Hotter summers are not just uncomfortable, they also changing the odds of getting sick from food. A new analysis links warmer air, higher moisture, specific dewpoint ranges, and longer daylight to spikes in Salmonella infections across two European countries. 



The team showed that risk climbs when average temperatures rise above about 50°F and days stretch past 12 to 15 hours.



Lead author <a href="https://www.londonntd.org/research/researchers/laura-c-gonzalez-villeta" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Laura C. González Villeta</a> of the University of Surrey’s <a href="https://www.surrey.ac.uk/school-veterinary-medicine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Veterinary Medicine</a> led work that tied laboratory confirmed Salmonella cases to local weather conditions using a transparent statistical approach.



The bacteria called Salmonella cause <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/15697-salmonella" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food poisoning</a> that often brings diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Common symptoms usually start within hours to a few days and most people recover without treatment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmonella-and-the-weather">Salmonella and the weather</h2>



Researchers linked daily case counts from the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-health-security-agency" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Health Security Agency</a> to detailed weather from the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Met Office</a>, then checked the model with national surveillance data from the Netherlands. 



They examined 14 factors, including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, sunshine, and dewpoint temperature.



Instead of forcing a complex equation to fit the data, the group calculated a conditional incidence that directly describes how often cases occur when specific combinations of weather are present. 



That method lets you see which trio of conditions lines up with higher infection counts without hiding the signal inside a black box.



The approach showed consistency when moved from one country to another after accounting for reporting differences. That matters because public <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/to-get-fit-and-stay-healthy-walk-this-exact-distance-every-day/">health</a> tools work best when they travel across borders without losing accuracy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-model-found">What the model found</h2>



Risk rose when average air temperatures topped roughly 50°F, day length sat between 12 and 15 hours, and dewpoint hovered around the mid 40s to about 50°F. The same pattern appeared regardless of location.



Not every weather knob seemed important. Wind speed, air pressure, and sunshine duration had little or no association with reported cases in this dataset.



Seasonal peaks in late summer were reproduced when the model fed on local weather. That gave officials a way to anticipate risk based on last week’s skies rather than waiting for lab reports to trickle in.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-weather-boosts-salmonella">How weather boosts Salmonella</h2>



Broader evidence lines up with these findings. A large <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11530612/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meta-analysis</a> of 23 Salmonella studies found about a 5 percent rise in risk for every 1.8°F increase in temperature.



Europe’s outbreak history shows why this topic matters. In 2018, nearly one in three foodborne outbreaks in the European Union were caused by Salmonella, according to an EFSA <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/news/salmonella-most-common-cause-foodborne-outbreaks-european-union" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>.



That baseline risk has not disappeared in recent years. Surveillance summaries still identify Salmonella as a leading cause of foodborne outbreaks across the region, with eggs and mixed foods often involved, as noted in EFSA’s public <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/7666" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">publication</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-public-health">What this means for public health</h2>



“The study highlights how weather plays a significant role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-are-overlooked-sources-of-antibiotic-resistant-salmonella/">Salmonella</a> outbreaks and provides a valuable tool for predicting future risks and tailoring interventions, particularly in the context of climate change,” said Dr. Villeta. The work is not just about describing patterns.&nbsp;



Weather aware forecasting can help agencies time inspections, target hygiene messaging, and plan surge capacity when the odds of illness tick up. 



Food businesses can also adjust cold chain checks, staff training, and consumer advice when riskier conditions line up.



Individuals are not powerless either. Keep cold foods cold, cook poultry and eggs to safe temperatures, refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours, and wash hands and surfaces, especially when the air is warm and the day runs long.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-tech-forecasting-tools">High-tech forecasting tools</h2>



Most forecasting tools lean on regression or time series fits that struggle with tangled, non linear interactions. 



The conditional incidence approach shows how combinations of temperature, humidity, and daylight align with cases, which is easier to interpret and to explain.



That clarity helps separate what drives risk from noise. It also allows public health teams to identify factor combinations that do not explain much, saving effort where it will not pay off.



Model outputs replicated real world peaks and mapped risk at fine spatial scales. That is the level where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childrens-screen-time-shapes-their-mental-health-as-teens/">health</a> departments and food producers make day to day choices.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limits-and-next-steps">Limits and next steps</h2>



The model tracks reported cases, which understate total infections. Even so, de trending and validation across two countries suggest the weather signals are real.



Future tests in different climates and income settings would show how far the method travels. Adding data on livestock density, land use, and consumer behavior could sharpen predictions without losing transparency.



Better early warnings do not replace basic food safety, but they can make those steps more timely. That is useful as warmer summers and longer heat seasons become more common.



The study is published in the <a href="https://www.journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-4453(25)00004-0/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal of Infection</a>.

The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are one of nature’s most awe-inspiring phenomena. 

For thousands of years people have looked up at the dancing spectacle that is the Northern Lights, and they continue to fascinate us today. 

Only appearing in the Northern Hemisphere, the streaks of green, blue, pink, and violet are caused by solar particles reacting with Earth’s magnetic field. 

The Sun is 93 million miles away, but the volatile star frequently sends charged particles speeding towards Earth. 

When the charged particles collide into Earth’s atmosphere and the magnetic field, it releases light particles. The particles spiral and move along with the magnetic current.

It’s thought that the gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are responsible for the different vivid colors, with oxygen producing a green hue and nitrogen causing a blue or red color.

These bright displays are visible from space, and the northern lights are not the only aurora on Earth. In the Southern hemisphere, the Southern Lights are called Aurora Australis and are only visible in Tasmania. 

The <a href="https://www.northernlightscentre.ca/">Northern Lights</a> have held different meanings throughout the years with some seeing the bright dancing colors as an omen or sign of prosperity.

Just make sure when planning your trip you know the best time of year to see the lights. 

Many summer vacationers to Alaska or Iceland are disappointed by the lack of lights because the closer you get to the Arctic Circle, the longer the summer days are, and in some areas the Sun never sets through the season.

In the summer of 2015, the waters off the coast of Santa Barbara turned a strange bright blue-green, and now the cause has finally been determined.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/">University of California, Santa Barbara</a>, discovered the culprit behind the tropical hues were aggressive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toxic-blue-tears-blooms-china/">blooms of algae</a>.

A study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, describes both the algae behind the transformation and the circumstances that allowed the algae to thrive.

The color was caused by blooms of coccolithophores called Emiliania huxleyi (E. hux), which unlike diatom algae, are not coated in silica but calcium carbonate. As the algae shed these plates, the calcium carbonate scatters light which gives the water a tropical lagoon appearance.

“When the water off the coast of California starts to look like you’re in the Caribbean, that’s really weird,” said Paul Matson, the lead author of the study.

E. hux are found everywhere, but for mid-latitude regions like Santa Barbara, large blooms are rare.

To find out what triggered such a massive bloom, the researchers first collected samples of the water when the blooms appeared to test chemistry, plankton density in the water, and determine the age of the algae.

The researchers also tracked the size of the bloom by analyzing satellite imagery taken once per day. Hourly maps of surface currents were combined with the satellite data to simulate algae blooms and track changes.  

A long period of warm water likely triggered the blooms, and the satellite data helped show where densities were not yet high enough to merit a bloom.

“That’s going to be where the new bloom comes from,” said Matson. “so we can look back and try to figure out what was going on in those areas that could have contributed to the bloom occurring.”

In the autumn of 2013, a large area of warm water moved into the northeast Pacific and stayed well into 2016, helped along by 2015 El Niño event.

“We had this extended period of time when we had extremely warm waters. We had low nutrient availability, and just strange things were happening,” said Matson.

E. hux can live off the nutrients released from decaying diatoms which surged during this period.

The research could help track other algae blooms to pinpoint pre-blooms and the source of the blooms. 

 “Our hope is that this approach can be used for studying other types of phytoplankton, like Pseudo-nitzschia, an important species of harmful algal blooms,” said Matson.

Why Santa Barbara’s coastal waters turned turquoise

Deforestation is a significant contributor to climate change as declines in forest cover reduces the amount of carbon stored in key terrestrial carbon sinks. 

But a new study has found that wood products like paper, lumber, and furniture help offset 1 percent of carbon emissions by locking carbon away.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a> found that carbon sequestered in wood products has been overlooked in national stored carbon estimates. 

A country’s wood products could then help offset emissions according to the researchers, and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/timber-innovation-offers-hope-industry/">timber industry</a> already offsets one percent of total carbon emissions. 

The researchers published their findings in a study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 

“Countries are looking for net-negative emissions strategies. So it's not just about lowering our emissions but pursuing strategies that might have storage potential, and harvested wood products are one of those options," said Craig Johnston, an author of the study. “The question is, can we continue to consume wood products and have climate change benefits associated with that consumption?”

Johnston and colleagues analyzed data on global lumber harvests and wood production from 1961 to 2015.  Next, the researchers used five models of economic and population growth to calculate future carbon storage in wood products.  

Across 180 countries, wood production offset 335 million tons of CO2 in 2015, 71 million tons of which had been previously unaccounted for because current guidelines don’t allow countries to count carbon stored in wood products made from local timber that are then exported. 

By 2065, this gap could leave another 50 million tons of CO2 unaccounted for. 

The models showed that dependent on economic growth, wood product carbon storage could rise more than 100 million tons by 2030. 

For most countries, wood products only offset a small fraction of emission in 2015, and future manufacturing will not drastically increase carbon storage. However, for countries like Sweden, wood products offset nine percent of emissions in 2015. 

Economic growth is key to any future offset emissions. 

“As wood products are produced, you're adding to this carbon pool in the country, but these products do eventually decay,” said Johnston. “There's carbon emissions today from furniture or lumber that was produced 50 or 75 years ago. So if we're not producing at a rate that at least offsets those emissions, then we'll actually see that carbon pool become a net source of emissions.”

How can we protect coral reefs from climate change? A team of experts has determined that the best way to protect <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/coral-bleaching-altering-fish-communities/">corals</a> from the damaging effects of climate change is to conserve a wide range of their habitats. This strategy could be applied to the conversation of many other species as well, both in the ocean and on land.

Study co-author Malin Pinsky is an associate professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at <a href="https://newbrunswick.rutgers.edu/">Rutgers University-New Brunswick</a>.

"Rather than conserving just the cold places with corals, we found that the best strategies will conserve a wide diversity of sites," said Professor Pinsky. "Hot reefs are important sources of heat-tolerant corals, while cold sites and those in between are important future refuges and stepping stones for corals as the water heats up."

According to the <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a>, coral reefs boost economies by billions of dollars a year from fishing, recreation and tourism, and other benefits. Worldwide, approximately 500 million people rely on coral reefs for food and income.

Corals are threatened by global warming, bleaching events, reef destruction, ocean acidification, and nutrient pollution. The study authors noted that while predictions about the future of corals are generally grim, there is growing recognition that they can adapt rapidly to a changing climate.

Professor Pinsky collaborated with scientists at the University of Washington, Utah State University, Coral Reef Alliance, Stanford University, and the University of Queensland to investigate how different conservation strategies may help coral reefs survive climate change. 

The researchers modeled a range of potential strategies, including efforts to protect sites where existing coral populations appeared to be "preadapted" to future conditions and efforts to conserve sites that will be suitable for corals in the future. The researchers determined that a strategy to conserve many different kinds of reefs would work best.

"Corals are facing a gauntlet over the coming years and decades from warming oceans, but we found that reef conservation in general can really boost corals' ability to evolve and cope with these changes," said Professor Pinsky. 

"There is strength in diversity, even when it comes to corals. We need to think not only about saving the cooler places, where corals can best survive in the future, but also the hot places that already have heat-resistant corals. It's about protecting a diversity of habitats, which scientists hadn't fully appreciated before."

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/nclimate/">Nature Climate Change</a>.

A study led by the <a href="https://uci.edu/">University of California, Irvine</a> has found that nations will fail to meet their commitments to stabilize the global mean temperature by 2050 unless fossil fuel-burning power plants and vehicles are retired before the end of their typical lifespans. 

"We need to reach net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by midcentury to achieve stabilization of global temperatures as called for in international agreements such as the Paris accords," said lead author Dan Tong, a postdoctoral scholar in Earth System Science. "But that won't happen unless we get rid of the long-lasting power plants, boilers, furnaces and vehicles before the end of their useful life and replace them with non-emitting energy technologies."

Rapid economic and industrial development in places like China and India has drastically increased the amount of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/co2-emissions-dropping-fossil-fuel/">fossil fuel-burning</a> infrastructure over the past decade. At the same time, the average age of infrastructure in developed countries has decreased. In the United States, for example, new natural gas power plants have replaced old coal-fired plants.

Based on the assumption that power plants will operate for about 40 years and that light-duty vehicles will be on the road for 15 years, the researchers used detailed data sets of existing fossil fuel-burning infrastructure to estimate "committed" carbon dioxide emissions.

According to the study, the total emissions from existing energy infrastructure take up the entire carbon budget to limit average global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These emissions also use up close to two-thirds of the budget to keep warming to under 2 degrees Celsius by 2050.

The researchers investigated how early CO2-emitting infrastructure may need to be retired to meet international climate goals. They found that if current power plants were retired after 25 years of operation, rather than 40, global warming could still potentially be limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius. 

The use of existing infrastructure, however, will result in 658 gigatons of CO2 during its operational lifetime. Furthermore, the power plants that are currently being planned, permitted, or under construction will emit an additional 188 gigatons of CO2 if they become operational.

"Our results show that there's basically no room for new CO2-emitting infrastructure under the international climate goals," said study co-author Professor Steven Davis. "Rather, existing fossil fuel-burning power plants and industrial equipment will need to be retired early unless they can be feasibly retrofitted with carbon capture and storage technologies or their emissions are offset by negative emissions. Without such radical changes, we fear the aspirations of the Paris agreement are already at risk."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Fossil fuel-burning infrastructure may be retired early to limit global warming

According to new research led by the <a href="https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/">University of Plymouth</a>, the ocean experienced a global shift around 170 million years ago when predator-prey relationships took control of the fate of the food web. Until that point, the success of marine organisms had been strongly controlled by non-biological factors, such as climate and ocean chemistry.

The study authors explained that this transformation coincided with the burgeoning of calcium carbonate-secreting plankton and the deposits they distributed across the seabed. The <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/marine-plankton-glow-predators/">plankton</a> likely stabilized the chemical composition of the ocean, which provided the right conditions for marine life to diversify on a massive scale. 

"Today, huge areas of the ocean floor are covered with the equivalent of chalk, made up of microscopic organisms that rose to dominance in the middle of the Jurassic period," explained study lead author Kilian Eichenseer. "The chalky mass helps to balance out the acidity of the ocean and, with that balance in place, organisms are less at the mercy of short-term perturbations of ocean chemistry than they might have been previously. It is easier to secrete a shell, regardless of its mineralogy, if the ocean chemistry is stable."

In the 540 million years since multicellular life first appeared, the influence of both the biological and non-biological environment has driven its evolution. How and when the balance between these factors changed, however, has been a mystery.

The researchers set out to test the theory that the evolutionary importance of the non-biological environment declined over time. They based their analysis on the minerals that make up calcified seashells, aragonite and calcite, which also form non-biologically in the ocean.

The study revealed that up until the middle of the Jurassic period, around 170 million years ago, the ecological success of shell-secreting marine organisms was strongly tied to their shell composition. In other words, organisms that secreted the mineral that was environmentally favored had an evolutionary advantage.

The rise of calcifying plankton, however, expanded the production of calcium carbonate across the entire ocean and revolutionized the Earth-Life system.

"During the Earth's history there have been several major events that shaped the evolution of life on our planet, such as the five big mass extinctions or the radiation of complex animals during the 'Cambrian Explosion,'" explained study co-author Dr. Uwe Balthasar.

"Our research identifies a previously overlooked event of this magnitude around 170 million years ago when the emergence of calcium carbonate-secreting plankton lifted constraints on the evolution of other marine organisms that we did not know existed. As a result, life in the ocean has diversified to levels far beyond what existed before."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ngeo/">Nature Geoscience</a>.

The Earth-Life system was revolutionized 170 million years ago in the ocean

The Wind River Reservation is a 1.7 million-plus acre home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes. The reservation was established in 1864 by the Bridger-Teton treaty with the US government. As with most reservations, this one had been stripped of its <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/bison-american-survival-story/">bison</a> herds, leaving the Native American residents on the land more dependent on food from the federal government and farming than they were traditionally. 

A paper in The <a href="https://history.msu.edu/hst321/files/2010/07/smits-on-bison.pdf">Western Historical Quarterly</a> reports how US military leaders in the late 1800s encouraged the slaughter of bison and often saw such destruction as a way of subjugating and defeating Native Americans. Because of this and the importance of the bison to the physical and spiritual cultures of many western Native American groups, bison remain a potent symbol of indigenous identity. 

Like much of the ecological landscape of North America, The Wind River Reservation’s ecology is a broken remnant of its pre-Colombian glory. Jason Baldes, Tribal Bison Coordinator for the National Wildlife Federation and Wind River Reservation tribal member, told me that after the bison, pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep were extirpated from the Wind River Reservation prior to 1984. Baldes compared the American prairie that once was to an unspoiled Africa.

"I took a trip to East Africa with my dad in the late 90s and witnessed the wildebeest migration,” Baldes said. “It was incredible to see, but what was more unfathomable was that the 1.5 million wildebeest is less than 5% of what the bison population was here, less than 200 years ago. My dad is a retired wildlife biologist, and I grew up understanding the intrinsic value of wildlife as part of our cultural ties and subsistence lifestyle, it is what we eat."

The basic fact of Native American groups eating bison and other wild animals shows the importance of these creatures. Wild animals are not simply animals to enjoy looking at, they are life itself. One could argue for entire tribal groups, bison and other wild game were independence as well. 

This is why Jason Baldes has been working with the National Wildlife Federation to move bison that would otherwise be culled, off of federal land and reintroduced to Native American land, including the Wind River Reservation. To Baldes, the work is important for the healing of his people from past atrocities and the preservation of cultural identity.

"The importance of buffalo to our people cannot be understated, it is our relative,” Baldes said. “The Eastern Shoshone are the gweechoon deka, the buffalo eaters. We have had ties to the animal for millennia, but have been separated for 130+ years.  Buffalo is part of us, and is central to our ceremonies and spiritual belief ways, and is important for our diet. Even though they haven’t been in our community for a long time, we are still tied to them. The buffalo are most important for our young people, so they can know who they are, and be proud of being Shoshone."

The <a href="https://www.nwf.org/">National Wildlife Federation</a> has been working with tribal and the federal government to promote reintroduction of wildlife including bison to Native American lands. Recently, with the involvement of the National Wildlife Federation, an agreement was made between the Fort Peck Tribes and the Eastern Shoshone of the Wind River Reservation. The Fort Peck Reservation already has a large and healthy bison population, descendants of bison from Yellowstone National Park.

The population is healthy enough to support hunting, a small step towards returning bison to the center of life again. Now, the Fort Peck Tribes have agreed to exchange bison with the Wind River Reservation. Initially, five male bison were set to be released on June 23 during a powwow. Unfortunately, bad weather delayed capturing bison on the Fort Peck Reservation and moving them to their new home at the Wind River Reservation. The good news is that after a delay, the bison were released on the evening of the 26th. Jason Baldes told me this was an important step for bison conservation but also as a display of tribal sovereignty.

"This release is important because it brings together Tribes of the Buffalo nation,” Baldes said. “The Government to Government agreement between the Fort Peck Tribes of Montana and the Eastern Shoshone Tribe demonstrates the importance of the buffalo to our communities. Fort Peck has led the way in Yellowstone Bison conservation and restoration, and they want to help other tribes ‘bring the buffalo home.’ This will be the first Tribe to Tribe interstate transfer of Yellowstone Buffalo. This exercise in sovereignty among Tribes, strengthens buffalo conservation and cultural revitalization in our communities and sets the pace for other Tribes to do the same." 

Currently, the Wind River bison herd is modest. Before the release, the reservation was home to 27 bison, including four recent calves. The new bison bring the total to 32, but Jason Baldes seems optimistic about the future. Work is ongoing to secure a larger range for the small bison herd and grow it larger.

“There is potential, on the Wind River Reservation, to manage buffalo on hundreds of thousands of acres if people are willing to do it,” Baldes said. “A benchmark for conservation populations is a minimum of 1000 animals, in order to maintain genetic heterogeneity and variability. Two to three times that benchmark are foreseeable. Hunting by tribal members will be the primary mode of management.”

The reservation has already come a long way towards restoring their native wildlife. 7 of 7 native ungulate species are on the Wind River Reservation, with six of them living in populations large enough to support tribal hunting. Bison are currently not on the Wind River Reservation in numbers large enough to support hunting. The history of the bison is perhaps unique in American history, often treated as a Native American cow rather than a wild animal in its own right. Jason Baldes told me that to create a better future for the bison, respect is needed.

“For some reason, people feel the need to treat buffalo like cattle, through roundups, ear-tagging, vaccinations etc,” he said. “No other wildlife species go through that treatment. We need a paradigm shift to one that respects the intrinsic value the animal has. Buffalo is a keystone species, benefitting a host of others as it utilizes the landscape. We shouldn’t measure the value of buffalo on the landscape in terms of money.”

Wind River Reservation welcomes bison in historic exchange between tribes

From 2015 to 2018, the world saw its four hottest years in recorded history – and 2019 is on track to make it five, according to a new report.

That has the <a href="https://www.un.org/en/">United Nations</a> worried, especially since growing levels of greenhouse gases are expected to make the global warming trend worse, according to the <a href="https://public.wmo.int/en">World Meteorological Organization</a>. 

That could drive further ocean heat, <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/crumbling-ice-arch-in-the-arctic/">ice melt</a> and glacier retreat, causing sea levels to rise even further in coming decades – and they’re already rising at increasing rates, according to the <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/sealevel.html">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a>.

“Increasingly we hear the phrase climate emergency,” WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said. “It is not just about climate. Climate change impacts the ocean, water resources, food security, ecosystems and the sustainable development of the entire planet.”

The news comes just days after the WMO verified the <a href="https://public.wmo.int/en/media/press-release/wmo-verifies-3rd-and-4th-hottest-temperature-recorded-earth">third and fourth hottest temperatures</a> ever records, both tying the 2013 second-place record of 129.2 degrees Fahrenheit, recorded in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/10-hottest-places-earth/">California’s Death Valley</a> – which also holds the title for the hottest temperature in recorded history. Mitribah, Kuwait hit the mark on July 21, 2016, followed by Turbat, Pakistan on May 28, 2017.

Europe has been hit with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/europe-early-summer-heatwave/">record-breaking early heat wave</a>. More than 50 German weather stations have recorded some of the hottest June temperatures in the country’s recorded history. Drought is affecting the Horn of Africa and India, where hot weather has delayed the monsoon season.

The WMO has invited hundreds of scientists, world leaders, climate action specialists, business leaders, youths and others to Abu Dhabi for a meeting to take stock of the current state of the world climate over the next two days. The meeting will help provide guidance ahead of the U.N.’s upcoming <a href="https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/un-climate-summit-2019.shtml">Climate Action Summit</a> in September.

Among the topics of discussion will be the role greenhouse gases – especially carbon dioxide – play in the changing global climate. The levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and ocean are expected to remain unchanged for centuries – if not grow – even if immediate action is taken.

“The last time the Earth experienced a comparable concentration of carbon dioxide was 3 to 5 million years ago when the temperature was 2 to 3 degrees Celsius warmer and sea level was 10 to 20 meters higher than now,” Taalas said.

The past five years could be the hottest in recorded history

New York City has <a href="https://legistar.council.nyc.gov/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=3940953&amp;GUID=506493D1-9DF1-4289-8893-4AF892557355&amp;Options=ID%7cText%7c&amp;Search=">declared a climate emergency</a>, following in the footsteps of Sydney, Australia and the UK. 

With a population of over 8.62 million, NYC is the first city with over one million residents and the largest in the US to make such a sweeping statement on climate change and the troubling impacts of human emissions. 

Currently, fewer than 20 local governments in the US have made similar declarations. 

Worldwide over 670 city, district and town councils across 15 countries have declared climate emergencies, according to the <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tb-LklFWLujYnjmCSvCWRcLUJCCWAL27dKPzVcFq9CQ/edit#gid=0">Innovation for Cool Earth Forum</a>.

There is no specific definition or set list of guidelines a city or country must follow to declare a climate emergency, but it’s an act that acknowledges the pressing urgency of climate change and commits a government to action. 

In 2008 the United Kingdom passed a law stating that the country must slash emissions by 80 percent, but recently Prime Minister Theresa May proposed legislation promising to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/12/world/europe/uk-emissions-net-zero.html">reduce emissions to zero by 2050. </a>

As one of the few countries in the world to actively work to cut emissions in accordance with the pressing concerns of climate change, the UK is leading the charge. 

New York City’s climate emergency declaration mentions the disproportionate contributions made by the US in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. 

A recent study showed that the US military is one of the<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/us-military-emits-co2/"> largest polluters in the world</a>, emitting more greenhouse gasses than some small industrialized countries. 

“The United States of America has disproportionately contributed to the climate emergency and has repeatedly obstructed global efforts to transition toward a green economy, and thus bears an extraordinary responsibility to rapidly address these existential threats,” New York lawmakers wrote.

New York City has declared a climate emergency, following in...

The smallest forms of life are essential for the health of the entire marine food web, including many of the fish that are in the greatest commercial demand. A new study suggests that focusing on individual fish populations is not an effective strategy to protect ecosystems from the damage and insecurity associated with <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/older-fish-disappearing/">overfishing</a>. 

"In simple terms, to successfully manage fisheries in an ecosystem, the rate of removal for all fishes combined must be equal to or less than the rate of renewal for all those fish,"said study co-author Jason Link, who is the senior scientist for ecosystem management at <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/">NOAA Fisheries</a>.

The researchers propose that three particular indices could be monitored, using widely available catch and satellite data, to determine when ecosystem overfishing is occurring. These factors include: when the total catch of all fish is declining, the total catch rate or fishing effort required to get that catch is declining, and the total landings relative to the production in that ecosystem exceed suitable limits.

"Detecting overfishing at an ecosystem level will help to avoid many of the impacts we have seen when managing fished species on a population-by-population basis, and holds promise for detecting major shifts in ecosystem and fisheries productivity much more quickly," said Link.

The suggested thresholds for each index are based on the known limits of the productivity of any given part of the ocean. 

"We know that climate change is shifting many fish populations toward the poles, yet the fishing fleets and associated industries are not shifting with them," said Link. "That already has had serious economic and cultural impacts." 

The study authors noted that these shifts can be followed over time to see how they can exacerbate or even contribute to ecosystem overfishing. The three proposed indices represent a potential international standard for tracking the status of global fisheries ecosystems.

"They are easy to estimate and interpret, are based on widely repeated and available data, and are a practical way to identify when an ecosystem would be experiencing overfishing based on well understood and well-accepted primary production and food web limitations," said Link. 

"It would eliminate a lot of the debate about whether or not ecosystem overfishing is happening and instead focus attention on solutions. But until we can define and identify what ecosystem overfishing is, we cannot begin to address it."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Three indicators could help protect marine ecosystems from overfishing

The smallest forms of life are essential for the health...

At the beginning of the 20th century, the magnetic north pole was located in Canada. In 2000, it was in Greenland. And now, almost 20 years later, the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-north-pole-shifting/">magnetic north pole</a> is currently en route to Siberia, moving eastward at about 40 kilometres per year. And with the Earth’s magnetic field prone to reverse its polarity, the Earth and our technology could be at risk for major disruption.

It’s been long believed that Earth’s magnetic field is generated by an electrically conductive liquid at the center of the Earth called a geodynamo. This liquid is moved around through the convection currents between the Earth’s inner and outer core, and as it moves, hot liquid iron, packed with electrons, rises toward the surface of the outer core, cools, becomes more dense, and descends again. This process is thought to generate the magnetic field.

However, the fluid also moves as the planet rotates, and its viscosity also contributes to the flow pattern, thus causing a tangled web of magnetic field lines. Although turbulent, the flow moves incredibly slow, thus the poles shift gradually.

“When we say the flow is turbulent, we mean on a timescale of tens of thousands of years,” Gary Glatzmaier, from the <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/">University of California, Santa Cruz</a>, told <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24232360-700-the-north-pole-is-moving-and-if-it-flips-life-on-earth-is-in-trouble/">NewScientist</a>.

But if the poles move, does this mean they can flip entirely? And if so, are we in danger? After all, the current magnetic field deflects charged particles in the solar wind.

Earth’s magnetic field has flipped before, NewScientist reports, and it has also grown weaker and stronger throughout its existence. In fact, there have been 183 pole reversals in the past 83 million years, with the last one happening 780,000 years ago. The field has even been on the verge of collapsing entirely — it spent about 75,000 years rapidly changing direction, according to John Tarduno, from the <a href="https://www.rochester.edu/">University of Rochester, New York</a>, per NewScientist. And if that had happened, life as we know it would be nonexistent. 

Luckily, “when the inner core started to form, it provided a new energy source for the magnetic field,” Tarduno said, thus giving life the opportunity to form later down the road.

To attempt to track the magnetic field’s movement and the potential for the poles to switch, scientists are in the process of developing computer models to accurately predict the field’s next move.

“Our computer models are complicated, but not nearly as complicated as the reality down there,” Glatzmaier said. “The flow structure is twisting and shearing the existing magnetic field, and generating more magnetic field in the process. We have to use a very crude approximation of this.”

Furthermore, other scientists have created physical models to track the magnetic field in a more realistic sense. According to NewScientist, Daniel Lathrop, from the <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a>, has created an accurate model of the Earth’s core — a ball of rotating liquid sodium, encased in stainless steel with a solid metal core at the center, which can be rotated independently.

31 magnetometers distributed around the outer surface of the liquid sodium ball measure the generated field. And because this model core is so much smaller than the actual thing, Lathrop’s team compensate with a better conducting metal than iron and faster rotation — the sphere rotates four times per second when at full speed.

Via this model, Lathrop’s team have shown that the turbulent flow of liquid metal will amplify and sustain a magnetic field, proving the geodynamo hypothesis true. Although they haven’t managed to get a magnetic field to spontaneously appear, like Earth’s did, they have been able to apply a seed field, amplified by the sloshing sodium.

But this evidence is not yet accurate enough to predict when Earth’s magnetic field will undergo reversals.

Others are working on models to answer this question, and all their effort is appreciated. If we can better understand the Earth's magnetic field and its ability to flip, we can better protect our technology and power grids from solar storms and cosmic rays.

The north pole is moving at a dangerous pace

At the beginning of the 20th century, the magnetic north...

A new kind of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-pollution-health-threats/">plastic pollution</a> has been found on the coast of the Portuguese islands of Madeira. 

Researchers from the <a href="http://www.mare-centre.pt/en">MARE-Marine and Environmental Research Center </a>first noticed patches of blue and grey plastic encrusted on rocks in 2016. The newly termed “plasticrust,” is visible at low tide and has since spread across the region. 

The patches look like blotches of melted plastic, and chemical analysis confirmed that the patches were made of polyethylene, a common plastic used in single-use packaging. 

The researchers have monitored the phenomena, and the new form of plastic pollution is discussed in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969719326919?via%3Dihub">Science of the Total Environment</a>. 

Plasticrust is different from the plastic-rock conglomerates that form when melted plastic mixes with sediment. 

It’s not known where the plastic came from or why it adhered to the volcanic rocks the way it did. So far, the single patch discovered three years ago now covers 10 percent of the shore of Madeira. 

The artificial crust is replacing natural crusts and films, making it difficult for barnacles and snails to adhere to their preferred habitat. Winkle sea snails were abundant on the crusts, but the researchers say that the snails may be unknowingly ingesting plastic as they feed on algae perched on the plasticrust. 

“[The crusts] likely originated by the crash of large pieces of plastic against the rocky shore, resulting in plastic crusting the rock in a similar way algae or lichens do,” Ignacio Gestoso, a marine ecologist who first spotted the plasticrust, told <a href="https://earther.gizmodo.com/a-strange-new-blend-of-rock-and-plastic-is-forming-on-a-1835742900">Gizmodo</a>. 

The study further highlights the world’s plastic crisis as plastic becomes more and more entwined in the ecosystem. 

“As a marine ecologist researcher, I would prefer to be reporting other types of findings, and not a paper describing this sad new way of plastic pollution,” Gestoso said. “Unfortunately, the magnitude of the problem is so huge that few places are free of plastic pollution.”

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.



As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.

Scientists have made a startling discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn's moon Mimas</a>. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. By studying subtle irregularities in Mimas's orbit around Saturn, researchers detected the gravitational signature of liquid water hidden 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the moon's icy shell.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unlikely-ocean-world">An unlikely ocean world</h2>



At only 400 kilometers in diameter, Mimas seemed like the least likely candidate to harbor a subsurface ocean. Unlike other ocean moons such as Europa and Enceladus, which show clear surface signs of internal activity, Mimas displays no obvious hints of the liquid water beneath its ancient, crater-scarred exterior.



"Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-astrobiology">Implications for astrobiology</h2>



The ocean's recent formation makes Mimas a prime target for studying how oceans develop and potentially support life. This discovery adds another member to the exclusive club of ocean worlds in our solar system, each offering unique insights into the conditions necessary for habitability.

Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.

Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
