Far beneath our feet, beyond the Earth's rocky mantle and molten outer core, lies a dense, solid sphere of iron and other elements like carbon. 



This inner core is Earth’s deepest secret, shaping the magnetic field that shields our planet. Yet, scientists still puzzle over how it first formed and what ingredients allowed it to crystallize.



A new study by researchers from the University of Leeds, University of Oxford, and <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University College London</a> provides fresh insight. 



Their findings reveal that carbon may have been the key element that enabled the inner core to solidify billions of years ago.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-earth-s-core-composition-matters">Why Earth's core composition matters</h2>



The makeup of Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-inner-core-proven-to-be-rapidly-changing-and-now-rotating-backwards/">core</a> determines not only its density but also its thermal and magnetic behavior. 



Seismology shows that the core is less dense than pure iron, meaning lighter elements must be present. Candidates like silicon, sulphur, oxygen, and carbon have all been considered.



The latest simulations show that carbon, in particular, may have been essential. Without it, the inner core’s crystallization would have required impossible conditions, making its very existence a mystery.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-supercooling-paradox">The supercooling paradox</h2>



Liquids rarely freeze solid the instant they cool past their <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/melting-point" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">melting point</a>. Instead, they must be supercooled, chilled further before crystals can form. 



For molten iron alone, estimates suggested that a massive 800 to 1000 °C (1472 to 1832 °F) of supercooling would be needed.



If that had occurred, the consequences for our planet would have been dramatic. 



The inner core would have grown far too quickly, disrupting the delicate balance of heat flow inside <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-inner-core-is-not-solid-it-is-shape-shifting-time-for-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/">Earth</a> and destabilizing the magnetic field that protects life from harmful solar and cosmic radiation.



Scientists know this did not happen. Geophysical evidence points instead to a modest level of supercooling, limited to about 250 °C (482 °F). 



That small difference between theoretical predictions and observational reality has puzzled researchers for decades.



This contradiction, known as the inner core nucleation paradox, continues to inspire debate, experiments, and advanced simulations aimed at uncovering the true chemistry of Earth’s deepest layers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-simulating-the-impossible">Simulating the impossible</h2>



To resolve the paradox, the research team ran atomic-scale simulations of iron mixed with different light elements. 



They tested silicon, sulfur, oxygen, and carbon, and watched how each affected the first step of freezing: nucleation.



“Each of these elements exists in the overlying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-an-ocean-of-fire-shaped-early-earths-core-according-to-a-new-study/">mantle</a> and could therefore have been dissolved into the core during Earth’s history,” explained co-author Associate Professor Andrew Walker from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>.



“As a result, these could explain why we have a solid inner core with relatively little supercooling at this depth. The presence of one or more of these elements could also rationalize why the core is less dense than pure iron, a key observation from seismology.”

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-drives-earth-s-core-freezing">Carbon drives Earth's core freezing</h2>



The simulations revealed that silicon and sulfur actually hindered freezing, which would have increased the supercooling requirement. Carbon, however, had the opposite effect.



With 2.4 % carbon, the required supercooling dropped to about 420 °C (788 °F). Still too high, but much closer to reality. 



Extrapolating further, a carbon content of 3.8 % reduced the figure to 266 °C (511 °F), which is consistent with geological evidence.



This makes carbon the only element so far shown to both enable nucleation and align with seismic observations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-seeds-needed">No seeds needed</h2>



Unlike hail forming around dust in clouds, Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-how-gold-reaches-earths-surface-from-the-mantle/">core</a> appears to have frozen without “nucleation seeds.” 



Tests of possible seed materials, like oxides or metals, show they would melt or dissolve before reaching the center. That leaves chemistry itself, specifically the presence of carbon, as the driver of solidification.



“It is exciting to see how atomic scale processes control the fundamental structure and dynamics of our planet," said lead author Dr. Alfred Wilson from the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a>. 



"By studying how Earth’s inner core formed, we are not just learning about our planet’s past. We’re getting a rare glimpse into the chemistry of a region we can never hope to reach directly and learning about how it could change in the future.”

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-s-role-in-earth-s-core">Carbon's role in Earth’s core</h2>



The research also helps refine estimates of when the inner core formed. Some argue it began crystallizing over two billion years ago, while others suggest it happened less than half a billion years ago. 



By identifying carbon as the critical player, scientists can narrow down these timelines. 



This enables a better understanding of how Earth’s deep engine has evolved to influence the magnetic field, surface conditions, and even the long-term habitability of our planet.



The message is clear: carbon is more than a surface element of life. It may also be the hidden architect of Earth’s inner heart, shaping its stability across geological time.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-62841-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Communications</a>.

Scientists have changed their minds again about the composition of Earth's core

Houses may one day be built with “bio-bricks” made from urine which create a sustainable and environmentally friendly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carrot-extract-cement/">building material</a>, according to a new study. 

It may sound unusual or just plain gross, but urine has been called <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S221334371830188X#!">“liquid gold”</a> in previous studies because of its many potential uses. Now, researchers from the <a href="http://www.uct.ac.za/">University of Cape Town</a> are the first to use the byproduct to make bricks. 

A study detailing the bio-brick making process was published in the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering. 

The researchers were able to use synthetic urine to make calcium carbonate which cements with sand and can be molded, much like any traditional brick. 

Bio-bricks, which can be created at room temperatures, could provide a sustainable alternative for reducing emissions and energy consumption. 

To make calcium carbonate using urine, first, an enzyme called urease breaks down the urea in the urine. This process, called microbial carbonate precipitation produces the calcium carbonate, according to <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/bricks-grown-urine-could-be-used-build-houses-future-1196745">Newsweek. </a>

More testing and development is required to improve the strength and shape of the bricks, but the technology has a lot of promise. 

“At the moment, the bricks are still in the early stages of development. “We still need to optimize the process and we want to further increase the strength,” said Dyllon Randall, a researcher for the study. “We also need to develop an integrated process that makes urine collection easier.”

Randall also explained to Newsweek that the microbial carbonate precipitation process creates nitrogen and potassium which could be used for making fertilizers. 

“I think more people are realizing the importance of recycling and upcycling of various ‘waste’ streams,” said Randall. We need to stop thinking about things as waste but rather consider them as resources. This will help us achieve a truly sustainable future.

Bio-bricks made from urine could offer a sustainable building option

A new project called the <a href="https://www.earthbiogenome.org/">Earth BioGenome Project</a> (EBP) has been launched in an effort to find new ways of protecting <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/protecting-biodiversity-political-action/">biodiversity</a> while sustaining human societies. The goal of the project is to sequence the genomes of all the plants, animals, fungi, and protozoa on the planet over a period of ten years.

The experts behind the project wrote in <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">PNAS</a>:

“Powerful advances in genome sequencing technology, informatics, automation, and artificial intelligence have propelled humankind to the threshold of a new beginning in understanding, utilizing, and conserving biodiversity.”

“For the first time in history, it is possible to efficiently sequence the genomes of all known species and to use genomics to help discover the remaining 80–90% of species that are currently hidden from science.”

The scientists explained that the outcomes of the EBP will inform a broad range of issues, including the impact of climate change on biodiversity and the conservation of endangered species and ecosystems.

In collaboration with the Natural History Museum, the <a href="https://www.sanger.ac.uk/">Wellcome Sanger Institute</a> is leading the initiative. Dr Tim Littlewood is the head of the Life Sciences department at the museum. 

“Whether you are interested in food, disease, or speciation, the history of how every organism on the planet has diverged and adapted to its environment is recorded in its genetic makeup,” said Dr. Littlewood. “How you then harness that is dependent on your ability to understand it.” 


In PNAS, the researchers suggested that life on Earth still holds an incredible amount of untapped potential. 

For example, invertebrates such as sponges, mollusks, and cone snails have contributed to several drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating cancer, viral infections, and pain. Fungi are the basis for fermentation to produce wine, beer, and bread, while plants are the basis of major industries, such as food and rubber.

“Unimaginable biological secrets are held in the genomes of the millions of known and unknown organisms on our planet. This ‘dark matter’ of biology could hold the key to unlocking the potential for sustaining planetary ecosystems on which we depend and provide life support systems for a burgeoning world population,” wrote the scientists.

The data collected for the Earth BioGenome Project will be made freely available in public databases.

The initiative is detailed in the paper “Earth BioGenome Project: Sequencing life for the future of life,” which is published in PNAS.

Is gene editing the holy grail of scientific advancements or a Pandora’s box that, once opened, will create unforeseen consequences?

Gene editing has the potential to eradicate disease, could give corals and crops a fighting chance against drought, pests, and climate change, and could make <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prenatal-gene-editing-fatal-disease/">life-threatening genetic disorders</a> a thing of the past. 

Already, genetically modified mosquitoes are being considered as a strategy to eradicate malaria, genetically modified mice may soon wipe out Lyme disease, and scientists are working to create resilient corals using gene technology. 

The life-saving potential of gene editing technology can’t be argued, however, as we make leaps and bounds into the future, it is essential to consider the consequences of using gene editing over a large scale. 

An interdisciplinary group of researchers, after participating in a summit focused on the ethicality of gene editing technologies, published a paper discussing the potential ramifications if gene editing goes unchecked. 

The paper was published in the journal Science and argues that gene editing requires global governance and strict regulations. 

Any potential use of gene-editing needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis, using a through judicial review process that would weigh the pros and possible side-effects as well as examining how it would impact local communities. 

“The biggest risk right now with this technology is the uncertainty associated with it," said Natalie Kofler, the lead author of the paper. “In places like Burkina Faso, for instance, it is being touted as a silver bullet to get rid of malaria. But these technologies also have the potential to forever change the genetic makeup of species, or even drive certain species to extinction. Lack of global governance puts our planet at risk.” 

The researchers, representing over a dozen academic disciplines including philosophy and ecology, looked at CRISPR gene editing which can introduce a specific set of traits into a population. 

Introducing such widespread changes to a species may create unknown threats, mutations, or even drive some species to extinction. 

“There are many proposals to release gene-edited organisms into the wild and even actively drive them into the genomes of native wild populations to address a wide range of environmental issues,” said Oswald Schmitz, the director of the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies. “But this is all proceeding at a heady pace with very little discussion with potentially affected communities. Formal safeguards are needed to ensure that these well-intentioned technologies don't unintentionally spread globally to destroy ecosystems and human welfare and cultures that rely on them.” 

To guard against any potential catastrophe, a global body with the power to oversee gene editing proposals and make expert decisions needs to be formed according to the researchers. 

“Confronting this challenge goes beyond just the inclusion of empirical, scientific data, to also bring in value systems, ethics, and relationships with nature, relationships with technology, and historically marginalized voices to make a fully informed decision,” said Kofler. “Our proposal provides a blue-print on how to enact a new model of governance, one built on the integration of empirical and normative inputs, that includes diverse expertise and worldviews.”

Gene editing can save lives but will require strict regulation

In November of 1998, a developmental biologist at the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a> named James Thomson described the first successful derivation and culturing of human embryonic stem cells in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>. Now, a new paper is exploring how much stem cell science has grown in the time since it was first introduced 20 years ago. 

The paper's senior author, Tenneille Ludwig, is also the director of the stem cell bank at <a href="https://www.wicell.org/">WiCell</a>, a non-profit affiliate of UW-Madison that studies and distributes <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/stem-cells-heart-damage/">stem cells</a> for research. “What is surprising is how far we've come and how fast we've gotten there,” said Ludwig.

Stem cells have the capacity for replication under the right conditions, which has fueled the prospect of an unlimited supply of replacement cells for ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, spinal cord injury and a host of other conditions.

Professor Tim Kamp is the director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's <a href="https://stemcells.wisc.edu/">Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center</a>.

“When human embryonic stem cells were discovered 20 years ago, researchers and the public were quick to realize the tantalizing promise that these cells provided for therapeutic applications,” said Professor Kamp. 

“There was now a potential pathway to generate essentially any human cell type in the body in the laboratory and then use it to replace damaged or destroyed cells by disease such as beta cells in the pancreas in diabetes, dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease, and heart muscle cells after a heart attack.”


From its humble beginnings in just a few isolated labs, human stem cell science has exploded into a thriving global industry and has launched a new field of regenerative medicine.

The potential of clinical applications for stem cells has gained an increasing amount of attention over time. While trials have been proposed to treat everything from arthritis to Alzheimer's in the United States and abroad, no stem cell treatment has been approved yet by the FDA.

“If you're looking for a proven embryonic or induced stem cell therapy, there isn't one quite yet,” said Ludwig, noting that the timeline from the lab to the clinic is not very speedy or direct. “We know it takes a long time to go from a basic scientific discovery to the clinic.”

Regardless, the science of stem cells has advanced significantly. For example, scientists  are now able to direct the blank slate cells to become many of the cells found in the body, creating cells that could not otherwise be accessed, such as beating heart cells and dopaminergic neurons,.

“Now, after 20 years of ongoing research and development, we are seeing clinical trials emerging that are testing cellular products derived from embryonic stem cells for a variety of diseases including diabetes, ischemic heart disease, age-related macular degeneration, and more,” said Professor Kamp. 

“Most of these trials are just the beginning safety studies, but the remarkable new regenerative medicine applications of human embryonic stem cells and their more recent cousins induced pluripotent stem cells are beginning to realize the promise for revolutionary new therapies first identified 20 years ago.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell-stem-cell/home">Cell Stem Cell</a>.

Human stem cell science has come a long way in 20 years

Researchers have developed a computer model that is providing new insight into how people responded to <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/humans-driving-climate-change/">climate change</a> in the past. The experts are now able to identify the underlying causes of cultural shifts by examining how the changing conditions transformed people's ability to produce food in particular places.

Study lead author Jade d'Alpoim Guedes is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California San Diego</a>.

“There's been a large body of literature in archaeology on past climates, but earlier studies were mostly only able to draw correlations between changes in climate and civilization,” said Professor d'Alpoim Guedes. “What we're showing in this work is exactly how changes in temperature and precipitation, over space and time, would have actually impacted people - by affecting what they could and couldn't grow.”

By combining contemporary weather station data from across Asia with a climate reconstruction of the entire hemisphere, the researchers were able to create a simulation of how temperatures in Asia changed across space and time. The model also includes data on archaeological sites and the record of seeds found there.

When a major global cooling event happened around 3,700 to 3,000 years ago, not all regions of the globe were affected equally. Just as with climate change today, the impacts were most pronounced in the high latitude and high-altitude areas. 

For example, the team demonstrated how dramatic the changes were in Mongolia and the Tibetan Plateau. Around 3,500 years ago, broomcorn and foxtail millet would have failed to come to harvest about half of the time across this region. People had to abandon the crop and replace it with crops that were more resilient to the increasingly cold conditions, such as wheat and barley.

The researchers also concluded that cooling temperatures would have made it increasingly difficult to grow grain crops across Northern China between AD 291 and 360. According to the experts, this likely played a key role in the relocation of the Chinese capital from Xi'an to what is now Nanjing.

In other cases, the crop failures led to much more extreme migrations of people that were accompanied by conflict, including violent struggles.

The study also revealed that climate change instigated the development of transportation infrastructure across Asia, including Sui Dynasty's decision to invest in China's Grand Canal. The canal is the world's longest and oldest canal, linking the Yellow and Yangtze rivers, and serves as a major facilitator of trade.

“Crises are opportunities for culture change and innovation,” said study co-author and computational archaeologist Kyle Bocinsky. “But the speed and scale of our current climate change predicament are different.”

Professor d'Alpoim Guedes said that the impacts of warming are going to become quicker and greater. “With global warming these long-lasting patterns of adaptation will begin to change in ways that are unpredictable. And there might not be the behavioral flexibility for this, given current politics around the world.”

The study was published in the journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

While each of us may only appear to be one individual, living creature, that’s not entirely the case. Our bodies are full of viruses, fungi, bacteria, and other microscopic organisms that sit on our surface and live within our organs. Although it may gross you out when you think about it, we need these microbial communities – known as our <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/protect-gut-bacteria/">microbiome</a> – to digest food, support our immune system, synthesize vitamins, and even maintain our mental health.

It may seem like we’re living in harmony with these microbes, but new research reports that our relationship with our microbiome is more adversarial than once thought. A study from <a href="https://www.duke.edu/">Duke University</a> has found that we hosts starve our microbial benefactors of nutrients, basically enslaving the microbes within our gut so they can do what helps our body best. 

“There appears to be a natural pecking order to the bacteria and us,” says Lawrence A. David, Ph.D., an assistant professor of molecular genetics and microbiology at Duke University School of Medicine. “In a way it’s not surprising that we, the host, should hold more of the cards.”

Researchers have recently begun questioning the previous theory that microbes are so plentiful within our gut because it’s a desirable environment. Aspen Reese, a Ph. D candidate at Duke who is now a principal investigator at <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a> began asking the question; if almost every other ecosystem on the planet has competition over resources, why would the gut be any different?

Reese wanted to see if nitrogen was a limiting resource in the gut, as it often is for bacteria in streams and lakes. She began collecting stool samples from 30 different mammal species stretching from giraffes in Kenya to sheep in New Jersey. After grinding up the samples, she analyzed the amount of carbon and nitrogen atoms available to the microbes. 

Results showed that microbes in the human gut had access to an average of only one nitrogen atom for every ten carbon atoms, while the most-free-living microbes have a diet made up of one nitrogen to every four carbons. But when she fed mice a diet rich in proteins – which contain a lot of nitrogen – she found that the number of bacteria in their gut grew tenfold. And when Reese injected nitrogen into the bloodstream of mice, some of the nitrogen ended up in the gut bacteria. This suggests that the host can secrete nitrogen through cells lining its gut in order to save microbes from starvation.

“Our findings support the idea that we’ve evolved a way to keep our bacteria on a leash by leaving them starving for nitrogen,” David says. “It also explains why the Western diet might be bad for us. When people eat too much protein, it swamps the host’s ability to take up that nitrogen in the small intestine, and more of it ends up making its way to the large intestine, eliminating our ability to control our microbial communities.”

The over-prescription of antibiotics is also a concern when it comes to the fragility of our gut microbiomes. Studies have found that after antibiotic treatment, some individuals’ microbiomes have been altered for months or even years.

“Normally, pathogens are going to have a hard time colonizing the gut,” explains David. “There are trillions of other bacteria they have to beat out to survive. But if we suddenly take away the microbial competition for resources, we lose control, and the bad bacteria that cause nasty illnesses like C. difficile colitis have a clearer path.”

The researchers are now investigating how our diet can be manipulated to maintain a healthy relationship with our microbiome. After all, if you’re not happy on the inside, how can you be happy on the outside?

Scientists at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have made a breakthrough in understanding how the brain decides what to pay attention to. The experts made the discovery while studying barn owls, and they believe that the finding applies to all animals, including humans.

Study co-author and neuroscientist Shreesh Mysore is an assistant professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences.

“There are a million things out there in the world bombarding our eyes, our ears, our skin and other sensory organs. Of all of those things, what particular piece of information do we most need to pay attention to at any instant to drive our behavior?” said Professor Mysore. “Our work provides a really beautiful answer to how the brain solves a key component of that problem.”


For decades, studies focused on the forebrain of animals have produced no clear insight into how the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/brain-decide-information-retain/">brain</a> chooses what to focus on. In the current study, the researchers decided to examine the midbrain, an evolutionarily older part of the brain.

“All animals have a need to pay attention to the thing that might impact our survival, but we don't all have a highly developed forebrain,” said Professor Mysore.

The researchers chose to focus their investigation on owls because they have a midbrain that is organized in a way that makes it relatively easy to track the activity of specific neurons.

When the researchers showed 15 owls visual stimuli on a monitor while measuring the activity of individual neurons in their midbrains, they found something unexpected. Individual neurons usually encode visual space topographically, which means that neighboring neurons encode the spaces for neighboring parts of the world. But now, the experts observed single neurons responding to various locations that were sometimes very far apart.

Using a model developed by lead author Nagaraj Mahajan, a doctoral candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering, the team found that neurons needed to signal the most important location in the world no matter where visual input was coming from. The only way it was possible to encode space while keeping metabolic and wiring costs in check was to have fewer neurons than locations in the world, with each neuron encoding multiple locations. The brains of owls matched these computational predictions almost exactly.

“This gives us an answer for the first time about how the brain actually solves the problem of selection at all possible locations,” said Professor Mysore. “What we have now is a satisfying answer for a problem that is both fundamental and universal. There is promise that the insights from this study could generalize very well all the way up to humans.”

The team hopes that the findings will ultimately help experts to understand what's going wrong in disorders like attention-deficit disorder.

“Our thinking is that these midbrain neurons might be an important key to the puzzle of that inability to focus,” said Professor Mysore. “This is basic research but it's building ideas that can eventually be tested in patients and, if we're lucky, can help us come up with therapeutics.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell-reports/home">Cell Reports</a>.

A 99-million-year-old insect preserved inside of a piece of amber is giving scientists new clues about how Earth's landmasses were arranged millions of years ago. In 2016, Shuhei Yamamoto studied the creature trapped inside of a penny-sized piece of Burmese amber from Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar, and discovered that it was a new species.

Yamamoto is a researcher at the <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/">Field Museum</a> and the lead author of a paper describing the new species. He explained that the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/fossilized-baby-snake-amber/">fossil</a> beetle is a rare find because it is one of the oldest known members of its family. Based on the fact that it is an ancient relative of the flat rove beetles in the Piestus genus, the species was named Propiestus archaicus.

Living alongside the dinosaurs during the Late Cretaceous era, Propiestus had a flattened body, a long antenna, and short legs. It could be found beneath the bark of rotting trees - an environment similar to that of today's flat rove beetles.

“The antennae probably had a highly sensitive ability as a sensory organ,” said Yamamoto.

Smaller hair-like structures attached perpendicular to the antennae would have increased the beetle’s ability to feel out its surroundings. “There wouldn't have been a lot of space available in the beetle's habitat, so it was important to be able to detect everything.”

The flat rove beetle cousins of Propiestus that are alive today are found mostly in South America, with the exception of one species in Southern Arizona. Propiestus was found in Myanmar, which is literally on the other side of the globe from the Americas, but this has not always been the case.

Millions of years ago, Myanmar and South America were quite close to each other as part of the megacontinent Gondwanaland, which formed when the earlier megacontinent Pangea broke apart. Eventually, Gondwanaland broke apart as well, which is when the continents began to form as we  recognize them today.

Scientists have a clear understanding of which of today's continents made up Gondwanaland and which made up its sister continent, Laurasia. However, the detailed timing and pattern of the Gondwanaland split is not yet clear.

“Like koalas and kangaroos today, certain animals that we think lived in Gondwanaland are only found in one part of the world,” said Yamamoto. “Although Propiestus went extinct long ago, our finding probably shows some amazing connections between Southern Hemisphere and Myanmar. Our finding fits well with the hypothesis that, unlike today, Myanmar was once located in the Southern Hemisphere.”

Many inclusions in Burmese amber that have been researched in the last 15 years, including Propiestus, have traits in common with insects from Gondwanaland. By studying these tiny creatures trapped in amber, experts can begin to answer questions about the structure of the Earth millions of years ago.

“This fossil helps us understand life in the Mesozoic era,” said Yamamoto. “We need to think about everything from that time, both big and small.”

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/loi/tjsp20">Journal of Systematic Palaeontology</a>.

99 million-year-old beetle reveals how Earth’s landmasses shifted

We encounter so many stimuli in our day-to-day lives, it’s hard to imagine everything that our <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/brain-compensates-uncertainty/">brain</a> has to process along the way. When we actively want to remember something – like when we’re in the classroom or learning a new co-worker’s name – we’ll often make a conscious effort. But how does our brain know when to remember and retain other information that is important, but not something we’re actively trying to learn?

<a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> biologists report in <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a> that they may have figured out how animals are able to learn which sights, sounds, and sensations within their environment are most important to remember. Through studying mouse models, the researchers found that a part of the brain called the paraventricular thalamus (PVT) plays the role of gatekeeper within the brain, ensuring that it tracks and identifies the most important details of a given situation.

In their study, the research team taught mice to associate specific odors with good and bad outcomes. One odor would indicate that a sip of water was coming, while the other signaled that the mouse was about to receive a puff of air to the face. The researchers then replaced the air puff with a mild shock – a more negative outcome. 

The results showed that neurons in the PVT tracked this change. During the air-puff outcome, two-thirds of PVT neurons responded to both odors, while an additional 30 percent were activated only by the odor that signaled water. This means that the PVT had a more significant response to the good outcome. But during the electric-shock phase, almost all PVT neurons responded to the shock, while only about three-quarters of the neurons responded to both good and bad outcomes.

The same type of shift occurred during the water phase when mice were not thirsty. The less the water mattered to the mice, the less responsive the PVT was to water, and the more responsive it was to air puffs. Together, these results indicate that the PVT tracks what is most important in the moment to the individual.

This study could lead to new ways to modulate learning through stimulating or suppressing PVT activity. Researchers also believe that one day this research could help find alternative strategies for treating drug addiction, through helping addicts to unlearn the association between taking a drug and the high that it provides.

Researchers at <a href="https://www.dur.ac.uk/">Durham University</a> are reporting that dogs could be trained to sniff out malaria in people. While investigating ways to prevent the spread of the deadly disease, the experts found that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dogs-understand-words-mri/">dogs</a> could identify the scent of malaria in samples of socks worn by infected children.

The findings could ultimately lead to the first rapid, non-invasive test for malaria. 

"There is no test diagnostic that is 100% effective," Professor Steve Lindsay, study lead investigator, exclusively told <a href="http://earth.com">Earth.com</a>. "The best we have is Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays which can be used to identify very low densities of parasites, but this requires blood to be taken. It is too early to give costs for the dogs. But we see the dogs being used in malaria-free countries to help reduce the number of people carrying malaria parasites into the country. The cost of a malaria resurgence in a country that was once malaria free is huge."

Even though the research is in its early stages, the scientists hope that trained sniffer dogs can help pinpoint infected people faster so that they can be treated more quickly, which would also help to keep malaria from spreading to other countries.

“While our findings are at an early stage, in principle we have shown that dogs could be trained to detect malaria infected people by their odor with a credible degree of accuracy,” explained study lead investigator  Professor Steve Lindsay.

“This could provide a non-invasive way of screening for the disease at ports of entry in a similar way to how sniffer dogs are routinely used to detect fruit and vegetables or drugs at airports.”

“This could help prevent the spread of malaria to countries that have been declared malaria free and also ensure that people, many of whom might be unaware that they are infected with the malaria parasite, receive antimalarial drug treatment for the disease.”

For the study, the researchers used nylon socks to collect foot odor samples from seemingly healthy children between the ages of 5 and 14 in the Upper River Region of The Gambia in West Africa. The children were also tested for the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in their blood.

Using the sock samples, a Labrador-Golden Retriever and a Labrador at the Medical Detection Dogs (MDD) charity were trained to distinguish between the scent of children infected with malaria parasites and those who were uninfected. 


Overall, there were 30 sock samples from malaria-positive children and 145 samples from uninfected children. The dogs were able to correctly identify 70 percent of the malaria-infected samples, as well as 90 percent of the samples without malaria parasites.

Study co-author Dr. Claire Guest is the Chief Executive Officer of Medical Detection Dogs, located in Milton Keynes, UK.

“MDD have had positive results training dogs to detect diseases including cancer and diabetes sugar changes by odor. This is the first time we have trained dogs to detect a parasite infection and we are delighted by these early results,” said Dr. Claire.

“The possible potential to train dogs to detect tropical disease where diagnostics are poor, such as leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis is huge. I believe that this study indicates that dogs have an excellent ability to detect malaria and if presented within an individual infected with the parasite or a piece of recently worn clothing, their accuracy levels will be extremely high. This is a reliable, non-invasive test and is extremely exciting for the future.”

Study co-author Professor James Logan is the Head of the Department of Disease Control at the <a href="https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/">London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine</a>.

“Worryingly, our progress on the control of malaria has stalled in recent years, so we desperately need innovative new tools to help in the fight against malaria,” said Professor Logan. “Our results show that sniffer dogs could be a serious way of making diagnosis of people who don't show any symptoms, but are still infectious, quicker and easier.”

The research, which was funded by the <a href="https://www.gatesfoundation.org/">Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation</a>, was presented at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

All active volcanoes pose a risk to nearby people and communities, but some are more dangerous than others. In an updated volcano threat assessment, the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">U.S. Geological Survey</a> has listed 18 volcanoes as “very high threats.”

Eleven of the 18 riskiest volcanoes in the U.S. are in Washington, Oregon or California, and five are in Alaska, but it’s Hawaii’s erupting Kilauea that tops the volcano threat list.

“This report may come as a surprise to many, but not to volcanologists,” Dr. Janine Krippner of <a href="https://www.concord.edu/">Concord University</a> told the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">Daily Mail</a>. “The USA is one of the most active countries in the world when it comes to volcanic activity.”

The <a href="https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sir20185140">2018 report</a> also lists 39 high threat, 49 moderate threat, 34 low threat and 21 very low threat volcanoes in the U.S. – 161 active volcanoes in total.

Each volcano threat was assessed on 24 different different risk factors, including how active the volcano is, its historic eruptions, how close it is to large populations, and more. 

But a high-risk volcano won’t necessarily be the next one to erupt and cause damage.

“The threat ranking is not an indication of which volcano will erupt next,” the USGS report noted. “Rather, it indicates how severe the impacts might be from future eruptions at any given volcano.”

The top five “high threat” volcanoes on the report are Hawaii’s Kilauea, Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in Washington, Redoubt Volcano in Alaska, and Mount Shasta in California. The majority of the moderate threat volcanoes are in Alaska, the USGS reported. The report also raised the volcano threat level of Yellowstone in Wyoming.

The volcano threat assessment comes at a time when about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanic-hazards-millions-risk/">800 million people</a> around the world live within 60 miles of an active volcano. 

“Understanding how volcanic threat varies with distance from the volcano and which groups of people are affected most can contribute to risk reduction by providing empirical data on which to forecast impacts or support evidence-based eruption planning and preparedness,” researchers wrote in a <a href="https://appliedvolc.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s13617-017-0067-4">study published last October</a>.

Kilauea tops new USGS volcano threat assessment

Kicking alcohol addiction is hard. Part of the difficulty might be because alcohol hijacks a neural pathway that forms memories, triggering your brain to remember the good times and ignore the bad.

A single alcoholic drink can alter that pathway for a time, a new study suggests – which may be why you remember the fun and forget about any embarrassing moments or the side effects that follow.

"All drugs of abuse – alcohol, opiates, cocaine, methamphetamine – have adverse side effects. They make people nauseous or they give people hangovers, so why do we find them so rewarding? Why do we remember the good things about them and not the bad?” Dr. Karla Kaun of <a href="https://www.brown.edu/">Brown University</a> said in a press release. 

Although alcohol addiction and substance abuse can ruin lives, it’s difficult to fight the addiction. Kaun and her team wanted to see what role memories played in keeping addicts from kicking their habits.

The researchers used fruit flies to study how alcohol affects memory, since the molecular signals that trigger rewarding memories and avoidance are similar to the signals in human brains. Fruit flies have about 100,000 neurons compared to humans’ more than 100 billion, making them a sort of scale model. And scientists have already developed genetic tools that allow them to manipulate and observe fruit flies’ neural pathways.

The team trained fruit flies to seek out alcohol, then observed which proteins were activated by the activity. The study uncovered a specific gene, dopamine-2-like receptor, that appeared to play a role in the fruit flies’ alcohol addiction.

"The dopamine-2-like receptor is known to be involved in encoding whether a memory is pleasing or aversive," said Dr. Emily Petruccelli, who led the research. 

They found that alcohol changed the version of the protein the gene produced. The single tiny change seemed to trigger the brain to encode memories as pleasant, or ignore them. That, in turn, seems to trigger cravings.

The way alcoholic drinks affect the D2-like receptor could help explain why alcohol addiction is so difficult to conquer despite its negative consequences.

"If this works the same way in humans, one glass of wine is enough to activate the pathway, but it returns to normal within an hour," Kaun said. "After three glasses, with an hour break in between, the pathway doesn't return to normal after 24 hours. We think this persistence is likely what is changing the gene expression in memory circuits.”

The study has been published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/neuron/home">Neuron</a>.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.



The full study was recently published in <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2023GL104851" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geophysical Research Letters</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;
