as if it's just a holding place, but in fact, that's not the case at all,” said Menjívar.

Menjívar also explains in the study that these detention centers are just another way to incarcerate and remove people of color from society. 

“We have very high levels of the African Americans population placed in prisons, and we also have immigrants, mostly Latinos, who are put in detention centers that really function as prisons. So, both populations end up removed from society through imprisonment. The more immigrants are criminalized through law, the more they are going to end up in this type of incarceration,” said Menjívar 

The misleading government language does an injustice to the many immigrants who are put in those conditions and whose experiences are not part of the narrative.

Environmentalists trying to implement greener community farming practices sometimes face tension and obstacles due to differing opinions on how much conservation should be prioritized. 

First-time farmers and traditional family farmers may disagree on everything from the best sustainable practices to religious ideologies, and bridging the gap between these two types of farmers might seem like an impossible task.

But research led by Ruth Stamper, a doctoral candidate from the <a href="https://www.ku.edu/">University of Kansas</a>, shows promising tactics that could help mediate this divide, produce sustainable local agriculture, and foster stronger community engagement. 

Stamper talked to farmers in Missouri and Kansas about working to create sustainable local agriculture and found it be a powerful meditative tool within the farming community. 

The farmers she spoke to voiced a common goal of wanting to create or enhance sustainable local food systems and this helped bring together <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/severe-drought-plagues-north-dakota/">farmers</a> with differing views.

“They were coming together to build these local food networks, to educate and produce consumers for their products. They shared practices and how they were educating themselves, creating this space where they are building relationships that haven't necessarily developed before,” said Stamper. 

Religious differences were found to be one of the biggest dividers within local farming communities, as long time family farmers were surveyed as holding conservative Christian values and seemingly leery of neighboring farmers who presented themselves as progressive environmentalists or members of the LGBT community. 

"The local farmers all have the same kind of end goal in mind, even though they were coming from two different ideologies," said Stamper. 

Because local community efforts to produce sustainable agricultural practices are an important part of combating climate change, finding ways to bridge ideological disparities will be key in creating greener communities.

Local food systems bridge the political divide, help conservation

Climate skeptics are often considered either incapable or unwilling to grasp the reality of climate change. But now, an ongoing study is providing other explanations for why some people still deny climate change.

Jacob Lipsman is a <a href="https://www.ku.edu/">University of Kansas</a> doctoral student in Sociology. His research is exposing economic, social, and cultural influences that may cause communities and individuals to deny <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/report-reveals-climate-change-us/">climate change</a>.

"The most obvious example of this is the instance of an individual who works for an industry, such as in oil and gas production, that may be negatively impacted by regulatory policy," said Lipsman. "This also functions on the community level; for instance, in Southeast Louisiana, oil and gas represents a disproportionate source of revenue for coastal parishes."

Climate change has already had an undeniable impact on Louisiana. The state has lost over 1,800 square miles of land to coastal erosion, an area equivalent to the size of Delaware.

"This land loss has major impacts on communities both directly in terms of increased flood vulnerability and indirectly through potentially decreased economic productivity," said Lipsman.

Lipsman investigated Plaquemines and St. Bernard, two Louisiana parishes adjacent to the mouth of the Mississippi River. He surveyed residents to understand their views on environmental threats. Lipsman examined any links between these perspectives and local actions taken to address coastal restoration issues in the region.

So far, the study has revealed that residents of the parishes have exceptional environmental awareness despite widespread disbelief of climate change. For example, Louisiana's Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast is getting major local support in Southeast Louisiana. This $50 billion dollar plan will encompass hydrologic restoration and shoreline protection, among other projects.

Lipsman will present early findings of his research today at the annual meeting of the <a href="http://www.asanet.org/">American Sociological Association</a> in Montreal. He believes this study could help bridge the gap between climate change believers and non-believers. 

"If an individual or a community is resistant to the idea of climate change for economic or social reasons, climate advocates will not be able to effectively communicate with these individuals about climate change simply by presenting more data," explained Lipsman. "By better understanding the processes of climate change denial, climate advocates will be better equipped to have an effective dialogue with individuals and communities that are skeptical of these ideas."

Currently in the United States, medical marijuana is legal in 28 states and the District of Columbia. About 80 percent of individuals who use medical cannabis do so for pain management. Although medical marijuana use has been increasing across the nation, there is actually little comprehensive information surrounding the benefits and harms of using it for chronic pain treatment.

At this point, scientific evidence is too lacking for there to be any consensus on the safety and effectiveness of cannabis for chronic pain or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Recently two systematic evidence reviews from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) were published in <a href="http://annals.org/aim">Annals of Internal Medicine</a>.

Researchers reviewed 27 chronic pain trials to assess the benefits and harms of cannabis and cannabinoid products for treating chronic pain in adults. Ultimately, they found low-strength evidence that cannabis helps treat neuropathic pain, and no significant evidence to make any conclusions about medical marijuana’s effectiveness in treating other forms of pain.

The review also found that marijuana use in the general public may lead to increased risk for certain harms, including motor vehicle accidents, psychotic symptoms, and short-term cognitive impairment. 

In states with legal medical marijuana, roughly one-third of patients use cannabis for PTSD symptoms. Despite this, there has been little scientific evidence to support that cannabis assists in treating PTSD and doesn’t cause any harm.

In their review, researchers found insufficient evidence to form any conclusions on the efficacy of cannabis in the patient population studied. However, one of the largest observational studies of veterans with PTSD found minor but significant worsening of symptoms in patients who continued or started cannabis use when compared to patients who had never used or stopped using cannabis during the study.

In an accompanying editorial from <a href="https://www.vanderbilthealth.com/psychiatrichospital/">Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital</a>, the author states that these findings are very similar to the findings of other respected organizations, which suggests a growing consensus in the field. In the end, there is little high-quality evidence available to form any conclusions about the efficacy of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-treats-migraines-better/">cannabis</a> in treating pain and PTSD. 

Despite what has been found – or not found – in research, it is unlikely that states will revoke the legal status of medical cannabis. Instead, it should fall upon physicians to study the available research and be able to make educated decisions for their individual patients.

Cannabis treatment for chronic pain, PTSD still lacking evidence

Emissions from cars, factories, and cigarettes have been shown to cause many adverse health effects, including causing respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic issues. Residents of areas with high concentrations of pollution, like in urban China, are more susceptible to the impacts of air pollution than in other parts of the world and are working to find ways to lessen the effect.

A recent study looked at increased exposure to air pollution and its impact on health and found that air purifiers successfully reduced the negative effects caused by pollutants. 

A team of researchers from the <a href="http://www.fudan.edu.cn/en/">Fudan University in Shanghai</a>, China examined 55 college students and found that high levels of air pollution created and exacerbated cardiovascular and metabolic issues in otherwise healthy young people.

The researchers also wanted to study the impacts that air purifiers had on the test subjects and gave them alternative treatments of sham and real air purification systems in their dorm rooms. 

“Levels of stress hormones, systolic blood pressure, and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation were significantly lower when using real air purifiers,” Haidong Kan, lead author and Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Fudan said. 

The research, which was published in the American Heart Association's journal Circulation, tested blood serum and urine as the individuals were exposed to increasing levels of fine particulate matter found in vehicle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-co2-emissions-mean-protein-deficiency-millions/">emissions</a>. The results found increasing levels of stress hormones and notable changes in blood serum metabolites after exposure to the pollution. 

Because previous studies have suggested that fine particulate matter could adversely impact metabolic functions, this study used metabolomics, a method that determines how our body metabolizes glucose and amino acids. 

The study also found that real air purifiers were effective methods of reducing the negative impacts of the increased exposure to PM2.5. 

The study was fairly limited, but was the first to tackle the exact link between air pollution and cardiovascular health. Further studies will need to be completed using this research on a larger, global scale to help confirm just how air purifiers can help reduce the harmful effects of air pollution.

A report published today in the <a href="http://www.onlinejacc.org/">Journal of the American College of Cardiology</a> reveals that light to moderate drinking can lower the risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease and all causes. Heavy drinking, on the other hand, can significantly increase the risk of mortality from cancer and all causes. 

Despite the fact that high <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcohol-abuse-united-states/">alcohol</a> consumption has been linked to a large amount of health issues including cardiovascular disease, moderate alcohol consumption is widely recommended. For this study, the experts analyzed the link between alcohol consumption and risk of mortality from all causes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease in the United States. 

The researchers examined data obtained through the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhis/index.htm">National Health Interview Surveys</a> from 1997 to 2009. Over 333,000 participants were surveyed regarding their alcohol consumption levels and patterns. 

Alcohol consumption patterns were divided into categories including lifetime abstainers, lifetime infrequent drinkers, former drinkers, and current drinkers. The current drinkers were classified as light, moderate, or heavy drinkers. 

Light drinking is constituted by less than three drinks per week. Moderate drinking is

3-14 drinks per week for men and 3-7 drinks per week for women. Heavy drinking is over 14 drinks per week for men or over seven drinks per week for women.

Bo Xi, M.D., is an associate professor at the <a href="http://www.at0086.com/shdu/college.aspx?c=1026">Shandong University School of Public Health</a> and the lead author of the study.

"Our research shows that light-to-moderate drinking might have some protective effects against cardiovascular disease, while heavy drinking can lead to death. A delicate balance exists between the beneficial and detrimental effects of alcohol consumption, which should be stressed to consumers and patients," said Xi.

Over the course of the study, 34,754 participants died from all causes. 8,947 of these mortalities were cardiovascular disease-related and 8,427 mortalities were cancer-related.

The researchers found that heavy drinking in males increased the risk of mortality due to all causes by 25 percent and led to a 67 percent higher risk of death from cancer. These increases were not significantly noticed in women, and there was no association found between heavy drinking and cardiovascular disease mortality. 

Moderate drinking decreased the risk of all-cause mortality by up to 25 percent, and resulted in up to 34 percent less deaths from cardiovascular disease in both men and women. Light drinking had similar results. 

Study co-author Giovanni de Gaetano said that although younger adults should not expect considerable benefit from moderate drinking, "for most older persons, the overall benefits of light drinking, especially the reduced cardiovascular disease risk, clearly outweigh possible cancer risk."

Bottoms up! Moderate drinking has considerable health benefits

It seems intuitive at this point to say that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trick-heart-thinking-exercise/">exercise</a> is good for you. Vast volumes of research and personal testimonies generally show that exercise leads to benefits such as improved physical fitness (obviously), heart health, and even mental clarity. 

Now, recent research published in the journal <a href="http://www.eneuro.org/">eNeuro</a> finds that exercise improves memory later in life and increases the amount of neuron activity generated in adulthood. The study was performed on rats, but if this is also true for humans, it raises the possibility that exercise early in life may help protect against age-related cognitive decline later.

Researcher Martin Wojtowicz and his team provided a group of young rats with access to a running wheel, while others were in standard cages with no wheel. Beginning at one month of age, the results showed that six weeks of voluntary running was enough to induce a long-term effect on learning and memory of a fear response. This fear response is known to depend on newly generated neurons in the hippocampus in adulthood – exactly what the researchers were testing for.

Furthermore, the researchers found that the activity of adult-born neurons was increased compared to both neurons acquired during development and those of rats in cages with no running wheels. 

These findings support the idea of cognitive reserve, which postulates that the brain uses enriching experiences from youth to compensate for functional declines that occur as a result of age or disease. It’s possible that exercise in early life may help build up this cognitive reserve, helping to delay the crippling symptoms of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. If this is true for humans as well, putting added emphasis on exercise during youth may one day benefit us in our old age.

Exercise during youth helps memory in the long run

It seems intuitive at this point to say that exercise...

A recent study used smartphones to monitor the activity spaces of youths between the ages of 11 and 17. GPS data revealed that kids spend less time in their neighborhoods if they live in an area where residents are fearful of crime. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">Ohio State University</a> tracked over 1400 youths living in 184 neighborhoods in Franklin County, Ohio, as part of the <a href="https://sociology.osu.edu/browning-adolescent-health-and-development-context">Adolescent Health and Development in Context</a> study. Kids were given smartphones to carry with them for a week, and the devices reported their location every 30 seconds. 

The researchers found that the adolescents spent an average of one less hour per day in neighborhoods perceived as unsafe compared to kids from neighborhoods thought to be safe. In high-poverty neighborhoods, there was a higher fear of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-criminal-court-will-now-focus-environmental-crimes/">crime</a>. 

Christopher Browning is a professor of Sociology and the lead author of the study.

"It is clear that kids who live in high-poverty areas are spending less time in their neighborhoods and that is linked to a collective fear of crime," said Browning.
"This has never been tested before with GPS data that tracks movements on a minute-by-minute basis."

The study showed that the children spent around 52 percent of their waking hours at home, 13 percent in their neighborhoods, and 35 percent outside of their neighborhoods overall.

The caregivers of the adolescents were asked to rate how fearful they were to walk in their neighborhoods. The caregivers’ ratings showed no significant connection to how much time their kids spent close to home. However, the combined fear ratings of all the caregivers who spent time in a particular area strongly corresponded to the amount of time kids spent in that neighborhood.

"Once enough people stop spending time in a neighborhood because they are afraid, others will withdraw, whether they are afraid or not," explained Browning.

The study explored other reasons why youths in high-poverty neighborhoods spent less time there, such as a lack of schools or community centers. The collective fear of crime was found to be the most likely explanation. 

"Many cities have social services like recreation centers that are targeted for disadvantaged neighborhoods," said Browning. "But our results suggest these amenities may be underutilized because young people are withdrawing from the neighborhood. Whether they are afraid to go there or just following their friends elsewhere, young people spend less time in disadvantaged neighborhoods."

The research will be presented by Professor Browning today in Montreal at the annual meeting of the <a href="http://www.asanet.org/">American Sociological Association</a>.

Fear affects where kids spend their time

A new study of American workers surveyed over 3,000 adults who participated in the RAND American Life Panel, finding that the American workplace is both physically and emotionally taxing – much to the non-surprise of many American workers.

The survey was across a nationally representative, computer-based sample of people from all over the U.S., and was fielded in 2015 in an effort to collect information regarding working conditions and job characteristics in both white and blue-collar jobs.

Conducted by investigators at the <a href="https://www.rand.org/">RAND Corporation</a>, <a href="https://hms.harvard.edu/">Harvard Medical School</a>, and <a href="http://www.ucla.edu/">UCLA</a>, this was one of the most in-depth surveys ever done to analyze the conditions of the American workplace. In general, the study found that American workers are frequently experiencing unstable work schedules, hostile social environments, and unpleasant and even hazardous working conditions.

However, in spite of these negative aspects, many workers have a certain level of autonomy in their job and the majority feel confident in their skill set. Many report that they also receive social support at their places of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/men-work-family-conflicts/">work</a>.

White-collar works were the most likely to say that they feel they have little time to do their job, and one-in-four of all workers surveyed shared this sentiment. Furthermore, roughly one-half of those surveyed said that their work frequently interrupted their personal lives outside of work hours. Many workers report adjusting their personal lives to accommodate their work, but one-third say that they are unable to adjust their work schedules to attend to personal matters – this sentiment was shared particularly amongst women in the workplace.

“I was surprised how taxing the workplace appears to be, both for less-educated and for more-educated workers,” says Nicole Maestas, lead author and an associate professor at <a href="https://hms.harvard.edu/">Harvard Medical School</a> as well as an adjunct economist at <a href="https://www.rand.org/">RAND</a>. “Work is taxing at the office and it’s taxing when it spills out of the workplace into people’s family lives.”

Even though telecommuting has grown rapidly in recent years, 78 percent of workers still report that they are required to be present at their workplace during business hours – and one-third of workers complain that they have no control over their actual schedule. Just over half say that they don’t work the same number of hours on a day-to-day basis.

Despite all those time-consuming human resource training videos, over half of Americans say the experience unpleasant and potentially hazardous working conditions. A “disturbingly high” fraction of workers – almost one-in-five – report working in a hostile or threatening social environment. 

The report also looked at how preferences change among workers as they get older. Younger workers are less likely to value their ability to control how they go about their work and the pace of their work. Older workers are less likely to have a degree of mismatch between their desired and actual working conditions.

Study: American workplace physically and emotionally exhausting

A new study of American workers surveyed over 3,000 adults...

People with higher incomes get more exercise – on the weekends. Despite high-intensity exercise a couple days a week, however, they’re more likely to spend time in sedentary activities.

At least, those are the findings of a new study conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.cancer.org/">American Cancer Society</a>, <a href="http://www.gsu.edu/">Georgia State University</a> and <a href="https://www.uth.edu/">University of Texas Health Science Center</a>. 

The scientists used activity monitors to track how much physical activity study participants were getting on a daily basis. They reported a correlation between income and daily activity. 

"Our findings pertaining to income and the 'weekend warrior' effect underscore the importance of tailoring the physical activity message to reflect the constraints of both low and high income individuals," said Dr. Kerem Shuval of the American Cancer Society, who co-authored the study. 

Study participants earning lower incomes got less high-intensity physical activity, but also spent much less time in sedentary activities. 

Low-income individuals were less likely to work in office jobs or other sedentary fields, but they also had less access to gym facilities or park space, as well as less flexible schedules. Those earning higher incomes could exercise more easily, but were more likely to have office jobs and sedentary lifestyles.

But studies using the activity monitors have found that regardless of income, fewer than 5 percent of American adults get the recommended amount of physical activity each week. 

"To meet guidelines one can engage in 150 minutes of weekly moderate intensity activity over a 2 or 3-day period rather than 7 days, for example. This can be achieved over a long weekend, a message we may want to convey to those pressed for time,” Shuval said.

Following these exercise guidelines can help to reduce the risk of a number of preventable illnesses and health conditions, according to the researchers.

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>



Why does a 385-million-year-old forest matter today? It shows how dramatically forests can change Earth's climate. These ancient woodlands created the atmospheric conditions supporting complex life.

Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Economic impact</h2>



Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. Tourism suffered as lakes became fishless and forests declined. EPA economic analyses from the period documented repair costs mounting into billions annually.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The solution: government action and technology</h2>



Transformation from crisis to success required unprecedented cooperation between governments, industries, and environmental groups.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Clean Air Act of 1990</h2>



The turning point came with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, signed by President George H.W. Bush. This represented a fundamentally new approach to environmental regulation, as documented in EPA historical records.

Why did acid rain disappear from headlines? Simple: the problem was largely solved.

There's an old journalism saying: "If it bleeds, it leads." Environmental success stories don't generate urgency like crisis reporting. Media attention shifted to other challenges: climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss. There's only so much environmental anxiety the public can absorb, and newer concerns replaced acid rain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mission accomplished</h2>



The primary reason is beautifully simple: interventions worked. EPA monitoring data shows sulfur dioxide emissions dropped over 90% since 1990. Academic research published in environmental science journals confirms pH levels in formerly affected areas returned closer to normal. This represents one of history's most dramatic environmental recoveries. Studies by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation show fishless lakes now support healthy populations. Forests recovered, and building damage slowed dramatically.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-it-really-gone">Is it really gone?</h2>



The crisis is largely resolved, but monitoring data shows the problem isn't completely eliminated – it's managed to acceptable levels. Some areas still experience occasional events during high pollution periods. International environmental research indicates that rapidly industrializing Asian countries face similar problems to what we experienced decades ago, though they're implementing successful strategies.



EPA research shows nitrogen oxide emissions proved more challenging than sulfur dioxide, coming from vehicles and mobile sources. Climate science studies suggest changing weather patterns add complexity to how acid rain forms and falls.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What this teaches us</h2>



The acid rain experience proves that seemingly intractable environmental problems can be solved with scientific understanding, political will, and technological innovation. Environmental monitoring data shows recovery speed was remarkable – within a decade, measurable improvements appeared in air quality and ecosystem health.



Success came from bipartisan support across party lines. Policy analysis studies show the market-based approach appealed to those preferring economic incentives while achieving environmental goals. This support created lasting policy surviving political changes.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
