For something you can’t see with the naked eye, algae sure know how to shake things up. Around 14,000 years ago, microscopic Antarctic algae helped slow down global warming by pulling huge amounts of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.



Scientists just figured out how they did it - and why the same process that once helped cool the planet could play a critical role in shaping the future of our climate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctic-algae-changed-the-climate">Antarctic Algae changed the climate</h2>



Back then, Earth was gradually warming after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/disastrous-climate-changes-of-the-last-ice-age-could-happen-again/">last ice age</a>. However, something unusual occurred in the Southern Hemisphere: the warming paused. 



This period, referred to as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-co2-will-cause-rapid-climate-change-in-the-tropical-andes/">Antarctic Cold Reversal</a>, was a time when sea ice expanded quickly in winter and melted quickly in spring. That spring melt converted the Southern Ocean into a super buffet for a particular type of algae, Phaeocystis.



These tiny ocean plants went wild. They multiplied, and in doing so, they pulled vast quantities of carbon dioxide - one of the primary drivers of global warming - out of the atmosphere and stored it away in the sea.



Here’s the twist: until now, we had no idea <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-ice-loss-alters-the-color-of-ocean-light-and-life-struggles-to-adapt/">Phaeocystis</a> even played a role. Scientists couldn’t find any trace of them in the usual fossil records. 



Now, thanks to a new method that recovers ancient DNA from the ocean floor, researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany have filled in this crucial missing piece of the climate puzzle.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unlocking-antarctica-s-hidden-record">Unlocking Antarctica’s hidden record</h2>



The team studied a sediment core taken from nearly 2,000 feet deep in the Bransfield Strait, just off the Antarctic Peninsula. Layer by layer, this core preserves snapshots of ocean history going back 14,000 years.



By analyzing the ancient DNA trapped in that sediment, the scientists found genetic fingerprints of Phaeocystis during the cold reversal period. No one had ever identified these algae in the past using standard geochemical methods.



“Our study shows that these algal blooms contributed to a significant reduction in global atmospheric CO2 levels during a climatically important transition phase characterized by high sea ice extent,” said Josefine Friederike Weiß from the <a href="https://www.awi.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alfred Wegener Institute</a>, lead author of the study.



They also measured something else: a high ratio of barium to iron in the sediment. That ratio is tied to how much organic material - like dead algae - sinks to the seafloor. In this case, the data pointed to intense algal growth during times of heavy spring melt.



“The further the sea ice expands in winter, the larger the area in spring where nutrient-rich meltwater enters the surface sea - and therefore the zone where Phaeocystis algae find ideal growth conditions. As a result, greater sea ice extent leads directly to a larger region with high algal productivity.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-today-s-melting-ice-is-a-warning">Why today’s melting ice is a warning</h2>



The same Phaeocystis algae that once helped cool the world are now struggling to survive. With <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-antarctic-sea-ice-loss-is-causing-severe-storms-around-the-world/">Antarctic sea ice</a> declining at a record rate, the conditions that previously drove these algae blooms are vanishing.



That’s not just bad news for the algae. These blooms power entire food webs. They feed tiny animals, which feed fish, which in turn feed everything from squid to seals. If Phaeocystis disappears, the whole system could unravel.



Even worse, these algae are really good at one specific job: getting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-ocean-holds-carbon-hidden-mechanisms-revealed/">carbon</a> to sink deep into the ocean. Losing them could mean more carbon sticks around in the atmosphere, heating the planet faster.



And there’s another concern. Phaeocystis releases a gas called dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which helps form clouds. More clouds mean more sunlight bounces back into space. Fewer algae mean fewer clouds. That’s one more way climate change could end up feeding on itself.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctic-algae-holds-future-lessons">Antarctic algae holds future lessons</h2>



The study shows why scientists must look beyond conventional methods. By combining geological tools with DNA analysis, researchers are creating a more accurate picture of how the ocean shapes our climate - and how it might respond in the future.



The research also highlights a larger trend in climate science. For years, scientists focused mainly on ice cores and chemical markers.



Now, by analyzing the genetic material of ancient microbes, we can see what species were doing during pivotal climate events - and what those behaviors could mean for us today.



This is important because forecasting future climate change isn’t only about tracking temperature or carbon levels. It’s about understanding the living systems that help regulate them - such as the algae and the seas they inhabit.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-025-01761-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Geoscience</a>.

Water in the desert: the secret that holds a delicate net of life in its grasp.  

According to the definition of the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">USGS</a>, Piñon-Juniper ecosystems are not technically <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/10-largest-deserts-world/">deserts</a> but at 10-15 inches of rain annually, they are quite dry, and locals commonly refer to it as a desert.

When I was studying Biology in college, I would go hiking in the arid piñon-juniper woodlands of the Colorado plateau.  On these hikes I collected bits of dry moss gathered on rocks here and there.

Back in the lab, I put the moss I put the moss into petri dishes with a little distilled water and let it sit overnight.  Under a microscope, the change was amazing.  What seemed like a dead piece of plant became a forest teeming with microscopic wild life.  

Rotifers; nightmare creatures in miniature beat the cilia of their wheel like heads, pulling unwary prey into jaws that mash like a beating heart.  The cilia actually create a vortex in the surrounding water, pulling food into their mouths like a whirlpool.  The rotifer ‘jaws’ (called trophi) are almost continuously moving to crush food particles.  The whole body of the rotifers telescope, making the animal seem larger or smaller depending on how stretched it is.  Rotifers are a group, making up phylum Rotifera, consisting of about 1750 species in three separate classes.  Rotifers are found almost anywhere there is a bit of water and even can remain dormant in the desert, clinging to dry moss as I found them.  

Nematodes were also found in the moss, elegant, round worms related to hookworms, the nematodae I found were mostly harmless.  There are 25,000 species of nematode described with estimates as high as 40,000 species existing worldwide.  The nematodes move like eels through the water.  These tiny creatures are found everywhere from soil to water all over the world.  Nematodes (along with other microbes) are important in the breakdown of waste and recycling of nutrients vital to plant and animal life.  

The creature I was looking for under the microscope, the object of my research was the legendary water bear of the phylum Tardigrada.  Eight-legged Tardigrades lumber through the scene of microscopic forest moving much like their namesake: bears.  Most tardigrades eat plants or bacteria but some prey upon smaller species of tardigrade.  

Much has been made of the toughness of tardigrades and for good reason.  Water bears have the ability to enter a dormant ‘tun’ state in which they appear dead and can remain for years.  Tardigrades found in moss that was dried out for museum collections over 120 years old have claimed to be revived with added water.  Tardigrades have been blasted into space on satellites and many of them survived, some females even laying eggs that hatched healthy young.  Tardigrades were put into liquid air at -200 °C for 21 months and sprang back to life with added water at normal temperatures.  The lowest recorded natural temperature on earth was -89.2 °C for context.  In fact water bears can survive almost absolute zero and have also been boiled in alcohol.

As long as a tardigrade is in its tun state, there is very little these tiny creatures can’t survive.  The amazing thing about tardigrades is the bizarreness of something that’s nearly everywhere.  Just like all the strange creatures I saw under the microscope, you’ve drank a water bear or two in your life, swam with them, had them stick to your skin, without ever being aware.

Water bears, rotifers and nematodes along with whole hosts of other microscopic or near microscopic (you can just barely see some of these with the naked eye but they’re really never noticed) have a strange similarity.  There is little pigment in the outer membrane of these animals and the effect is of looking at what appears to be an illustrated animal.  Small organs, even food being consumed or digested can be seen within the animal with a microscope.  This is partly with the rotifers ever moving jaws are so eerie, they look like a beating heart within the body and you can watch food particles crushed within.  Watching microscopic creatures is disorienting, you’re introduced to a world omnipresent but never noticed, like stepping into another dimension.  

The microscopic world all around us was so hard to accept at its discovery that van Leeuwenhoek, the Dutch microscope builder and first to describe microscopic ‘animalcules’ as he called them was widely mocked.  Anthony van Leeuwenhoek was a tradesman that originally used microscopes to study the structure of textiles and accidentally found his animalcules swimming in rain water.  A letter he sent to the British Royal Society was responded to quite rudely with utter disregard to the gravity of his discovery:

“Your letter of October 10th has been received here with amusement. Your account of myriad ‘little animals’ seen swimming in rainwater, with the aid of your so-called ‘microscope’ caused the members of the society considerable merriment when read at our most recent meeting. However, a vote having been taken among the members (accompanied, I regret to inform you, by considerable giggling) it has been decided not to publish your communication in the Proceedings of this esteemed society. However, all here wish your ‘little animals’ health, prodigality and good husbandry by their ingenious ‘discoverer’ “

In the long run of course, Leeuwenhoek has been vindicated and the world of miniscule creatures around us is known to far surpass the world of visible organisms in sheer numbers, as well as being some of the first organisms on earth and their ability to live everywhere.

Saguaros are big… very big for cacti.  That’s one of the first impressions one is likely to get about the plants of the Sonoran Desert, the only place the iconic cactus lives naturally.  

Looking closely at a Saguaro, one gets the impression that the cactus has a hard life.  It’s clear that needles and a generally unappealing (at least for food) nature doesn’t make the plant’s life problem-free.  Of course there are the physical limitations to living in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/10-largest-deserts-world/">Sonoran Desert</a>, things such as lack of water and high summer temperatures but there are also scars on saguaros.  Scars on saguaros sometimes come from cold temperatures that leave a pinched look on some of the cactus.  There are also cactus that I am convinced were shot, possible by inebriated college kids looking for senseless fun.  There are holes clearly made by insects, small but still probably somewhat damaging and then there are bigger holes.

Other cacti have a lot of holes as well.  Some holes are caused by insects but javelina (often thought a pig, javelina are actually peccaries) and desert tortoise take bites from various species of prickly pear.  Spines don’t mean that no one will eat you.  Cactus fruit are also a big source of food and some Native American groups improvised many culinary uses for saguaro (and other cacti) fruit as well as fruit gathering ceremonies.  Saguaro fruit can even be made into wine.         

Woodpeckers leave holes in saguaros for their homes but not all woodpecker holes are the same.  Gilded Flickers, (Colaptes chrysoides) a beautiful woodpecker eats insects but unlike non-desert species also eats cactus fruit.  The gilded flicker also uses saguaros for a home.  The flicker hammers through to the center of saguaro cactus and above their holes you sometimes see the rest of the plant leaning over sharply, drooping due to a loss of its structural integrity.

Gila Woodpeckers (Melanerpes uropygialis) also make their homes inside of saguaros but with a different method.  Gila Woodpeckers break through only the outside layer of a cactus.  The cactus is allowed to heal, creating a pocket of scar tissue.  Sometimes these pockets of scar tissue (called boots) were collected by Native Americans to use for carrying water.  Since the Gila Woodpecker doesn’t damage the saguaro’s hard wooden interior, the cactus stands strong still, with just superficial damage when compared to that done by Gilded Flickers.      

The advantages of nesting in cacti are obvious if you consider them for a bit.  A bird can reach a cactus rather easily by flying to it but imagine being a hungry cat trying to climb the plant to catch a bird.  Cactus Wrens nest in Cholla cactus, building tubes of needles and sticks to raise eggs in.  Sometimes Cactus Wrens also build dummy nests to lure would be predators to the wrong nest.

Life in the desert seems exceedingly hard, and there is less biodiversity than in some places, but all it really requires is a bit of innovation and natural selection is an amazing innovator.

Cacti, birds, and life in the Sonoran Desert

In a new interview, Scott Pruitt, the head of the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency </a>(EPA), has suggested that global warming could be beneficial to humans.

Speaking with Gerard Ramahlo from <a href="http://news3lv.com/news/local">News 3</a> in Nevada, Pruitt said:

“Do we really know what the ideal surface temperature should be in the year 2100, in the year 2018? It’s fairly arrogant for us to think we know exactly what it should be in 2100. No one disputes the climate changes, is changing, that’s, we see that, that’s constant. We obviously contribute to it; we live in the climate, right?…Now measuring that with precision, Gerard, I think is more challenging than is let on at times but I think the bigger question is…is it an existential threat? Is it something that is unsustainable or what kind of effect or harm is this going to have? I mean, we know that humans have most flourished during times of what, warming trends. I mean, so, so, I think there’s assumptions made that because the climate is warming that that necessarily is a bad thing.”

Last month, all mention of climate change was removed from federal websites. Not long after, it was revealed the Pruitt personally oversaw the removal of climate change information from the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">EPA’s</a> website.

As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scott-pruitt-doubts-global-warming/">we reported</a> last year, Pruitt previously told <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/09/epa-chief-scott-pruitt.html">CNBC’s</a> Joe Kernen, “I would not agree that [CO2] is a primary contributor to the global warming that we see. I believe that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do, and there’s tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact.”

What’s puzzling is that despite Pruitt and President Trump’s consistent opposition to the facts of climate change, the government still released a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-driving-climate-change/">report</a> confirming that humans are in fact driving climate change.

And as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-costing-billions/">we’ve reported</a>, extreme weather caused by climate change will cost the United States over $350 billion, according to a report from the <a href="https://www.gao.gov/assets/690/687465.pdf">U.S Government Accountability Office</a> (GAO).

A new study maps out a plausible plan for powering nearly 139 countries on only renewable clean energy, reducing the impacts of climate change and making blackouts a thing of the past.

The research was conducted by Mark Jacobson and colleagues from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> and published a manuscript in the journal Renewable Energy.

The report proposes three different options that will provide a reliable source of power to all the major energy sectors including transportation, heating and cooling, and agriculture.

Jacobson had previously published a study that suggested it was possible to transition 139 counties to be completely reliant on renewable energy by 2050, and this new research builds on these same principles.

“Our main result is that there are multiple solutions to the problem,” said Jacobson. “This is important because the greatest barrier to the large-scale implementation of clean, renewable energy is people's perception that it's too hard to keep the lights on with random wind and solar output.”

The central component of the new research is working towards transferring countries to rely on renewable energy without fear of power outages or inconsistent output.

The researchers needed to first understand the energy needs of 139 countries and match those needs with potential energy that could be provided by wind, water, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melbourne-tram-network-solar/">solar power</a>.

From this, Jacobson and his team were able to create a map of energy needs using computational modeling programs that matched supply and demand in 30-second increments for five years from 2050 to 2054.

By factoring in predicted weather patterns and solutions for storing excess energy, the researchers were able to estimate the amount of energy that could be produced through renewable energy in the future, and how reliable those sources of power would be.

The biggest concern facing renewable energy as a viable power source is its dependability, but Jacobson’s models saw no blackouts for all five years the researchers included in their study.

On top of that, the cost of implementing Jacobson’s methods would be relatively low and extremely cost-effective, the price of which was one quarter the cost of a business as usual scenario.

 “One of the biggest challenges facing energy systems based entirely on clean, zero-emission wind, water, and solar power is to match supply and demand with near-perfect reliability at reasonable cost,” said Mark Delucchi, co-author of the paper and a research scientist at the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a>. “Our work shows that this can be accomplished, in almost all countries of the world, with established technologies.”

The results may seem too good to be true, but the researchers note that it will take cooperation on behalf of multiple national leaders and a coordinated effort to decide where renewable operations will be located. 

Despite its geopolitical complications, Jacobson’s work shows that large-scale switch to dependable renewable energy is possible in many countries around the world.

January heat waves across New Zealand broke temperature records and even caused a shortage of fans in the country.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-zealand-fault-line/">New Zealand</a> residents were encouraged to stay indoors and out of the heat, but many places are not equipped with air conditioning, causing problems for schools and businesses. 

“We have no fans left, and air conditioning is much less prevalent than in many other countries,” Ben Noll, a meteorologist form the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/30/new-zealand-heatwave-health-alerts-scramble-fans">The Guardian</a>.

Noll also explained that warm sea temperatures were contributing to much of the heat wave that took hold at the end of January. 

February has brought cooler temperatures thanks to a tropical storm and heavy rainfall, but climate experts have now confirmed that January was the hottest month on record for New Zealand.

January temperatures skyrocketed to over 90 degrees Fahrenheit and according to NIWA, temperatures averaged around 68.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which is more than three degrees above normal. 

Climate change is a major factor in the rising temperatures for New Zealand, and climatologists warn of the risk of sea level rise, drought, and disease that an increase in temperatures could cause. 

Severe weather events are happening with more and more frequency around the world. January may have been the hottest year on record for New Zealand, but parts of North America experienced brutal cold snaps and <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2017/12/26/us/erie-pennsylvania-snow-storm/index.html">record snowfall</a> during the month. 

Even though temperatures have cooled in New Zealand, Gregory Macara, a climate scientists with the weather agency, told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/02/january-hottest-month-ever-recorded-new-zealand">The Guardian</a> that February will still be hotter than average.

Over 15 million gallons of mercury is trapped in permafrost in the northern regions of the Earth, according to a new study. 

At the current rates of climate change, warming temperatures will melt Arctic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-thawing-permafrost/">permafrost</a> and mercury will slowly be released into the world's oceans and atmospheres with potentially deadly consequences. 

Researchers from the <a href="http://co-labs.org/labs?id=15">US Geological Survey in Boulder, Colorado</a> collected permafrost core samples in Alaska to assess exactly how much mercury was held in the Arctic ice.

“Twenty-four percent of all the soil above the equator is permafrost, and it has this huge pool of locked-up mercury,” said Paul Schuster, co-author of the study. “The consequences of this mercury being released into the environment are potentially huge because mercury has health effects on organisms and can travel up the food chain, adversely affecting native and other communities.”

Mercury is toxic to humans and can cause kidney and lung failure, among other health issues. 

For the study, the researchers collected 13 soil cores from different areas in Alaska between 2004 and 2012. The cores were then analyzed, and the research team measured how much carbon and mercury was within each core. 

These measurements were then used to calculate mercury levels in all permafrost north of the equator since the last Ice Age. According to the team’s estimations, there are more than 15 million gallons of mercury trapped within northern permafrost soil. 

The northern regions of the globe contain the world's largest reserve of mercury in both frozen and unfrozen soil. 

According to a recent report released by the <a href="http://www.noaa.gov/">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a> (NOAA), thawing of permafrost is happening faster than ever before, and the warming trend doesn’t show signs of slowing down. 

There have been concerns about the carbon contained in ice and soil that could potentially be released and further drive climate change, but now this new study shows that mercury levels also need to be factored into permafrost thaw research. 

“This study is very novel and makes a big discovery in an area that was previously somewhat ignored,” James Shanley, a member of the research team. “'It shows permafrost represents a huge source of mercury, and if it thaws due to climate change, the mercury could be released and could significantly add to the global mercury burden.”

A collection of studies has revealed that the subject of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-risk-death/">air pollution</a> has a negative impact on people's conduct. The findings indicate that exposure to pollution, or even just the thought of it, may lead to unethical behavior such as crime and cheating. 

“This research reveals that air pollution may have potential ethical costs that go beyond its well-known toll on health and the environment,” said first author Jackson G. Lu. 

“This is important because air pollution is a serious global issue that affects billions of people - even in the United States, about 142 million people still reside in counties with dangerously polluted air.”

The findings of the analysis suggest that this association between pollution and misconduct could be caused by increased anxiety. Researchers have previously found that air pollution elevates feelings of anxiety, which is known to correspond with various unethical behaviors.

The research team analyzed air pollution and crime data for over 9,000 cities in the United States over a 9-year time frame. Pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency included information about six major pollutants such as carbon dioxide and fine particulate matter. Crime data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) contained information on seven major offenses including murder and robbery.

The study revealed that cities with higher air pollution levels were more likely to have higher rates of crime. Researchers also developed a series of experiments to further establish this correlation in which they manipulated participants to imagine air pollution.

The results of the first experiment showed that participants who were shown images of a polluted area cheated more often on an assigned task than those who were presented with an image of a clean area.

Participants were also shown images of either a polluted or a clean scene in another experiment, and were instructed to write an essay about what it would be like to live there. 

Independent experts rated the essays to measure how much anxiety was expressed, and they detected higher levels of anxiety in the individuals who had written about living in a polluted area.

The study authors acknowledged that anxiety may not be the only mechanism linking air pollution and unethical behavior. 

“Our findings suggest that air pollution not only corrupts people's health, but also can contaminate their morality,” said Lu.

The study is published in <a href="http://journals.sagepub.com/home/pss">Psychological Science</a>, a journal of the <a href="https://www.psychologicalscience.org/">Association for Psychological Science</a>.

<a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a>, graduate student Jeffrey Benca exposed 18-inch-tall pine trees to a level of ultraviolet radiation similar to what would have followed the massive volcano eruptions that occurred at the end of the Permian Period. 

Over the course of two months, all of the pine cones shriveled up within days of emerging and the trees became sterile. After the trees were moved outside, they were able to bounce back years later and produce healthy pine cones.

Scientists believe periodic volcanic eruptions that continued for over a million years and the subsequent ozone depletion could have been the driving force behind the Permian-Triassic extinction, but exactly how the event unfolded remains a mystery. While there would have been acid rain on a local level, this alone could not have wiped out nearly 70 percent of all land animals and 95 percent of the planet's marine life.

“During the end-Permian crisis, the forests may have disappeared in part or fully because of increased UV exposure,” said Benca. “With pulses of volcanic eruptions happening, we would expect pulsed ozone shield weakening, which may have led to forest declines previously observed in the fossil record.”

Benca explained that, even though the plants survived, the massive levels of radiation would have had a damaging effect on plant growth and reproduction. This could have destabilized the base of the food web, which would  have a devastating impact on animals.

“Paleontologists have come up with various kill scenarios for mass extinctions, but plant life may not be affected by dying suddenly as much as through interrupting one part of the life cycle, such as reproduction, over a long period of time, causing the population to dwindle and potentially disappear,” said study co-author Cindy Looy.

Co-author Ivo Duijnstee said that Benca’s theory of what happened during the end of the Permian Period is a great illustration of how extinction unfolds slowly, over tens or hundreds of thousands of years. 

“Global biodiversity catastrophes are not about death but about the pruning of evolutionary branches on the tree of life at a rate much higher than the sprouting of new shoots,” said Duijnstee.

The findings of the study suggest that caution must be taken when introducing new industrial chemicals that could be harmful to the ozone.

The study is published in the online journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/">University of York</a> have investigated the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-climate-change-species/">climate change</a> on the land of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, and found that these effects happen more rapidly than previously realized.

The research team looked at environmental changes surrounding the African savannah and wetlands over the last 5,000 years. The experts discovered that this dynamic ecosystem had constantly transformed itself to adapt to shifting climate conditions.

The most notable changes have occurred over the last 500 years, which dates back to the arrival of the Maasai people and the start of the ivory trade. The sediment contained evidence that the Maasai people used fire to help cultivate the landscape, which altered the composition of the vegetation for a short time.


“East African savannahs support large human and animal populations, but are undergoing rapid developments and pressures on water resources,” said study co-author Esther Githumbi. 

“Changes are leading to reductions in wildlife habitats and biodiversity loss, so it is important to understand how various environmental factors have interacted in the past, particularly human influences, to get a realistic idea of what the future might look like.”


The vegetation, which consisted of sparse woodlands and shrubs 5,000 years ago, showed high variability in response to climate change and the expansion of the wetlands. Vegetation had also changed in response to the size of the herbivore animal population.

“You have to see all of these different climate, animal, and human interactions in one dataset in order to get a realistic sense of how each impacts on the other,” said co-author Robert Marchant. “By far the biggest impact to the landscape, both in the past and today, is human activity.

The study suggests that National Park boundaries may need stricter management to keep pace with the changing climate.

“Now that we know how rapidly these changes occurred in the history of this area we can better predict the future,” said Githumbi. “Our project is just one of many around the world looking at land-based climate changes.”

“Once we have full datasets from these countries, the aim is to combine the results to get a global picture of what is happening on land. For the savannahs of East Africa this could mean considering how decisions are made about boundary lines around protected lands, given that the ecosystems can change more quickly than previously thought.”

African savannahs quickly changing in response to climate change

Roughly 307 million years ago, the Earth’s climate underwent a drastic transformation that wiped out many species, but some tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) thrived. 

Now, a new study conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/">University of Birmingham</a> discovered how this ancient climate change reshaped the future and shows how the conditions were favorable to the evolution of tetrapods. 

The Carboniferous period, which started around 359 million years ago, was a time when North America and Europe were connected and covered with dense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/10-largest-rainforests/">tropical rainforests</a>. The humid climate provided the perfect environment for tetrapods to thrive and diversify. 

However towards the end of the Carboniferous period the climate changed, and became much drier, the rainforests began to disappear, and the many species, including dominant plant groups, went extinct. 

While scientists were aware of how the change in climate affected different species and caused a mass extinction event, there is not much known about tetrapods, which prompted the new study.

The research was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B and fills in important gaps in the fossil record that shows the diversity of tetrapods both before and after the change in climate. 

For the study, the researchers compiled a new dataset from the Paleobiology Database and used advanced statistical methods to estimate tetrapods’ diversity. 

Not surprisingly, the results show that tetrapod diversity decreased after the shift to a drier climate. The rainforests began to disappear, and this led to habitat degradation for many tetrapods that had thrived in the humid and wet environments.

The researchers found that even though diversity decreased, the drier climate gave rise to some tetrapod migrations whose larger size made it easier for them navigate further away from the equator to find more hospitable habitats. 

“We now know that the rainforest collapse was crucial in paving the way for amniotes, the group which ultimately gave rise to modern mammals, reptiles and birds, to become the dominant group of land vertebrates during the Permian period and beyond,” said Emma Dunne, the lead author of the study in an interview with <a href="https://phys.org/news/2018-02-rainforest-collapse-million-years-impacted.html">Phys.org</a>. 

The study explains how some species were able to thrive even in the midst of a mass extinction that decreased tetrapod diversity.

A new regulation created by the <a href="https://www.imo.org/">International Maritime Organization</a> requires that all marine fuels contain 80 to 86 percent less sulfur by 2020. 

The regulation was created in response to global health concerns about the pollution emitted from marine shipping operations. Sulfur particles, in particular, can cause many respiratory diseases and asthma in children. 

Air pollution from ships have the largest impact in coastal cities next to popular shipping routes, and almost 14 million cases of childhood asthma reported each year are linked to shipping fuels. 

Sulfur particles and pollutants from shipping also contribute to early deaths from lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.

A new study examining the possible effects of reducing sulfur emissions from marine shipping found that cleaner fuel would reduce childhood asthma by 3.6 percent worldwide. 

However, the study also found that sulfur particles offset somewhat the effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-5-years/">global warming</a>, and cleaner fuel could increase the impact of climate change. 

The study was conducted by an international team researchers from the <a href="http://www.udel.edu/">University of Delaware</a>, the<a href="http://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/"> Finnish Meteorological Institute</a> (FMI), the <a href="https://www.rit.edu/">Rochester Institute of Technology</a> (RIT) in New York, and <a href="http://www.energyandenvironmental.com/">Energy and Environmental Research Associates. </a>

The researchers used satellite records to create a state-of-the-art models of global ship traffic. The model showed where emissions from shipping fuels were at their highest and what shipping lanes and emissions would be like in the coming years. 

Another model mapping emission disbursement highlighted those residential and city areas with the most exposure to sulfur and pollution from ships. 

The results show that while the new regulation will decrease sulfur particle emissions and decrease the risk of childhood asthma, it comes with several costs. 

The cleaner fuel adoptions will increase prices on goods for consumers and could detrimentally impact climate change. 

Sulfur particles, while damaging to health, also reflect sunlight and help diminish the warming from carbon emissions.

“The use of cleaner ship fuels will increase the rate of global warming by about 3 percent,” said Mikhail Sofiev, who led the climate-related research. “This means more attention may be needed to reduce greenhouse gases across all sectors of the global economy.”

Shipping traffic is also expected to increase, and with it, pollution from marine shipping fuels which will continue to adversely impact health. 

The study shows that even though a reduction in sulfur particles will have positive benefits on respiratory and cardiovascular health, other more stringent measures should be implemented in order to have a greater impact and still combat climate change, 

“Our results show that these regulations are beneficial, but also that more air pollution health benefits remain possible with less-polluting ships,” said James Winebrake, an authority on the environmental impacts of transportation, including health risk assessments.

New clean shipping fuel regulations come at a cost

A new regulation created by the International Maritime Organization requires...

In the first study of its kind, an international team of scientists has estimated the number of viruses circulating between the surface of the Earth and the atmosphere. They found that billions of viruses and millions of bacteria are falling back onto our planet daily.

Viruses and bacteria are carried by sea spray and soil dust up into the free troposphere, which is just below the stratosphere. These microorganisms can travel thousands of miles through the troposphere before being re-deposited onto the planet through dust storms and precipitation.

The team gathered samples from sites at high altitudes in the Sierra mountains to track the flow of viruses and bacteria to and from the Earth. The study revealed that over 800 million viruses per square meter are swept up above the planetary boundary layer on a daily basis.

The researchers also found that billions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-virus-present-humans/">viruses</a> per square meter return to the planet every day, along with millions of bacteria.

Curtis Suttle is a virologist at the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/">University of British Columbia</a> and the study's senior author.

“Roughly 20 years ago we began finding genetically similar viruses occurring in very different environments around the globe,” said Suttle.”This preponderance of long-residence viruses traveling the atmosphere likely explains why it’s quite conceivable to have a virus swept up into the atmosphere on one continent and deposited on another.”

Despite how disturbing the findings of the study may seem, the researchers explained that this movement of organisms between the atmosphere and the planet is most likely a good thing.

“Rather than being a negative consequence, this deposition provides a seed bank that should allow ecosystems to rapidly adapt to environmental changes,” wrote the study authors.

The research is published in the <a href="http://www.nature.com/ismej">International Society for Microbial Ecology Journal</a>.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

During 2020, average global temperatures matched the hottest year on record. The hurricane season was also record-breaking, with many of the storms intensifying at extraordinary speeds. According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Mysterious "spoke season" captured on Saturn

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

In the 20th century, chemical companies developed thousands of herbicides. The most commonly used herbicide was glyphosate, which was introduced in 1974.



Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Weeds are becoming increasingly resistant to herbicides

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.
