Mammals are not only good at hearing sounds, they are especially tuned to voices. A new cross-species study compared humans, dogs, and pigs and mapped how fast the brain flags a voice, then sorts out whether it belongs to one of our own.



The researchers recorded tiny pulses of brain activity while participants listened to people, dogs, and pigs, plus everyday noises. The animals were awake, relaxed, and unmedicated, and the sessions used gentle scalp sensors, not implants.



A team from <a href="https://www.elte.hu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eötvös Loránd University</a> (ELU) focused on two questions that cut to the heart of social hearing in mammals. 



The first was whether the brain treats vocal sounds as a distinct category, separate from other noises. The second was whether it goes a step further, recognizing and highlighting voices that belong to members of the same species - a process known as conspecific recognition.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-brain-signals-to-sound">Tracking brain signals to sound</h2>



The setup used non-invasive EEG sensors to track the brain’s fast electrical responses to sound. The signal components the team examined are called event-related potentials, and they are well suited for timing how processing unfolds.



Participants heard short clips such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/laughter-makes-the-stress-of-life-feel-less-overwhelming/">laughs</a>, barks, and grunts, alongside non vocal noises like traffic or a closing door. 



The recordings let the researchers compare voice versus non-voice processing, then compare same species voices to all other sounds.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-step-brain-response">Two-step brain response</h2>



In humans and pigs, the brain marked any voice very quickly, within about 0.2 seconds after the sound began. 



Later, after roughly 0.3 seconds and beyond, all three species showed a second step that tagged same species voices as a special category.



“These patterns were very similar despite the large evolutionary distance between the three species, pointing to shared neural mechanisms that likely predate the divergence of their lineages some 90 million years ago,” said Boglárka Morvai, the study's lead author.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dogs-pigs-and-people">Dogs, pigs, and people</h2>



Dogs did not show the early “any voice” signal as clearly as humans and pigs, even though they live closely with people. 



They did show the later step that marked dog sounds as different from other sounds, which matches the idea that same species calls matter most for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-bacteria-influence-our-social-behavior-and-sense-of-fairness/">social behavior.</a>



Pigs showed both steps and did so on a similar time course to people. That pattern strengthens the case that the early voice flag is a general feature of mammal hearing, not a quirk of primates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-voice-areas-in-mammals">Voice areas in mammals</h2>



For two decades, brain imaging in humans has found voice sensitive regions in the superior temporal cortex, often called temporal voice areas. 



A comprehensive review outlines how these regions support recognition of who is speaking, what they feel, and how the voice changes over time.



Dogs have their own voice sensitive patches too, and they align in function with human areas when both species listen to vocal sounds.



 A comparative paper showed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lost-in-translation-how-we-misread-our-dogs-emotions/">dog</a> and human brains both devote cortex to processing voices, including sensitivity to emotional tone.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-speed-of-voice-detection">Speed of voice detection</h2>



Past EEG work in people has reported early differences between voice and non-voice sounds on the order of a fifth of a second. 



One open access article found effects emerging around 0.164 seconds and peaking near 0.2 seconds on frontotemporal sensors.



These timings line up with the early “any voice” response reported in the recent study. The later same species effect fits with known windows for categorical decisions in auditory cognition.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pig-brains-and-voices">Pig brains and voices</h2>



Pigs are increasingly used in neuroscience because their brains share organizational features with ours. 



Recent physiology work has mapped clear auditory event-related responses in healthy piglets using scalp EEG, strengthening their value as a model species.&nbsp;



Finding the early voice flag in pigs suggests that this quick detection step is not limited to primates or carnivores. It likely reflects a basic property of mammalian hearing tuned by social life.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-roots-of-voice">Evolutionary roots of voice</h2>



The two-step pattern, first voice detection, then same species sorting, makes evolutionary sense. Fast detection buys time to orient toward a biologically relevant sound, then a later pass adds the social label needed to decide how to react.



If distantly related species share both steps, the underlying circuitry likely traces back to a common ancestor. That is consistent with decades of work showing conserved organization for voice and affect processing across mammals.



All recordings relied on cooperative, awake participation. Dogs and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/selective-breeding-has-dramatically-sped-up-the-evolution-of-pigs/">pigs</a> were measured in calm settings, often near their owners, and no training or sedation was required for them to rest while the sensors recorded.



The protocol emphasizes trust and low stress, which improves data quality and respects the welfare of companion animals. The approach also allows direct comparisons with human EEG.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sorting-same-species-voices">Sorting same-species voices</h2>



Same-species voices carry information about identity, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-identify-the-simple-emotion-that-gives-life-meaning-and-its-not-happiness/">emotion</a>, age, and intent. That richer meaning calls for more processing than a quick voice versus non-voice flag.



The later timing suggests a categorical decision process in which the brain checks acoustic features against learned templates for its own kind. 



In humans, that machinery feeds into language, but it operates in social mammals that do not use speech.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-voice-studies">Future of voice studies</h2>



Future studies can add more species and test a wider range of calls to see how acoustic structure shapes the early and late steps. Portable EEG could expand testing into natural settings where animals communicate most.



Combining EEG with imaging can also map the timing onto brain regions, tying the fast electrical signatures to specific circuits. That could clarify how the two steps interact during real world social listening.



Better models of voice processing can guide assistive tech for people with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drugs-may-be-available-to-prevent-hearing-loss/">hearing</a> or language challenges. They can also inform animal welfare by helping us detect stress or need from vocal cues in pets and livestock.



Cross species designs like this one keep us honest about what is uniquely human and what is widely shared. That distinction matters for both neuroscience and ethics.

New research has proven that, even on a cellular level, what doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger. 

According to a new study, cells that experience stress early on have healthier development and decreased rates of toxic buildup than unstressed cells. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.salk.edu/">Salk Institute,</a> the <a href="https://medicine.yale.edu/">Yale School of Medicine</a> and <a href="https://www.appstate.edu/">Appalachian State University</a> conducted the study and found cells exposed to stressors for a brief period fared better later on and produced more antioxidants than unstressed cells.

The results, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, could help with the development of new and innovative <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/halting-aging-rejuvenating-cells/">anti-aging treatments</a>. 

“The novelty of this study is that we've generated a model in which we can turn off antioxidant production in mitochondria but in a reversible way,” said Gerald Shadel, the senior author of the paper. “So we were able to induce this stress for specific time windows and see how cells responded.”

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and for the study, the researchers focused on toxic buildup produced by the mitochondria called superoxide. 

Mitochondria produce an enzyme called superoxide dismutase (SOD) to convert superoxide into something less toxic to the cell. 

The researchers wanted to find a way to turn off SOD enzyme production to see how short bouts of superoxide stress affected the cell later on. 

The team did this in genetically identical mice while still in utero and had a control group of mice with SOD enzyme production unaffected. The mice with the SOD switch turned off were exposed to brief periods of cellular stress from superoxide buildup. 

Once the mice were born, the researchers analyzed liver samples taken from the group that had SOD production turned off and the mice whose cells were allowed to function normally. 

In the mice who had dealt with superoxide buildup, their liver cells were more resilient and there were higher levels of antioxidants, less superoxide buildup, and more healthy mitochondria. 

None of these things were found in the liver samples of the mice who hadn’t had SOD production turned off. 

The researchers also found similar results in cells that had been grown either with the SOD switch or without. Cells exposed to superoxide stress were healthier, according to the research. 

It will be exciting to see if these findings could help create pathways to trigger cell resilience against common aging diseases like Alzheimer's. 

The results show that short-term mitochondrial stress doesn’t weaken or damage the cell, but instead strengthens the cell and could help keep cells healthy for longer periods of time.

Moth study confirms Darwin’s theory of evolution. Scientists at the <a href="http://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a> have investigated the survival odds of pale and dark forms of the peppered moth, Biston betularia. The researchers demonstrated that the pale moths are safer from predators when there is less pollution, while darker moths have a better chance of survival when the air is more polluted. 

The research confirms <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/darwins-finches-first-originate/">Darwin's</a> theory of evolution. The prevalence of darker varieties of moths or other animals in polluted areas, also known as “industrial melanism,” provides critical evidence to support natural selection.

“Through a bird's eyes, the pale peppered moths more closely match lichen-covered bark, whereas darker individuals more closely match plain bark,” said first author Olivia Walton.

“Crucially, this translates into a strong survival advantage; the lighter moths are much less likely to be seen by wild birds when on lichen-covered backgrounds, in comparison to dark moths.”

During the Industrial Revolution across the UK, pollution killed the lichen on trees and the bark was darkened by soot. As a result, a new type of peppered moth emerged with darker wings.

Years later, when the soot cleared up and the lichen recovered, the pale moths made a major comeback. While this phenomenon has been well-documented, it was never investigated whether the camouflage protected the moths from birds and other predators.


“This is one of the most iconic examples of evolution, used in biology textbooks around the world, yet fiercely attacked by creationists seeking to discredit evolution,” said Professor Martin Stevens.

“Remarkably, no previous study has quantified the camouflage of peppered moths, or related this to survival against predators in controlled experiments.”Moth study confirms Darwin’s theory of evolution

“Using digital image analysis to simulate bird vision and field experiments in British woodland, we compared how easily birds can see pale and darker moths, and ultimately determine their predation risk.”

“Our findings confirm the conventional story put forward by early evolutionary biologists - that changes in the frequency of dark and pale peppered moths were driven by changes in pollution and camouflage.”


The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/commsbio/">Communications Biology</a>.

A <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-genome-data-egyptian-mummies/">mummy</a> housed in an Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy since 1901 was embalmed 1,500 years before traditional Egyptian embalming was thought practiced.

It was believed that the Turin mummy, which had not undergone any conversation treatments through the museum, had been naturally mummified in desert sand. 

However, researchers from the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/">University of York</a> and <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au/">Macquarie University</a> saw the unique opportunity the untouched Turin Mummy presented in learning about prehistoric mummies and conducted a chemical analysis on the subject. 

The researchers found that the Turin Mummy was between 20 and 30 years of age when he died. 

The results, published in the journal Journal of Archaeological Science, show that the mummy, which dates from 3,700 to 3,500 BC, was preserved with resins, botanicals, and plant oil which soaked into its funerary wraps and preserved the body. 

It’s a similar process used in ancient Egyptian funeral practices however, the mummy was embalmed 2,500 years before embalming had reached its peak. 

“The examination of the Turin body makes a momentous contribution to our limited knowledge of the prehistoric period and the expansion of early mummification practices as well as providing vital, new information on this particular mummy,” said Jana Jones, an Egyptologist and expert on Ancient Egyptian burial practices from Macquarie University. 

The Turin mummy is not the first to provide evidence that embalming was happening earlier than previously thought, but the new study confirms these earlier findings and shows that not only was embalming used earlier but it was also common over a wider geographical area before Ancient Egypt reached its apex. 

“Having identified very similar embalming recipes in our previous research on prehistoric burials, this latest study provides both the first evidence for the wider geographical use of these balms and the first ever unequivocal scientific evidence for the use of embalming on an intact, prehistoric Egyptian mummy,” said Stephen Buckley, an archaeological chemist and mummification expert. 

The Turin mummy reveals burial traditions typical of Ancient Egyptian society were practiced much earlier and across a greater area than previously realized and helps provide insight into how embalming evolved through the years. 

“The results change significantly our understanding of the development of mummification and the use of embalming agents and demonstrate the power of interdisciplinary science in understanding the past,” said Tom Higham, an expert on radiocarbon dating.

Ancient mummy reveals early Egyptian embalming practices

Robotic floats designed to dive and float along with currents in the turbulent Southern Ocean surrounding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kelp-antarctica-traveled/">Antarctica</a> have provided an abundance of data to researchers. 

It turns out that the Southern Ocean is releasing much more carbon than previous studies estimated and that the area is no longer a reliable carbon sink.

The Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) project is a six-year program funded by the<a href="https://www.nsf.gov/"> National Science Foundation (NSF</a>). The goal of SOCCOM is to better understand the Southern Ocean’s role in climate and how carbon dioxide is being transferred by the surrounding currents and released into the atmosphere. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/">University of Washington </a>and <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/">Princeton University</a> analyzed data collected by the robotic floats and their findings were published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. 

“These results came as a really big surprise, because previous studies found that the Southern Ocean was absorbing a lot of carbon dioxide,” said Alison Gray, the lead author of the study. “If that's not true, as these data suggest, then it means we need to rethink the Southern Ocean's role in the carbon cycle and in the climate.”

Antarctica’s role in the global climate is becoming more apparent and carbon stored deep in the surrounding ocean takes centuries to travel back to the surface as water flows to Alaska and back to Antarctica. 

Recent research found that this flow and release of carbon in the deep Pacific Ocean was responsible for a huge rise in atmospheric CO2 at the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-emissions-pacific-ocean-flows/">end of the last ice age.</a>

Now, thanks to the robotic floats which dive down and float back with the currents taking measurements of dissolved oxygen and pH levels in the water, researchers know how much carbon is currently being released by the water circulation patterns around the Antarctic.

This data is vital for understanding how the Southern Ocean impacts global climate change and will help improve climate models in the future. 

“Antarctic waters, until now, have been a data-poor region for these kinds of measurements," said Peter Milne, a program manager for Ocean and Atmospheric Science at the NSF’s Office of Polar Programs. “SOCCOM, using technologies that previously were unavailable to researchers, is already proving its worth by gathering information that otherwise would remain largely unobtainable.”

After analyzing data from the robotic floats, the researchers discovered that the open water next to Antarctica’s swaths of sea ice is releasing much more carbon than realized and this has stark implications for future climate change. 

“It's not surprising that the water in this region is outgassing, because the deep water is exceptionally rich in carbon,” said Gray. “But we underestimated the magnitude of the outgassing because we had so little data from the winter months. That means the Southern Ocean isn't absorbing as much carbon as we thought.”

Antarctic seas release an unexpected amount of CO2 during winter

A team of experts at the <a href="https://www.gatech.edu/">Georgia Institute of Technology</a> has found that most of the digging in fire ant colonies is done by only a few individuals - an action plan that allows the ants to get the job done smoothly without any traffic jams. 

When the scientists applied this work strategy to autonomous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-influence-children-education/">robots</a>, they found that the machines could complete tasks using the least amount of energy and with the least mechanical clogs.

Autonomous underground robots could be used in the future for jobs such as disaster recovery, mining, or for digging underground shelters.

Study co-author Daniel Goldman is a professor in the School of Physics at Georgia Tech.

“On highways, too few cars don't provide much flow, while too many cars create a jam,” said Professor Goldman. “There is an intermediate level where things are best, and that is called the fundamental diagram. From our modeling, we learned that the ants are working right at the peak of the diagram. The right mix of unequal work distributions and reversal behaviors has the benefit of keeping them moving at maximum efficiency without jamming.”


The team monitored the activities of 30 ants who were painted for identification purposes, and found that 70 percent of the work was done by just 30 percent of the ants. When the researchers removed the five hardest working ants, however, there was no decline in productivity.

“We noticed that if you have 150 ants in a container, only 10 or 15 of them will actually be digging in the tunnels at any given time,” said Professor Goldman. “We wanted to know why, and to understand how basic laws of physics might be at work. We found a functional, community benefit to this seeming inequality in the work environment. Without it, digging just doesn't get done.”

Fire ants are constantly rebuilding their nests, and the tunnels they design are barely wide enough for two individuals to pass. The ants avoid clogging up the tunnels by retreating from passageways that are already occupied by other workers.

The researchers programmed robots to mimic this behavior while they were working in a narrow, horizontal tunnel. The experts found that three robots could work effectively in the tunnels.


“When we put four robots into a confined environment and tried to get them to dig, they immediately jammed up,” said Professor Goldman. “While observing the ants, we were surprised to see that individuals would sometimes go to the tunnel and if they encountered even a small amount of clog, they'd just turn around and retreat. When we put those rules into combinations with the robots, that created a good strategy for digging rapidly with low amounts of energy use per robot.”

The robots proved that they are not nearly as capable as the ants, who are much more flexible and can squeeze past each other easily.

Beyond the potential robotics applications, the work highlights the complex social skills of ants.

“Ants that live in complex subterranean environments have to develop sophisticated social rules to avoid the bad things that can happen when you have a lot of individuals in a crowded environment,” said Professor Goldman. “We are also contributing to understanding the physics of task-oriented active matter, putting more experimental knowledge into phenomenon such as swarms.”

This study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

High quality genome sequence will revolutionize wheat crops. After 13 years of international collaboration, scientists have produced the highest quality genome sequence for wheat in existence. The <a href="http://www.wheatinitiative.org/activities/associated-programmes/international-wheat-genome-sequencing-consortium">International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium</a> (IWGSC) is a detailed description of the genome of bread wheat, which is the most widely cultivated crop in the world.

The study involved over 200 scientists from 73 institutions in 20 different countries. The work will ultimately lead to wheat varieties that have enhanced nutritional quality, are more resilient against <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-forests-methane/">climate change</a>, and produce higher yields.

Wheat plays a major role in global food security and accounts for almost 20 percent of the total calories and protein consumed worldwide, which is more than any other single food source. Wheat serves as a staple food for over a third of the global population, and is an important source of vitamins and minerals.High quality genome sequence will revolutionize wheat crops


The world population is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by the year 2050. In order to meet this level of demand, wheat productivity must increase by 1.6 percent every year. In addition, this must be achieved primarily on land that is already cultivated in order to preserve biodiversity and other resources.

The new genome sequence provides crop breeders with the necessary tools to address these challenges. Using the DNA sequence, they will be able to identify underlying complex traits to produce wheat varieties that are more resilient.


“The wheat genome sequence lets us look inside the wheat engine,” said Professor Rudi Appels of the <a href="https://www.unimelb.edu.au/">University of Melbourne</a>. “What we see is beautifully put-together to allow for variation and adaptation to different environments through selection, as well as sufficient stability to maintain basic structures for survival under various climatic conditions.”


Wheat is expected to improve over the next few decades as a result of the high-quality genome sequence.


“How do you thank a team of scientists who persevered and succeeded in sequencing the wheat genome and changed wheat breeding forever?” said Professor Stephen Baenziger of the <a href="https://www.unl.edu/">University of Nebraska-Lincoln</a>. Genetic engineering of both plants and animal species has been going on for decades, as scientists attempt to make our crops more viable and use genetic manipulation to create animal models that fit to their research needs. But how does the average American view genetic engineering? 

A new study by the <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/">Pew Research Center</a> has found that Americans’ views of possible uses of genetic engineering in animals vary based on the mechanism and intended purpose of the technology.

When participants were presented with five different scenarios of animal genetic engineering that are currently available, in development, or may possibly be used in the future, they gave a majority of support to only those that have a clear potential for pre-empting or decreasing human health issues. 

For example, about 70 percent of those surveyed believed that genetically engineering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dengue-fever-modified-mosquitoes/">mosquitoes</a> to prevent their reproduction – and thus limit the spread of mosquito-borne diseases – would be an appropriate use of technology. Furthermore, 57 percent of participants considered it appropriate to genetically engineer animals to grow organs or tissues to be used for human transplant. 

The uses of genetic engineering that the majority of Americans found to be inappropriate included the creation of more nutritious meat for human consumption (57 percent say inappropriate) and restoring an extinct animal species from a closely related species (68 percent say inappropriate). Surprisingly, 77 percent of Americans found genetically engineering aquarium fish to glow was not an appropriate use of technology – despite the fact that this is already commercially available. 

Some of the concerns for those objecting to the use of genetic engineering in animals were that there was a possibility of unknown risks for the animals, humans, or the ecosystem. Additionally, some viewed these technologies as humans interfering with the natural world, or raised general concerns about unknown risks. 

The study also showed that individuals with high science knowledge tended to be more accepting of genetic engineering animals than those with lesser knowledge. Interestingly, participants who had higher religious commitment were less likely to consider many of the technologies appropriate for use on animals. But regardless of where the average American currently stands on these issues, it’s up to the scientific community to properly research any use of genetic engineering to the fullest degree, ensuring that – if it is eventually cleared for use – the results of the technology will not cause undue risk for the animals, us humans, or the environment.

Researchers from <a href="https://www.kaust.edu.sa/">King Abdullah’s University of Science and Technology</a> found that some corals and sea anemones regulate their gene expression to help adapt to extreme environmental changes. 

Through epigenetics, the process of changing a gene’s expression rather than an organism's DNA sequence, corals could be trained to accelerate their adaption to warming waters and rising sea levels. 

The acclimated corals could then potentially <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/adult-corals-give-their-offspring-skills-necessary-to-survive-climate-change/">pass these skills on to their offspring</a>. 

“In a nutshell, we could train toughened corals in nurseries to improve their thermal resilience, helping them to better cope with rising sea temperatures before out planting them in the reefs,” said Manuel Aranda, the lead author of the study. 

Coral reefs play a vital role in the ocean’s ecosystem, but the world’s corals are dying off at record rates and more has to be done to help give the corals a fighting chance against climate change. 

Epigenetics could be the key because it could help speed up an otherwise long and slow natural process where corals and anemones learn to adapt to changes. 

“Genetic adaptation is a slow process because it requires beneficial mutations to spread through the population, which takes quite some time in organisms like corals with long generation times,” said Aranda. “Our findings are important because epigenetic mechanisms present a potentially fast way to increase the survivability of corals in light of the current speed at which climate change progresses.” 

The results of the new study were published in the journal Science Advances. 

For the study, the researchers sequenced the genomes of sea anemones and focused on DNA methylation which is a chemical tag that affects gene expression without making any changes to the DNA sequence itself. 

Almost 40 percent of the anemone genes the researchers examined were methylated and this correlated with how the anemone could regulate its genes’ expressions. 

Symbiosis played a part in the anemone's methylation patterns and the anemones with symbiotic algae relationships had different methylation patterns which helped the anemone's genes manage its symbiosis. 

If the researchers could find a way to accelerate methylation changes that help with adapting to environmental stress like warming temperatures, it could create a new method for coral recovery. 

“The next step is to look at DNA methylation changes involved in acclimation to temperature stress and to check if these changes are passed onto the offspring,” said Aranda. “If this is the case, we could use the process of environmental hardening to "train" the parents and produce pre-acclimated larvae that could be used to seed reefs.” 

More studies are needed before epigenetic methods of recovery are applied to coral nurseries, and the researchers have several experiments planned to further test coral acclimation using gene expression.

In one of the largest studies of its kind, a team of researchers has measured the composition of 18 different planetary systems and compared them to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oldest-rocks-earth-meteorites/">Earth</a>. The scientists found that the makeup of our planet is “pretty normal” and contains many of the same materials as other space objects.

Dr. Siyi Xu of the <a href="https://www.gemini.edu/">Gemini Observatory</a> in Hawaii is one of the study’s authors.

“Most of the building blocks we have looked at in other planetary systems have a composition broadly similar to that of the Earth,” said Dr. Xu.

Since the discovery of other planets orbiting stars, which happened very recently in 1992, scientists have been investigating how these stars and planets may be similar to our solar system.

“It is difficult to examine these remote bodies directly,” said Dr. Xu. “Because of the huge distances involved, their nearby star tends to drown out any electromagnetic signal, such as light or radio waves so we needed to look at other methods.”


The study was focused on how the composition of the planets influences signals from white dwarf stars.


“White dwarfs' atmospheres are composed of either hydrogen or helium, which give out a pretty clear and clean spectroscopic signal,” said Dr. Xu. “However, as the star cools, it begins to pull in material from the planets, asteroids, comets and so on which had been orbiting it, with some forming a dust disk, a little like the rings of Saturn.”

“As this material approaches the star, it changes how we see the star. This change is measurable because it influences the star's spectroscopic signal, and allows us to identify the type and even the quantity of material surrounding the white dwarf. These measurements can be extremely sensitive, allowing bodies as small as an asteroid to be detected.”


For their measurements, the team used the Keck telescope in Hawaii, which is the largest optical and infrared telescope in the world. The team also took measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope.

“In this study, we have focused on the sample of white dwarfs with dust disks,” said Dr. Xu. “We have been able to measure calcium, magnesium, and silicon content in most of these stars, and a few more elements in some stars. We may also have found water in one of the systems, but we have not yet quantified it: it's likely that there will be a lot of water in some of these worlds.”

“For example, we've previously identified one star system, 170 light years away in the constellation Boötes, which was rich in carbon, nitrogen and water, giving a composition similar to that of Halley's Comet. In general though, their composition looks very similar to bulk Earth.”

“This would mean that the chemical elements, the building blocks of earth are common in other planetary systems. From what we can see, in terms of the presence and proportion of these elements, we're normal, pretty normal. And that means that we can probably expect to find Earth-like planets elsewhere in our Galaxy.”

Dr Xu explained that the research is still ongoing, and that the revolutionary work of the Gaia satellite, which has already characterized 1. 7 billion stars, is expected to help scientists to understand the white dwarfs much better.

The study was presented by Dr. Xu at the <a href="https://www.geochemsoc.org/programs/goldschmidtconference">Goldschmidt Conference</a> in Boston.

Robots can easily influence children help boost education. The fear of robots taking over the world is a trope that has been widely played up by Hollywood and novelists for decades. Movies and science fiction books present us with a world where artificial intelligence has surpassed mankind, and now threatens our very existence. In most cases, we can be entertained and intellectually stimulated by these ideas, but for most adults, they seem wholly unrealistic.

However, it’s not the adults who may be most at risk were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/automated-restaurant-robot-burgers/">robots</a> to gain power. A new study from the <a href="https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/">University of Plymouth</a> compared how adults and children responded to an identical task when in the presence of both their peers and humanoid robots. The results showed that children between the ages of seven and nine were significantly influenced by the presence of robots.

The study used the Asch paradigm to test how children and adults are influenced in their responses when they are in front of their peers and robots. This task has individuals look at a screen showing four lines, and answer which two lines match in length. When alone, participants rarely make a mistake. But when performing the task with others, they tend to follow along with what others are saying.

In the study, when children were alone in the room while doing the task, they scored 87 percent correct. But when robots joined in on the task and gave wrong answers, the children’s scores dropped to 75 percent - with 74 percent of the wrong answers matching the robot’s answers. On the other hand, the adults were largely able to resist being influenced by the robot’s answers.

“People often follow the opinions of others and we’ve known for a long time that it is hard to resist taking over views and opinions of people around us. We know this as conformity. But as robots will soon be found in the home and the workplace, we were wondering if people would conform to robots,” explains Tony Belpaeme, a professor in robotics at the University of Plymouth and <a href="https://www.ugent.be/en">Ghent University</a>. “What our results show is that adults do not conform to what the robots are saying. But when we did the experiment with children, they did. It shows children can perhaps have more of an affinity with robots than adults, which does pose the question: what if robots were to suggest, for example, what products to buy or what to think?”

The study’s authors posit that their research may be able to provide insight into how robots can be used positively within society. Although they do admit that the results raise some concerns regarding the ability of robots to also have a negative influence on young children.

Researchers at Plymouth have previously explored the positive impact robots can have in health and education settings. They’ve shown that social robots can help diabetic children accept the nature of their condition, and are currently designing a robot to support preschool children learning a second language.

“A future in which autonomous social robots are used as aids for education professionals or child therapists is not distant. In these applications, the robot is in a position in which the information provided can significantly affect the individuals they interact with,” the researchers say in Science Robotics. “A discussion is required about whether protective measures, such as a regulatory framework, should be in place that minimize the risk to children during social child-robot interaction and what form they might take so as not to adversely affect the promising development of the field.”

This summer, people across the globe have been <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heatwaves-severe-frequent/">feeling the heat</a>. In North America, summer kicked off with an unusually hot May after which followed long, dry, hot spells making for dangerous wildfire conditions. 

Wildfires even made their way as far as the Arctic circle and a worldwide heat wave drove record temperatures in the UK and parts of Europe. 

Unfortunately, 2018’s hot summer will most likely be the new norm in the coming years, as a new study found that the next five years could get even warmer than climate models had projected. 

Researchers from the <a href="http://www.cnrs.fr/index.html">French National Center for Scientific Research</a> (CNRS), the <a href="https://www.southampton.ac.uk/">University of Southampton</a> and <a href="https://www.knmi.nl/over-het-knmi/about">the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute</a> created a new system for predicting climate scenarios that veer from traditional simulation methods. 

The results were published in the journal Nature and show that globally, temperatures will be abnormally hot for the rest of 2018 through 2022. 

During the early 21st century, the Earth experienced a kind of lapse in global warming from greenhouse gas emissions. 

This lapse is called the global warming hiatus in the scientific community, but the new study shows that the hiatus is not a predictable event to base future climate conditions on and that temperatures will climb higher and higher in the next few years. 

Florian Sévellec, a CNRS researcher, helped develop a new climate modeling system that used statistical methods of 20th and 21st century climate simulations and then predicted future conditions based on those searches. 

The new method can also calculate simulations in just a few hundredths of a second on a laptop while other modeling methods can take up to a week to get results. 

The researchers found their method was comparable in accuracy and reliability to other methods but the system shows that future temperatures could be abnormally higher than previous estimates based on only carbon emissions from human activities.

The new system predicts that in the next few years, the frequency of cold events will greatly decrease and tropical storm activity will increase. 

The new system shows global averages will be hotter in the coming years but Sevellec plans to fine-tune the statistical method to make regional predictions and estimate future precipitation levels.

New research from <a href="https://www.trentu.ca/">Trent University</a> could revolutionize the way we capture and store <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-capture-profitable-business/">carbon emissions</a> leaked into the atmosphere which could slow down climate change. 

According to the researchers, the solution lies in speeding up the formation of magnesite, a mineral that can store carbon but takes thousands of years to form in nature. 

During the recent <a href="https://goldschmidt.info/2018/">Goldschmidt Conference</a> in Boston, Trent researchers presented their findings and proposed possible uses for newly formed magnesite. 

The researchers' methods occur at room temperature which makes it an energy efficient process and economically viable. 

This would be important for mass production at the industrial level, which the researchers say would have to happen for any real impactful carbon capture to occur. 

Fast-forming magnesite could also store CO2 for a long time and prevent any further release into the atmosphere unlike natural carbon sinks like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recent-drought-completely-shut-down-amazon-basins-carbon-sink/">forests</a> and oceans. 

The researchers realized that one ton of naturally-occurring magnesite can remove about a half a ton of CO2 from the atmosphere but the mineral takes a long time to form.

“Our work shows two things. Firstly, we have explained how and how fast magnesite forms naturally,” said Ian Power, the project leader of the study. “This is a process which takes hundreds to thousands of years in nature at Earth's surface. The second thing we have done is to demonstrate a pathway which speeds this process up dramatically.”

In order to remedy the slow rate of formation, the researchers used polystyrene microspheres which worked as a catalyst for the mineral. After 72 days, the researchers had fully formed magnesite ready for carbon capture. 

What’s especially exciting is that the polystyrene microspheres can be reused again. 

"Using microspheres means that we were able to speed up magnesite formation by orders of magnitude,” said Power. “This process takes place at room temperature, meaning that magnesite production is extremely energy efficient.” 

The researchers say that getting magnesite formation to the industrial level required to help combat climate change is a ways off, but that the results show that from a scientific perspective, it’s not an impossibility. 

“It is really exciting that this group has worked out the mechanism of natural magnesite crystallization at low temperatures, as has been previously observed - but not explained - in weathering of ultramafic rocks,” said Peter Kelemen, a professor at Columbia University who was not involved in the study. “The potential for accelerating the process is also important, potentially offering a benign and relatively inexpensive route to carbon storage, and perhaps even direct CO2 removal from air.”

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
