Far beneath our feet, beyond the Earth's rocky mantle and molten outer core, lies a dense, solid sphere of iron and other elements like carbon. 



This inner core is Earth’s deepest secret, shaping the magnetic field that shields our planet. Yet, scientists still puzzle over how it first formed and what ingredients allowed it to crystallize.



A new study by researchers from the University of Leeds, University of Oxford, and <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University College London</a> provides fresh insight. 



Their findings reveal that carbon may have been the key element that enabled the inner core to solidify billions of years ago.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-earth-s-core-composition-matters">Why Earth's core composition matters</h2>



The makeup of Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-inner-core-proven-to-be-rapidly-changing-and-now-rotating-backwards/">core</a> determines not only its density but also its thermal and magnetic behavior. 



Seismology shows that the core is less dense than pure iron, meaning lighter elements must be present. Candidates like silicon, sulphur, oxygen, and carbon have all been considered.



The latest simulations show that carbon, in particular, may have been essential. Without it, the inner core’s crystallization would have required impossible conditions, making its very existence a mystery.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-supercooling-paradox">The supercooling paradox</h2>



Liquids rarely freeze solid the instant they cool past their <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/melting-point" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">melting point</a>. Instead, they must be supercooled, chilled further before crystals can form. 



For molten iron alone, estimates suggested that a massive 800 to 1000 °C (1472 to 1832 °F) of supercooling would be needed.



If that had occurred, the consequences for our planet would have been dramatic. 



The inner core would have grown far too quickly, disrupting the delicate balance of heat flow inside <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-inner-core-is-not-solid-it-is-shape-shifting-time-for-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/">Earth</a> and destabilizing the magnetic field that protects life from harmful solar and cosmic radiation.



Scientists know this did not happen. Geophysical evidence points instead to a modest level of supercooling, limited to about 250 °C (482 °F). 



That small difference between theoretical predictions and observational reality has puzzled researchers for decades.



This contradiction, known as the inner core nucleation paradox, continues to inspire debate, experiments, and advanced simulations aimed at uncovering the true chemistry of Earth’s deepest layers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-simulating-the-impossible">Simulating the impossible</h2>



To resolve the paradox, the research team ran atomic-scale simulations of iron mixed with different light elements. 



They tested silicon, sulfur, oxygen, and carbon, and watched how each affected the first step of freezing: nucleation.



“Each of these elements exists in the overlying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-an-ocean-of-fire-shaped-early-earths-core-according-to-a-new-study/">mantle</a> and could therefore have been dissolved into the core during Earth’s history,” explained co-author Associate Professor Andrew Walker from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>.



“As a result, these could explain why we have a solid inner core with relatively little supercooling at this depth. The presence of one or more of these elements could also rationalize why the core is less dense than pure iron, a key observation from seismology.”

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-drives-earth-s-core-freezing">Carbon drives Earth's core freezing</h2>



The simulations revealed that silicon and sulfur actually hindered freezing, which would have increased the supercooling requirement. Carbon, however, had the opposite effect.



With 2.4 % carbon, the required supercooling dropped to about 420 °C (788 °F). Still too high, but much closer to reality. 



Extrapolating further, a carbon content of 3.8 % reduced the figure to 266 °C (511 °F), which is consistent with geological evidence.



This makes carbon the only element so far shown to both enable nucleation and align with seismic observations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-seeds-needed">No seeds needed</h2>



Unlike hail forming around dust in clouds, Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-how-gold-reaches-earths-surface-from-the-mantle/">core</a> appears to have frozen without “nucleation seeds.” 



Tests of possible seed materials, like oxides or metals, show they would melt or dissolve before reaching the center. That leaves chemistry itself, specifically the presence of carbon, as the driver of solidification.



“It is exciting to see how atomic scale processes control the fundamental structure and dynamics of our planet," said lead author Dr. Alfred Wilson from the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a>. 



"By studying how Earth’s inner core formed, we are not just learning about our planet’s past. We’re getting a rare glimpse into the chemistry of a region we can never hope to reach directly and learning about how it could change in the future.”

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-s-role-in-earth-s-core">Carbon's role in Earth’s core</h2>



The research also helps refine estimates of when the inner core formed. Some argue it began crystallizing over two billion years ago, while others suggest it happened less than half a billion years ago. 



By identifying carbon as the critical player, scientists can narrow down these timelines. 



This enables a better understanding of how Earth’s deep engine has evolved to influence the magnetic field, surface conditions, and even the long-term habitability of our planet.



The message is clear: carbon is more than a surface element of life. It may also be the hidden architect of Earth’s inner heart, shaping its stability across geological time.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-62841-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Communications</a>.

Scientists have changed their minds again about the composition of Earth's core

Could Fido’s coat color play a role in his health? In the case of chocolate Labs, a new study shows that it might. 

Researchers at the <a href="https://sydney.edu.au/">University of Sydney</a> have analyzed vet records for 33,000 Labrador retrievers of all colors. They found that chocolate Labs have higher rates of ear and skin infections than black and yellow Labs do. 

They also found that chocolate Labs’ lifespans are, on average, 10 percent shorter than their non-chocolate counterparts. Lead author Dr. Paul McGreevy said the researchers were surprised by the findings.

"The relationships between coat color and disease may reflect an inadvertent consequence of breeding certain pigmentations," he said. "Because chocolate color is recessive in dogs, the gene for this color must be present in both parents for their puppies to be chocolate. Breeders targeting this color may therefore be more likely to breed only Labradors carrying the chocolate coat gene. It may be that the resulting reduced gene pool includes a higher proportion of genes conducive to ear and skin conditions."

They found that across the UK, the most common health conditions among chocolate Labs were obesity, ear infections and joint problems. Male dogs who had been neutered were more prone to obesity than other Labs.

"We found that 8.8 percent of UK Labradors are overweight or obese, one of the highest percentages among dog breeds in the VetCompass database," McGreevy said.

The researchers collected their data through the VetCompass Programme, which began in 2007 at the <a href="https://www.rvc.ac.uk/">Royal Veterinary College</a> in London in partnership with the University of Sydney. 

The program is now working to collect data on chocolate Labs and their black and yellow fellows in Australia. VetCompass now works with all of Australia's veterinary schools with support from the <a href="https://www.arc.gov.au/">Australian Research Council</a>.

The study has been published in the open source journal <a href="https://cgejournal.biomedcentral.com/">Canine Genetics and Epidemiology</a>.

Scientists finally have solid evidence: the Earth’s core is solid, if a little squishy, a new study has discovered.

The theory that Earth’s core is solid dates back to 1936, proposed by seismologist Inge Lehmann as she reanalyzed data from the massive 1929 Murchison, New Zealand earthquake. But until recently, there was no way to prove it. 

Then the team from <a href="http://www.anu.edu.au/">Australia National University</a> struck on the idea of using earthquakes again. They decided to study echoes of earthquakes using a technique that researchers have been using to measure Antarctic ice sheets for decades.

Dr. Hrvoje Tkalčić, scholar Than-Son Phạm and their colleagues looked at similarities recorded by pairs of receivers after major earthquakes. The team detected “J waves,” which can only pass through solid objects, deep in the Earth’s core. 

“Using a global network of stations, we take every single receiver pair and every single large earthquake – that’s many combinations – and we measure the similarity between the seismograms,” Tkalčić told the magazine <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/">Newsweek</a>. “That’s called cross-correlation, or the measure of similarity. From those similarities we construct a global correlogram – a sort of fingerprint of the Earth.”

What that fingerprint showed was that there is solid material in the Earth’s core. However, it’s also a lot softer than scientists expected. 

“It turns out – if our results are correct – the inner core shares some similar elastic properties with gold and platinum,” Tkalčić said. “The inner core is like a time capsule; if we understand it we’ll understand how the planet was formed, and how it evolves.”

The study solves one of the mysteries about Earth’s core, Tkalčić and Pham said, but there is still research to be done before scientists come close to understanding the center of our planet.

“For instance, we don’t know yet what the exact temperature of the inner core is, what the age of the inner core is, or how quickly it solidifies, but with these new advances in global seismology, we are slowly getting there,” Tkalčić said.

The study has been published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Carrot extract could be the key to creating environmentally friendly cement, according to a new study by British researchers.

The team at <a href="http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/">Lancaster University</a> used a surprisingly low-tech method to test their theory that carrot extract could make cement stronger while cutting carbon dioxide emissions: a common household blender.

The scientists blended nano platelets extracted from carrots and ordinary cement to create a crack-resistant material up to 80 percent stronger than traditional cement.

“The composites are not only superior to current cement products in terms of mechanical and microstructure properties, but also use smaller amounts of cement,” Dr. Mohamed Saai told the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">Daily Mail</a>. “This significantly reduces both the energy consumption and [carbon dioxide] emissions associated with cement manufacturing.”

The key is in the cellulose.

The fibrous material is what makes carrots so rigid and crunchy, even though the root vegetables are mostly water, Christian Kemp-Griffin, CEO of Scotland-based CelluComp, the company that provided the carrot extract.

“Those fibers have strength characteristics in them. It’s the building blocks of the strength of a vegetable,” he told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/">Reuters</a>.

It can be extracted from other plant material, but vegetables are easiest, Kemp-Griffin said. 

Adding the carrot extract saved about 88 pounds of cement per cubic square meter of concrete, and about the same amount in carbon dioxide emissions, the Lancaster researchers discovered during proof-of-concept studies.

“Our preliminary results show that adding about half a kilogram of carrot nanomaterial will reduce about 10 kilograms of cement per one cubic meter of concrete,” Saafi told the Mail.

The news could be big for the construction industry, not just because the resulting material seems stronger and less likely to crack. According to the <a href="https://www.iea.org/">International Energy Agency</a>, cement produces about seven percent of global carbon dioxide emissions.

Carrot extract isn’t the only solution, either. The British researchers are also experimenting with cellulose extracted from sugar beets.

The Pacific blob is back, and that could spell bad news for the west coasts of the United States and Canada.

That’s because in the past, the blob of warm ocean water has brought with it poor feeding for salmon. It’s been connected to whale deaths and warmer temperatures in western North America. 

It’s also been connected to a phenomenon California meteorologists dubbed the <a href="https://weatherwest.com/archives/tag/ridiculously-resilient-ridge">Ridiculously Resilient Ridge</a>, believed to have played a large role in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/california-drought-changing-landscape/">drought that plagued the state</a> from 2011 to 2016.

Now, Alaska and northwestern Canada are seeing the “son of the Pacific blob,” Armel Castellan of <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change.html">Environment and Climate Change Canada</a> said. 

"To see a blob sort of establish itself at this time of year is sort of surprising," Castellan told <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news">CBC News</a>. "It's a symptom of the enduring or stagnant weather we've been having over the last four years."

Alaska is already seeing unseasonably warm temperatures, and northern British Columbia is still experiencing summer-like weather. Alaska just ended one of its warmest Septembers in 94 years, according to the <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/event-tracker/alaska's-2018-early-fall-extremes">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a>. Parts of southern Italy are experiencing a drought.

The Pacific blob of warm water creates a high-pressure period, which changes the direction of the Pacific Jet Stream. That causes warmer weather, and in the case of California’s Ridiculously Resilient Ridge, prevented normal winter storms from making landfall where they’re most needed.

Right now, if the Pacific blob fails to dissipate, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, Montana, northern Wyoming and western North Dakota could see warmer-than-usual temperatures into the winter. 

A side effect of the Pacific blob seems to be colder and wetter than usual weather in the U.S. Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic states.

Phenomena like the Pacific blob are becoming more common, meteorologists say.

"It's definitely something we're starting to see with these resilient ridges," Castellan said. "It just begs the question of how much of this is linked to climate change."

Pacific blob returns, bringing warm days and fear of drought

The Pacific blob is back, and that could spell bad...

How can we know how long we’re going to <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/life-expectancy-2040/">live</a>? The true answer is that we can’t, but new research from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/">University of Edinburgh</a> may help give some people a better idea of their projected lifespan.

In recent research presented at the <a href="http://www.ashg.org/">American Society of Human Genetics</a> annual meeting, scientists detail how they devised a way to estimate whether an individual can expect to live longer or shorter on average. Their approach came from studying the effect of genetic variations on lifespan across the human genome.

Through the largest ever genome-wide association study of lifespan, the researchers combined genetic data from more than 500,000 participants in the UK Biobank and other cohorts with data on the lifespan of participant’s parents. The effects of just a single gene on lifespan are tiny, so this larger sample size was needed to identify the genes relevant to our lifespan. This sample helped researchers validate six previously identified associations between specific genes and aging – such as the APOE gene, which has been linked to risk of neurodegenerative disease. 

Additionally, the research team found 21 new genomic regions that have an influence on the human lifespan. They then used their results to create a polygenic risk score for lifespan, which is a personalized genomic score that estimates an individual’s genetic likelihood of a longer life.

“Using a person’s genetic information alone, we can identify the 10 percent of people with the most protective genes, who will live an average of five years longer than the least protected 10 percent,” explains Paul Timmers, a graduate student at the University of Edinburgh.

The study also dove deeper into the specifics of the effects of genetic variants on the aging process, as the researchers wanted to determine whether certain variants were affecting aging directly or influencing the risk of individual diseases that could lead to death. They discovered that among common variants, the genes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and smoking-related conditions were linked to overall lifespan. Interestingly, they did not find lifespan associations for other cancers, which may suggest that the risk of death due to other cancers is a result of rarer genetic variants or the environment.

“This was an interesting result,” says Timmers. “We suspect that the variants we found, such as for smoking and Alzheimer’s disease, pertain uniquely to the modern period of human history. For example, a genetic propensity to smoke wasn’t harmful before we discovered tobacco, but it is now. Since natural selection has not yet had many generations to act on these variants, the variants are still fairly common.”

Moving forward, the researchers plan to study how the variants and functional pathways they identified affect lifespan.

New lifespan “score” can help predict how long you might live

The oldest known fossils on Earth may actually be nothing more than just some regular rocks, according to a new study by <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a> astrobiologist Abigail Allwood. 

The structures, which were discovered by a team of Australian scientists in Greenland two years ago, were thought to date back 3.7 billion years. The results of that study suggested that scientists had underestimated how quickly and easily life on Earth had formed.

In the current investigation, however, advanced NASA technology used by Allwood indicated that the material found in Greenland is more rock than <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/fossils-modern-birds-dinosaurs/">fossil</a>.

Allwood was responsible for finding the previously oldest fossil, which is nearly 3.5 billion years old. After the 2016 study emerged, she went to Greenland to investigate.

Allwood determined that the shapes, weathering and the interior layers of the structures did not fit the characteristics of ancient fossils, known as stromatolites. She mapped the composition of the fossils in question, and concluded that they do not have the chemical signature of fossilized life.

According to the <a href="https://www.ap.org/en-us/">Associated Press</a>, several experts agree with Allwood that the fossils were dated incorrectly by Allen Nutman and colleagues at the University of Wollongong in Australia.

Despite the new findings, the Australian scientists maintain that the odd structures are partially made up of material from microbes that lived on an ancient seafloor. They argue that Allwood took samples from the far end of one of two sites and did not test the original specimens that were offered for analysis.

“This is a classic comparing apples and oranges scenario, leading to the inevitable outcome that ours and their observations do not exactly match,” the Australian researchers said in a statement.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Cancer is a ticking time bomb in our bodies. If there were an equation for cancer it would mainly consist of mutations + time = cancer. And it’s no secret that if we live long enough, we’ll likely experience some form of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-mouth-cancer/">cancer</a> ourselves. 

A recent study published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a> has found that by the time we reach middle age, over half the esophagus in healthy people has been taken over by cells containing mutations in cancer genes. The report details how mutant cells mutate and compete with each other over time – with only the fittest mutations surviving.

Scientists at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, MRC Cancer Unit, <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> along with collaborators have uncovered for the first time evidence that healthy cells in the esophagus carry at least several hundred mutations per cell on average in people in their twenties. These mutations only increase as we age, and rise to over 2,000 mutations per cell later in life. 

However, it’s important to note that only mutations in a dozen or so genes really matter when it comes to cancer, as these mutations give the cells a competitive advantage and allow them to take over the tissue, forming a dense patchwork of mutations.

The researchers made this discovery through studying normal esophageal tissue. 

“Under the microscope, the esophageal tissue looked completely normal – it came from healthy individuals who had no signs of cancer,” explains lead author Phil Jones, a professor at the University of Cambridge. “After studying the genetics we were shocked to see that the healthy esophagus was riddled with mutations. We discovered that by the time an individual reaches middle age, they probably have more mutant than normal cells.”

Using targeted and whole-genome sequencing to map groups of mutant cells in esophageal tissue, scientists found that these mutations ran rampant even in individuals with no history of esophageal cancer or any related problems.

Additionally, this research has brought new understanding to the mutations that are found in the squamous form of esophageal cancers. Mutations in the NOTCH1 gene – known to control cell division – were found in almost half of all cells in the normal esophagus by middle age. But a mutated gene known to be found in almost all esophageal cancers – TP53 – was only found to be mutated in 5 to 10 percent of normal cells. These findings suggest that researchers may need to reevaluate the role of some genes believed to be responsible for cancer, as it’s possible that the NOTCH1 mutation could possibly protect cells against cancer development, rather than being responsible for it.

“We have found that genetic mutations associated with cancer are widespread in normal tissues, revealing how our own cells mutate, compete and evolve to colonize our tissues as we age,” says Dr. Inigo Martincorena, joint lead author from the <a href="https://www.sanger.ac.uk/">Wellcome Sanger Institute</a>. “Given the importance of these mutations to cancer, it is remarkable that we have been unaware of the extent of this phenomenon until now. While the work sheds light on early cancer development, it also raises many questions about how these mutations may contribute to ageing and other diseases, opening interesting avenues for future research.”

The holidays are coming up, and it’s more likely than not that you’ll soon be standing over a table full of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/fast-food-restaurants-unhealthy-options/">food</a>, brain firing with anticipation and building the perfect plate in your mind before you dig in. In these situations, we have to make quick decisions about which dishes to try and how much of each to take. While you may think these decisions are made mainly by your stomach, neuroscientists at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have now found the region of your brain that is strongly linked to food preference decisions.

The research team wanted to find out how the brain determines what to eat and how much of it to eat when an individual has several good food options. Even if there are similar foods available that we desire somewhat equally, the favorite dish will likely be eaten faster and with bigger bites.

In their study, the scientists gave rats two similar sugary drinks. The rats preferred the drink made with sucrose over the one made with maltodextrin – so that when they receive sucrose, they’d lick it up faster. Over the course of multiple days, the rats were given either one drink or the other while the researchers mapped their brain activity at the exact moment the animals realized which drink they received. Thus, the neuroscientists could pinpoint the neurons that registered excitement for sucrose, and the disappointment for maltodextrin.

“We found a region in the brain that reflects our perception of food in a strikingly dominant way,” says lead author David Ottenheimer, a Johns Hopkins University graduate student studying neuroscience. “The level of brain activity we saw exceeded our expectations by far.” The neurons that were activated are in a region called the ventral pallidum, an area that has long been associated with reward and pleasure perception – but always considered to be in more of a secondary role.

The researchers then presented the rats with a different set of options – either the maltodextrin drink or plain water. They found that when the rats got maltodextrin, these neurons fired like they had for sucrose. These results indicate that the brain area is making context-dependent decisions, responding to the best food option at any given time.

“Because the signaling by ventral pallidum neurons changes immediately when the rat changes his ranking of which flavor is his favorite, we see this response as providing a real-time readout of what you like best from currently available options,” says senior author <a href="https://pbs.jhu.edu/directory/patricia-janak/">Patricia Janak</a>, a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Neuroscience.

Although more research is needed to figure out what the signaling in this region of the brain really means, the team believes their study could be key to developing therapies and treatments that encourage healthy eating. “Our data suggest that further investigation of ventral pallidum will be critical for understanding how we make decisions about eating,” says Ottenheimer. “If we want to figure out why a food can be exciting in one scenario and disappointing in another, ventral pallidum could be the key.”

A new study has found that the herpes virus has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, and that people with severe herpes benefit from taking antiviral drugs as they decrease the risk of developing dementia. 

A new paper by Ruth Itzhaki, a professor at the <a href="http://www.manchester.ac.uk/">University of Manchester</a>, was published in the journal <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnagi.2018.00324/ful">Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience </a>and reviews 25 years of research examining the link between herpes and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/exercise-benefits-alzheimers/">Alzheimer’s</a>. 

Itzhaki is a leading expert on Alzheimer’s and it’s connection to HSV1, the Herpes Simplex Virus 1. 

Herpes viruses remain in a person’s immune cells, and neurons for the entirety of their life and flare-ups or reactivation of the virus can happen when stress or illness puts a strain on the body’s immune system. 

It’s been theorized and extensively studied that because HSV1 infects neurons, during reactivation, the infected neurons cause mental deterioration. 

“Viral DNA is located very specifically within plaques in postmortem brain tissue from Alzheimer's sufferers,” said Itzhaki. “The main proteins of both plaques and tangles accumulate also in HSV1-infected cell cultures - and antiviral drugs can prevent this.”

Carriers of the gene variant APOE-ε4 are particularly at risk of developing Alzheimer's later on in life. 

“HSV1 could account for 50% or more of Alzheimer's disease cases,” said Itzhaki, “Our theory is that in APOE-ε4 carriers, reactivation is more frequent or more harmful in HSV1-infected brain cells, which as a result accumulate damage that culminates in development of Alzheimer's.” 

To prove this, Itzhaki analyzed data from <a href="https://nhird.nhri.org.tw/en/">Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database</a>. 

The database is appealing to researchers like Itzhaki because 99.9 percent of Taiwan’s population is enrolled in it and there is a lot to be learned about microbial infections and diseases from such a large sample. 

Three studies were published in 2017 and 2018 using the National Health Insurance Research Database to investigate the development of senile dementia and the success of treatments administered to patients with obvious signs of HSV1 infection. 

“The striking results include evidence that the risk of senile dementia is much greater in those who are infected with HSV, and that anti-herpes antiviral treatment causes a dramatic decrease in number of those subjects severely affected by HSV1 who later develop dementia,” said Itzhaki.

Itzhaki notes that the results only apply to patients with severe HSV1 infections but that over 150 publications provide evidence to support the theory that HSV1 influences Alzheimer's.

Kisspeptin, a hormone responsible for regulating reproduction, has a much stronger influence on regulating mood and brain activity than previously realized. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/">Imperial College London</a> studied kisspeptin and its effect on brain activity during the brain’s resting state, something that had never been done before. 

“Although we have previously investigated how this hormone affects the brain when it is in an active state, this is the first time we've demonstrated it also affects the brain in its baseline, resting state,” said Waljit Dhillo, the senior author of the study. “These insights suggest the hormone could one day be used to treat conditions such as low sex drive or depression.” 

Think of the resting state like a car in neutral. It’s a period when the brain isn’t concentrating on a task, and studies that delve into the brain’s resting state are providing new insights into the active <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/switch-turns-brain-off-sleep/">brain</a> and psychological disorders. 

Kisspeptins were discovered along with the gene that produces them, KISS1, in 1996. KISS1 and kisspeptin are named after <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals/landia/PIIS2213-8587(13)70098-6.pdf">Hershey’s Kisses</a> because the gene was discovered in Hershey, Pennsylvania. 

Studies have shown that kisspeptin <a href="https://www.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/physiol.00009.2010">is a “master regulator” of reproduction</a> and the researchers wanted to better understand how the hormone influences brain activity. 

According to the researchers, the study could help pave the way for new treatments for problems like low sex drive. 

For the study, 29 men were given a kisspeptin infusion and shown an array of themed images while they were in an MRI scanner. The images were either sexual, negative, or neutral in nature and the researchers monitored brain activity as the participants viewed the images. 

In a second visit, the participants were given a placebo and asked to take part in the same MRI test, but the men didn’t know that they had not been given the hormone. 

The results were published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation Insight, and the researchers found links between the hormone and decreased sexual aversion and increased sexual arousal during resting states. 

“Our findings help unravel the many and complex roles of the naturally-occurring hormone kisspeptin, and how it orchestrates reproductive hormones as well as sexual and emotional function,” said Alexander Comninos, the first author of the study. “Psychosexual problems, such as low sex drive, affect up to one in three people, and can have a devastating effect on a person's, and a couple's, wellbeing. These findings open avenues for kisspeptin as a future treatment for these problems, although there is a lot of work still to be done.”

For many decades, scientists have explored the theory of panspermia, the idea that life itself can be transferred through <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/life-recovered-asteroid-dinosaurs/">asteroids</a> and other space objects. Panspermia depends upon whether the microorganisms and chemicals that are necessary for life could survive being transported from one stellar system to another.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/">Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics</a> (CfA) have recently investigated the possibility of panspermia on a galactic scale. The study revealed that “the entire Milky Way could potentially be exchanging biotic components across vast distances.”

Study lead author Idan Ginsburg told <a href="https://www.universetoday.com/">Universe Today</a>: “We expect most objects to likely be rocky, but in principle they could also be icy (cometary) in nature.”

“Regardless of whether they are rocky or icy, they can be ejected from their host system and travel potentially thousands of light-years away. In particular the center of the galaxy can act as a powerful engine to seed the Milky Way.”

The team constructed a model to estimate how many icy or rocky bodies may reach a new star system, as well as the likelihood that any life contained on them would survive.

“We estimate the capture rate of objects ejected from planetary systems over the entire phase space as well as time,” wrote the study authors. “We further take into account the number of stars that an interstellar object traverses, as well as the scale height and length of the Milky Way's disk.”

The results of the study suggest that life could, in fact, be spread throughout the galaxy that contains our solar system.

“It’s like billiards,” said Ginsburg. “You hit the cue ball and it hits the other balls, and beside just transferring momentum it also spreads life, and then life spreads across the whole table, which is the galaxy.”

The researchers concluded that up to 100 million life-bearing objects with a radius of 200 kilometers could have been captured by planetary systems around the Milky Way. While smaller objects are more likely to survive the journey, microbial content would have less shelter and would be more exposed to the harsh conditions of outer space.

“It’s a very dangerous ride, but you can think of the microbes as tiny astronauts sitting in a natural spacecraft,” said study co-author Abraham Loeb. “I would actually be thrilled to be a microbe sitting in a rock that makes it across the Milky Way.”

After a space body is captured into a new orbit, it would have to smash into a planet to transfer any life that it may be carrying. In the past, many rocks from Mars crashed into the Earth, which has caused some scientists to speculate that life on our planet originated on Mars. According to Loeb, it is even possible, if unlikely, that life on Earth began with interstellar microbes.

The study is being reviewed for publication by the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/mnras">Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society</a>.

An international team of researchers has demonstrated how simple multicellular organisms called Placozoa evolved to form complex nervous systems that transmit signals between different parts of the body. 

The researchers found that Placozoa can coordinate their body shape and movement in the absence of a <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/nervous-system-immune-infection/">nervous system</a> by using a signalling system among small peptides between cells.

Study co-author Gáspár Jékely is a professor at the Living Systems Institute of the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>.

“Each peptide can be used individually as a different signal, but the peptides could also be used sequentially or together in different combinations which allows for very high numbers of unique signals between cells,” explained Professor Jékely. “This explains how Placozoans can coordinate sophisticated behavioral sequences such as feeding.”

Placozoans are the simplest of all animals with just three cell layers. Despite having no true nerve or muscle cells, they manage to glide across surfaces in the ocean. The researchers investigated how these simple organisms can perform complex behavior without a nervous system.

They found that the cells of Placozoa contain a variety of small peptides, made up of amino acids that are secreted from one cell and detected by neighboring cells. This system represents how more complex organisms use neuropeptides for signalling within the nervous system.

“These new findings show that outer appearances can be deceiving, because cells that look the same are actually signalling with different molecules and are very likely to have different functions,” said study co-author Professor Dirk Fasshauer.

The researchers constructed synthetic versions of the Placozoan signalling peptides to examine the role of each peptide in coordinating movement and body shape.

The team discovered that the peptides changed Placozoan behavior within seconds, and that each peptide had a unique effect. The main behavioral changes induced by the peptides included crinkling, turning, flattening, and internal churning - a behavior associated with feeding.

“It might seem strange to use an animal with no neurons or synapses to study nervous system evolution, but although Placozoans are nerveless, you can still find within their cells the basic molecules needed for communication in complex nervous systems,” said study co-author Dr. Frédérique Varoqueaux. “So studying Placozoans can tell us more about the origins of neurons and how they became the body's control system.”

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
